In this video, Dr. Berg talks about the 8 major benefits of prolonged fasting. Prolonged fasting is fasting where you would go 48 to 72 hours or longer. The body goes into survival mode when doing fasting.
Benefits of Prolonged Fasting:
1. Regrow Brain Cells - the very specific parts of the brain including the hippocampus and the parts of the brain stem. The part of the hippocampus that has been regenerated has to do with memory.
2. Increase Mitochondria - the mitochondria are the energy factories of the body. Incredible amounts of energy will be increased when you fast.
3. Autophagy - A body condition whereby it recycles old damaged proteins, microbes, and mitochondria to build new tissue.
4. Enhance Stem Cell Production - The stem cell is a cell without a purpose and is not differentiated into a specific cell yet. As you age, stem cell production goes down. Prolonged fasting is an amazing repair action.
5. Decrease Inflammation - Prolonged fasting is essential to help someone get to the root cause of inflammation and the safe way to reduce it. All autoimmune diseases involve inflammation.
6. Decrease Tumor Growth - Tumors cannot survive in ketones and doing the ketogenic diet runs your body on ketones.
7. Increase Antioxidants - The body has an anti-oxidant network and doing prolonged fasting could cause the antioxidant levels to go up because this is where the body repairs and defends itself against microbes and other things.
8. Cell Resistance to Stress - It helps the adrenals by increasing the stress tolerance and you are no longer running on the ups and down on sugar and is basically going into this repair mode where the body starts to increase the resistance to all sorts of stresses.
How to Do Prolonged Fasting?
• Gradually - Let your body tells you how long you go without eating to get used to it.
• Refeed Slowly - When you are done with your fast, don’t eat huge meals and you have to refeed slowly because it could shock the system eating too much.
• Electrolytes + Sea Salt
• Green Tea - Naturally decaffeinated would be good. It will increase the antioxidant levels
• EDTA - The chelator that pulls out heavy metals specifically excess iron, excess calcium, and a lot of other minerals.
Prolonged Fasting or Intermittent Fasting is NOT Recommended to:
• Pregnant Woman
• Breastfeeding
• Very Thin Person / Person who wants to gain weight

First rule of fasting is you don't talk about fasting.
People never get it and they are convinced you are going to die.
That's kinda like what the bible says. Fasting is between you and God, you dont show off. You do it in secret. Your apperance should be normal.

"I already ate" is my excuse when food is being stuffed in my face.
😂 True, until they see you losing weight that you’ve had forever! They think twice then!
Don’t mention keto or fasting. No one will notice
Just finished my 72 hour fast !! I’m so proud of myself🏆
How was the journey?
@@AhsanKhan-eo8dv I was very motivated through the entire fast 😊. First 24 hours were easy, I had my water with me all day, I had coffee, and I also took my vitamins at noon every day. Second day I felt good but I had to avoid being in the kitchen when the food was being prepared because the smell of it affected my stomach juices and it made me feel hungry even though I wasn’t. During the 3rd day I felt great, happy I’ve gotten thus far, great energy, I’ve visibly lost weight, the gap between my thighs got bigger, my stomach was completely flat, my skin was clean, even my face looked more slim. 🌟 Those are the good sides of it, but honestly I really missed food 😄 Not because I was hungry but because I am such a foodie! I looove preparing food and I enjoy creating different recipes. So I really missed that part, that’s why I love intermittent fasting 18:6 - it involves food on a daily basis 😄. So what I would recommend for an occasional prolonged fast is a 48h fast. That will be my next prolonged fast. I’ll try to do one every month or two. I know I will still get great results with it but I won’t be without food as much 🤗🌟
It becomes an addiction. A healthy addiction. It makes you feel so good.
only 72 hours? lol 😂
i’m fasting for the 6th day now i only have 1 bottle of water in a day and that’s it

Taking EDTA after a long fast with out knowing the level of minerals in your body is a bad idea. Plus in another video he showed someone breaking a long fast eating raw greens and another eating a steak. These are the hardest things to digest especially on a system that's been idle for many days. There's nothing wrong with breaking a long fast with easily digestible carbs like well cooked potatoes creamed in a broth with milk and eggs taken in small portions at a time. There's a reason why this guy's got millions of views on yt and it aint because he's telling all the truth.

Can u drink water still while you are fasting?
@@susanogutu821 yes. its good to prep before the fast. stop drinking alcohol before and during, if you drink. eat more veggies, less meat products. limit your coffee to one cup a day, no sugar no cream. i personally drink water each time my stomach makes a noise, also lemon water is not as boring as straight water.

This is 5 months old. How did it go? Did you achieve it? Even doing 10 days is crazy. Congrats on doing that!
@@cottage_pie I first started with 24hr, then 48hr, then 1 week, and now I've just completed a ten day water fast, only drinking water, seltzer, and zevia (stevia extract based soda, zero calorie, zero sugar, and some flavoring, no chemicals), I also took a fist full of vitamins and electrolytes everyday. I'll tell you this: the mental clarity cannot be overstated. I don't know if this makes any sense, but I could hear the silence. I felt more present than I ever have (outside of some good times with psychedelics). I plan on working my way up to a Jesus fast (40 days). 3 things I love about Fasting. No cooking and No dishes equals more time in my day for other things and also more money left in my pocket for better quality foods! Just saying!!
This is an excellent point. It's interesting, the amount of time we spend eating (preparing, eating and cleaning) and the $$. OMAD/IF, has been amazing. One high quality meal, more money for said meal.
So true! On my 80 hour fast (first fasting experience), afterwards, I realized that I hadn't opened the fridge for THREE days! hahaa So weird. And it was like...oh. I have a lot of food in there!
Also less tp as you go to the bathroom less.
@@MrDamnson Hahaha! I was kidding with my friend and said, "I wonder if I still have to brush my teeth since I'm fasting." She looked at me like I was from Mars. lol!

80 hours down. Unknown hours to go. The first secret is to start with a dry fast for 2 days and then move on to water fasting. Water makes you really hungry. The second secret and probably the most important one is to never tell anyone that you are fasting. Keep it a secret!!
Edit: An update. I managed to fast for 21 days in total. My personal record. It was incredible. Plan to do it sometime again. Good luck!!
I agree. I told Santa last Xmas and he gave me the gift. Was the only time Santa answered.
The secret is to do the clean Keto before you'll start the fasting because your body will change the fuel from sugar/ glicogen on fat and you won't feel hungry at all... With or without water... From my experience , I made water fasting for 19 days with the first 2 dry fasting.

I went seven years with no answers and doubled my weight. Not one doctor I had ever heard of so I tell everyone hoping it might help someone else. The weight has never come off but I keep trying. I have been watching Dr. Berg's videos hoping to get some answers. I have been on a fast for 8 days now hoping to kickstart my body. I don't know how long I will go, I guess when I get hungry.
@@christinagovang2475 I ended up going 2 weeks, a bit extreme and dangerous, but it cleared my sinuses about 80%, to the point I could breathe through my nose and smell things again, among other benefits. However I've been slacking on my diet the past month and getting stuffy nosed again, but nothing like before, still I probably need to do another week fast, that seems to be the optimal amount of time, exercise more and lose a few more lbs. I wouldn't have believe it if anyone had told me it worked, until I did it. Low carb keto diet, whatever you can do, IF, PF, Omad, ADF, tumors feed on carbs, good luck Christina.
I am on keto and IF now for 2 months and my next goal is prolong fasting, good luck to me
I hear u, good luck to u , I'm also trying
Wat do u eat on keto. I am blank on how to calculate macros in my food
i invest my money on good food, all organic and pasteurized grass fed animals, lots of vegies, absolutely no sugar and vey low carbs, its gonna be a struggle at first but you will get use to it especially when you see the good results, just eat healthy, it will benifit you in the long run, im a registered nurse and i see sick people evey day, one thing common is they all eat high sugars and high carbs
I did pure keto & IF for 3 months, went from a 35" waist to a 30" at 6' i weigh 167 which is pretty ideal. Just need to work on the old 6-pack now.

Yes, and how many seniors come into ER like theyre dying...but only dehydrated & sugared out of their minds??? Killing themselves with their ignorant ways...sad.
I was diagnosed with MS 3 years ago. I was in a bad way, not walking well or talking clearly. I am on 4 weekly infusions at the hospital along with a number of drugs each day. I have now down 3 x 5 day water only fasts and after my 1st one things changed for me as I was able to stop most of my medication between my infusions. I have now just finished my 3rd fast and I have now been able to stop all my medication between my infusions. This medication was for nerve pain and frequent urination. I can't wait to get on that MRI scanner come June and see if I have any positive changes.
Good luck, keep us updated.
+Debbie Griffin, that's awesome. Will you come back and tell us how it goes? Good luck!
That's amazing
Debbie Griffin ..I look forward to hearing more. My siblings have MS and would love to get them to do this too!
Good luck! Can't wait to hear the positive results!
I am a 63 y/o retired nurse. The fasting diet you recommend works very well even when not followed to the letter. But I gradually continue to have more consistency on the fasting diet recommendations, and now my mom is joining me, i had to translate all your videos to Spanish
she in not fluent in English language. This has helped with the Rheumatoid arthritis pain as well. Have a great day!
Dr. BERG has been my UA-cam Primary Care Physician for the last 2 Years. 😂
Thanks for all the knowledge!
Have a Great Christmas all!! 🎄
I’m currently water fasting, and honestly, these benefits are even more motivating than the weight loss. Thanks Dr Eric! 😊
do you remember things better
Water fasting? Is that no drinking water? Do you get headaches?
Exactly,I’ve never been my perfect weight until mid-life and Watching Dr. Berg’s vids. It’s just a side effect,I’m stronger than I was in high school!😄👍🏻🌟👑⛲️❤️🌹
@@butterocean water fasting = not eating/drinking anything except water. Make sure you do eat after an appointed time to make sure you don't get nutritional deficiencies.
could add obeying the Sabbath Commandment to be faithful.
Recently lost 80 lbs & been fasting several times a month to maintain weight.. I'm so grateful for videos like this that's educational, God heard my cry for help, and He really does miracles
Amazing
God ignored you, Dr. Berg did not.
Good job
you did that. god didn’t do that.
That’s so awesome! Prayers and fasting are definitely recommended in the Bible.
Today marks my 30th day of fasting. I was inspired by this video. Feeling fine, FULL of energy! Taking supplements, Dr. Berg's electrolytes, and Dr Berg's wheat grass.
The ONLY bad thing is I have very loose, saggy skin on my neck...I kinda look like a turkey! 😂 I'm not worried about it, though...After I decide to break my fast, I will be taking collagen powder and exercising my body (neck included) to see if that will help. If it still is saggy, a little nip and tuck will work nicely if the sagging still bothers me. 😉
To date, I have lost 30 pounds BUT the most AMAZING thing is the amount of ENERGY I have!!! I have gotten SO MANY projects done that were put off for so many years!!! I truly am a different person now! I WISH I had done this YEARS ago!!!
All of my renewed life I credit to Dr. Berg for his wonderfully informative videos and, of course, to God for designing our bodies to restore our health through His process of autophagy!!!
I just wanted to share my testimony in case some of you were on the fence regarding doing a prolonged fast.
One last thing, I don't feel amazing or heroic for not eating for 30 days...You know what IS "heroic?" It took me 5 days of feeling absolutely miserable (Very cold, headaches, recipes dancing in my head...struggling with not eating, yet having to cook for my family, etc.)...SURVIVING those 5 days is "heroic!!!" After those absolutely miserable 5 days, I wasn't hungry AT ALL and FULL of energy!!!
Hang in there, folks...When you get over "the hump," it's smooth sailing! Here's to your health! 🤩
Hello , did you experience any side effects in your body after the 5th day ? Did you experience weakness, dizziness and headache ?
@@krishnapanchal4768 I, actually, went on to complete 40 days of fasting! I STILL felt so good (I was NOT starving myself, as I still had plenty of body fat for ketosis to feed off) but decided to very slowly (as per Dr. Berg's recommendations) break the fast.
The ONLY side effect I had after the 5 days was that although I had TONS of energy and mental clarity...I was not as physically strong as I normally am and THAT was a problem for me because I run a homestead that requires a lot of heavy lifting work. Household chores were NOT a problem, though.
I got lots of compliments from strangers about how good I looked (I'm 62)...I guess I looked younger and healthy. 😊
Also, I would recommend that IF you do a prolonged fast, do it when the weather is warm...I did one in winter and quit after a week because the cold weather made me feel terrible. 🥶
Watch Dr. Berg's excellent videos on fasting. I would not have tried doing it without educating myself FIRST.
Good luck! For me, it was a great experience!! All the health benefits are numerous! The FIRST 5 days were hell for me but, once I pushed through that period, I wondered WHY I hadn't done it years ago!!! 🤩
I just finished my first fast of 55 hours. Going to try for a little long on my next fast. I refed with 1 avocado and pink Himalayan sea salt with not problems! I think doing keto and IF for almost a month and a half prior helped me to ease into the fast. I was on a 23:1 schedule. Thank you Dr. BERG. I am regaining my health. You are literally saving life.
I’ve done intermittent fasting for a while in the past. I had zero brain fog, my body leaned out easily and I had a lot of lasting energy. I loved it.
U did amazing
@@funnybones2265 thank you friend (:
I felt amazing lol.
I'm starting my prolonged fast today, can't wait for the evolutionary body change..
Who is with me!??
Any review!

Day 5 of water fasting. Lost 16lbs already and i’m planning to keep going to stay in ketosis for longer. I feel lighter and more positive, and more importantly, I’m getting more excited for myself, clothes I want to wear, and people I want to see once I break my fast. Thanks Dr. Berg!
Wow...16 lbs in 5 days?
You can stay in ketosis by not eating a lot of carbs
yo what ? wow . i think i probably lost like 2 lbs in 6 days . i guess it depends cuz i had a bigger frined who fast the same time as we by chance last week and he told me he lost 8 lbs . but im like 175 and he is over 200. it might be based on fat or something idk. but i really want to do it again
I finally did it. Ive officially gone 24hrs without eating. Ive lost 5lbs which is water weight I know. But I feel good so Im gonna try to keep going. Hopefully I can get to 72hours in this stretch. I now weigh 222.5lbs. Eventually I want to get down 185lbs but I know its going to take while. This is going to be awesome!
Am 222 aswell want to go to 185
People down play water weight but you'll look less puffy if you lose the water. That's a win win
@@shaneverbless1810 bet you never got to 222.5 tho?
Turning to OMAD eating 8 months ago and more recently to prolonged fasting is one of the best things I done for my health. So in addition to Omad eating, I do weekly 36-48 hours water fasts and monthly 72 hours of fasts.
Fasting comes naturally when you are doing keto and fat adapted.
I can say that after 72 hours of fasting my skin literally starts glowing. I have very high energy everyday and feel great.
Great information Dr. Berg.
@William Kildea Will try it one day, but I found my balance now, I have no weight to lose, no health issues, lean and muscular. I balanced out being anabolic and being catabolic. I do physical training 6 times/week.
Thanks for the info.
Excellent call John!! I don't bother w 24 hour fasting any longer and do 36 hour fast, once a week, without, without, any change to my working or workout schedule. (including multi-hour, fast paced mtn bike rides in hilly Oregon) That is one day and 2 nights with only water. I find this so natural for me that that often the 36 hour fast gets stretched out far beyond 36 hours. I learned to listen to my body this way, learning when I should break the 36 hour fast. This same "body talk" will inform you on longer fasts as well.
fyi: my longest fast has been 8 days / 202 hours. I stopped going longer due to outside pressure from family members bend on controlling me and my options in life. They simply don't like me surpassing them (one person in particular.) I really need to stop considering her opinion at all. She is a classic progressive, Leftist, very narrow minded, believing that everything must be justified by a political purpose (politics as a religion).
@captnhuffy You said something important here and that is to learn to listen to your body, I agree 100% with that.
Congratulations on that 8 days fast, that's great progress! :)
I can relate to family member pressure, my father who is on the S.A.D diet, is that way, trying to control me and what I choose, criticizing me on everything new I try, but it does not bother me anymore, I have my own journey in life.
Just don't be afraid of experimenting and if you're feeling great ride the wave and keep going.
I keep an open mind and try to better myself everyday.
John Thunder So this is a safe thing to do everyday? I’m on my second day of doing the OMAD.
@@blydhealthfitness5683 Yes it is, keeping your insulin down all day gives you many benefits, and depending on your goals you can increase or decrease calories.
At the moment I am gaining muscle mass and decreasing body fat with daily OMAD.
The only thing you have to do is get used to eating a large meal, I chew my food slow and I never eat in a hurry, your body will adapt to it.
Good luck!
I am going to start my 5th prolonged fast tomorrow God willing. I did a 4, 5, 5, 2 and 9 day fast. IDK how long I will do this time. It takes away my hunger and gives my mind a break from thinking about food. I am able to cook for my kids and not crave anything. Pretty awesome. I experienced the energy too.
Thanks Jason, it is kind of easy for me after I make up my mind I am going to do it. I drink electrolytes so I feel fine. I also take my blood pressure meds. Trying to get off of those.
Wow, are you really able to fast having kids? I always failed
It would be easier not to have to feed them lol My kids are older so I don't have to prepare every meal as they are in school or can do their own snacks. But the fasting takes away my cravings for food in general.
wow how did you do it! I tired it once and I only made it 2 days. My head hurt so much and I can’t fall sleep :(
Inshala
!
I’m watching this 36 hrs into a fast for motivation. I can’t wait for the sense of self control and accomplishment when this is done.
Started doing 36 hour once a week and it’s very helpful with my diabetes and high blood pressure. It’s a water fasting, coffee, tea, just started it it will be my third week and enjoying it.
"How many of you could use extra brain cells?" - Made me laugh. Totally innocent comment that feels like he called us all stupid lol. But seriously I'm a big fan. Great video Dr Berg 👍

I’m at 70 hours right now and I feel great! No cravings 😲
I finished my 72hr fast last week and my body feels like doing it again
My longest fasting was 40 hrs and I only ate because I needed to eat fridge foods before they spoilt .
😂
I watched this video to hear an "outside" opinion about fasting. I am truly amazed by all the benefits. Now I'll happily fast 18 hours a day this Ramadan. Thanks for the info, Doctor Erik.
Currently 5 hours into my 96 hour water fast wish me luck. Doing to reset my whole body and hopefully better clearer skin. I failed my 96 hour water fast but because of allowing my mind to be weak. Currently in a 72 hour fast have not reached 24 hours yet. I am determined to succeed.
Amazing! 🎉 Well done and thank you for the inspiration ! How did it go? Whenever I tell people I am willing to do a prolonged fast I immediately get demonised ! They look at me like I’m crazy and starving myself to die! But I have MS and I did it last month for 72 hours and felt so good! I wanted to prolong it for 5 to 7 days but got scared as I wasn’t supplementing on anything but sea salt and couldn’t find proper feedback on the supplementation protocols. So I want to ask, what is the right dosage of electrolytes and when to start supplementing ? At 36/48 or 72 hours of fasting? Would 2400 mg of potassium be enough? (600mg four times a day) I am scared of taking a big dose of K+ and ending up with complications like stenosis or ulcers or even bleeding! Sorry for being super anxious about it but your help would mean A LOT! Thank you again I really appreciate you
@@Takingitslow9 I broke my fast after the 24 hour mark I’m addicted to sugar and I’m trying to break this addiction so I’m having to start over again. To answer your question I take sea moss capsules that’s the only supplement I take. I feel ya I get the same thing that’s why I don’t tell nobody that I’m fasting I’m just gonna say to people I’m not hungry if they offer me food. I’m truly determined to get past two days and continue to go longer. Blessings to you on your journey wish the best

I did 9 days starting May 31st and 16 hour intermittent fasting daily since. Everyone in my house just got over an awful virus. I had no symptoms. I feel great.

Just started a 72hr fast yesterday, and i find that watching Dr. Berg's video's on fasting helps me tremendously to stay focused on my goal. Thanks for your expertise Dr.Berg keep up the good work 🙏👍
How was your fasting?
From my experience I must say fasting is more easy and effective to get in shape than exercise.
Amen to that.
Exercise is still necessary, fasting doesn't replace it.
agreed
By fasting you burn off excess fat. Exercise helps you build muscle, cardio etc...
Absolutely...
I’ve been daily 18/6 fasting and just did a 48 hr one.
It was a breeze and feeling good, looking forward to extending it ..!
Currently on a fast. 64 hours so far! Aimed for 3 days, but I might extend it to 7 days depending how I feel. So far so good!
I’m on day 16 of 30.. Feeling amazing💪🏾💪🏾
Just had my first 48 hour fast ever. I didn't skip exercising though, I feel energised instead. I thought I would never do that and stopped in the middle, but turns out you are stronger than you think. I'm definitely gonna include 48 hours fast every week. In the long run, I hope I could try increasing the duration as well. I find my face looking glowing and has very minimal acne even when I'm on my period. Good luck everyone!!

And finally last week I wasnt hungry and waited it out and got to 5 days. total wt lost 70 lbs and still going.

I have juvenile onset Parkinson's disease....I went through divorce from an abusive man in 2013...I lost 64 lbs because I only fed my kids...not sure why, but after a week or so, I felt extremely energetic...I had to drink a few calories a day .. I drank milk, which I understand is "bad", but it's all I had.. I had no intention of losing weight..my only focus was a biological need to protect my three babies..so, I can verify this does work.
You're already doing fasting.. To keep you more healthy, consume food such as nutz, veggies, honey, and fruits.
I'm going to try this tomorrow. I already do OMAD so hopefully I'll be good.
Since I started fasting , certain scars and moles, which I've had for most of my life, disappeared. Crazy.
I finished a 90 hour fast a few days ago and I have to tell you I'm with someone who has covid now and I haven't even so much as felt a tickle in my throat this whole time. Something else I've realised is that it's reignited my inspiration around food. Because I think about it more I'm much more likely to pick out things I'll really enjoy instead of just being a slave to sugar addiction and when I do that the whole culinary experience is improved 10-fold.
This is an amazing realization for me as well. I find myself having extremely vivid thoughts about food when i start to come out of a fast. My sense of smell had also improved, especially during the fasting.
Looks like eating is going out of fashion 😂
Bahahaha:):):) lol true!
Pretty much 😂😂😂😂
Eating is overrated anyway... :)

Tio MGTOW thats awesome! Good for you. Im currently fasting in hopes to heal some of my own health issues. What were your symptoms like before fasting? What kind of problems went away for you?
I had a cold & my appetite disappeared so I took advantage of this & now I'm on day 19 of a fast that will last at least 21 days. I don't seem to be losing much weight but my goal is to reduce inflamation & pain. The pain has reduced by half.😊
Thank you, I like your calm demeanor in your voice ,creates a good learning environment and I learned a lot from your videos. Much appreciated thank you!!
I've been regularily "fasting" for 17 hours a day for many years now,not as a fasting routine, but just because it's how I felt better.
I would stop eating around 4 or 5 in the evening and not eat again until lunchtime the next day.
I've never thought of it as "fasting" until very recently. And now that I'm aware of it I'm thinking of extending it to 24 hours.
but were you actually 'clean fasting ' during that time, so no milky drinks etc
