Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is an amazing film, and a perfect ending to the best trilogy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thought it kind of fails as a part of the MCU. It doesn't set anything up, and one of Marvel's best characters, Adam Warlock, is an afterthought. But this is a movie that is concerned with being a move first, and setup second.

This move is great-not perfect-I’ve got some gripes about it and James Gunn’s style overall. But this is by far the best Marvel movie since Endgame and this is the best marvel trilogy.
Yes, even better than Captain America. I felt like the Captain America trilogy was so reliant on the other MCU films-like you really could understand Civil War without watching the Avengers and Age of ultron-that it took away from those movies feeling like a trilogy. And Thor the Dark world and Iron man 2 were soft spots in their trilogies-plus this movie actually brought this story full circle.
So many themes and character arcs were introduced in the first movie that weren;t resolved until now. Peter's mistrust of earth perth sucks]. Rocket’s origin [i didn't ask to get made]. And I loved how, unlike, say, the Star Wars trilogy, this wasn't about taking down a single villain throughout 3 movies, this was about how these characters grow and learn to love themselves.
But let’s look at the whole of this franchise, so we can really get the context of volume 3. We don’t really talk about it, but Guardians of the Galaxy might be the second most important movie in the MCU, after Avengers.
    Doug: Why’s that?
Wwii first of all it introduced us to Josh Brolin thanos. I also widened the scope of the MCU into space, which we take for granted now-and it really set up the infinity saga [6 infinity stones…, collector]. But most emotionally, this was the first MCU movie about characters that nobody knew about except for me and my friends. This franchise proved that audiences would turn out to see good marvel movies. 2014 was kind of a comeback year for the MCU, with Guardians and winter soldier following up the first season of agents of shield
Back to what I was saying, this franchise has always been key to the MCU. It was supposed to kick off the slate after Endgame, but thanks to the world's stupidest controversy, the movie was delayed 3 years and Marvel lost Gunn to DC. [clip]
This was also the first blockbuster franchise to give indie director James Gunn a runway to put his voice in front of a large audience. This was also the first franchise to bring Pop music into the MCU-and now they all do it, with dad rock littering the soundtracks of infinity war, endgame, and more.
And this movie chose its soundtrack so perfectly. I talked about some of these choices in our easter egg video, but gunn is the master of the needle drop. Each song not only sets the tone for the scene, but its lyrics or backstory have some special meaning for the characters in that moment. No sleep till brooklyn slaps-but Gunn chose to play it right when the guardians come together for the last time.
And the song is about the beastie boys powering through their tour until they get home to brooklyn.
Guardians 1 is so close to perfect. Every scene flows perfectly into the next, like a New Hope, and it’s so funny and inventive [clips, black light, metaphor]. And damn if this doens;t get me every time [we are groot]. And it left you wanting more. I always thought volume 2 was a bit more clunky. It felt like a director who was able to do whatever he wanted, and maybe indulged things a bit. It slows down in the middle, with everyone taking long periods to talk-still great, but drags a bit. But volume 2 also has more heart than most other MCU movies [but he wasn't your daddy].
And then volume 3, which has more heart and soul than any movie I’ve seen in a long time. You can tell that everyone involved in this cared about this story. From the script, the acting, to the visual effects, this feels like a family of professionals who wanted to give this franchise a proper send off, into the great beyond.

It made him look like an idiot tho. It's obvious to everyone that she isn't the same person, that she is entirely different from the girl they all knew. His continued insistence for even a little bit only served to degrade his character and make him look like a fool. Everything still could have been accomplished had he just used the word "her" instead of "you" and it would have maintained starlords credibility. As it stands, he is just a goofy comic relief character.
And emotional manipulation in this movie was off the charts. It was insultingly bad. Plus Kang 2.0 was just as one dimensional and hard to watch as most of the villains coming out today.
Aside from all that I would still say it was an okay movie if not for one scene ..one damn stupid pinnacle of manipulation scene. A scene so bad it's up there with Indy getting in a refrigerator to survive an atomic bomb, or Leonard Nimoy butchering his iconic wrath of Khan line for transformers. The baby Raccoons scene ... Ruined the movie.
With a few easy direction changes this movie could have been amazing, as it stands, it was just disappointing.

Loved the scene towards the end of the movie. Rocket decides to end it and not run anymore and walks back into the higher evolutionary ship. Gamora looked at the group like NO we are leaving. i think adam warlock is OVER USED in this movie. gunn even said he was forced to shoehorn him into the story at the last minute, giving him things to do that were probably meant for other characters originally (hurting rocket, saving peter) or not supposed to happen at all (showing the henchman they mean business - moments later nathan fillion references him like he wasnt just murdered in front of him)
it would have been better if adam was teased, like he almost destroys the crew but fails so high evolutionary takes him in for 'upgrading' (tearing him apart to give his best attributes to a superior vessel, maybe giving him a soul stone somehow) and we are teased that the being is getting so powerful it can xyz but due to its naivety doesnt know it will be scrapped for parts or whatever, rocket realizes what is happening to adam as a parallel and saves him from the exploding space ship, prompting him to want to join those who accept him as he is, the GoG
adam gets 20 min of screen time, more than the high evolutionary. cut adam down to about 5 minutes and it makes the movie almost a perfect 2 hours, and flows a lot more naturally.. but i get it.. business.. money.

Like Whitney, I also really liked the way Gamora's story ended; both of them. Gamora dying in Infinity War was absolutely tragic, and unfortunately, tragedy seems to follow Peter Quill. His mom died, got kidnapped on the same day it happened, followed up with a rough, borderline abusive upbringing, etc.
Until he met Gamora, he had no good and/or real relationships, but then he met Gamora and the rest. At any time any one of them could've left the group, if they didn't really want in their heart of hearts ppl of their own to love and be loved by in return. Instead, each one chose to stick around and build on the relationships.
The new Gamora's ending was touching because to me, it showed that no matter who Gamora is, she still wants that same thing, a family. This Gamora just happened to find it with the Ravagers instead of our beloved crew. Also, this Gamora never had a falling out with her sister, so it makes sense that they'd still be in contact, considering also Nebula's growth as an individual.

Now, far removed, I'm getting married this week to a new beautiful woman who is my best friend and lover and will be an amazing step-mom. This movie was a nice touch to me.

The situation with Gamora isn’t a twin sister situation like some are mistakenly comparing. She IS Gamora just from a slightly earlier point in timeline which means she is very much fundamentally the same character that left Thanos, joined the Guardians, and fell in love with Peter. Given enough time Peter absolutely could successfully woo her again. I mean that’s kinda his superpower. And you could see her character arc where in the beginning she was like Gamora in Guardians 1 with a lot of contempt for Peter as a clown but by the end you could tell she understood how a version of her could have fallen in love with him and the movie hints it could happen again. I’m glad he doesn’t get her back in this movie because it would have rung false and been too quick and easy but you’re crazy if you think he’s isn’t getting her back later. She said “I don’t think so” at the beginning to “we must have been fun together” at the end. I think that’s all the subtext you need. He let her go at the end but she’ll eventually come back to him. Book it.

Multiverse of Madness maybe? Speaking of which like Raimi, Gunn just kind of gets it. The pulpy…ness. The sincerity and cheese mixed with really hard almost unsettling moments. There is a singular voice to these Guardians movies where Gunn is wrestling with some tough and personal stuff and he’s only grown as a filmmaker. While counter earth has some of that muddy grey look to it, this is generally well lit and lively in not only its framing, but also camera movement. This will be one of Marvel’s last highs for a while. Loved it and I will miss this gang, but I kind hope we never see them in this current timeline. Perfect ending.

Great discussion. I had to jump in as someone who is the huge Adam Warlock fan. I started reading his stories with the Jim Starlin original run when I was a little kid. He was immediately my favorite Marvel character, and since then I have collected every appearance up through when Starlin left Marvel and other writers took over the character (and did not understand him). I used to draw Warlock in my school notebooks. So if anyone could be critical of the way he was used in GotG 3, it would be me. I thought it was just fine! Look, as Ryan alluded to, for a long time Warlock in the comics was this misguided man-child. He broke out of his cocoon and spent several years doing naive things, like kidnapping Thor's girlfriend because Adam wanted a mate. So actually, I will claim that this take on the character is actually pretty comic accurate. And I am actually glad the angsty Starlin Warlock cosmic story was not touched, because that needs its own movie(s). And we had better get the psycho clowns scenes that were a parody of Marvel execs! Warlock did not become this character until Starlin created a group of characters based on a psychology class he took wherein each character represented different mental illnesses or states. In one of those old comic interview magazines if I recall Starlin said Warlock was paranoid schizophrenia. I actually dread and look forward to a Warlock-centric movie because the Starlin cosmic saga (Captain Marvel, Warlock, Silver Surfer, Thanos Quest, Infinity Gauntlet/War/Crusade) was easily the best cosmic story every written for Marvel. One note about Gamora - she was Warlock's girlfriend for decades in the comics. So I was actually glad this Gamora did not hook up with Peter, because hopefully she and Warlock can get together. And remember, Warlock can incubate in another cacoon and re-emerge as a completely changed character. We have had naive Warlock, Paranoid Schizophrenic Warlock, Post Soul-World Warlock, the Infinity Watch Warlock, he was even the Living Tribunal for awhile.

I feel the audience really care about the Guardians more so then other MCU heroes for the following reasons. I think you have really horrible pasts from each of the Guardians.. and you see and feel the loss of each member and makes you understand why they care so much about the ones in their lives now and do anything not to lose them like they some have ( lost a Mom / had family murdered / tortured by a tyrant / experimented on etc ). That in turn it really gets the audience to buy in why each member of the Guardians will go to the end of the earth for their friends. When you saw Starlord not blink that he was going to save his friend Rocket.. it was totally believable for him. When Rocket wanted go back after the high Evolutionary .. his friends didn't blink.. they would go to the end for Rocket their friend. No other MCU franchise do you get that one hero really cares about any one person the way the Guardians do for each other.

Heroes had a great goal to achieve, it was emotional, funny, informative about one of the founding Guardian’s backstory, and the antagonist was the kind of guy you just can’t wait to see lose, along with everyone who worked for him.
The only negatives I had towards it were Peter Gamora’s behavior towards each other (Peter being pushy emotionally and Gamora being pushy physically back) glad she calmed down towards the end though.

@Kuhan Block I'm sure they can afford the 30s of cgi his mask would've had, he never wore it much to begin with but the fact that it was missing completely just seemed weird

@@Cosm1c_Donut Finally somebody else pointed this out, this annoyed me during the movie because I like his mask, but I realized at the end they did it just so they could have the near death scene. Unless I missed a part in the beginning where he left it since he was hungover when they left for Rocket. But that should have been addressed and is a plot hole for the moment.

With Adam Warlock they literally say he’s a baby that was taken out of the cocoon too early. If they do continue with the IP he will need to go on his own journey to the potential cosmic being he’s destined to be.

Adam Warlock was portrayed this was because it was said in the movie he was basically a child. Few movies from now he might be closer to his comic book persona.

Hey Ryan thanks. I came to watch a discussion on Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 but the Seat Geek sponsorship reminded me I really wanted to see the Blink-182 concert close to me. Checked it out, got my ticket with the additional $20 off, and now I’m going. Thanks man 👍.

I agree with Ryan on the yelling thing. It was something I noticed when watching the film and it was definitely a negative aspect for me. It felt forced a lot of the time, especially with Mantis…on a side note, the whole ignoring Doug when he asked for a cut of the t-shirt proceeds was classic. 😂

Gunn was given a heads up about Gamora. He was asked if he could work with it. They were sending him all kinds of unfinished scripts of every movie for notes.
