Today we’re going to talk about dry fasting, and I’m going to share with you my opinion about it. There are a lot of benefits of fasting, but is one type of fasting better? Let’s look at dry vs. wet fasting.
    What is dry fasting?
Dry fasting is fasting (not eating) without any water or liquids of any kind.
    What is water fasting?
Water fasting is when you’re fasting, but you’re drinking water.
There are also two types of dry fasting:
    Soft dry fasting:
This is when you’re allowed to use water when you brush your teeth or take a shower.
    Hard dry fasting:
This is when you do not expose any part of your body to water at all.
The body can typically only go around three days without water. But, your body will go a lot longer if you’re just restricting food and not water because you still have a fat reserve to live off of.
There is no research or studies comparing dry fasting and wet fasting side by side. But, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s a bad thing or that you won’t get amazing results. In theory, dry fasting may work well for some people for one day. If you wanted to try dry fasting, I wouldn’t go longer than one day. Then, you can compare a day of doing a dry fast and a day of doing a wet fast and see what works best for you.

Completely agree. I'm 56 hours into a dry (Esther) fast and I'm truly amazed at how better i feel in comparison to doing water fast. It is also liberating in that i don't even have to get water to dry and the pull towards food or television is not present. The mental and physical power are challenged and renewed. This is actually a spiritual fast, as a Christian it is spiritually empowering and just affords me more time to spend with my Saviour. What amazes me is that the symptoms i usually get when i am dehydration i.e cramps, dizziness, headache, the infamous kidney pain and such like i have had none of them. I asked God to look after my kidneys and He has shown that He is, so a 72 hours dry fast and I'm truly amazed at how better i feel in comparison to doing water fast. I'm a Christian too and last year I did a 40 day water fast taking supplements for things my body can't do on its own (supposedly) like brewers yeast for complete protein, a multivitamin and electrolytes.. and it was pretty difficult at times but I never felt like I was going to die or anything.. water tasted horrible though due to what happens to your tongue when you fast. Right now my loved ones and I really need God's help with a lot so I started water fasting for an indeterminate amount of time, but now I think I'm going to convert this into a 7 day water fast, with a built in 3 day dry fast at the end.. I was also like Des, inspired by the Book of Esther.. some people really recommend against this combo (going from water fast to dry fast immediately) in particular cause it adds a lot of stress on the body and it's my first time dry fasting so I appreciate your words, especially since you may have done it for similar reasons.

@@terinaterina3174 Yes, I definitely experienced lightheadedness sometimes if I got up too quickly. That was especially the case while water fasting because the water you consume flushes out the electrolytes. I rarely experience this on a dry fast though. What helps to prevent that from happening too often is to make sure you have loaded on electrolytes prior to the fast.

I'm about to start a 3 day dry fast tomorrow. Drinking my final cup of tea now - after having a lot of fruit and water today. Not planning anything high energy - but just a lot of rest and relaxation and prayer! I would love to let you know how it goes for me! I'll try to document as much as I can! :)
EDIT: someone just liked this comment which reminded me that I needed to update!
it was amazing. so much easier than wet fasting as other people have said. first day was not hard at all. second day was also fairly easy. I did have wild dreams about food hahahaha... like actual dreams while I slept ... and psychologically...I felt like I wanted to snack, but I wasn't actually hungry.
this three day fast was actually right before a detox that I try to do every six months... so on the final day, I needed to go get food for the detox.
this involved driving and shopping for about 6 hours. (hahaha I live rurally and it takes 90 minutes for me to get to the grocery store lol)
for the previous two days, I stayed home and relaxed and meditated and prayed a lot. work is from.home also... so I didn't really exert too much energy.
on the third day, after coming home from that morning of shopping. I did feel hungry and was a bit more tired than usual. not drained by any means...but I could tell that my body was affected by the activity.
that night, I ended the fast and broke it with a plate of fruit
(the fast was from Wednesday at sundown to Saturday at sundown)
that food was so delicious. heehehe
I definitely had a new appreciation for eating. it sounds funny but chewing and tasting and relishing and appreciating food....was wonderful!
all in all, I so wish more people would research and try this for themselves. I think it's something that would truly surprise people....what the body is capable of handling...
    no, not just handling...but excelling!
my mind was so clear. even my vision became clearer! I had a lot of energy...as a matter of fact, on the second night - I woke up in the middle of the night with tons of energy.. lol
interestingly enough, after breaking my fast, about 2 hours after the "fruit feast" I got so sleepy....it was so nice.
not my form of exhaustion, but almost like my body was just thinking me for a good, successful fast and time to sleep peacefully and deep
    was so very wonderful!

I do a dry fast from 9pm to 2pm the next day. I have also tried fasting while drinking plenty of water. I’d say the only difference is the times you go to the restroom and hunger. I’ve also weighed myself and I’d say that the results are the same. Typically with my Fasts and keto diet regimen I lose about .2-1lb a day depending if I had time to exercise or not.
Edit: By the way I’ve lost 74 lbs doing this in 5 months! Started Sep 25 hit 5 month mark Feb 25.

I've actually done 5 days straight of dry fasting, 120 hours, no water contact. It was a part of my three weeks water fast. Overall, I had huge or even magical improvements on in my health after three weeks of fasting. My skin started to look younger, my legs swelling was gone, and it looked like I completely reversed my insulin resistance. I lost about 60 pounds. Unfortunately, I didn't do this periodically on the regular basis and after some time passed, I went back to where I was. I've been fasting for about 30 years now and until a few years ago, I never heard of fasting for less than 24 hours. I've done 3, 5, 7 ,10, 14 days dozens of Times, the results were very good, but never lasted long enough. I was skeptical about the keto and every time I tried it, I was getting tired of it and either went back to carbs or went back to fasting again. One day I came across one of Doctor Berg's videos. I was amazed of how powerful this information was, it was an eye opener for me. I learned How to do keto correctly. Doctor Burg, thank you so much For all this valuable information. As far as dry fasting, based on my own experience. I noticed it forks faster. You get much better results. Faster. One thing I still need to figure out his how to avoid getting gallbladder stones. For that, I learned to drink lemon water. I heard dry fasting could be dangerous and I heard opposite. For me it really works great. I just try to balance it with water fast. In combination with KETO, it's a very powerful tool. The best part On dry fast, You don't feel hungry. You never feel hungry on dry fast. Again, it's just my own experience and I do not recommend anybody to do that, Until you get all the information. Medical supervision would be best, but I can't afford it, so I do it on my own. But that's just me. Thank you, Doctor Berg! I would like to see the video of fasting and gallbladder stones and kidney stones. Doctor Berg, I will continue watching your videos. This was my story. Daniel.

I think when it’s comes to fasting a lot of fear comes up when you are going to push the boundaries a little. I have been fasting a lot mostly 24-48 both hard dry and water, but last year I did a 9 day hard dry fastin streak with one reefed in between. I did first 4 days hard dry then I reefeded for a day, then I went for 5 more days of hard dry. I worked as usual changed nothing but skipped the gym. I felt thirsty as hell and I felt like my body temperature went up, I peed very regularly approx 3 glasses a day, morning noon and night. Our bodies are capable of much more than we think and besides health benefits one important thing is that knowing first hand that your body can do this takes away so much core fear of basic survival and this give one better mental health as well

    Hi, Muslim here.
I've been participating in Ramadan ever since I was around 7 or 8 (I'm 21 now). In recent years Ramadan has been around Summer, and that's resulted in our fasting time being around 19 or so hours. Truthfully, it's not hard. I've been able to do physical exercise, whether it be playing a sport or weight lifting, with little to no problem. One thing I think you should've taken note is how NBA Hall of Famer, Hakeem Olajuwon, notoriously kept his fast during Ramadan of which extended into actual game time. And he performed phenomenally. Enes Kanter is another player to point to. He was very important to the Trailblazers last year and he fasted throughout Ramadan and into games.
I can understand why a person that didn't grow up accustomed to doing it for a month out of the year would find it difficult. It's new. It's different. It'll take some time to adjust, but you can indeed do it (barring any medical condition).

    • @TheNerdEra
      @TheNerdEra 4 роки тому +1

Also, in regard to your soft vs hard dry fasting, we do soft. It's unhygienic not to brush your teeth and not shower. And in order for us to do our daily prayers, we need to use water in order to perform 'Wudu', which is the process that allows us to pray.

Great topic for getting various views on a subject that needed this airing. The comments here are invaluable, priceless. I water-fasted originally, and when I found out about dry fasting, went onto this, and found it much easier to cope with - apart from boredom. Drinking water seemed to whet [pardon the pun] my appetite.

Hi Dr. Berg, great content as usual. Could you please do a video on the importance of Carb-Cycling: incorporating more carbs into your weekly or monthly nutr. intake? Also how this will help your microbiome (probiotic/prebiotic health). I stumbled upon Dr. Davis’s warning against staying “Clean-Keto/Very Low Carb” too long. So this has me a bit worried and I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this!! Have a great day!! Cheers from Switzerland 🤓

I once did a 3 day water fast. I may have added lemon. That went okay. But after I did a 1 day dry fast, I was hooked. Now I dry fast on the first day of every month to maintain my health & manage my weight. The longest i have gone is 36 hours. When I break my fast, I sometimes add a little Himalayan sea salt to my water for minerals.

As Muslim we fast twice a week on Monday and Thursday on our own choice. Dry fast is infact easier as u program yourself not to eat or drink anything but in wet fast u have to remember that you shouldn't eat . I try doing IF and low carb diet..and take multivitamin suppliment with calcium along with AcV and lemon and salt water as first thing in the morning. I have lost weight almost 10 kgs but couldn't loss more...tried some exercises to fix belly pouch after 3 c sections. I need to lose more 15 kgs to get my ideal weight. I'm 39 years and after this keto miracle no one believes I'm this old. Feel good physically and mentally. My all health issues r gone. My nails grow longer first time ever🙃...it's was epiphanic. Keto is life saver... I love you Dr. Eric. U r a miracle worker💋

I've lost 10kg in a month doing dry fast before (in Ramadhan with careful food choices). That was before I knew about IF. Then, when I've learned about IF, I got excited and do a lot of IF with water. But I'm still battling some hunger problem (which I don't in Ramadhan). Usually it disappears in a week. So, I literally search this topic to see what's behind it and what others are experiencing.

Many people think that fasting in Ramadan is difficult. But in reality it is not. It is actually soft dry fasting. We are allowed to use water to brush our teeth, take shower and wash our face etc. It is also from sunrise to sunset. So less than 24 hours. The first day it is a little difficult but in a day or two the body adjusts and then 30 days go away so fast! Alhamdulillah. We are blessed to have Ramadan!

I've fasted during Ramadan, 30 days, and it is life changing. Not only are you detoxing the body from food, but it is also a spiritual cleanse. Also, your mind is sharper, and I've had so many creative ideas during a dry fast, my impulses were much clear.
And even today, if I truly need an answer, I do a dry fast because the mind is so much more clear.

The purpose of Ramadan is not to improve your health or have a healthy body, it's meant to bring us closer to God by being more spiritual, contemplative and spend more time with the Holy scripture. Just like you said!
I'm glad you were able to attain spiritual benefits from Ramadan. It is its purpose after all.
I hope non-muslims would read this and know that Ramadan is more of a spiritual experience than a physiological experience. At the same time, I really appreciate and admire health professionals like Dr. Eric Berg who holds no bias at all.
We live in a world where many people will tell you "my opinion is unbiased" while clearly they're lying. However, it's not the case with Dr Berg.

I have started a dry fast for a day and then gone into a wet fast for two days after that.
Sometimes I put my dry fast sandwiched in the middle of the a wet fast day on either side.
I have not had a good feeling about doing two wet fast days in a row and ending with a dry fast.
Mostly though I have done 1 day dry fasts as you explained, except beginning as they do for Ramadan, I have begun after lunch and gone from lunch to lunch.
Sometimes I just start the 24 hour dry fast when it is most convenient.
It would be so fun if someone could do a study comparing and contrasting all of these ways.

I tried fasting and I lasted 12 days. And holy cow the mental battle you go through is insane. I want to do it again but my doctor told me not to do it again because i developed the keto rash and my vitamins and minerals was low.
Though, the funny part was I had high energy throughout the fast. Mentally and physically. My period came that week and as someone who have cramps, my cramps completely went away
But if I decide to do it again then I have to stock up on vitamins. Especially potassium, magnesium and bile salt
Fun fact: I went to the doctor during my fast and he saw my keto rash and didn’t even know what it was. He literally had to google what type of rash it was which shocked me.

I'm Muslim and we practice fasting for a month in Ramadan. The tips is usually we follow what our prophet did, like taking date when we break our fast and always perform sahur (eat before starting of fast) and earliest when time to break the fast, and never eat until you full.
Date is a good source of energy when fasting not only because of it's nutrients, also because it provides you with fast energy. You might want to check it out the next time you fast.

Currently heading towards 16 hours dry. I'm fat adapted so I don't experience hunger or cravings etc. I usually keep my soft dry fasts usually at 18 - 20 hours. I listen to my body and I take it easy (no workouts etc.) I did a 33 hour soft dry fast recently. It was incredibly easy, but I was missing my workouts so I was ready to break it. It do find it easier then water fasts. It's amazing how I still go to the restroom without drinking any water. From my understanding that is metabolic water created from my cells metabolizing fat. I do 18 - 20 hour intermittent water fasts most of the time however. I'm maintaining a big weight loss, but I still like to mix up my IF protocols from time to time.

I want to try a 24 hr hard dry fast after I finish my coffee (now) since I'm mentally ready today, didn't plan on it before this video. I've been thinking about it lately after I watched an athletic thin woman who vlogged her 5 day hard dry fast. She had a risky-low body fat percentage and she was ripped when she was finished. I'm nowhere near that and dont plan to go extreme, tho I'm very encouraged by her result and determination.
I'm about 24 hrs into my 48 hr fast anyway, I'm sure this will be easy. I guess wearing liquid foundation is out of the equation haha.

I’m new to fasting: only about 6 times now for 4 to 6.5 days. My last two fasts, 6.5 and 5 days included three and two days of ‘soft dry’ fasting, respectively. I started the dry part about 12 hours in, and feel like it was very beneficial. I actually felt fantastic throughout the dry part, better than when I returned to water. I thought water, at that point, to be primarily a ‘vehicle’ for some salt and ACV. I initially thought there could be no merit, or even peril, with dry fasting, but am now a believer in it’s positive effects.
Incidentally, thanks Dr. Berg for all you do!!
