Halo Infinite's Forgotten Mode

- Theatre mode was a ground-breaking addition to the Halo series when it released with Halo 3 in 2007. But since then it's been neglected by 343 Industries, with Infinite having the most broken version of the mode to date. I firmly believe theatre was responsible for the Halo community's best days, and now with it being so poorly implemented, Halo is starting to lose not only it's broader appeal but also sections of the massive community it was known for. So, how do we fix it?
Big thanks to RileyTW on Twitter for the render of Master Chief with the video camera! He's very talented with a quick turnaround and high quality renders! Thanks again, Riley!

It’s such a shame how much 343 has neglected theater mode.
My fingers are crossed that one day we'll see theatre get some more love. And on another note, my day has been made. Thanks for stopping by!
More than just theatre mode. We haven't had firefight since 2010
@@burgertanker7970 floodlights only firefight related thing except
Halo 5 Warzone firefight 💀
It's such a shame how much 343 has neglected... Halo
Among other things and to say the least.
Theatre was the reason I replayed campaigns 800+ times in the past. My little kid brain would treat it as the Halo movie we never got...the heart break I felt when Halo 4 came out was rough.
MCC had me excited to get back to it....but you can't record an entire campaign mission in one clip anymore...heartbreak reset
I used to do that as well! I spent so much time jumping off Scarabs just as they exploded behind me and then going into theatre to watch it from a different angle.
@@LaperLarden yes!! And the classic walking away from the explosion without looking cuz that was still new and cool back then haha. Miss those days
Halo became a real sandbox, not just gameplay, it was even more than a modern social network: back in 2008 you had your avatar, a series of pics/screenshots, clips and videos, favourites and forge maps.
We could express ourselves while having fun with a damn good game. I repeat, A GAME. Not a platform to keep players invested so more people buy expensive cosmetics.
I don't wanna brag and just say we had it better back then and we were just having fun. All I want to say is that Halo allowed the playerbase to keep coming back to it because it had something for everyone way before modern systems, drip-feeding content etc. happened at all.
So, why do we no longer have the ability to have this simple fun in a game? Then, small communities of hardcore enjoyers of each modes have their niche and can express themselves.
Exactly. Halo's community has always been very diverse, which is one of it's best qualities. Hardcore comp players, casual players, people who only play campaign, people who love building maps in Forge, or creating Machinima using theatre or staging and taking screenshots, etc. So far Infinite really only caters to about half of those separate, smaller communities. And the community of people that use theatre predominantly, are having it the toughest, I'd say.
I was watching a bunch of old vids from sofallenfilms. God I miss machinima, it would be so great for them to have a comeback I feel like there's so many people out there that can make some awesome stuff. hopefully one day again.
I don't miss the company (mistreatment of it's employees), I miss the artform's popularity
@@smac2394 oh yea I didn't mean the company I agree the artform
There's a lot of potential there for free marketing that comes from Machinima. It's not just a creative outlet, but also a good way for Halo to get exposure.
Playable sangheili need to come back
Good stuff as always mate, I tried suggesting the dolly cam ages ago aswell!
Great minds think alike!
@@LaperLarden And don’t forget about pan-cam!
I miss being able to see my amazing armour in third person. Campaign theatre has gotta come back somehow.
7:16 The broken lighting in Halo Infinite's theater mode actually made me start thinking of parallels to the issues that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has with MKTV, which is basically that game's own replay and highlight reel mode. As a long-time fan of both Halo and Mario Kart, it's interesting to see some similarities between very different and completely unrelated franchises.
When compared to the original version on Wii U, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe basically flopped in this territory. It comes with the same limitations that the previous version had but at the same time offered less than the previous version did. For starters, there was a very obvious and infamous bug in replays where instead of randomly cycling between a few different voice lines for a certain action (i.e., get a boost), it would play the exact same one every single time. This was only fixed upon the release of Wave 2 of the new DLC tracks, which means it took *over 5 years to fix* such a glaringly obvious bug. This was never a bug on the Wii U, and was exclusive to the replays on Deluxe.
Lighting is also completely broken in MKTV reels on Deluxe (when it was also simply never an issue on Wii U), but only part of the time. Basically, if you view a highlight reel from the menu that appears directly after a race or battle, then the lighting works as intended. However, if you try to view the highlight reel by going to the MKTV option on the main menu, then the lighting is literally just completely absent, and it looks atrocious. And unlike the audio bug, this one is still a part of the game, so replays are still completely broken in the lighting department. I'd be happy to share a screenshot of what that looks like if you're allowed to share links on this channel's comments section.
Additionally, on Deluxe you completely lost the ability to share clips in-game with your friends and others. This was possible on Wii U (prior to Miiverse shutting down), and it was a cool thing to be able to see what was popular globally, what was new, and what your friends and those who you followed wanted to share to the world-all of this in-game. MKTV had its own limitations on sharing, but alongside Miiverse, it created its own ecosystem that's simply gone on Switch. Sure, you can clip any arbitrary 30 seconds now on Switch in the same way that Xbox can with its Game DVR feature, and you can also upload clips directly to Twitter and Facebook (which is definitely a plus), but they completely gutted that in-game ecosystem that MKTV and Miiverse created. Sure, it was not even close to as big as Halo 3's and Reach's ecosystems, but it was something that, just like with Infinite at the moment, is completely missing from the game when its predecessor had those features. Just like with Infinite, you have to leave the platform itself just to effectively share and interact with people outside the community, and it's unfortunate.
I hope Infinite can get its act together sooner than later. I had some fun with the Yappening event, but it's hard to stay invested with the game if I can barely do much of anything with people with the game's current state. Hopefully Forge is the start of that, but that alone won't be enough if everything in Infinite feels so segregated instead of connected like in 3 and Reach.
I fell off of Halo post ODST. So when I played Reach and 4 it was awhile after launch. I remember the Halo 3 file browser being extremely robust. I didnt know that even that feature suffered a huge downgrade over time
Reach had a very good file browser, though I can't remember 4's
Reach's fileshare was pretty solid. Everything after 4 was a bit grim and somehow only got worse with each game after that.
This better not be another vid that slips under the radar and goes unnoticed. Really well made as usual, Laper.
Thank you!
It certainly fell under mine despite the fact that the negligence towards the machinima community has been my biggest grievance with 343i since they took over.
Its because of Halo machinima that I even found and fell in love with the series, and seeing it be forsaken time and time again cuts deep
Use to have so many screenshots in my fileshare on H3. People were savage back then. Probably part of the reason why 343 are too afraid to have one in a Halo game now. With no one to moderate the stuff people post, it might get messy.
I never considered that. But you're right. Given how things are in this day and age, it'd be much harder to monitor that amount of content.
Black Ops 2 theatre was the bomb. So many good clips used to come from CoDTV. Shame they got rid of it cos of those theatre mode menus.
While it is true Halo Infinite's Theatre is broken as hell, I do think it was nice to have first person view of other players unlike previous games where you could only have third person view. What are your thoughts on this?
It's a nice addition, but compared to the rest of theatre's shortcomings in Infinite, it doesn't really make up for it. Though any new feature I'll gladly take in a game as barebones as this!
I wish 343 would add this to MCC. It clearly works in Halo 3 but it's never been an option for players. If you play H3 co-op campaign with a friend and watch the theatre replay on your friend's third-person camera, any time you die and reset to checkpoint or hit a 'vignette' cutscene or terminal, it will switch to your friend's first-person view.
@@StephenZelenak Holy shit I didn't knew that. Or maybe because I never got to play co-op because it's so laggy :P
Master Chief: War is still the Pinacle of human invocation and I cannot be convinced otherwise. Best Machinima ever.
Hard agree.
I mainly used theatre to improve my skills by looking at what my mistakes was and how to avoid that mistake in the future. I also made some dope screenshots with some help from my brother.
Fuck I miss Halo 3 so godamn much
19:00 I would add the community feature known as split-screen back, if I had to choose a feature. I miss enjoying halo with my family..
Once forge comes out me and my friend are gonna be making the sets for our machinima hopefully theater gets fixed by then
You made me really nostalgic with the RvB sounds, but for what Roosterteeth was a decade ago.
Amd I'm glad to heae you're taking steps to avoid burnout. :)
I love the first 13 or so seasons of RvB. I tried keeping up with the show after that, but, it just didn't click with me.
And thanks for watching!
4:04 as a huge RvB fan, this was such a missed opportunity
7:16
funnily enough i actually prefer this lighting over the actual ingame one lol
just a little bit closer to odst
I like how it's much easier to see the reflection of the map in the water without all the extra lights. With Forge I'm hoping to mess around with Streets and make it look closer to something from ODST. Maybe add some rain environmental effects too, if the game supports that.
Great video as always !
I remember being blown away when Halo 3's theatre mode was a thing. Then being so let down when Halo 4 came along.
Shame we couldn't get campaign theatre mode for 343's games.
The editing the script and the thumbnail was perfect your bids are amazing I subbed when I saw your h3 retrospective keep the consistent great content and you’ll blown up
Welcome aboard!
every multiplayer shooter should have some kind of theater feature
rooster teeth was in community forge flight 2 giving feedback on machinima to 343
Theater has always been my favorite feature since Halo 3...but it hasn’t functioned properly since Reach
It's a shame that it's been treated so poorly. It was one of those things that made Halo unique amongst the competition.
I loved watching the games I played on theater because I could see my Spartan or elite ((if not playing halo 4, 5 and Infinite)) in the 3RD person view which I wish it was possible ((I know about the mod for it on PC but I'm a console scrub so...)) but I know it would be exploited and all that crap but I've always loved seeing the animations and seeing it all in a different perspective
BRING BACK FILE SHARE!
Seems like they're doing just that sometime soon!
343 already feature cool clips from Infinite Multiplayer on their Instagram and Twitter. Why can’t they do that in Infinite as well?
also I assume youve seen the leak of the new community tab with popular maps / modes/ prefabs
Yep! It looks promising. Although I did start designing my own version well before I saw the leaks.
Miss campaign theatre a lot.
I hate how all AIs talk at the same time in some theater clips...
this is something that i didn't really pay attention to much because I really only play campaign most of my life lol. i really think this will help connect 343 with its player base
I'm glad I drew your attention to it!
fixing halo infinite will be a series longer than one piece
Yeah, just a little bit longer than one episode 😂
Sadge theatre moment
hey laper larden awesome forgotten mode video my request history of female UNSC marine from halo 2 to halo infinite
Ha. 343I basically spot themselves in the foot by neglecting theater mode. I mean that thing on Halo Infinite is broken as all hell.
Top vid as always LL
100% agree of course, theatre mode needs upgrades and 343 need to realise what they’ve missed here.
Didn’t Bungie/ms charge people for larger file share? Pretty sure I paid for that. Could be a monthly subscription thing in there for them if they could sort all this functionality out no? Go on 343 we know you love… money
Thank you! Was that a thing they did? I know for a fact I'd pay extra to get a bigger file share for the MCC. Mine is almost full from all the custom maps and modes I've downloaded!
@@LaperLarden Just double checked the web and halo alpha had this
On Halo 3, a default File Share can hold up to six custom content items; players who subscribe to Bungie Pro (at the cost of 750 Microsoft points per year) will have their File Shares expanded to hold twenty-four items. For a limited time, Bungie Pro was free for four months with the purchase of the Legendary map pack.
I’m sure 343 would be up for charging us for anything but just hadn’t thought about this as an option. Loads of micro transactions in it if you think about it. How about 10£/$/€ to lower your gun aye? It’s one way to get them to sort it out - make it clear you’d pay for it.
We need playable sangheili
That'd be a big net positive for the game.
@@LaperLarden its been ten years since we last had it. Its about time.
Theater and Custom Games need to get the same treatment Forge has. Forge has become something incredible, while Theater and Custom Games have declined (which severely impedes Forge since it limits the types of games that maps can be designed for). It's bizarre how ultra-competent the Forge team seems to be in comparison to the rest of 343.
I feel in the minority on this but I think k Co-op would have been that much cooler if the 2nd 3rd and 4th Spartans were MP Spartans
But halo is all about competitive gameplay
.
Sounds are awful in theatre. Sometimes you switch players even if you don't want to. Coming back to sounds, your AI voice changes randomly and overall... The sound is wacky
In conclusion:
Theatre is almost unusable. Combined with all the reason you already mentioned. The worst things are not beeingle able to make clips, slow the video down and not to save clips for later on when you just want to play.
Files get corrupted when youve played too many maps so the first file gets overwritten by your latest.
Just to mention it:
Can't be leave im first listening to your video while building an IKEA shelv
Hopefully I'm good IKEA shelf-making listening material!
I record all my multiplayer games now, just tried to look at my friends perspective but they still only save the last 12 games.
