    SBMM is one of the biggest reasons I stopped playing pvp game's once I found out they force a 50 50 win rate or pair you with people based on cosmetics it made the whole thing not fun and feel not worth it like a total waste of time because the odds have been picked for me

      Sbmm is why they are killing social features. Because social features prevent them from manipulating our matches so much. They even give you easier matches for buying cosmetics. It’s so screwed up and something has to be done about it.

      I actually had a similar experience going back to old Halo’s crosshairs, but mine was the opposite. I thought the old crosshairs kept me from aiming properly, and started to annoy me a little. We're hoping to fill the void that 343 has left by making their games unnecessarily competitive. If anyone is interested, I make devlogs on my channel, and you can join the discord through those, and even become a tester!

    I think for comparing Halo with Lethal Company, theres something else I think is funny to think about.
    Space horror.
    Halo wasn't exactly marketed as a horror series, but there is PLENTY of horror present in the first three games (mostly due to the Flood) and Forward Unto Dawn turned into a horror movie halfway through. The later Halo games after 3 don't really hit that same feel of terror anymore. Lethal Company provides plenty of that sort of space and cosmic horror (the monsters you meet range from local wildlife that seem disturbing but understandable to straight up paranormal magic like the Ghost Girl and the Masked, and added onto this is the strange mystery of the universe present that raises plenty of terrifying questions) , which is neatly shipped along with a hilariously goofy filter and absurdities going on that makes it such a unique experience altogether.

I'm tired of waiting for Bungie and 343 Industries and EA and Bethesda and all these big publishers and studios that either once upon a time made absolute bangers or got shifted to be in charge of game franchises that defined eras of gaming, all no longer doing the job of making a functional, fun, complete game and instead churning out slop geared towards the mythical "broader audience" in pursuit of every last dime in existence. The sweaty ranked-esque gameplay is also a reason I HATE playing Overwatch. I used to be GM in OW1, so my ranked skill rating was high, understandable. But the game has MMR as well, match making rating. And this is universal in ALL playlists, most notably quick play. I took a long ass break, and barely play anymore, I do not like how the game feels a lot less team oriented with the 5v5 format and deathmatch like gameplay of the new game modes.
    This left me extremely rusty at the game, I dont know the meta, my aim is off, I dont know the new map layouts, how new heroes play, etc. I want to play with some friends in quickplay, NOT ranked because I know, i am nowhere as good as I used to be. But my MMR is still really high, so even in quick play, ill be put in games with a bunch of current T500 players. The game also does this thing where it will put 1 GM MMR players on both teams in a QP match full of diamond players, besides the rampant smurfing issue, this just leads to unfair/unbalanced games as one of the GM players can be specialized in a non carry support role and playing heroes that dont carry, ex mercy, or trying new heroes and thus their mmr doesnt match their skill on the hero theyre trying out. This leads to many losses, leaving people discouraged from trying to learn new heroes, and other times you will meet that sweat t500 player sweating in QP with a pocket.
    Not to mention the people playing with Xims on console.
    I remember playing halo 3 on the MCC back in 2015 ish, yes it was a mixed bag due to the game but it was a lot of fun to screw around on a warthog in BTB with my friends, and team kill a 13 year old so that your homie can get in the back of the mongoose to try the hail mary CTF strats. We didnt even get mad being kicked from the game because the kid had a mic, it was very funny, but now it feels all so sanitized, where you have to take every match seriously or people will report you for throwing and you get banned, even in non-competitive game modes (I understand reporting trolls and throwers in ranked).
    AAA gaming has fallen a bit, not to say there are some gems still being pushed out, its hard to watch the decline of halo when I grew up playing it. Splitscreen halo 2 built friendships like no other, where half the game ppl were staring at eachothers pov and cheating accusations were rampant lmao, those were good times.

    I keep playing MCC, just H3 and Reach multiplayer, bc they were the first FPS i grew up playing, but not bc of only that, but most importantly is bc what already said: THE MULTIPLAYER.
    The social aspect of the games that connected us to play or compete with other people. Never had time to play but other games, and since i only dominate these, i'm sticking to them until i die. Since 360 era passed away i encountered my second youth at 2015 with Halo Online and Eldewrito port/mod for PC. THOSE GOLDEN DAYS WERE BACK. Eldewrito and Halo Online expanded the H3 sandbox baseline with new maps, new gametypes and most importantly new weapons and vehicles, that weren't so different from their baseline counterparts, but they were completely new. New aspects, new mechanics, a whole new world of possibilities opened i in front of my eyes.
    Social was a huge part of it, also. Chat embedded while in-game with Chromium Embedded Framework, voice lines thru discord, and all Halo Online channels and communities open and willing to receive new players.
    Glad Eldewrito guys force M$ to take part for bringing MCC to PC, but now i miss the fun that that mod bring us when there was no other enjoyable option (2015-2018, MCC broken, 360 playerbase decaying, no other Halo on PC than HCE, H2Vista).
    Wish some day 343 reconsider their position and keep pushing at least the rest of HO content still not ported to MCC.

      I COMPLETELY agree about the loss of the social aspect of new games. Halo Infinite’s ranked and even normal multiplayer is a turn off sometimes because of how sweaty it is. And Customs feels like such a breath of fresh air, but I still miss being able to use voice chat.

    sbmm is one of the big reasons (alongside nonsense like battlepasses) i have given up on many of my favorite franchises because of how impersonal and boring the cycle of win win lose lose lose win win win lose lose

  • @armstronggaming8566
    @armstronggaming8566 5 місяців тому

    I think the biggest reason for lethal company's success and for the lack of sbmm, it's the fact that you jump in to jave fun, not to win (as winning is literally impossible). I'd argue most other games (both past and modern) are like this too. Unless the game is marketed as something silly or as a goofy sandbox, people just dont play it to have fun any more. A game is only a game if you treat it as a game. Take the first month or so of infection in infinite where the sbmm was toned down. Nobody was grinding that for kills. Nobody was going around lobbies finding the sweattiest meta spot to grind score. People just treated it as something to have fun with, and now people are ysing it ro min max their career rank (because we all know ruining the fun and going in with a full stack in a private VC is worth an extra 3000 points)
    As to why sbmm is everywhere, if I meet mint blitz in one match, thats cool. If I play against him several times and get absolutely smashed every time, I dont want to get matched up with him again and again because I que at the same time (because infinite does use more than just sbmm which already seems fairly weak in my experience (could also be my gameplay quality having more variance that the arnour quality in H5), stuff like geolocking, which I think is honestly the real problem for infinite in low population areas. Also, it's just a more consistent experience. As good as variation is, I absolutely hate it when I get games with zero resistance or get crushed with zero chance to win. Its personally more entertaining to me to have the close game with the occasional (but well earnt) domination on either side. Im not saying this about a game specifically, but its an [awful] example of why sbmm is still sticking around.
    Additionally, I believe voice chat was on by default in the flights for infinite but it was common for people to just mute their game chat and use an external vouce chat, which gives a fairly clear message.

    • @LaperLarden
      @LaperLarden  5 місяців тому

      Very good points. I think the whole "streamer mentality" has really rubbed off on players nowadays. Everyone seems to want to be the best, or will min-max and exploit the game (like Infinite's infection) to get ahead.
      There's definitely a broader discussion to have about the mindsets of people playing games and not just the matchmaking systems that may be influencing our games and the skill distribution we're experiencing.
      I've run into some pretty gnarly SBMM on Infinite. More recently on the H3 Reloaded playlist when that first came out, I could almost predict when I was going to lose or win a match just by how I performed in my first few games. Typically around match 3-4, the game would bump me up and put me with HCS rejects who haven't stood up for 13 hours, and it would stay that way for another 3 games before it would finally give me a pity match with some bot players and the cycle would repeat. I'd occasionally try searching for other playlists like Infection, with an estimated wait time of 2 minutes (expanded search on), and couldn't find any because my MMR was so high from the H3R matches that I had played earlier. I don't mind a bit of SBMM when it's done right, and it's relatively loose. But to have a hidden rating hanging over your head and affecting your ability to find matches? That's a bit scummy.

    • @armstronggaming8566
      @armstronggaming8566 5 місяців тому

      @@LaperLarden I agree that sbmm is definitely in need of tuning in some cases, but I think the main problem with the search times is how Infinite seems to lock people in certain regions to their region and America. I can't get btb games past 5pm in Australia without an international fireteam because the America servers are dead at that time, nobody in Australia is playing big team modes at that time and I never get to match with other regions. At the same time if you play fiesta after 5pm you get much faster matchmaking because now other Australian players are playing.
      Maybe that isn't what it is, but it really does _feel_ like infinite prioritises searching in your region and America than searching for the first possible low latency game available
      Editing in post: I also agree that the H3 playlist does feel more competitive, but I'm not sure if that's the SBMM or the maps just being better for people who have just min-maxed the H3 map layout and haven't left their couch since H3 came out

    game devs/publishers have lost sight of pretty much everything but that $ sign, missing the fact that if they kept their sight on making a fun game first and foremost, that $ sign will be perpetual. lethal company is going to outlive halo infinite - not just because 343 botched their game (though they definitely did), but because lethal company was focused on being a fun game - and through that, making its players die of laughter comes so naturally. it doesn't feel artificial, unlike what a AAA developer might do had it made lethal company (a AAA studio never would have, they'd perceive the game as too risky to create).

    Looking back on Destiny made me realize just how much it suffered from a pitiful lacking of social features. Dropping just about every single good thing Halo 3 and Reach did.
    All that potential for Fun, gone. All that carrying force it could have whenever its in some "terrible" content drought, gone. Thus, began its downward spiral into the worst kinds of player retention.
    I can only imagine how much it could have focused on FUN if it wasn't so caught up on pumping out empty calories and more casino machines just to keep you in the game.

    Modern games try to be addictive, not fun. Old games were simply focused on fun.

    The cause is monopolization, big industry and institutions taking over gaming.
    Let me explain.
    First of all, the developers are now people who go to college and then get a corporate job as a game dev/designer. Old school game devs were not classically trained. They were just people who had a passion for gaming. Contrast that with people who go to college, nothing wrong with college. But the problem with institutions is that they allow people who are mediocre to dominate a field or industry. Like a 20 something can have no experience writing at all, go to college for writing, graduate and then work in the industry. Meanwhile someone who’s been writing their own works and fan fiction since the age of 15, they have little to no chance of getting into the industry without that college degree. These institutions end up gate keeping skill and talent out of the industry.
    This is why Ubisoft devs were so offended at Elden Ring. They don’t know gaming from a passion point of view. They only know it from an academic and institutional point of view.
    Or like those NaughtyDog devs who are upset about Palworld and claim that the devs must have cheated somehow. They can’t even fathom creations that don’t come from them. They believe that they’ve gotten this industry down to a science when in reality they don’t. They think they are the apex of video game development despite actually and literally being the bottom of it.
    Like is it possible to go to college to become a content creator? How much education would I need to become Larper Larden? You can teach me the technical aspects of content creation, but can you teach me the creativity and drive as well? No that’s something someone must discover on their own. And a lot of these modern devs never discover that and have no interest in doing so due to ego. As far as they’re concerned, they are the Hollywood elite of gaming. They are “the industry”. That’s why modern studios are so hostile and talked so much trash to their customers.
    You don’t see indie game devs doing this as much. Sometimes there’s flak, but with AAA games devs, its part of the current culture to HATE video game players and smaller devs because they aren’t “in the industry” and don’t “get it”. It’s literally like Hollywood.
    And then finally you have to recognize that a lot of these companies and brands are so big, they don’t have to try. They just release whatever and it makes a billion dollars. But that’s dying and changing like you pointed out. But the problem is that that these companies do not have talent. Many of them have driven away all of their talent. The older experienced devs all left to make their own thing or hopped to other studios. I think some of these larger studios and publishers are going to be in the red until they restructure their dev teams. The college educated Ubisoft devs who live in echo chambers and call games like Elden ring bad, they’re gonna have to go. Simple as. But it’s gonna be a while before that happens. In the meantime, games like palworld and lethal company are gonna to keep popping off.

    I have not touched this game because all the reviews I see are "I enjoyed the experience with my friends". The last game that tried to sell me on this social aspect is Deep Rock Galactica, and it is one of, if not the, most boring games I have ever played. DRG is my second Steam refund, and the first refund was because of DRM caused stuttering.
    I am beginning to question that this emphasis on social interaction in games is an energy shield to protect a game from criticism of boring repeating gameplay loop and environment, and a nostalgia trap to get glowing reviews despite the game holding little merit on its own.
