1) they went to the water planet to intercept the villain 2) Carol's relationship with the Prince led her to the realisation that the villain was specifically targeting planets she has a connection to 3) there is a line in the epilogue of three film about how the water planet is fine. I got all of that in my first watch. How did y'all miss it?
Because Matt went in already hating it before watching it. Anyone with half a brain would've been able to catch all those points you mentioned after a single viewing.
@@Babivegitading ding ding! When you make up your mind before even sitting in the seat that the movie is beneath you, you're gonna jump to every conclusion, create every nit to pick, and piss on every chance that deserved a second glance. Obviously something about the idea of The Marvels pissed in his Cheerios before he saw it and he's going to stay mad bitter about it.
exactly the issue@@JustJessee :: these white men are still very upset with Brie Larson for calling out lack of diversity in the Critics Circle --- this is what Entitlement mentality does to people ...
Both Colton and Matt say they don’t know why they went to the singing planet, Aladna, but they explain that pretty clearly in the movie. They want water from them because there’s more water there than any other planet. I’m confused how they didn’t understand that.
They must have been in the bathroom at that part because they clearly said why they had to go, then did that whole side eye, Carol is weird scene. It was hard to miss.
Matt Singer never likes anything, it's all flaws and mistakes. It's just annoying because he never presents a better path for what went wrong (Ryan and other guests usually do it and do it really well).
This is 100% right. I think Matt just upset, because it wasn’t a super strong movie. But to be honest, what did you expect? It was a really good movie, with a little flaws, here and there. But he never gives it a chance! I don’t like any of his takes. What’s worse is there’s nothing to back them up.
I can’t stand the guy ……. Seriously I hate when people just complain without a possible solution. Just so whiny……. They shouldn’t bring him on anymore. Makes me click away I’ve been taken back a like because of him
There was no way the family were just going to sit around at home. I’m sure they just followed Fury and insisted they stay with him. It totally tracks with their personalities.
Yeah that part didn't need any explanation whatsoever lmao, I mean the entire movie they're shown to be super close and her parents care deeply about what she's up to. Just prior in the film there's an entire sequence of her parents asking where their daughter is and getting interrupted! No kidding they want to keep tabs lol
27:44 Monica stated why she was mad at Carol, the last time she saw her Carol said she'd be back before she knew it. That was over thirty years ago. She felt abandoned especially after she came back from the blip and discovered she missed her mothers death.
“It moves too fast, normal sci fi films take a minute to explore this new place” While I definitely understand this point; I do appreciate that it was faster because sometimes movies that do that leave us feeling “ok this crazy villain is literally destroying planets non stop, why are y’all taking walks and exploring this planets food when any second the villain could arrive and kill everyone”. Like for movies I get wanting to do that, but I feel like conversely it could feel unrealistic for the issue at hand.
Different property but meanwhile I was screaming at my screen watching Loki because I felt like it was all Loki just standing around looking at his friends and walking slowly lol
That literally happens in this movie. They know the villain is coming to destroy the dancing planet but they just fuck around instead of telling the prince right away
@@keithwoodcrest I somewhat felt that way until he literally had the power to jump through time and how much time he spent walking or looking at his friends didn't really matter haha
Also... this wasn't explained in the film, but i'm pretty sure the reason Monica had to be on the other side of the Incursion is because she does not have the power to pull. If you look at the tear, it's not symmetrical accross universes. It's like a puncture, with and "in" and an "out". By getting in on the other side, monica was able to use her energy projection abilities to push the surfaces back into place. But if she were on our side, she would have to *pull* it. But she can't Those beams of light she shoots aren't rope. It's just projected energy. all push no pull.
Yeah I was thinkinh something similar but not as well explained as you - I felt it was shown in the images (hey an example of show don't tell- I thought that's what we wanted more of from the MCU :) !) that she had to push it to close it, rather than pull it as you say
It was literally just so the post credit scene could happen. She didn't know she could fly until she was made to do it, so the movie itself sets up the notion that she can use her powers in ways she hasn't attempted. She could've tried the pull before just saying, "Nah I gotta do it this way." If she'd attempted and then failed, I would agree with you.
You guys are saying they should have had a line explaining why the family was on the space station but they did. It was during the elevator video chat. When asked why her family is there Fury just says the mom insisted. I don't recall the exact wording but it was to keep an eye on kamala.
Exactly and I felt like it was the easiest option considering her family was exposed , just bring them since they are freaking out about kamala and their house is wrecked
I actually was not excited for this film, but to my surprise really enjoyed iit! I loved Monica and ms marvel, and what they brought to the film. Loved the chemistry that the three of them had. The action scenes were really good. I'd definitely watch it again. But i do agree, I wish it was longer. Which says a lot, i wanted more! lol
That is the perfect attitude going into any movie, you were willing to give it a chance. I have a feeling the people that are saying that it was straight up bad decided that long before they walked into the theater.
I heard that the movie was the shortest MCU movie before seeing it, and after I saw it I thought "Hey, they did a good job packing everything in there," but I came up with my biggest criticism later, and it kind of seemed like the reason it was short is because it had an entire character arc missing. I really think Kamala should have had time to play Monica's foil in a 1 on 1 scene. After she learns that Carol abandoned Monica, she could have had a "does my hero actually suck?" moment where she sticks up for Carol to Monica but she's really trying to prove to herself that she wasn't wrong for worshipping Carol. It seemed too convenient that everybody was like "Just focus on the mission" until the scene where Carol breaks down to Monica. Especially with Kamala's character. Why wouldn't she simp for Carol after Monica reveals how disappointed she is? Why would she just stand back and let that hang in the air?
That’s a really good explanation on why this will likely be one of the most polarizing MCU movies ever made. When you just kinda let it bring you along it’s really fun.
Isn’t a critics job to critique? Also 50% of criticism is what’s called constructive. The movie was entertaining as most movies are. The Flash was entertaining, blue beetle was entertaining etc. a movie being fun and entertaining does not inherently make it great. At the same time one can say a movie not being entertaining doesn’t automatically make it bad.
@@Dsrgreyya critics job should be to have multiple opinions. He's just saying since the film didn't have the same goals that he prefers, it's not good. But not everyone wants every single thing explained or an extra hour of dialogue. I mean, he literally tells us how rigid and nitpicky he is by saying a film should have 3 great scenes and no bad lines. I can definitely shred all his favourite films if I just didn't want to be charmed, and he doesn't want to like anything outside of his taste 🤷🏾♂️ not all critics should be respected equally and he's definitely the kinda person who likes a certain kind of thing and that's it
Easily the best action sequences since Shung Chi. Not only that but the way it was shot up close it really felt violent which I loved. This movie is fire I dun care anymore these people are all weirdos
@@Byronic19134 yeah it was good. And yeah the action scenes are easily the best since Shang chi. I love the sequence on the musical planet where everyone is switching powers and spots. I thought it would get confusing but nope, it was very well shot.
It’s a decent movie and the over exaggerated negativity for this coming from some UA-camrs I have been watching for years is a shame. Seems like most are just following the trend and hating for the sake of hating, or it’s become cool to criticise everything Marvel make ATM instead of dissecting each individual project. Screen Crush is the only channel I’ll keep watching for awhile.
It's psychological some what. Most of the negativity for this movie comes from the already set troll negativity from the first Cap Marvel movie. Even when they say otherwise, they already went into the theaters set to dislike the movie by default. Same for most of the current MCU movies as of late. Look up "bandwagon effect." Most if not all are ok at least. Everyone is allowed to like what they like yes but most of the faults I hear from a lot of these critics are pretty null and contradictory in some cases. These movies are for one thing: Entertainment as a baseline. Anything after that is an added bonus.
So ... the movie is going for a disappointing opening because bandwagon effect? You are placing to much power on the haters, which they do not have (imagine if they did 😂 ) and underestimating the viewers and movie goers. The movie might not be bad I will give you that, it probably does what it is supposed to, entertain. Yet these are different times now, to much superhero content when the fad its starting to go away. Of course some comic fans are going to like it, but the investment on these kind of movies is humongous, risk moneywise very high. So Marvel will need home-runs or it will simply not be sustainable. If this flops, investing money will start raising eyebrows. Disney marvel will start reflecting on this, very soon.
@cflash2785 Totally agree...but they are getting worse. Writing specifically. Marvels was really good but Thor Love n Thunder was a big disappointment and Dr Strange 2 had some poor writing and creative choices. I used to notice the faults infrequently and gibe them a pass as minor....but that's getting harder to do
Bruh I dont understand any of the hate on this movie, i feel like there was good development from the 3 main characters, the villain had good reason for what she was doing, the fight scenes were really good and creative. I notice that there is a trend with the MCU where people decide that they hate the film going into it because it is 'cool', and convince themselves that they hate it while watching because they have a bias viewpoint, similar to where I think the editors thoughts are coming from. Half of his critiques just werent true, he's just hating to hate it seems. This film helped many of the previous mcu projects connect to the greater storyline which is something fans have been complaining about (which is ludacris and stupid) and also helped set up new, potetnially massive future projects that havent been annouced yet. Tbh i feel as if most of the hate comes entirely from the fact that people dont like Brie Larson, which is an embarrasing mindset to have
@@yyndsai I'm sorry that 51.1% of the population having representation in a film makes you sad. Kraven will be out soon and you can bro-up on all the peen+ entertainment you desire.
I agree completely. I thought there were a few minor issues. I loved the musical planet. I thought the movie was so fun. And all these plot points they don’t get that are clearly stated cause me to wonder what movie they watched. It’s just odd. I wish the movie was a little longer but I loved it overall.
My wife and I just watched it, we thought it was pretty great.. the three mains had great chemistry. And if you saw the Disney + shows, it was good to see Monica and Kamala again. Kamala was a joy in this movie. And the villain had a real motivation to try to save her planet while simultaneously hurting Carol for what she did to Hala.. it was a solid addition to the MCU, and I hope others will enjoy it as well.⚡️👍🏻
@@MrMLaidlaw She didn't really need much of development... we saw that she was there when Carol destroyed the Supreme Intelligence. And we learned that she succeeded Ronan and now is trying to fix Hala... I mean it's more than we get with some other villains... for an hour and forty-five min movie, it's decent development.
@@cameronwilliams3092 the movie was pretty great, the fact that we got a villain with a solid motivation in an hour and forty-five min movie, is decent...
I didn’t think the movie was that bad. I enjoyed it more than Wakanda Forever Antman 3 and Thor 4. Captain Marvel actually had personality and even though the villain was not threatening at all, she gave Carol some problems fighting which is good

Also re: Nick Fury's seeming like Secret Invasion never happened, I was watching it thinking they should use the Multiverse angle to just throw Secret Invasion in the Multiverse bin and say it happened in an alternate reality / timeline - it's the perfect get out and would mean all the nonsensical implications it has for the universe can be undone :P
I believe there weren't as many plot holes as Matt Singer talks about. The movie was rather fun. But it did feel a bit shortened. In itself it was better than Captain Marvel but would have been great if it got a bit more time to add character, specially to Dar-Benn.
THERE WEREN'T MANY PLOTHOLES. THE FILM DID MOVE AT A FAST CLIP - INTENTIONALLY. GOOD FOR ACTION SEQUENCES. BUT IT WAS A BIT "LAUGH & YOU MISS SOMETHING" FAST IN PLACES. FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN FURY CAME UP WITH A "NEW RULE" (TRYING TO AVOID SPOILERS), I WAS DYING WITH LAUGHTER AND MISSED SOME OF CAROL'S NEXT LINES. SAME WITH THE "OH, IT'S CAROL" SCENE. BLINK OR LAUGH & MISSED THE TRANSITION.
Wow, rarely have I read UA-cam comments and felt better. I feel I watched a different movie than these guys. I thought this movie was awesome and it being "zippy" was a strength. Disclaimer: I bounced on Secret Invasion 1 episode in.
It's crazy that from 2019 to now in 2023, I went from excited to see Brie Larson, someone I genuinely view as a good actress, give justice to a character I hate in the comics, to not being able to stand her character in Captain Marvel or Endgame thinking it was somehow even worse than her comic counterpart, to in this movie actually reminding me how great an actress Brie is, and making me like the character to the point of being on par with not only my favourite comic character Kamala, but the spectacular acting of Iman AS Kamala. I truly loved this film, despite it being viewed so negatively, and the best part, was that it was a pretty short movie that was not longer than it needed to be, without being too short. It's nowhere near the top even 15 Marvel movies for me, but it was very fun, and no one can deny that that Flerken scene was pure gold, cute as hell with a horror vibe being played for laughs.
Classic MCU Moments: 1. The Memory Sequence 2. Kamala falling from sky 3. Kamala house fight 4. Flurkins eating crew 5. Final fight scene 6. The incursion stitching scene where Carole just misses grabbing Monica like Marty chasing Doc in Back to the Future.
Let's assume that not every show/movie that the mcu releases is happening chronologically, they often release material over years that chronologically happens simultaneously. Secret invasion could easily be taking place way after The Marvels. Easily explains why Fury seems cooler than he should.
A thought on reversing the releases, originally The Marvels was coming out in Feb 2023 before it was swapped with Quantumania. That would have put it ahead of Secret Invasion. So in the MCU timeline this movie still comes first. It explains why Varra wasn't present on the station, and it explains Fury's demeanour change from light to stoic. Suddenly the Skrulls are homeless again.
I really didn’t expect much from this one given the MCU’s inconsistent quality as of late, but this one pleasantly surprised me. It was light-hearted, easy to follow, and it did a good job of driving the bigger MCU story forward. I genuinely enjoyed this movie when I didn’t expect too. Very solid overall.
I'm still baffled by how much I liked this movie lmao, it's so positive and delightful I'm already interested in a rewatch even though the trailer made me cringe hard
Matt seems to be knit-picking just to knit-pick. He seems to dislike this movie because he thinks it’s popular and cool to dislike and debate Marvel Studios’ success. Hating other’s success doesn’t make you cool or popular.
He is doing it because of misogyny ,simple ,they want to push this idea that marvel studios are like "man bad ,woman good, man weak, woman strong " but that's not true at all ,even she hulk wasn't like that she was overall being like "i suffer more"
I got that Monica had to close the breach from the other side because the hole was literally punched through on their side. It's like if you punched a hole in a piece of paper and tried to pull the edges back together from the indented side. Much easier to smooth the edges together from the protruding side.
I hope I never get to the stage where I watch a movie and spend my time picking holes in every scene, almost like my intention is to find fault rather than find joy. I went in expecting not very much, but found it incredibly entertaining with some of my favourite scenes in all of the MCU.
But there are plenty of movies that don't have that many holes. This isn't a low budget flick, hundreds of million dollar movies should be nearly bulletproof. Glad you enjoyed it but a company like Disney should be able to be better. There's a reason they have to keep doing a bunch of reshoots, someone is dropping the ball. I'm huge into cinema and really love some of the marvel stuff. You can excuse plenty in the first few phases but the amount of issues lately are inexcusable.

I think the best way to describe this movie is SAFE. It was not an absolute game changer but it held up strong enough. Captain marvel was a disappointment but this movie put in just enough to keep us interested. Smart move.
SAFE would have been Disney including the Hulk, Thor, and Spiderman in this movie. Disney doesn't know what to do anymore. They have already gotten rid of their best Marvel characters. The few that were left had their characters destroyed(Hulk, Thor, Dr, Strange, Wanda, Hawkeye). Now they seem hellbent on making superhero movies with only female characters. (Kate Bishop, Yelena Belova, Iron Heart, Shuri, Valkrie, Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel, Monica Rambuex, Binary, Antman's daughter, etc.) The only good character left is Peter Parker. But I have a feeling that Sony won't let Disney use him anymore.
@@nerychristian I think Disney is a prisoner of their own success. The later shows and movies aren’t connecting with what the fans expect, hence why so many theories are way off from what actually happens. They do need characters for the audience to connect with while also having more action. At the end of the day people just want superheroes to be super and likable. The stories are taking so long and it’s hurting us fans.
Nothing is bad? How do you reconcile the fact that the antagonist kills herself by getting what she wants, making the entirety of the plot moot. They could have just given her the bangle and moved on without hurting anyone.
I never thought Brie Larson's portrayal of Carol Danvers was compelling but Iman Villani's portayal of Kamala Khan was spot-on and I'm looking forward to seeing her alongside the other Young Avengers. I know this is contrary to the logic of the billions made by Captain Marvel 1 and the sub-one-million viewers of the Ms Marvel show but ANY other Avenger other than Brie would have automatically sold more seats in theaters.
I talked about this with my friend after we watched the film, for some reason they believed she could pull back the break from their reality even though no scene showed that. To me she could only release and absorb energy not manipulate like Ms Marvel so all she could do was push the plates back to close from the Fox-verse
My best friend and i had fun watching this movie and it entertained us. Thats all i need from a movie. Maybe it's just because i'm iman vellanis age but she brought this gen z vive into it that we really connect with. It's definetely one of my favorite post endgame movies yet
I'm a guy in my late 30s and I took my little sister and niece to go see it and we all had a great time. was it perfect no but it was worth going to see in the theater. Ms Marvel really steals every scene she is in and her and her family bring so much heart and joy to the movie.
40 years old and feel the same way you do. The movie was so much fun. Iman Vellani is a breath of fresh air. Besides the musical part, which was sort of funny in a camp way, the movie was solid. Going to see it again
I agree with Matt Singer on many points. Unfortunately, that's a love & hate feeling because he comes across as such an obnoxious, annoying individual. It's like he failed as a novelist and grabbed this job but kept the personality of a world renowned novelist. I absolutely love Colton though. He seems more real & honest.
The only thing Colton has been right about in the last five years is that the Flash was good. A broken clock is right twicec a day, he likes everything.
I literally asked why Photon had to be on the other side of the tear. Ultimately I felt the movie was good and will withstand time a little better because it was more “generic.”
Loving that the comments section is all about how much people enjoyed the movie! Really not interested in hearing any more from Matt. It was a good, fun movie. The acting from all 3 mains was really good, I freaking loved Kamala's fangirl geeking out moments, the action was good. It wasn't an Oscar movie, but it was far from the trash this dude is describing. Skipping out on the rest of this video after about 3 or 4 minutes of hearing Matt dump on it and make it sound like it had no redeeming qualities. I went into this movie not expecting anything great, just looking for some Marvel story entertainment, and a chance to hang out with my sister and friends, and I was pleasantly surprised with it. I got more than I expected.
Each planet was chosen for it's natural resources. The pacing was great! The whole film was the climax to events already in motion- it's an action movie that was the first half of something bigger.
Sorry gotta post again about this editor you had on the interview. He did not appreciate the time they took to learn how to transfer powers? When they used their powers together, they’d swap, what was difficult to understand that? Captain Marvel even tells Kamala NOT to use her powers to avoid the switching. Kamala and Monica actually burn their powers at the same time to switch. It seems like they spent most of the movie with their faces in the popcorn bucket. Now the other guy wants Freaky Friday with these characters? These people discussing the movie are clowns and it seems their expectations outweigh the end result… a lot they complain about was covered in the actual movie. The gripes they made were all moot.
Preech! Matt just seems to be someone who would find a negative in anything and one of these people who thinks they look cool or significant or somehow intellectual by negatively critising films. I think he confuses criticisng a film to the layman's go-to understanding of 'criticism' i.e. negative criticism and that somehow being positive isn't being ctritical of the film. I don't understand half the dislike that the three of them have but as the years go by, Screencrush becomes more negative about the MCU and definitely has started to pander to the "gender wars" within the fandom. Sh*ting on female-led projects before they're even reeleased. I mean, they did 1 trailer break down MONTHS ago and then just stopped covering The Marvels, wouldn't even mention it in their other videos. They've also made an effort to hide any mention of The Marvels from their channel homepage. Ryan sh*ts on Agatha & Ironheart anytime they come up and we haven't even seen a trailer yet. Screencrush cares more about their monitisation, merch and sponsors these days than maintaining continuity, equality, the positive healthy space it used to be. I also think they should have brought at least 1 woman on to get her thoughts because this is exactly what Brie mentioned about films being criticised by critics who the film isn't targeted at. Three white men reviewing the MCU's FIRST and ONLY all female team, already contradicting themselves.
Thought it was a good, fun movie.Targeted to teens, the younger teens I took really enjoyed it. I thought Brie Larson had the opportunity to start and show more of her acting skills and the interactions with Ms Marvel and her family worked extremely well. I couldn’t understand why. Captain Marvel seemed to have been underpowered in some of her early fight scenes… remember, whether you like it or not, Captain Marvel is an absolute beast. I look forward to see Brie Larson showing the darker side of Captain Marvel further down the line. Definitely a movie worth seeing for some great family fun.i If you are a Marvel fan, I really don’t see anything wrong with this movie and particularly enjoyed the last third!
Finally watched it last week and it was a good movie. Everyone had clear motovations, the plot made sense, actions were reasonable. It just took paying attention to the thing you're watching in order for it to make sense.
I was looking forward to the movie. But then the buzz leading up to it was so bad that I got really worried. The movie ended up being WAY better than people were saying. It's incredibly fun, genuinely funny, has a ton of heart, and the action chroeography was superb throughout. The three leads play well against each other and made a great team. I left the theatre thinking "Marvel is back, but nobody will know because they fronted on this movie."
monica couldnt had close the gap from our universe cause, as you could see in the movie, the hex tiles were facing to the other side, she had to push them from within, if she push em from ours she would've open em even more, it was pretty clear.
RESPECT! you noticed so much others failed to see. By my opinion, it's their expectations to blame. I enjoyed the movie. People need to understand that this is a theatrical cut. It would be amazing if they released a director's cut with the full scenes. Film editors and executive producers always trim the movie runtime down. For better or worse. It's all about the number of screenings.
The Kahn family going with Fury makes total sense knowing the personalities of the characters. They would never just sit behind with Kamala being involved like she was. Besides, where else would they go? Their home was just trashed and basically un-livable. Same with going to the water planet. Matt needs to go back and watch the movie again. The plot points he is missing were clearly explained in the movie.
Matt: none of these things are explained! Why was this happening? The movie: explains all those points I understand he has a higher position so he gets to come on and talk but please for the love of Doug stop him from contributing to the channel
There has been a question tho…. Which fury is the real fury??.. remember in Spider-Man I think I was, they showed him as a Skrull. Who’s to say THIS Nick Fury in MARVELS wasn’t a Skrull also. Just a thought
Another way to look at the reason for 3 characters is that we had 3 generations teaming up. Carol (Gen X), Monica (Millenial), and Kamala (Gen Z). Each one also portrayed their generations as the rest of society sees them. Gen X not wanting to talk about their feelings until they have to, Millenials wanting to talk about their feelings but being ignored or slightly acknowledged, and Gen Z who are loud, exuberant, and obnoxious when excited. These aren't digs. These are traits that are (un)fairly labeled to each generation by society, and they were on display in this movie. I enjoyed the movie. It was a fun romp, a lot of action, and not bogged down in trying to catch people up who did not watch the Disney+ shows. B-
26:07 It’s just because you show it immediately with footage from the trailers here 26:19 : the fold is going INWARDS TO THE OTHER REALITY, meaning if she used force on the side she came from, the fold would’ve gone more open into the direction of the new reality, SO she went from inside the use forced to bend it back OUTWARDS and kinda melt it together like she showed she can “laser” things when with Carol alone.
For the second part I think they want Monica to have the ability to pull the broken pieces back to shut it, but she can't do that so they have to deal with it
@@_N4T this makes no sense ✌️ I mean as an reply to my comment it doesn’t and if you meant they (marvel) wanted Monica to have this ability they would’ve have written this ending
@@_N4T because when the idea comes up Monica immediately says she needs to be on the other side for that, so she never thought of pulling, prolly because she can’t, but that’s then nothing somebody wanted/planned
The criticism Matt had about the disconnect between Nick Fury in this movie vs where he ended up in Secret Invasion is exactly how I felt about Wanda at the end of WandaVision vs her heel turn in Multiverse of Madness. I know they tried to set it up with the WandaVision post-credit scene where we saw her studying the Darkhold, but I needed another 10-15 minutes showing her descent into darkness leading up to that heel turn. Same with Nick. There's no progression from the end of Secret Invasion to here, just a disconnected jump. Either this movie needed to add 20 minutes of backstory for him, which would've been excess to the story this movie was telling, or Secret Invasion needed to have left him in a better place. I feel like in both cases it's a case of too many cooks in the kitchen at this point. Feige has overstretched himself and started handing off too many responsibilities to writers and directors who clearly don't have a grasp on their little corners of the wider MCU, often explicitly so - witness Sam Raimi not even seeing all of WandaVision, or the many writers and directors who have said they just focus on their movies or series. This is problematic, but probably not even mostly their fault. The obsession Marvel seems to have with secrecy now where they give actors fake scripts and don't tell writers or directors anything is just actively harming the MCU now. They have to find a better way to avoid spoilers than just paranoid secrecy. Also, this is like the 4th MCU movie that was cut down too short. With Multiverse of Madness and its contemporaries I could blame Bob Chapek's, well, greed, but there's clearly a bigger issue there.
Well said! The emotional disconnect was also glaring with Wong going from being tortured and watching his friends die in MoM to palling around with Madisynn in She Hulk.
@@dancingdragon3 MCU projects have never had to air in chronological order. And there's a clear hierarchy between Disney+ shows and theatrical films. For the perhaps-minority segment of The Marvels viewers who watched Secret Invasion, they could Google the answer to their disconnect after the movie. I don't think it had an obligation to address the show on-screen. The Marvels was both filmed and originally supposed to release before Secret Invasion. Even the reshoots for The Marvels came before that of Secret Invasion. By June 2023 Disney+ had been going on a year without any new MCU series, so i don't blame them for not delaying it until after The Marvels, which would be 2024.
I was expecting it to be terrible 'cause of all internet bad reviews, but it was really good, I was surprised of how good it actually is and how much I enjoyed myself. Strongly recommend
Movie was a banger, gotta admit it was extremely fast paced and I would have enjoyed if it was just 10-20 minutes longer to add those little explanation moments for the tiny little continuity bits. Otherwise, I think they gave all the explanations they needed to for the main storyline and did a great job doing so. But also, I haven’t seen enough talk about a comic book accurate supreme intelligence, looked sick!!
I think this review missed things because it has 3 males reviewing it. To my eyes, Ms Marvel and then The Marvels was a female tween - 20s target audience. And other elements more universally accessible were in there too. I thought it was fun, there were some holes but not inescapable and somewhat content driven via assumption. For example, Ms Marvel's family going to the station was explained to get them out of where they were attacked. And they covered why Carol and Monica were at odds especially concerning Monica's mom's death.
For me a Marvel movie doesn't always need to make complete sense within the universe as long the story of the movie is enjoyable, e.g. Iron Man retired like 3 times and came back for other movies without explanation. Sure the details and easter eggs are fun when you see them, but I look at every project more isolated and I had a lot of fun with the Marvels
Monica saying something like “it’s a door that can’t be closed from the side it was opened” would have helped a lot of viewers understand why she had to make the sacrifice
@@dereksreviews That plot point didn't come out of nowhere. They were literally leading to it. You were just too busy being rude by being on your phone. The cat/flurb kept eating random things and had cravings. At Kamala's house one of them even mentioned to Nick Fury that his cat is looking a extra bit plump when it was licking itself. Meaning the cat was likely pregnant. But the characters never considered that and then the eggs and then the cat had it's liter.
@jonq.public5892 No, it really did. In Captain Marvel, Goose ate objects and people. The whole joke is look, it's a small cat but it can eat big things. I would assume cravings would happen because it's biologically trying to feed and support its children, but it ends up spitting up all the shit it eats anyway. I'm guessing that line was added much later in production to make this stupid plot point work because Goose looked exactly the same and didn't look pregnant at all. Ms. Marvel's mom noticed this, but Carol didn't? Come the fuck on. How did Goose get pregnant? From what we see, it's just Carol and Goose, and they've been alone. And how did Nick Fury and a team of scientists not figure out what was in the egg? Do any sort of ultrasound or xray and you'd see a cat in there.
My kids both loved it. It was fun. They laughed out loud. When I told them the fanboys were hating on it, they couldn’t have cared less. I’ll take their review of a comic-based movie over yours any day.
Serious question, what is Singer's purpose in the videos? He brings the same energy to every appearance. You say he's a Marvel comics reader but I don't get any enjoyment from his views on most things Marvel (or culture) related
I think if they opened with Dar-Benn addressing the Kree saying how they suffered under the Annihilator, but will take what they need to fix Hala, it would've helped. Then you know why they're going everywhere and you wonder about the Annihilator, maybe even think they're the movie's villain. Then the revel that it's Carol and she is a villain to them bc she did something reckless and terrible when she first got powers hits much harder.
I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked the movie. It was funny and the action sequences were good. I am left wondering what happened to the second bangle. Kamala had it on in space then returned to earth without it. I agree with comments on how this movie doesn’t align with Secret Invasion and that they didn’t say what happened to the water planet. Seemed like they could have kept a few minutes in the movie to tell us what happened.
Yeah the Asgardian scientist mentions that the planets that Dharvin endangered are recovering and being repaired cosmically As for the second bangle, I didn't actually see where it ended up
The song and dance scene at first felt out of place but I quickly realized it's a meta commentary on what you expect a Disney movie about women would be. They're basically on a planet called Aladin, the protagonist is a princess in a castle and every body sings and dances in perfect unison and a handsome prince appears out of nowhere with gowns and gallas . It's like they're saying "is this what you expected?" before it jumps back to intergalactic geopolitical scifi
LOL ALADNA SHOULD MAKE CAROL DANVERS AN OFFICIAL DISNEY PRINCESS! WONDER IF DISNEY WILL STAND UP TO THE INCELS TO ANNOUNCE IT? I HOPE SO, THE LITTLE KIDS LOVED GETTING DRESSED UP FOR BARBIE & FROZEN, THEY'D DO IT FOR CAPTAIN MARVEL IF DISNEY SAID THE WORDS.
I don’t think Matt Singer and I watched the same movie. I disagree with just about everything he’s said about it so far. The movie was not a mess. Character backstories were explained quickly and effectively. There were very clear reasons for why the Marvels were going from place to place. Was Matt just not paying attention?
The big cat scene might be the hardest i ever laughed at a MCU movies personally and i didn't mind the singing part and my one big complaint was the villain might be the worst MCU ever has had.
The villain should've been developed more. her story made a lot of sense, but they didn't spend enough time establishing her as a person. they didn't do a great job of spelling things out to the audience. a lot of people have questions that while they were answered, they weren't answered clearly enough.
the villain wasn't the mcu's ''worst villain'' no where close, but yeah I could agree that she should've been developed more as she was extremely pure evil, with no guilt or anything. but yes again indeed I can agree with her story.
@@Ireland_CountryBall2 Definitely not the worst at all. I also keep seeing people complain that they should’ve used a better character with some eve throwing out Doctor Doom’s name, but I’m so glad they didn’t just waste a better villain the way that Gorr was in Love and Thunder.

It’s not MCU’s best it had its problems definitely felt a bit rushed at times but I really enjoyed my time with this film it was a fun and entertaining watch. Thumbs up from me 👍
Am I the only one who understood why Monica has to close the hole from the other side? Monica absorbed the energy from the Captain marvel and her ability is to shoot energy blasts. When you punch a hole in space time, the fragments are leaning concave to Monica’s universe. Just like a broken glass window that’s been smashed. The glass pieces are leaning outward from the impact so if you want to push it back together and try to mend it, you have to use her energy projection and push it back into place and then use Ms Marvels bangle power to heal the crack while you hold the pieces in place. Captain marvel and Monica’s powers are blasts. They can’t latch onto space time and pull it back into place.
It would be nice if Matt Singer ever actually had anything positive to say. I honestly get way less excited for videos with him because I know it’s almost all going to be negative.
Just saw the movie this afternoon. Was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed it. I thought Kamala was the best character but really enjoyed Carol and Monica as well. The pacing was perfect, really liked how they toed up the loose end on why Carol wasn't around for Infinity War. I even enjoyed it more than Quantumania.
@savaget2058 I was simply saying I enjoyed it more than the only other MCU movie this year Quantumania. Both are mid range movies for me but in my opinion this one was better.
I liked the movie and I’m surprised to say that but this one was worth the watch. I liked the chemistry between the characters and the action scenes were fun.
I just cant believe that there were only 5 people in my theater opening night. It was as bad as I expected it to be, but I loved Ms. Marvel! Such a good performance on her part.
The Marvels = cartoon If ur 9 yrs old, you’ll ❤ it. If you’re an adult that wants a movie to make sense, you’ll be frustrated. Really miss Marvel movies that balanced spectacle with substance. Do better.
I just watched the movie and enjoyed it a lot. I wanted a fun Marvel movie and I got one, though I agree that lengthening it to allow for more character depth would have made it better. Tbh, I bet they're going to come up and say Secret Invasion happened in one of the alternate universes or something. That's the only way it makes sense that Fury was back to being funny.
I honestly enjoyed the film despite its brisk pace. The musical number from the trailers made it look like a Bollywood sequence, so i was surprised as to why it was there, but enjoyed it. It was long enough to serve its purpose as a break in action, but not so long as to outstay its welcome. The Phlurkin sequence to memories illicited a good chuckle out of me mainly due to the fact it was a song from cats and the voice over calmly stating to the staff to stop running and get eaten. As far as the main villain, i think she did a decent job. As a wrestling fan, it reminded me of a bit of a storyline that didnt need to be explained beyond wanting to save her people and punish Captain Marvel for her actions. She wasn't as menacing as other villains in MCU history, but she didn't need to be as her goal was actually noble, but a terrible execution of method. The main reason i wanted to see this movie was due to thoroughly enjoying the Ms. Marvel show and seeing more of Kamala Khan and her family. I agree that her fan-girl energy is what the MCU needs. While everyone sees this as a possible set up for Young Avengers (which could be awesome), i am actually hoping for a Champions movie where maybe they have a sort of Civil War with the Avengers Reformed as the Champions were formed to help their local communities vs the entire universe and how sometimes the little people are forgotten after the Battle of New York.
This really should have been the TV show, instead of Secret Invasion. Every single plot beat here would have benefitted from being it's own 50min episode of a show that had the time to explore each planet they went to, and allow the core three characters to interact and develop/resolve the conflicts between them.

1) they went to the water planet to intercept the villain
2) Carol's relationship with the Prince led her to the realisation that the villain was specifically targeting planets she has a connection to
3) there is a line in the epilogue of three film about how the water planet is fine.

Both Colton and Matt say they don’t know why they went to the singing planet, Aladna, but they explain that pretty clearly in the movie. They want water from them because there’s more water there than any other planet. I’m confused how they didn’t understand that.
On top of that, Carol explains that planet was specifically picked because of its ties to her.
They must have been in the bathroom at that part because they clearly said why they had to go, then did that whole side eye, Carol is weird scene. It was hard to miss.
99.63% water to be exact! :)
why didn't the kree just move to a different planet?
They don't want to because it bursts their false narrative bubble.
Matt Singer never likes anything, it's all flaws and mistakes. It's just annoying because he never presents a better path for what went wrong (Ryan and other guests usually do it and do it really well).
That's why I click off when they do that.

There was no way the family were just going to sit around at home. I’m sure they just followed Fury and insisted they stay with him. It totally tracks with their personalities.
Also the fact that their entire home was destroyed
And the fact that Fury said that. He mentioned how difficult her dad was.
Also the fact that she is a teenager. No matter if she has powers, they are her family and they will try be as close to her as they can.
Plus how can they be completely sure that they will be safe? How can the family trust that? It makes sense that they’ll just go wit them
27:44 Monica stated why she was mad at Carol, the last time she saw her Carol said she'd be back before she knew it. That was over thirty years ago. She felt abandoned especially after she came back from the blip and discovered she missed her mothers death.
I'd be pissed/hurt too if I got dusted, came back and ZERO family members were around.
“It moves too fast, normal sci fi films take a minute to explore this new place”
While I definitely understand this point; I do appreciate that it was faster because sometimes movies that do that leave us feeling “ok this crazy villain is literally destroying planets non stop, why are y’all taking walks and exploring this planets food when any second the villain could arrive and kill everyone”.
@@dereksreviews Carol literally told the Prince what was going to happen when they danced.
@ChewieFinster right but the whole planet is at risk and could have told him much sooner
Also... this wasn't explained in the film, but i'm pretty sure the reason Monica had to be on the other side of the Incursion is because she does not have the power to pull.
Good point, that actually made sense. I wondered why she couldn't just pull that off from the other side.
She could've tried the pull before just saying, "Nah I gotta do it this way."
If she'd attempted and then failed, I would agree with you.
Good explanation- I didn’t think about this fact / her powers … thanks !
I thought this was obvious, people didn't get it?
You guys are saying they should have had a line explaining why the family was on the space station but they did. It was during the elevator video chat. When asked why her family is there Fury just says the mom insisted. I don't recall the exact wording but it was to keep an eye on kamala.

Yep, and added that the Cree may come there looking for the other Quantum Band so they needed to keep them safe.
Exactly and I felt like it was the easiest option considering her family was exposed , just bring them since they are freaking out about kamala and their house is wrecked
I thought they went to Aladna because the villain wanted to take resources from places Carol called home.

I agree with everything you said! I really wasn't expecting it to be decent but I think it was better because of Kamalah and Monica
Same
That is the perfect attitude going into any movie, you were willing to give it a chance.
If you'll look at it seeking to critique, you'll definitely find something. If you look at looking to be entertained, you'll have a good time
This needs to be a pinned comment. Super spot on.
That’s a really good explanation on why this will likely be one of the most polarizing MCU movies ever made. When you just kinda let it bring you along it’s really fun.
Isn’t a critics job to critique? Also 50% of criticism is what’s called constructive.

It was light-hearted, easy to follow, and it did a good job of driving the bigger MCU story forward. I genuinely enjoyed this movie when I didn’t expect too. Very solid overall.
it was actually an Ok film. not a great one but an Ok one. 🙂😅

Yes! Great points. Me too!
Same. Not sure how I would've made a better trailer without giving up too much of the secret sauce.
Please absolutely go and rewatch the movie because it's not doing well at all at the box office right now
@@deceiver444 I ended up seeing it four times in IMAX 3D, haha. Not because of any box office but just cause I had such a great time
Matt seems to be knit-picking just to knit-pick. He seems to dislike this movie because he thinks it’s popular and cool to dislike and debate Marvel Studios’ success. Hating other’s success doesn’t make you cool or popular.
He is doing it because of misogyny ,simple ,they want to push this idea that marvel studios are like "man bad ,woman good, man weak, woman strong " but that's not true at all ,even she hulk wasn't like that she was overall being like "i suffer more"
Iman Vellani is a treasure and has the charisma to lead the Young Avengers.
I think Dahben needed alot more dialogue to give her alot more nuance but other than that it was fine. Imani was hilarious and lovable.
I LIKED THAT THEY SHOWED DAR BEN (SP?) AS A HERO TO HER PEOPLE. "BREATHE"

Smart move.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
It wasn't safe enough because the box office numbers communicates otherwise.
@@EAprima lol knew that was gonna happen though 😂
She was on the other side because the flaps needed to be pushed from that direction. Thought that was obvious from what they showed us.
I talked about this with my friend after we watched the film, for some reason they believed she could pull back the break from their reality even though no scene showed that. To me she could only release and absorb energy not manipulate like Ms Marvel so all she could do was push the plates back to close from the Fox-verse
IT WAS, VERY CLEAR
My best friend and i had fun watching this movie and it entertained us. Thats all i need from a movie. Maybe it's just because i'm iman vellanis age but she brought this gen z vive into it that we really connect with. It's definetely one of my favorite post endgame movies yet
My problem is I just have no emotional attachment to the MCU characters anymore.
I'm a guy in my late 30s and I took my little sister and niece to go see it and we all had a great time. was it perfect no but it was worth going to see in the theater. Ms Marvel really steals every scene she is in and her and her family bring so much heart and joy to the movie.
The movie was great except for the villain as a character.
I’m 33 and loved it. (Holy hell where did the time go)
40 years old and feel the same way you do.
Agreed
The only thing Colton has been right about in the last five years is that the Flash was good. A broken clock is right twicec a day, he likes everything.
Maybe Fury was a Skrull. It would explain the discontinuity in his behavior from Invasion to The Marvels.
And their connection to Carol as well!

I left the theatre thinking "Marvel is back, but nobody will know because they fronted on this movie."

I enjoyed the movie. People need to understand that this is a theatrical cut. It would be amazing if they released a director's cut with the full scenes. Film editors and executive producers always trim the movie runtime down. For better or worse. It's all about the number of screenings.

I genuinely enjoyed The Marvels more than any other MCU release this year.
I do hope that there's an extended cut version.
Matt: none of these things are explained! Why was this happening?
The movie: explains all those points
I understand he has a higher position so he gets to come on and talk but please for the love of Doug stop him from contributing to the channel

she went from inside the use forced to bend it back OUTWARDS and kinda melt it together like she showed she can “laser” things when with Carol alone.

I really liked THE MARVELS. I had fun, Kamala was great, and it’s coming together kinda cool
This is technically set before Secret Invasion
@@sterlingarcher5698 if that’s true, then they should have waited to air Secret Invasion.

Can you guys PLEASE do a video where Matt likes something? He doesn’t seem built for nerd stuff other than being a hater.
The cat scenes in the movie had me bent over in laughter, and it made good sense as an evacuation plan.

@@dereksreviews
That plot point didn't come out of nowhere.
Finally, a note that would have actually improved the film. 👏👏👏
i mean that was literally what the movie showed us.

With the switching, there has been a great example of this done right in anime.
The fight between Hanami and Yuuji & Todo. Season 1.

I saw it in 4DX so all the flying scenes were beyond amazing!
Flaws, yes, but all in all, I look forward to seeing it again!
This really should have been the TV show, instead of Secret Invasion. Every single plot beat here would have benefitted from being it's own 50min episode of a show that had the time to explore each planet they went to, and allow the core three characters to interact and develop/resolve the conflicts between them.
Excellent point!
No it shouldn’t have y’all say that after every MCU movie lol

They've been trained to say that for the bandwagon hate. It gets them likes and clicks in their circles. But is cringe to most everyone else.
Seen some people saying it's chaotic . The movie seemed straight forward to me it was simple to understand.
I just now watched the movie, first time in 7 years I did not watch a mcu movie in the cinema. And I regret that!!! This movie was amazing and people just want to sh*t on marvel because that’s cool now.
