I have one of these and it has been great. I painted my garage door in very little time. The prep work took longer than the painting. I chose latex paint and added water to the paint in increments until I liked the test spray I did on a piece of cardboard. Months later, it still looks perfect. Best part - no brush marks!
Overall, you like you know what you are doing, however, if I can offer advice, always primer coat bare wood. Especially with kitchens and bathrooms where there is high heat and humidity. I use an oil primer, with 2 coats, sanding between each, and then 2 coats of paint. It will extend the length of your cabinets and protect from warping over time. Your cabinets are beautiful by the way, and thank you for the review.
Finally a paint sprayer review by someone who understand about paint and painting... UA-cam is full of first time user reviews about many stuff, which is OK, but I certainly need expert reviews like this, to get a better understanding. I was just about to bang my head against the wall, when the first time users were “amazed” by their results, which were awful in fact for me. Thank you.....
Man I lucked out. We had a local Sears Hardware store going out of business. I saw this gun on the shelf for $40 so I grabbed it. Haven't used it yet, but I'm all hyped up now
Got the same gun ,awesome ! I did a thick deck paint and no thinning !! ,it comes with 3 different size tips and I used red and no thinning ,worked great !gonna do bare wood fence, and about 65 yr old wood barn ,oil base prime first then barn red with dark burnt orange trim . you can adjust how heavy it comes out and using the proper size tip just about any paint . Two yr warranty ,just follow cleaning instructions and m using mostly deck paints and barn and fence with oil base primer and latex ext paint over . I will brush and roll primer ,otherwise you need harsh stuff to clean sprayer , but latex in the gun is fast and easy . Just ch the air filter at back of gun and periodically clean out with water and dry ,good product !
Thank you for suggesting this product. Had to replace some faux shutters on the front of a rental house and was dreading painting them with a brush. So for the price I was willing to try this sprayer. The last (only) spray painter I owned was about 20 years ago and it cost $200 and was a bear to clean, hence it didn't last long. This was incredible on painting, easy to figure out, and only took about 5 minutes to thoroughly clean. I think I am going to start doing a lot more painting.
I have one of these sprayers. I've been spraying BIN shellac primer with no problems on cabinet doors. I'm not exactly the neatest artist but this machine does seem to make it easy with very little overspray. No thinning needed. I'm here on youtube trying to learn how best to clean the sprayer. If it gets too dirty I start seeing speckles of dried paint getting laid down. Better learn how to fix this before top coating! Which by the way we are going to try Behr's pre-cat epoxy.
Graco makes some awesome Low Pressure tips for that big sprayer you have. Try the FFLP Fine finish low pressure tip. Little overspray. Shouldn't be much more than 40 bucks at your local Sherwin-Williams Paint store. I love. mine. Just thought id share.
I like to mix about 10-15% water based polyurethane into latex for a smooth flow, self leveling, and a superior toughness and durability. Been doing that with my airless Spraytech for almost 20 years, and it worked excellent thru my new HVLP.
I had this gun. I painted the bathroom, three doors, and hallway ceiling and they all looked perfect. I was very happy with it. I cleaned it up really, really good. By the time I got to my family room, there was no way I could get any even pattern any more. I had to return it.
The Handyman, thanks for the reply. I will definitely watch the other cabinet videos. I'm always up for learning other ways to do things/improve my process. I have 28 doors to paint in a 1 car garage so I'm hanging pvc pipes from the exposed joists, drilling cup hooks into the top/bottom of the doors (whichever side won't be visable) & then hanging them on wooden hangers to spray then transfer to my pvc racks to dry. I'm also using an alkyd paint and I spoke to a rep for them and they emailed me the HVLP spray recommendations for their product (no more than 8oz water per gallon or 2oz pet quart). I'm hoping that will suffice for the viscosity needed to use this sprayer. Anyways, thanks again for your reply. ..off to watch the other cabinet painting videos you made! :-)
Instead of water, try Floetrol. Like water, it improves the flow for spraying and brush-layoff. Unlike water, it doesn't compromise the binding and durability/lifespan. A $7.00 bottle does up to 4 gallons of paint.
+Mark Spotter I think I might try ppg breakthrough for my next cabinet paint job. The dry time on the paint I used was not practical at all. It did wet out very nice and made a smooth hard surface.
I'm bewildered that the paint rep told you to use water. I hope it was the HD or HomeRight rep, and not Behr's. Not to say you can _never_ get away with water dilution -- walls and ceilings in conditioned spaces being conceivable exceptions -- but I have learned to avoid it (esp. on exteriors or humid areas) if I didn't want early call-backs. I'd like to know how the PPG goes for you. It seems they've really kicked up their "game" lately, at least marketing-wise. Homebuilders here in N.Tex are specifying PPG more lately. I've heard only good things about their product.
unbelievable mate. i actually had the wagner in my amazon shopping basket and was browsing and found this. I am definitely buying this now as i upcycle furniture and have found you can buy additional valves for this. i plan on painting my house soon. Great review.
I bought an Earlex 5500 a while back, but from your results may have been able to achieve the same results for far less money. Seem to have to thin paint more than 10 per cent to spray good, using Valspar cabinet enamel. Really enjoy your great content.
I just bought one today at Rockler Woodworking. My thought was that because Rockler is high end top quality professional tools than logic tells me the sprayer must be good. So far I’m happy and have painted a desk and a wall. I paid $73.00 after taxes.
I've used a compressor, a standalone semi-pro HVLP and also bought one of these. From what I can tell this one, the Wagner and the one I bought from Aldi are all made by the same company. I run from spraying every time because I get a lot of airborne spray, usually a poor finish and too much time spent on masking and clean up. When I say airborne - the stuff is over 2 metres away all over everything. By the time I've figured out the consistency I can use a conventional roller/brush, clean up and be home watching youtube. I understand for large projects it's probably worth it. Or maybe I need to spend more time practicing.
PPG-BREAKTHROUGH Breakthrough is a incredibly durable latex paint. It's in a class of its own. Sherwin Williams has nothing to compare to it. It's rated for Fork lift traffic to emphasize the durabilty point. It's awesome on wood windows as it's formula keeps them from sticking. Its perfect for high traffic doors, cabinets, trim etcetera. It drys hard so its never tacky feeling. The dry time is its only ussue in my opinion. It drys extremely quickly, so brushing is a never, and rolling requires experience and speed. You must keep a constant wet edge. When spraying, say like a front door for example, I like to do it first thing in the morning before it gets hot out and the more humidity the better to help promote a slower dry time. Adding a latex extender like Flotrol also helps. Even spraying requires you move fast. Done correctly though, you won't find a better product currently in my opinion. This is just one of PPG'S great products. Certainly worth the added expense. One last note... I painted my Ford Ranger with it two years ago, and it still looks great.
Thank you. One of the only videos that helped. Diy painting my cabinets. Will use vinyl sealer or stix , and then SW kem aqua. Also going to try the smaller tips. 1.0 etc. Any problems with long term clean up? Do you still use it?
Hi. Thanks for this video. I meed to buy my first paint sprayer to repaint the lattice under my screened porch and deck. This looks like the right one for me. I now envision many other painting projects that this sprayer will make much quicker and with better results. I will place my Amazon order today.
I had wanted to get one of these, as the reviews and videos all rated them very highly. I am UK though and would need an voltage adpater (240v to 110v) but after careful consideration, if anything went wrong I wouldn't be able to return, or have a great cost to ship back I have ultimately decided against the purchase. I'm watching you spray @9:45 and I wondered if your father ever yelled at you for getting oil, paint, whatever on the basement floor or the workbench when you were growing up???? If the answer is no, you had a cool dad. You were truly blessed.
Just bought a HomeRight Super Finish Max Extra to paint some home built cabinets - thanks for the video, it tilted the scale in the right direction for a purchase and there were several favorable reviews on Amazon!
Great video man.. I bought one 3 weeks ago and painted a desk, kinda messed up because I didn't thin the paint at first. Then I thinned it out with thinner instead of water . That made matters worse. Finally I used water but I think I thinned it out way too much because the paint was dripping too much on the desk .. this video helped for the future.👍🏽
Ray Reimann I'm getting ready to paint a friend's Camp. I'm using Olympic solid latex stain. I'm wondering if this HVLP gun can do that. Thoughts or recommendations?
I myself spray kitchen cabinets all the time and use my Titan 440 airless, using a Titan HEA tip. 311 or 411, I can use them knowing that aero soling is not a problem, because you can turn your pump down to 800 psi, which in turn lowers your overspray and aero soling.
HI The Handyman! It's being a while I am watching your videos. I have learnt a lot of stuff on this channel, about doing things around the house ( I am an handyman too, but not as elaborate as yourself)! Congrats. I have a couple of questions regarding this sprayer: It might be a good choice for outdoor projects, like staining/painting fences, gates, doors, patio stuff? How about painting the indoor walls and doors? Thank you!
Great video. Do you know if is possible to use for refinish bathtub? Using a epoxy paint? I’ll try to paint the next cabinets with this one. Thanks for the video
How did the HVLP sprayer work out over time, since I think you went for something much beefier in a recent video. I looked at the comments on the Amazon link, a fair few were not as impressed as you were, so made me ask how it worked out for you.
I am about to use the Sherwin Williams Emerald urethane enamel with this gun and the paint specifically says on it do not thin for spraying, would you still thin it anyways? I trust you more than Sherwin Williams.
I just bought that Behr paint to pair up with my spray paint gun (with paint bucket on top + air compressor) On the paint label, it says do not thing it. Therefore, I am not sure if I can use it on the spray gun. Was the result ok after you thin it down with water? ? Would appreciate that you answer this. I might need to return it soon.
how is this gun when it comes to orange peel? i use spray can but downside to that is when i have to tilt the can to spray on something flat, the can tends to spit causing more work and i hate it. i just want to be able to spray without having to take the object off just so i could stand it upwards to spray without any dripping from the cans. and with minimal orange peel to deal with afterwords is always a plus.
While using the BEHR semi gloss were you able to get is to flatten out without any stipple? If so, can you let me know your process in achieving it? Thanks Handyman!
Just saw the video. It looks like it would do a great job. After 1 1/2 yrs, are you still satisfied with it? I have a redwood pool fence that we stained solid white stain by Olympic. We're getting ready to do it again this summer, and am looking for a sprayer, rather than brushing it like last time. Would you recommend this sprayer for the job? Thanks for your informative videos. I learn a lot from them. Keep up the great vids!
I have a similar gun and it's definitely a process to clean. Did you clean yours completely between 8 hour coats or do you have any tricks to preserve it until the next coat. Whats the longest you can go between coat until you must clean it?
I still use it. I am going to be using my large air compressor and a spray gun in my workshop in the future. I will keep this gun for doing on site painting.
I just purchased, based on your video. QUESTION I'm painting same doors as you, I already have 2 coats on by hand, with a bit of "orange peel" look. If I go over one more time with sprayer, would that smooth out?
Light sand with 150 grit and spray one more coat. Bunch of things to troubleshoot the orange peel... paint too thick, distance too close, might have to turn the dial on the sprayer down a bit, moving too slow while spraying, fan not in the right direction, correct tip for the application and sprayer not cleaned properly. Thats all I can think of now.
They work awesome for deck spindles. Except I bought the $400.00 Titan sprayer but it paid for itself on the first job. I still get $3-$4 a spindle but get it done 20x faster than rolling.
Yes I'm glad that they're getting away from oil and using waterborne products lot less hassle on cleanups you should try the Sherwin-Williams "Emerald" paint it's their top shelf paint it's a urethane does a beautiful job on cabinets and Doors and is also water-borne it's a little pricey but worth its weight in gold once you see the finished product , Graco has actually came out with a new spray tip for your airless sprayer and it is a fine finish tip you know how your housings usually Orange with black tips these are blue with green tips pretty much turns your airless sprayer into an HVLP the tips are 35 to $40 a piece and they really really cut down on the overspray I was quite surprised when I use these on kitchen cabinets earlier this year very little overspray out of an airless Graco 395
Interesting fact about HomeRight - they were acquired by Wagner late last year. I guess they were worth buying by a known name in the painting business, hopefully they will be around for a while. Link to the press release: www.wagnerspraytech.com/press-room/wagner-spraytech-acquires-homeright/
I have a Graco Trucoat II that I used for painting my mobile (metal) a few years ago, and the spray was amazing. No spatter, no orange peel or anything. The only complaint I had was that the volume of paint wasn't adjustable, so if you went with a narrower tip for more detailed work, it put out way too much paint. I couldn't paint that fast. I couldn't keep up with it. It sure painted my mobile fast. The only time consuming work was the prep and the cleanup. It would never do cabinets like you are doing, though.
Shouldn't you have put primer on first before painting with regular paint? Anytime someone hits the cabinets the dings will lose paint. Also, I learned to use a roller between coats to insure even painting.
I bought the $100 Wagner and used it on a few jobs. It did what I needed but your gun seems nicer and the other tips are a nice bonus. Just picked up the Graco x5 airless for a job I start Monday. Do you have any tips when working with airless sprayers?
I have been spraying airless the last few days. I have a Graco Magnum Prox7. I got it used on craigslist 6 or 7 years ago. I have painted a few houses with it. I'm currently pre painting wood soffit and fascia that I'm installing on an old duplex. The only mistake I ever made was with over spay getting on the roof of a house. If you get cat whiskers on your spray pattern turn the pressure up.
I have one of these and it has been great. I painted my garage door in very little time. The prep work took longer than the painting. I chose latex paint and added water to the paint in increments until I liked the test spray I did on a piece of cardboard. Months later, it still looks perfect. Best part - no brush marks!

Wouldn't the water based poly chge color slightly to more yellow?
@Maurice Ordonez Oil based turns yellow water base stays clear.
Shannon Young oooh great idea! Thank you!
what is the brand of the polyurethane you use?

Bob C PPG is a paint company.

Mutch spell, good know 🤣
I’ve used this same gun with kilz latex paint no thinning and it works great
I got the extra and the extra comes with some extra stuff.
The cheaper gun comes with the little viscosity cup gauge. The Extra for some reason does not. Strange but true.
PPG-BREAKTHROUGH
Breakthrough is a incredibly durable latex paint. It drys hard so its never tacky feeling. hmmmm im abouit to try it tomorow. good to hear.
If decide to use water, distilled is the best as it has no minerals or junk in it & will improve lifespan of parts of sprayer
Thx, I bought one a few months ago but haven't used it yet. Helpful video and channel .
I bought this same Homeright paint gun. It's completely awesome for small-medium projects!
Thank you. One of the only videos that helped. Diy painting my cabinets. Will use vinyl sealer or stix
, and then SW kem aqua. Also going to try the smaller tips. 1.0 etc. Any problems with long term clean up? Do you still use it?
Very informative video! Thank you for explaining the details that most tutorials leave out!
Pity I would of loved one!
I'm watching you spray @9:45 and I wondered if your father ever yelled at you for getting oil, paint, whatever on the basement floor or the workbench when you were growing up???? If the answer is no, you had a cool dad. You were truly blessed.
I just bought this gun and I was looking for a demo and you nails it!!!! Thank you!
Great sprayer! Glad I bought it
Just bought a HomeRight Super Finish Max Extra to paint some home built cabinets - thanks for the video, it tilted the scale in the right direction for a purchase and there were several favorable reviews on Amazon!
thanks brother I was wondering if this painter is still a good idea all the comments are really old
Great video man..
I have this exact same sprayer and yes you can spray exterior paint with the red tip, you can also run paint straight, no mixing water needed.
Ray Reimann I'm getting ready to paint a friend's Camp. I'm using Olympic solid latex stain. I'm wondering if this HVLP gun can do that. Thoughts or recommendations?
So, how did it go!? I'm supposed to be able to push paint+primer undiluted through this product and it sure doesn't seem that way?!?
Yeah man !! ...You must have super lungs with integrated filters !! Great example of profesional painting !!
I myself spray kitchen cabinets all the time and use my Titan 440 airless, using a Titan HEA tip. 311 or 411, I can use them knowing that aero soling is not a problem, because you can turn your pump down to 800 psi, which in turn lowers your overspray and aero soling.
This is great info since about to purchase my first sprayer kit. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼👍🏼
Fantastic video - wasn't too sure about using a spray painter but you convinced me I'd have no problems. Thank you
I bought an identical sprayer at Harbor Freight when I had a stockade fence to paint. Best $30 I ever spent.
Whats the brand pls ?
HI The Handyman! It's being a while I am watching your videos. I have learnt a lot of stuff on this channel, about doing things around the house ( I am an handyman too, but not as elaborate as yourself)! Congrats. I have a couple of questions regarding this sprayer: It might be a good choice for outdoor projects, like staining/painting fences, gates, doors, patio stuff? How about painting the indoor walls and doors? Thank you!
Can this be used on ceilings? Or will inverting it cause problems with the suction tube?
Dont worry, you wont die that quickly from overspray. I takes 3-5 years from experience. The ones that use a shirt last around 7.
Best tutorial of all that I viewed .
Thank you !!!
I am late to the video, but found it very useful for an upcoming painting project. Thanks
Would you suggest using Floetrol instead of water to avoid orange peel? I have never used a paint sprayer before.
Excellent information...thankyou Handyman
The graco truecoat 360’s will spray without watering it down.. but I do like the homeright sprayers for the price
Great video. Do you know if is possible to use for refinish bathtub? Using a epoxy paint? I’ll try to paint the next cabinets with this one. Thanks for the video
Tks for the video. What type of compressor do you use?
I went to amazon and the price have gone up with 70 Dollars since you did this video? I assume it was Homeright Finish Max?
Thank you so much for buying our sprayer! We would love to connect with you!
I didn't even know you had a youtube channel. I have lots of videos using your sprayer. My email is thehandymanhq@gmail.com
I bought this sprayer sight unseen, not knowing a thing about paint sprayers based on this UA-cam video alone :)
I have a Wagner paint ready station HVLP you do not have to thin down the paint whatsoever that Wagner will spray it not one problem at all with it
How did the HVLP sprayer work out over time, since I think you went for something much beefier in a recent video. I looked at the comments on the Amazon link, a fair few were not as impressed as you were, so made me ask how it worked out for you.
can you spray in upward position? we do have popcorn ceilings which would be nice to refresh ... thanks
Man thanks so much for all this information.. perfect for DIY projects, thanks. Keep it up man.
For an authentic pub feel, thin with beer.
Great video been looking for a sprayer under 300
Can you spray ceilings with this sprayer? I ask because of how the suction tube is angled in the paint dispenser/container. Thanks handy dandy 🇺🇸👍😊
Do you have a link to the little green plastic paint can top?
can it be used for lacquer polish
I am about to use the Sherwin Williams Emerald urethane enamel with this gun and the paint specifically says on it do not thin for spraying, would you still thin it anyways? I trust you more than Sherwin Williams.
What happened, what were your results?
Yes this is doing a very good job
Can use for emulsio. And premer
I used a Behr paint product and didn't have to thin out. Worked fine. Still works great! Love it!
how is this gun when it comes to orange peel? i use spray can but downside to that is when i have to tilt the can to spray on something flat, the can tends to spit causing more work and i hate it. i just want to be able to spray without having to take the object off just so i could stand it upwards to spray without any dripping from the cans. and with minimal orange peel to deal with afterwords is always a plus.
While using the BEHR semi gloss were you able to get is to flatten out without any stipple? If so, can you let me know your process in achieving it? Thanks Handyman!
Can you paint outdoor gutters effectively ?
How about the car when you going paint that with it ?
Did you use a compressor with this?
I was just looking at this exact sprayer. Do you think it would have any issues with an oil based poly or possibly even lacquer?
I spray lacquer all the time with it. I have never sprayed Poly.
Awesome! Thabn
is this for lacquer paint?
Just saw the video. It looks like it would do a great job. After 1 1/2 yrs, are you still satisfied with it? I have a redwood pool fence that we stained solid white stain by Olympic. We're getting ready to do it again this summer, and am looking for a sprayer, rather than brushing it like last time. Would you recommend this sprayer for the job? Thanks for your informative videos. I learn a lot from them. Keep up the great vids!
The Handyman i second this question
Do you find thinning that paint that much takes some of the sheen away? should you start with semi gloss to end up with a satin finish
So are you saying even the ones you can use without thinning needs to be thinned first?
So instructions say black for cabinets but see you went with yellow. Why was that ? Do you still use it ?
Can you use this with oil base stain?
I have a similar gun and it's definitely a process to clean. Did you clean yours completely between 8 hour coats or do you have any tricks to preserve it until the next coat. Whats the longest you can go between coat until you must clean it?
I cleaned it between coats only took a few minuets just sprayed water through it.
Ok wondering if chalk paint for furniture thinned 10-15% will work in this gun. This gun I believe is 400w . Maybe I need one like vanneck 700w
What is a good viscosity time for water based paint like Benjamin Moore Advanced when using that viscosity cup and this sprayer?
Just bought one of these sprayers in 2021.
Great video, man. Is the gun still working fine? How many times was it used?
I still use it. I am going to be using my large air compressor and a spray gun in my workshop in the future. I will keep this gun for doing on site painting.
@@TheHandyman1 Do you have a link to the compressor and gun you will be using by chance?
How much dilution can BEHR paint handle? I am very new at using sprayers.
Good informative video. Thanks!
I helped a lot to know how to use that paint spray. Home Right?!, Thank you!
Thanks
Isn't " ALKYD" oil paint, can u then it out with water??
Thanks again
+Frank Iannelli this is water based based alkyd.
Here is a link. The finish was great but the dry time was way to long www.behr.com/consumer/products/specialty-paint/behr-alkyd-semi-gloss-enamel
Why will be a throwaway sprayer? Can you clean it and reuse it?
They work awesome for deck spindles. Except I bought the $400.00 Titan sprayer but it paid for itself on the first job. I still get $3-$4 a spindle but get it done 20x faster than rolling.
Will it spray latex?
Thanks for the video! Super helpful.
Been using this sprayer for 2 years and you do not have to thin your paint.
Same here.
He thinned it to get the finish quality he wanted. Before thinning he was getting more orange peeling in the finish.
It depends on the paint rather than the sprayer.
Emerald paint does leave a really nice finish but it’s a hassle to use it doesn’t work like other semi gloss paints
my Life
Interesting fact about HomeRight - they were acquired by Wagner late last year. I guess they were worth buying by a known name in the painting business, hopefully they will be around for a while.

What brand sprayer is that?
I have a Graco Trucoat II that I used for painting my mobile (metal) a few years ago, and the spray was amazing. No spatter, no orange peel or anything. The only complaint I had was that the volume of paint wasn't adjustable, so if you went with a narrower tip for more detailed work, it put out way too much paint. I couldn't paint that fast. I couldn't keep up with it. It sure painted my mobile fast. The only time consuming work was the prep and the cleanup. It would never do cabinets like you are doing, though.
so was that just the paint you used ...? any primer?
The cup you used is viscosity cup
Do you think it'd work with Minwax Spar Urethane thinned?
Shouldn't you have put primer on first before painting with regular paint? Anytime someone hits the cabinets the dings will lose paint. Also, I learned to use a roller between coats to insure even painting.
do you think it would be good for medium jobs like a garage walls?
It could work. I haven't sprayed any latex paint that wasn't thinned down a little.
Hi Handyman, Do you think I can use this t stain my wood fence?
kelly girl Yes.
You can but it might take a while since it's only for small to medium projects.
