- Short box conversion here we come. We are finally getting the chance to convert the long bed to a short bed @ Rusty Duck Garage The finished bed will be the same length as the stock original ShortBed. We chose to convert this to a short bed just because we like them better. And they don't take up as much garage space. The 79 C 10 as you will see in the videos that the bed is virtually rust free. As we cut the bed you can see inside and there is no rust. I chose to leave the bed mounted to the frame. In this video I cut the rear section removing 6 inches from the bed sides and the bed floor. I also cut off 6 inches from the frame. I moved the rear crossmember forward to holes that were already in the frame. I moved the rear section forward and made sure everything lined up properly. I took several measurements to make sure that it fit the way that it should. In the next few weeks I will be welding the rear section on and cutting on the front section. The front section will take longer to do because of the fuel tanks the driveshaft the brake lines in the emergency brake cables that will need to be shortened. However I learned a lot while cutting this rear section and will be able to do it much quicker on the front section. Almost no rust. ls Stay tuned to the end where we have some visitors. hope you enjoy this video. Thank you. 383 and tell us what you think. Primered is best. c20
Short bed is popular. I used to own one. But now I own the long bed. And I love long bed.
I have both. But wanted this one to be a cheap short bed.
Never thought I’d watch a circumsision on UA-cam..
Good one!
@@RustyDuckGarage where u guys located at ??
Amity Oregon
Stupid long beds
Is it still a circumcision if they cut a slot?
This is one of the few trucks that looks really good as a long bed, but they all look better with a short bed. Nice truck and good work.🇺🇸
We agree!
LMAO! Short beds are for boys who can’t handle long beds. Just say you can’t handle a long bed without saying you can’t 😂😂😂😂
@@MissleT0E Exactly not to mention the long box is far more functional hauling lumber, stone or anything really ... kind of like a bigger DS#K lol
big fans out here in missouri! dad misses you guys and says we could use some rusty duck shirts!
Thanks Clete !! it has been a long time since we seen you all. I will see what I can do to send you a couple shirts. Tell everyone hi.
Good information and video. Since the longbeds are so plentiful its almost the only thing you can afford nowadays.
Very true!
See a lot of 60/70s videos of shortening bed not a whole lot of 80s love the video guys great content!
I noticed the same thing
I’ve done this and found the rear crossmember moves forward about 6”, the holes are already there to bolt it in. Cheers
Thanks John. Yes they are and we will be using them.
How much will cost to do the same job in a similar truck
Que bonito trabajo hermano espero con ansias el resultado final, saludos desde México donde abundan las pick up clasicas, pero la mayoria sin ser restauradas!
Many years ago me and a friend put a reg cab on a 2wd Blazer chassis and we bobbed the bed in pretty much the same way
cool!
I understand the SWB looks better, but I wouldn't mind having a LWB. I remember back in the day (before older trucks got stupid expensive) you could buy a nice LWB for almost half the price of a SWB. I have a weird soft spot for step sides tho lol My good friend in highschool, had a LWB 1983. Clean truck, 350, automatic etc. He tried to sale it, and never got any offers. He and his dad cut it down to a SWB, threw on some different wheels, and it sold the following Friday lol
Short sell fast.
Longbeds cost more new
@@MissleT0Elong beds get no play
I have often thought about doing this project, but life always seemed to get in the way! I will be watching, HAPPY TIMES AHEAD GOD BLESS THANK YOU FOR THE SHOW!! I LOVE IT !!
Thanks Dennis. It is hard to find the time. But we are going to get it done.
U really had my intrest when i seen the truck but id never do that to a gem like that
Those gems are probably one of the most produced trucks in history.
I hear ya! But I had to do it!
One thing every body forgets to mention is you need to shorten the chassis the drive shaft brake lines n wires you would need a welder I seen people just bolt the chassis with plates no bueno 😎✌️
Awesome work, cant wait to see the end result, p.s. that k10 is F'ing beautiful
Thank you! Should be cool.
Looks good Have built several 68-72 into shortbeds
Thanks. And good for you!
I did this on a 69 and shortened the bed before finding a step side bed later. I would suggest taking the bedsides off and try and fix any dents before hand... I did mine on a old 3/4 ton for practice before trying on a nicer truck later... I didn't take the time to fix a large dent on the driver's side and it made putting back together much harder and part of the reason for replacing the bed. But the passenger side worked great. And I am not a body man.
Thanks Chad
I like this one how it turned out
Thank you! hopefully I will finish it this winter.
im going to make mine a short bed to , glad i saw this video
Cool! it is a lot of work. Have fun.
@@RustyDuckGarage already seeing its a little more than i thought , but i will get it
I take it, that when you set ya laser level, you checked it was set square to the cut and that the truck bed was sitting level.
Yes sir!
Cant believe your cutting ip a super awesome lookin long bed. 😥😥😥😥
You and me both!
I’ll be watching these videos several times.
We will keep them coming
@@RustyDuckGarage nice vet in the background bro love that truck and the vet I subscribe
Thanks. That is my friends Corvette. It is a good original car.
Looks an awefull lot like Lafayette and Russ nice to see you brother .
Lafayette Oregon it is!
Oh man I was loving this build until you gave her a haircut! Much prefer the long bed!! Never mind !
Fair enough! Check it out when it is done.
@@RustyDuckGarage I will for sure. Learning a lot nevertheless. Cheers for putting the time and and uploading.
What you going to do about the rear end being off? it's going to look a little funny with the rear back so far..
We will take 14 inches out in the front.
Nice ‼️ looking forward on your progress 👍🏾
You and me both! Should be fin.
I want to see part 4 how you will tackle the frame welding
Will do.
Nice Job! i did mine also but was lucky to find a decent short bed so that save me lot of time and labor! for the rear brass you just have to move in inside the frame youv got already the same set of hole to to that! :o)
Thanks for the tips! I have short bed I could install. I want this patina and I was in for the challenge.
@@RustyDuckGarage good choice to save this patina.....mine is plain white faded so was easy to match! ;o)
Thank you. I have another bed but didn’t think I could match the paint. So here we go.
Long bed looks way better
Thank you.
Man I like the way your truck sit how many inches is it lowered down it sit just right I like to get my truck sitting like your
Ronnie. 4 inches in the front and 6 in the rear.
@@RustyDuckGarage man it looks like it's sitting level on the video like that
I have no clue why, but I have seen some of these trucks at shows that have been cut this way, and I think it looks killer just welded back up together and left exposed. Let it rust and all that. The patina is beautiful and that rusty cut would add to the character. Then throw a matte clear over the whole truck once the color has changed on the welds.
Exactly. Not sure why I really like them that way but I do. Some do not see it the same way. I’m more drawn to a truck with patina than a shiny truck. I’ve had cars and trucks with nice shiny paint and I felt like I had to be so careful how I drove or parked them.
@@RustyDuckGarage meeee too. I agree
Lovin this! Keep up the great work!
Thank you! Will do!
NICE WORK GUY,S.
Thank you so much 😀
i only have 1 question , what is wrong with the size of bed the truck bed was assembled with from the factory
Nothing. Short beds are more sporty.
How do you find your spots to cut?
I know the size of the sections you cut but how do you measure for placement of the cuts from the front or back
This is going in my saved videos 😎
Thank you!
How do you weld it ? Mig ? Im guessing ! Not that I know anything about trucks but I would love to do this
Yes. I use a 110 volt mig welder. it is a lot of work but fun to do.
Nice work I’m gonna try it. By the way that’s a Duce
Thank you!
*This is going to sound stupid, but I've always wanted to see someone try it. Once you have the bed marked, remove the bed, and take it to a water jet facility and have them cut it...*
Would be a nice clean cut.
@@RustyDuckGarage
Yup, that's what I'm thinking. I got the idea from a water jet channel here on UA-cam, and I called a water jet company for general inquiry in my local city, and they told me they could cut anything....
I've seen it cut next to the cab ,never near the the tail gate😬
We will take 14 inches out in the front also.
i don’t get why you would want a shorter bed but good work
You and me both! I love my LWB and knowing that people do goofy ass sh*t like this keeps me up at night
Reminds me of my ex as she left ,said that bed will never be the same, lol
No it won’t be the same. Sometimes change is good.
Awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it
Really that's a nice cut !
Thanks Wayne!
I'd do stuff like this is had had the time and skill.
Great job !
Thank you!
Long beds look better than short beds in my opinion
How about a medium bed like this one?
Well I'm not sure there is a short bed 8 ft bed and the rare and ugly 12 ft bed
I like the 8 ft and
I like them all but wanted this one to be a short bed.
Super clean work guys
Thank you!
Hey great video !!! what size drive shaft did you use after the conversion ?
I had the original shaft shortened 14 1/2 inches.
Awesome!!
Thanks!
Hi a thanks for the videos Do I have to cut the drive shaft to? or What car can I get a drive shaft?
Yes. You will to have a driveshaft shop shorten the shaft.
Cninjon su travajo 👍mi profesionales super cninjones
Gracias Amigo!
Anybody can restore and old ride ..... It takes a man to cut one up 👍
Thank you!
Does this affects the way a truck runs afterwards?
I want to do it too, bit skeptical tho.
No does not effect the way it runs and drives. It is a very big project and a lot of work.
i never realized it was a 20" difference!!!
Yep. 14 and 6.
@@RustyDuckGarage I thought it was 12 and 8?
@@gregraper2188 No. 14 in front and 6 in the rear
@@RustyDuckGarage @if i have to shorten a lo g bed truck, i will leave it medium size, between a short/and a long bed,, will be unique
Wait? I’m confused. I like how you did this but how come I see people cut 14” out of the frame and cut the front and rear of bed to do a short bed conversion. Can you or someone elaborate
why do you like short bed that much , that's a lot of time involved, just wondering.
Thats a good question. Because every farm truck was a long bed and we rarely see a short bed running around.I guess to be different.
I’m no genius but aren’t you supposed to cut in front of the back tire??
Yes. See my other videos.
I thought the difference in size was in the front of the bed.... Not the rear
Both. 14 inches in the front and 6 in the rear.
@@RustyDuckGarage ok. Thanks for the reply. So you are going to change the front also?
Is that a 5/7 drop with 245/55/15 tires? What would charge to do this job?
275/75 R 15 in the rear
One question how are you bolting on the rear bumper
I was really digging the long bed. Wish you could have left it.
Looked good. But I hope you like it when it is done.
The wheel base it still like a long wheel base ?
I will changing that.
you don't have to remove crossmember grind tops of rivets and angel cut back of rails
Thank you
Hello nice proyect is that posible whit long bed s10 year. 1983
Hello. I have not seen it done. But it could be done. Buy a used bed and shorten the frame.
If it didn’t come short, it doesn’t count. Sorry. Not sorry. Lol. This looks funny.
No problem! It will look right when finished. Thanks for watching.
@@RustyDuckGarage just sayin if you were gonna do this at the least you could of done it the right way which is changing the chassis, then cutting some from the front and some from the back.it looks funny with the tank there. Is like not short or long. This is a medium bed. 😂😂
@@Programz26 I will be taking 14 inches out in the front and shortening the frame. Stay tuned.
@@RustyDuckGarage can’t wait to see.
It would have been a whole lot simpler to. Replace the bed with a short bed instead of doing all that 😛
Going to the Supermarket is easier than hunting and fishing but not near as much fun.
How much do new short bed quarter panels cost? Would it be reasonable to shorten the inner structure and buy new quarters?
Yes. But I like the original paint.
I’m not familiar with the Chevy trucks , honest question why wouldn’t you buy a short box? No hate I’m just curious if they are too hard to find or just too expensive ?
Only the devil knows.
I want to keep the original paint as much as possible. Also just for the fun of it.
Bob! Good one
Thanks!
Great job man
Thank you!
Tan bonitas que son de caja larga y ese cortandola -.-
OLA SALUDOS .. PUERTO RICO WATCHING.
Thank you.
How much to do 1 more?
Sorry. Only work on my own trucks.
Looking good.
Thanks 👍
How far in from the rear did you start your removal of the 6 inches
Michael. if I was to do it again I would start at the edge of the tail light.
What about the gas tank door?doesn’t that have to be moved?
Remove the 20 gallon tank and install a 16 gallon short bed tank.
Question about the rims what the name sise and size tires
15x8 all the way around. Cooper Cobra Radials 225/70R15 and 275/60R15 Rear
@@RustyDuckGarage thank you very much look amazing
Would a short bed off a short bed if you could fine one would that been esier
Yes. Much easier. But I liked the original color (matching patina) and it cost very little to do this.
Nice 👍
Thanks ✌
Nice
Thanks
I got a short bed square body bed.. wouldn’t that be easy to buy one?
It would be. If you have the extra cash.
Lookin good.
Thanks Darrell!
What wheel and tire size? Awesome setup !👍🏽👍🏽
275/60R15 in the rear. And the front is a 225/70R15 on 15 x 8 Rally Wheels
It all with out in the long run
how many inches are removed from frame 20 inches total 14 up front 6 in rear? and how many out of bed
Correct 14 up front for bed and frame. 6 in the rear for bed and frame.
Butt weld ? I always liked to use a hand flanger for the weld.
I considered flanging it but don’t like that it can trap moisture in the flanged area.
@@RustyDuckGarage At least you have some real metal to work with.
That's a Softail Deuce not a Heritage, completely different tank, fenders, bars, lights, wheels etc
Thank you!
Do you plan on showing any of the actual work like cutting and welding?
I will show some on this section. And more when I cut the front.
Don't you have to shorten the wheel base?
Yes. Only in the front. I will do that in part 4 video.
Why not just get a short bed from the wrecking yard?
Very hard to find in short bed. Also I want retain the original color.
That's a lot of work for it to not look right
Your right. It is a lot of work. However we will remove 14 inches out in the front also.
How much would this cost at a shop?
$3,500.00 for shops that specialize in this procedure.
Do you plan to fill in that "middle" stake hole?
Yes. But at a later date.
@@RustyDuckGarage Just checking.
Were can I buy parts for A GMC 4x4 year 1979 ??
Brothers and Classic Industries.
How's it coming along?
Gabriel. It’s coming along nicely. I’ll try to give an update next week.
Question
Wheel base is the same in a short bed and long bed ???
No. We will be cutting the frame 14 inches.
Hello. I have a question your 1968 c10 truck you have it for sale?
Sorry. The 68 is not for sale.
Thanks 😥
I would just lose the 6"it looks cool makes it look low maybe chop the top do a real chop top don't drop the pillars back that would look good you could call it a 7.5 with a drop top
Good plan.
The problem is the cab to rear wheel bed spacing. Too long
Stay tuned. we’re going to fix that
We shorten the frame and get a different bed.
That’s one way to do it. I wanted to keep the original paint.
I want to take out 22 inches from my 8 foot bed from my 47 Ford.
Go for it!
Looks like a Softail deuce to me
I think you are correct!
