    I put a dab of (veg) hair dye in my salt spray to keep my hair tinted purple. The dye is VERY conditioning, so this is a sneaky way to maintain my colour and my knots :)

    Salutations from Finland! First comment on your videos, I'm a recent subscriber. Really liking all the content, you're a funny cat!
    Have to try this spray sometime in the future. I used to have shoulder length(lower chest if pulled straight) extremely thick & curly hair. Looked like a 17th century court barrister's wig, not joking. Had long open hair for a decade, in January I seriously started considering dreads.
    After I found your channel and all the useful info bits & bobs on it, I got my dreads done in the twist & rip method about a month back. Before that I had been washing with a residue free ph-neutral shampoo bar (without conditioner ofc) for about a month as well. Got differently sized strands made into dreads on purpose, at home. Thinner on the top of my head & temples, thicker on the forehead & back, I like sleeping on my side. I want as natural a look(without the neglect method obv.) as I can get with zero chemicals. Maybe I'll post you a pic once they condense and shrink up a bit, already starting to knot up nicely thanks to my hairtype. Also I wanted to do some weird look with the loose paintbrush tips so I braided the thin bits at the end of each dread to prevent them from unfurling without a rubber band. Have removed the braids now, after their roots locked up.
    Thank you for an informative & entertaining channel!

    Amazing videos! Super helpful for me. I went into the salon and got a dread perm (I know not your prefered choice). Your videoes have been amazing for helping me maintain my dreads and avoid A LOT of things I was thinking of doing that would have been detrimental to my dreads.
    At least my salon told me to avoid wax like the plague and to stick to only water soluble solutions :)
    Keep up the awesome videos and I look forward to being entertained and educated by your future posts!

    When my dreads were young, I would spray sea salt on the lengths every night before bed. It knotted like crazy while I was asleep! I never really washed it out on a regular basis, and they were fine. Maybe a little dry at times, but fine overall. But I also have very thick, resilient hair.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      It's really going to depend on the hair and environment along with how strong the mix and how much is sprayed. Some people do run the risk of drying their hair out too much and so my advice is generally slow and steady to make it safe for all people.

    This was really informative, thank you!... I've been using sea salt spray on my neglect method dreads, but I've been putting it on AFTER I washed my hair, and then leaving it in until my next hair wash (which is usually 3 days, to a week later, depending on my mood and how oily my hair is).

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      Putting it in right after a wash will mean that the salt can soak a little into the dread rather than just sit on the outside so you should see more noticeable results. It does however also obviously increase the risks so remember to keep an eye on it :)

    So I have got 3 months old dreadlocks which have a lot of loose hair going around. I wash them every 3-5 days. I do some maintenance on them but there is always hair coming out of the dreadlocks after a few weeks. I think this is normal. If I were to spray some of this sea salt water mix, should that be before or after washing them? for how long should I leave the mix on the dreadlocks? and should I try and fix the dreadlocks (as in putting the lose hair back in with the crochet) before spraying the mix all over or after washing it out?
    Thanks :)

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому +2

      Sea salt will slightly dry out the hair and so make it more likely to tangle and knot. When you apply it and how long you leave it on for is up to you. It's not highly beneficial to leave it on for extended periods of time as it'll do it's job in only a short period of time... whereas if you leave it on for days you may find that the salt gets onto your scalp and causes irritation. I would recommend using it a short while before you wash your hair so that if you find it is not all that useful, at least it is going to get washed out soon. Once you are comfortable with how it works and the effect it has on your hair, you will be able to decide for yourself when is best to use it.

    Hey man. Love the videos. Just wondering if you'd recommend any type of root maintenance for young dreads? I've had partial dreads for about a year but I finally went full dreadheadabout 3 weeks ago and there are a few dreads made from super soft baby hair at the nape of my neck; the roots are undreaded for about an inch or two and they seem to be locking super slowly compared to the rest. Any suggestions??

    I want to start getting dread but I don't know where to. I'm wondering what kind of maintenance is necessary and how to keep away dandruff and to keep knots. Especially what kind of shampoo to use of at all.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому

      Andre Lewis The only maintenance that is truly necessary is washing, drying and separating.
      To keep dandruff away you need to find a shampoo that works well to balance your head/scalp etc - the same as when you're dealing with dandruff in normal hair.
      Shampoo choice can be a little complex as different people's heads have different needs - you will need to 'audition' different shampoos until you find the one that works for you and the dreadlocks. ua-cam.com/video/g35MhTn6pPo/v-deo.html

    Hi LD! Question: is it okay to throw in some vanilla extract into the salt spray mixture?
    My dreads are about 1 month old and in the rebellious stages (sticking out, fuzzing and un-fuzzing, etc). I want to use the salt spray mix but I want to throw a bit of sweetness in there. Thanks!

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      MissesD123 I know of putting vanilla essential oil into the mix... which I suppose has vanilla extract in it... but I don't know about putting straight up vanilla extract (the cooking ingredient) in there.

    • @MissesD123

    I have decided I am going to start dreadlocks. Are the "dread kits" really a neccesity (aside from the shampoo and comb) or can I use stuff I already own. also I have 6 inches of hair, and I want to keep some length when the start to shrink. what lenght should I let my hair grow to?

    • @AmyJoSteel16
      @AmyJoSteel16 9 років тому

      Making dreads is easy, and if you can do that you can make extensions :) depending on what method you use anyway.

    • @owenhergel7933
      @owenhergel7933 9 років тому

      ***** alright thanks! Also, how much length do you loose when your dreads start shrinking?

    • @AmyJoSteel16
      @AmyJoSteel16 9 років тому

      +Owen Hergel That really depends on your hair type and the way your hair has been sectioned, but generally you lose 10-20% of length after Backcombing (if that's the route you're going down) and then the amount of shrinkage varies from about 10-30%. It occurs over time as your hair is growing, so very often it will seem that your dreads are not growing longer at all. The truth is they are growing longer but shrinking at the same time so it looks like they are just getting wider instead of longer.
      I'm the same about length so I put some extensions in mine! If you'd rather let your hair grow more you could wear synth / wool dreads to satisfy your dready cravings in the meantime :) x

    Hey, I have short hair, like 3.5in, and I can't wait to start mine, I'm looking for a wild, Bob Marley type look,
    A: would natural be good since my hair is short and not Mitch knotting needs to be done
    B: would this sea salt mixture help me since the short hair?
    And I realize its gonna be years before my dreads get to my desired look

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому

      Adapt Parkour You can start 'neglecting' your hair and allowing it to naturally knot at any length, but not much will happen until it grows out. Whether it's the method you should use can only be answered by you - the natural method is unique in both it's progression and it's results - for some it's exactly what they're looking for, for others not so much. If it is the method you're looking for, then there really is no substitute... if it's not the sort of thing you're looking for, but use it anyway due to convenience... well, you may regret it.
      Sea salt mix is used to dry out hair, making it more coarse and more likely to form new, tighter knots. It can be helpful in all methods, but it's not a magical effect, just slight - and should still only be used in moderation, as too dry is not wanted and too much salt can be irritating.

      Julia Flea Shouldn't need to worry about drying them because they really shouldn't get that wet... it of course is going to depend on how much you apply, but the dreadlocks will get damper walking in the rain. I don't think mold should be a worry in this situation.

    I’m restarting my locs again and hate the ugly stage lol but it’s part of the locking process also love straight hair dreads they are amazing. Another note hate when people of color hate on literally anyone that’s not black when they have dreads that’s just me lol

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому

      liwesley dockins Well this is not so much a method as such, just a way to keep the hair slightly drier, should it require it. It'll therefore still work in hair that's shorter.

      Agreed! It's not like I feel bad for that happening right now, I'm fine the way I look shaved anyway, the problem is I'd miss the chance to do dreads :/ my hair are already past my shoulders so I could give them a try but still :/

      Die by the Sword-God Dude, you've posted the same comment on like 10 different videos.... when you post the same thing over and over ALL of them go into the spam folder. Your comments are also not straight comments - this one was posted in a reply to a 2 month old comment.
      One of your comments linked to a shampoo on amazon.. I've never used that shampoo, it was all in German? I can't comment on a shampoo I've not used, so I can't tell you whether it's appropriate... but that vast majority of store bought shampoos are not, they're not designed to be. You need a residue free shampoo that doesn't condition the hair, this is particularly important for freeform.
      The spray is applied as and when required. If the hair is already dry, then no, not every day.
      The shampoo I bought when I first started creating my dreadlocks was garbage and not something I'd recommend or repeat.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому

      cory barbour A lot of it is all down to balance - you've got to balance the hair/head so that it's not too oily, but also not too dry. The main influence is usually the soap/shampoo used, different products will have different results. If the hair is clean, and cleaned regularly, but the hair is still too oily - or if it goes the other way and is too dry, then I would first look to try out different soaps/shampoos/

    I've had my dreads for about a month now. Should I start the sea salt solution or is it to early? Another thing does it lock up instantly?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      Antonia Burch You can try the sea salt if you want... but no, it does not lock instantly... it takes months for the hairs to move around and knot up to become fully locked - nothing that you apply to the hair is going to cause the hairs to instantly move into a locked position.

      verhoren crighter Because blunted tips take longer to drain water and are therefore more prone to mold and lint problems - I also do not use or promote the use of hooks or needles... nor like how they look.

      Lazy Dreads thats cool ... i get what ur saying .... i do admit my hair does take awhile on the tips .. but i guess i just perfer the way it looks better .. but its all up the the person .. also ... i agree .. when hair is first used with needles it looks a lil wonky .. but my hair looks basicly like urs ... but i also havnt used needles for over a year since im lazy and havent ordered new ones since i broke em .. but i respect ur comment .. i guess its the same way that i hate the way neglected dreads look or parted in the middle dreads .. cheers bro .. love the vids .

    Weird question:
    Could I use, like bring home sea water and use that as a spray instead of making "sea salt spray". I mean I don't live that close to the ocean to just go swimming in every time I want.

  • @freshley1438
    @freshley1438 10 років тому

    I have quite new dreads. And i live 2 miles from the ocean. Is it already good for the dreads? I'd be released if i was able to swim again!

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      Ashley Schäfing It's up to you, ocean salt water is great for locking up dreads, but there's always a chance that they can get loosened up when swimming with them while they're young. It's a choice you have to make yourself - when you're happy with them and confident they'll hold up, get in the sea!

    • @LazyDreads

      You have to wait until the loose hairs get to the point where they can knot with each other and then they'll either knot into a neighbour dread or form their own.

    I have a little question: il you swim in the sea, is it also necessary to wash out the salt the same day just as with the spray? thank you :)

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому +1

      You don't HAVE to wash out the spray the same day - it depends entirely on the person's hair and how much they use etc. However I would highly recommend washing the dreadlocks after swimming in the sea - you'll have a lot of salt not only on the outside, but soaked into the dread and you will likely become very irritating on the scalp and skin if you refrain from rinsing them off for extended periods of time.

      I actually think the general feeling that they get if you don't wash them after swimming would lead you to wash them before the ill effect of the salt would. Swimming in the ocean is fun and good for the dreadlocks.... but when you get out, the hair definitely doesn't feel...uhm.. clean? at least in my experience they don't feel all that fresh or nice after a swim (they also smell like...ocean water) so I wash them right away.
