- In this video Long Bed to Short bed conversion of our 1986 Chevrolet C-10 square body C10 build with very little rust. We cut 14 inches out of the frame and weld er back together at Rusty Duck Garage. We bought this truck for $1,100.00. Ls Added new tires, lowered it 4 inches in the front and 6 inches in the rear. In the front we used two inch drop spindles and cut the springs. We may have lowered it more than 4 inches in the front. In the rear we used a rear axle flip kit. Eventually we install a c notch. Let us know if you think it's to low in the front. Next video we will install the fuel tanks and add the short bed box that we picked up. We should have our driveshaft back from the machine and ls ready to install. Our used bed is red. In future episodes we will paint the bed to match the truck. Thanks for watching Rusty Duck Garage. Now go do a burnout. Chevy C20.
Immaculate design. Precision plan. Perfect workmanship. Thanks.

I love the videos man, it was nice meeting you today Rusty, i was in the silver Charger in Lincoln City you stopped and talk to.
Thanks, nice meeting you and your 392 Charger sure sounded good when you left!
As a car guy and understanding your wealth of knowledge along with straight to the point video I definitely subscribed. I was sold when you broke down the use that welder. Watching you was beneficial so I want to thank you in advance for helping me out 😊 Continue to be a blessing 🙌😇
Thank you Torano. We will keep the videos coming.
Best how to I've ever seen on doing this
Thank you! Really appreciate the comment!
Thank you..now I know my truck has an easy option to a short bed using your measurements
Glad to help
Rusty Duck,
Another great video.
Keep ‘em coming.
Thanks David! We will keep them coming.
Nice job. Looks like you're taking your time and doing it right.
Thanks Mitch. I think it is going to turn out nice. We are keeping track of the budget and will post our total cost later. Not including our labor.
@@RustyDuckGarage labor? I thought that was love!

Building number 8 now 😀, it’s got to be done or as much as I can by March
Looking forward to the next video!
More to come! I’m going out of town next week for a few days. Not sure how much I will get done. Hopefully I get my driveshaft back from the machine shop.
Looks good. My plow truck has a bad frame in back and i want to shorten to put a stepside bed on that i have
Nice work on the frame modification, should last the life of the truck.
Thanks Tim! I agree.
Clean frame conversion for sure
Thank you! Your channel and work is awesome1
I’ve found that if you have the box available tack up the splice then put box on to ensure the cab to box gap is perfect and all the cross braces sit on the frame. Then take it back off and buzz it up. 👌
Nice job.
Thanks!
The thumbnail really had us over here like WTF looking at it on the TV 📺
Awesome!
Finnaly some one properly chopping a frame
Thank you!
Great video would this exact cut work for a 1985 c20 3/4 ton Chevy
I don't like shortbeds but bravo to you. Enjoyable video
Fair enough! It has been a lot of fun to do.
Good idea 💡
Thank you! Cheers!
👍 From Cadillac Michigan
Thank you.

Awesome, thank you!
We do a little bit of this type of work up here in the gorge sounds like your in Portland we’re doing a 1970 right now then a 260z wide body
Just went thru the Gorge yesterday.
great video mate
Thanks for the visit. I like your channel.
Awesome guys
Thank you!
Seeing a long bed truck being cut up to a short bed just pains me… just making my long bed worth even more. I guess I should thank you 😂😂😂😂😂
New sub love this kind of stuff
Thanks for the sub!
Awesome job !!
Thank you!
Yep now I'm guna look for a short box
Look hard and you will find one.
You need a good mic phones all the way up barley hear you .. nice work
Thank you! I will work on the audio.
What size tire you got on them wheels?
Good video can I ask what are the size of your cooper cobras
Thank you. 275/60R15 in the rear and 245/60R15 in the front.
I have an 82' GMC Sierra LB i just picked up......Brothers have a template to do this conversion.....i found a SWB truck bed......hopefully i can find someone here in Texas to help me out. If not can i pay you guys to convert mine???
I believe that the Brothers template is very good. It was unavailable when i was doing this frame. We are in Oregon.
I would’ve chose stick for welding the frame but mostly more joint prep with flap disk
Thanks Andrew.
Is this the same truck as the green one?
1973 to 1987 have virtually the same frame, cab and box. Minor changes.
I have 1974 c20 crew cab do they a template to shorten for 6ft bed
Brothers truck parts sells a kit. But they are unavailable at this time.
@@RustyDuckGarage thks
I really like your work. This truck starting life as a long bed, I'm thinking it had 20 gallon fuel tanks? If so, were you able to put the 20,s back in or step down to the 16 gallon tanks?
This truck had factory short 16 gallon tanks. I was able to reuse.
How you like that welder
I like it. However using 110 I think 3/16 metal is the max.
I’m looking at a c-20 that has the swb conversion on it. It has been converted from 8 to 5 lug. Is there any reason I should avoid buying a truck like this? I’ve owned c-10s don’t know much about the c-20s
It all depends on the quality of work. 8 lug to 5 lug is bolt on parts. Check the frame closely to see how they welded and supported the frame.
Why not cut it ahead under the cab and load it back together that we'd never see it and you wouldn't never see it if anybody looked under the truck that I've seen a lot of guys do that that way if you take it to show you'll never know that it was well done
Joe. The 67-72 trucks are cut under the cab. Normally the 73-87 trucks are cut where I cut this one. The outside of my frame is smooth like factory. Inside the frame you can see the reinforcement but with brake line, fuel lines, ebrake cables it is hardly noticeable.
U said 14 and half cut off on the drive shaft but frame u cut 14 inch only can u tell why half inch more the shaft???????
Because when the truck is lowered it brings the diff closer to the trans by about a 1/2 inch
is it possible to get a drive shaft from a short bed?
Yes. A driveshaft from a short bed should work.
Would this work on a 72 c20?
Yes. But is cut under the cab. Requires a lot of work.
DRIVE SHAFT??
Yes. I had it shortened. Don't recall the length.
I wanna see someone shorten a frame NOT do any gussets and then abuse the snot out of it to prove when you weld steel to steel properly it's pretty strong...
The gusset is insurance.
@@RustyDuckGarage I know, I'd do it too, but doesn't mean I don't want to see it🤣
As a welder fabricator and current body shop owner. That is not the proper way to use that cut off wheel. ALWAYS make it pull away from you not pushing towards you. I have scare to prove it.... JUST a FYI.... keep it safe
Thanks for the tip
Long beds are cooler. Harder to park maybe. We got all kinds of useless short beds over in Alabama.😂
Nothing wrong with a long bed.
What is the wheel set up ?
15x8 Rally wheels. 275/60R 15 on the rear and 235/70R15 on the front
Z cut is unnecessary look at an old dealership service manual from that year they cut them straight when sectioning looks good tho
Well I tend to agree. However I thought the z cut may be just a little stronger. Most class 8 truck frames are also cut straight.
@@RustyDuckGarage fair enough. it probably is a little stronger marginally though at best. Straight cut with a brace across inner frame where sectioned is the way I’d have done it. Many ways to skin a cat though haha no hate, cool project.
Tyler I believe you are correct. The next one I do will most likely be a straight cut.
@@RustyDuckGarage I’ve never done this exact job but I come from the collision repair industry so that’s the pocket my two cents comes from haha look forward to your next video man
Why not just frame swap
Short bed frames are hard to find and can be expensive.
