    Defying the myth that dreadlocks cannot be washed!

      Do you use any type of natural conditioner like coconut oil? I would think with just washing dreads with shampoo would dry the dreads out and eventually cause drying of the scalp and dreads causing them to break off in weak damaged areas

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому +6

      I deep clean my hair every couple of months with apple cider vinegar, rosemary oil, tea tree oil, lavender oil. I have never done anything other than that and *fingers crossed* nearly 7 years in, I've never had a lock break.

    • @niikkiragland3637
      @niikkiragland3637 10 років тому +1

      Ok, well the Rosemary, tea tree and lavender oil is like a conditioner. So you've answered my questions. Apple cider vinegar is an great alternative cleanser. It doesn't strip the natural oils rather just kind of dissolves the dirt then wash out :) so, being a dread head, what type of lifestyle do you live? Do you have a video like that? Kind of like opening up about your dread journey and if it was associated with just wanting them or the deeper reason?

      I do not live a particular alternate or interesting lifestyle, I'm just an undergrad student - I eat, sleep, study and make videos ^^ My dreadlock tag videos go into a little bit of why I originally wanted to start them, but the reasons differ now for why I continue to have them.
      If I was to start over now I would also go freeform.

    Just started watching your dread videos and I must say....thank you! Thank for simple common sense videos explaining methods. I've even had hair stylists tell me things I thought didn't make much common sense. Also, not many people have good clean looking dreads to model after but yours seem great. Once again, thank you. I'm just starting mine so this has been very helpful.

  • @LazyDreads
    @LazyDreads  11 років тому +3

    Well there are some upsides to them being short! Less washing and drying time and there's less hair to shrink up so you get fewer loops and lumps! They'll settle down after you've slept on them for a while, failing that they should soften after you start to wash them. It doesn't take much / any work to get them like mine, just lots of patience / forgetting they exist =] Have fun with your journey!

    You have to wait for it to lock up! It's possible to use a crochet hook to pull it back in, but with young dreads you'll find it just falls back out again when you wash next. It's completely normal and to be expected that young dreadlocks are going to be messy and frizzy. They take months to mature and then once they've matured they will lock up the loose hairs by themselves. If you try and force them to be neater it will take longer for them to mature.

    I waited a month or so b4 washing w African black soup liquid.
    But my locks are bleached and the extra oil from my head seemed to help w/o any scalp irration.
    I recommend not getting them wet every time ya shower too.
    That's what dries out your scalp bc they do take along time to fully dry.
    Keep up the good work Lazy!

  • @LazyDreads
    @LazyDreads  11 років тому

    You might not want to be quite so harsh, mine are like rope and I like to give them a good scrubbing. Friction is also good for the dreads and any loose hairs that get knocked out will quickly start to lock up again on their own. I find that the tougher I treat them, the tougher they get.

    Thank you so much for your informative videos. I got dreads from the salon a week ago. She did the knot at the scalp, then crochet and blunt them at the bottom. I have exactly 36 dreads. My hair was down to my thighs, and straight, and not its about waste length. I'm excited for my dread journey. I will wash my hair every saturday, and also use the sea salt solution. My babe dreads are super tight right now, and I'm scared to wash them, but I'll be super careful with them. Your dreads are awesome and thank you again!

    Having previously been a hairstylist, I can tell you that even without dreadlocks it is very rarely necessary to wash the entire length of your hair. Unless you have extraordinarily oily hair/scalp then washing the scalp is enough. Some shampoo or soap will naturally make it's way down the length of the hair shaft as you clean the scalp and that is usually sufficient. To actively scrub the hair shaft only serves to damage it.

  • @LazyDreads

    I find after I follow your process, a second washing is needed to concentrate on sectioning off hair in 4 parts. Then I scrub down the entire length of my locks. This is especially necessary to remove cigarette aromas. Also, although I use shampoo regularly (2-3x week), incorporating a monthly saltwater washing works wonders.

    Well I don't leave the house much either! Although that's not through illness, it's just... well. Anyhow, big beanies are awesome and especially when you have young kinda mad dreads that you need to control / cover up. The friction from the hat also helps make loose hairs get a little frizzy and therefore become more likely to knot up!

  • @LazyDreads
    @LazyDreads  11 років тому

    5/7 days should be more than enough time for them to settle and be ready to be washed. You're going to want to be more gentle with them than I am with mine and you might want to squeeze each dread individually when rinsing and drying rather than squeeze many like I do. Young dreads should be fine with gentle towel and air drying. The blow dryer is more for older dreads that are harder to get dry. They'll be messy after their first wash but this is normal.

    Sorry if I missed you discuss this already - but how soon is it safe to wash your hair for the first time after getting baby dreads? I know you need to be extra careful with them while they're new, is there anything in particular you should do? - or avoid? Should they be blow-dried? Squeezed with a towel after I assume is ok? So for so many questions.

  • @LazyDreads
    @LazyDreads  11 років тому

    They can be washed as often as you like. But usually once every 2-3 days because they take longer to wash and dry than normal hair and therefore it's not normal to wash them every day. Of course you can still shower every day while keeping your hair dry.

    You can get dr bronner's organic soap. Get the liquid dr bronner's and mix it 10 parts water to 1 part soap. The soap mix will still be strong enough to use as a shampoo but not so strong that it'll be difficult to rinse it out. Also it'll last you a while.

  • @LazyDreads

    The scalp is where the oils are and where it actually needs cleaning. The scalp gets the shampoo and the scrubbing. The dreads get rubbed against the scalp and the soapy water rinses down over the locks. Then the entire rest of the time I'm squeezing the soapy water through and out of the locks. I'm not entirely sure what you expected to see? If you go and start putting soap all over the locks themselves you'll spend an hour just getting it all out again and they don't need it.

      Chr Bac how often do you wash your scalp?

    • @Klabautzerbebbi
      @Klabautzerbebbi 4 роки тому +1

      @@ginadg5066 Depending on how often I do sport. If I am active then I try to wait until 4-6 days and if I don't do much then around 8-10 days. But I had to get used to it and now my scalp doesn't feel weird or greasy until around 10 days sometimes. Your body just gets used to being more natural. :)

    • @ginadg5066
      @ginadg5066 4 роки тому +1

      Chr Bac yeah that’s makes sense! I’m scared I’m going to pull a bunch of hair out when I wash my scalp for the first time lol. My dreads are between 2-9 days old right now. My loctician suggested washing the scalp as needed but only washing the dreads every once in a while. Depending on if you were out in the dirt or dust, or are more active etc. she told me I wouldn’t need to worry about washing the dreads themselves for a while, maybe months. Again, depending on activity and need.

    Sea salt is fine and good for dreadlocks but just using sea salt and water won't actually clean them. It won't break down any dirt or oils in the dreadlocks and using salt regularly can cause scalp irritation. If you have an aversion to regular soaps then I would recommend washing with just baking soda and water.
    I have a video all about the signs and symptoms of residue.

  • @LazyDreads
    @LazyDreads  11 років тому

    The water is going to pull some hairs loose. Some of those hairs might just be kinda stuck in rather than locked / knotted in and some hairs might only be loosely knotted and get pulled loose. Anyway it's normal and will happen less and less as the dreads get older and more locked up.

    Well, now after practically taking a shower with you:), the only question I have is if you use anything to moisturize your dreads or if you just stick with the deep cleanse(which i watched and is helping tons, thanks so much!) and shampooing?

  • @LazyDreads
    @LazyDreads  11 років тому

    Well I did have to create definitive proof that dreadlocks can be washed and can be washed in the shower, I believe I have succeeded! =]
    I don't use anything extra other than shampooing and bicarb soaking. Some people will in fact spray their dreads with salt water and lemon juice to dry them out rather than condition them as the dry hairs seem to knot up more. But I personally just stick to washing and soaking and it works out fine =]

    I just did my dreads today, and I am very new to this hairstyle, so I have a shampoo question. Can you use just regular shampoo like Head and Shoulders or does it have to be a specific kind of shampoo? I love my dreads, I love how they turned out, even though I am not completely done putting them together. I love the style of dreads and wanted them ever since I was a little boy. I hope you can answer my question because I really love dreadlocks. And btw sweet dreads

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому +1

      paulakaFATBOY There are various options with regards to shampoo choices, however most "regular" store bought options will not work very well with dreadlocks over the long term. Dreadlocks require shampoos that rinse effectively without leaving behind any residue - as well as shampoos that are not overly conditioning - as conditions will loosen and undo knots, and therefore most regular shampoos are not going to be appropriate.

      AKARASTA69 I use which ever body soap is in the shower at the time... and I buy whatever smells good... I don't make body soap purchases with my hair in mind, I just don't let my dreadlocks touch the body soap.

    For young Dreads would it be good to be softer whilst twisting them and draining them of the water or should you just be as rough as possible? Cheers man!

      Huw Jones When you handle the dreadlock you're going to be able to feel how much they can comfortably take.

    When I wash my dreads they come undone a little, are they supposed to do that? (1.5 months)

  • @LazyDreads
    @LazyDreads  11 років тому

    I'd say it's pretty much impossible to decide exactly how many dreads you want before you start. You would have to divide your head up into 33 equal sections. It's better to decide how large you want your sections to be and then see how many you end up making.

    The dreadlocks aren't solid all the way to the root, there's always about an inch of just soft normal hair so when you're washing and scrubbing you are able to scrub everywhere, you're not just scrubbing between the roots.
    I've never heard anyone worry about Lyme disease with dreadlocks. Bugs aren't anymore attracted to dreadlocks than they are normal hair.. because it's just hair. They're also pretty solid so it's not like things can get inside them.. but not that they'd want to becauce

    Hello!!! I'm pretty interested in getting emo/scene hair. I was researching or months but I could never find anything to make me stand out since my hair is super curly and frizzy and then I started getting into dreads! I would talk to my mom about it and she would say "If you try to wash them, they'll get moldy and they stink too." I am going to show this to her now and see if I can get some 1 1/2 inch dreads before school starts!!! I have a playlist of your videos I'm going to show my mom.

      I have a mohawk and I would like to dread it. Would I have to use the same washing methods? Would it take a shorter time to create dreads with a mohawk and let them mature?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому +1

      It would take a shorter time to start them, because there would be fewer of them to start, but it would take the same amount of time for them to mature.

    When should I take the rubber bands off my new dreads? I just started today and I know you don't recommend leaving them in for too long.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому

      Aimee McKim Personally, I would take them out as soon as you're done starting all the dreads.

    • @aimeemckim5863
      @aimeemckim5863 9 років тому

      Lazy Dreads is there a specific reason why you suggest that?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому

      Aimee McKim Elastic bands hold the hair together - which might make them look more formed and keep them looking more like dreadlocks, but they don't allow the surrounding hair to form knots effectively - extreme exaggerated scenario: you could cover an entire length of hair in elastic bands, you'd make a dreadlock-like pony tail, but the hair inside wouldn't be able to move to form knots.
      So I don't believe the bands to be of any great positive benefit... however there are negatives in that: they can slow the movement directly around them, they can rub against surrounding dreadlocks and break hairs, loose hairs can knot over the top of them and require them to be cut out and cheaper elastics have been known to degrade and fall apart into the hair.

    • @aimeemckim5863
      @aimeemckim5863 9 років тому

      Lazy Dreads so do you think just having elastics on the bottom would be a problem?

    How long does it take you to grow dreadlocks as long as they are in your back combing vid from hair around 2"?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому

      The Nerdy Badger The rate of hair growth differs from person to person - I'm told around 6" a year is about 'average', but it varies. When you start dreadlocks they will also shrink up some as they're maturing.

  • @LazyDreads
    @LazyDreads  11 років тому +1

    Dreadlocks are not an exact science, there's no exact time frame, everyone's hair is different, but ballpark tends to be about 1 year.

    I was thinking about getting dreadlocks and would it be easier washing them in a bath?

    • @LazyDreads

      Nicole Martineau You can... but I personally probably wouldn't - rinsing them with the bath water means you'll... well... be rinsing them with bath water.

    Question. I just got dreadlocks im about a month in now. How long do i have to wait before i can actually wash my dreads?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому +1

      A month is more than long enough to wait... wash them whenever you want.
