Who Did It Better? - The Beatles vs Zoot - Eleanor Rigby
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 кві 2024
- In this video we're comparing The Beatles and Zoot, and their renditions of Eleanor Rigby. We absolutely love the Beatles' original. But, we've never even heard of Zoot. Any time we can hear someone's take on a Beatles song, we're interested. So here we go. Please let us know who yo think did it better. Enjoy!
P.S. - We couldn't help but notice when looking for pictures of Zoot that a VERY young Rick Springfield is the guitarist. How interesting. We're going to have to hear more from this band for sure.

Zoot great Australian band. Lead guitarist Rick Springfield (Jessie's girl)went on to have a huge career in America including acting Bass guitarist Beeb Birtles was in Little River Band and lead singer Daryl Cotton went on to become a presenter on Australian television
Little River Band was huge. Only recently I learned they're Australian. And only now regarding Rick S
@@mattjohn4731 There is still a lot of great Aussie bands from the 70s, 80s that just never broke over seas who's music is absolutely amazing
I grew up hearing the Beatles and loved almost everything they did, including this song . But when I heard Zoot's version, I was blown away, love the heavy guitar sound of it. I guess that's what you do when you don't have a small orchestra to play with, they certainly made it their own.
Love them both...... Oh and Rick Springfield was such a spunk, I had a big crush on him. 💗😅
The Zoot were from Adelaide, South Australia. Same place that gave us Cold Chisel, The Angels and many more. Another classic Australian rock band from Adelaide is The Masters Apprentices. An interesting thing about The Zoot is that their name was suggested to them by a friend named Doc Neeson, who himself, would become famous as the leadsinger of The Angels. I'll get around to working on some Zoot videos. They're worthy of a few more tracks.
I am happy that both songs can live comfortably in my playlist. They are verY different but equally impressive in their own way. The Zoot have another track thats worth a listen to called "The Freak" from around the same time. A very underrated song.
I was a fan of both The Beatles and The Zoot (a.k.a The Pink Zoot) back in the late 60's / early 70's. I used to see them at many teen dances or discothèques. I was very annoyed when I first heard their version of 'Eleanor Rigby', but of course grew to love it. I had a big crush on guitarist Rick Springfield, and was crushed when they called in a day in 1971. Rick released a solo single called 'Speak To The Sky' - check it out. I dont think I can overstate how big a part of my youth The Zoot were... You're taking a trip down my memory lane. Obviously The Beatles win, but give it to The Zoot for doing it a different way.
These guys used to jam in my fourth bedroom before they were Zoot.
The Beatles actually said they preferred Zoot's version. It is a no-brainer as far as I am concerned - Zoot's version still rocks and sounds far less dated, yet holds some nostalgia. If you lived in Australia post the 1960's, you'd actually be more familiar with Zoot's version. Rick Springfield was an emerging talent here but our population and music scene was still a little too small to sustain bigger acts until years later, so he did well to get over to the States and make a go of it as a career. I'm glad he still acknowledges his heritage and spending time with his cricket-obsessed dad before he passed away to give US audiences some insight into our way of life and the soulful things that we hold dear that have little to do with fame and fortune.
Thanks for doing this comparison. Yes, The Beatles version is a classic. Chilling string quartet music, soulful lyrics and great harmonies. Zoots version was a nod to the Beatles, but also creatively doing a 'rock' version of the song. It was shot in black and white, not to penny pinch, but we didn't get coloured tv here till (I think) 1976 (I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm wrong... Lol). It was released in 1970, and was pretty out there by Australian standards.
I think there is room for both versions on a playlist, each for a different mood.
I was all set to set this on fire and to hell with whoever I upset … 😳..
imagine my fury and genuine chagrin when it turned out to be phookin awesome !!… in my book Eleanor Rigby is the final and newest chapter of the Bible and I was a little precious about a band I’d never heard of having the temerity to do their “ Version “.. but it’s so different , so their own take , that it works in spades ! I love this track , so surprised and delighted in equal measure , love the geetar on it , still prefer the Beatles but not by as much as I thought beforehand. Great effort , n thanks to the guys who suggested it - great call ! 👏
👍🏴
The fact that a band from Australia - on the other side of the planet to The Beatles - could make an awesome rock version of this song is tribute not only to the creativity of Zoot, but especially to The Beatles who created such a magnificent song in the first place!
Oh, and Rick Springfield had a cartoon show called Mission:Magic. In it, he always wore a jump suit similar to the one in this video.
For 40 years the Zoot's version of Eleanor Rigby was one of those songs where you could walk into a jam session anywhere in Australia everyone knew how to play it. It's a crank it up goof off and giggle classic.
One of my fav ever Beatles tracks , Macca at his absolute best , soulful , melodic , fantastic chord structure and a once in a lifetime story narrative , sublime and evocative . I’ll be honest , I’m dreading hearing the other version in case I’m brutally honest . 🤷♂️
👍🏴
Opinions are like buses, there's always another one coming along soon. So don't be shy, let it out!!
@@notanotherenigma7759 I did .. right after I listened to it ..✊

As previously mentioned, you probably saw some famous Australian names in this band …. Just something extra Daryl Cotton lead vocals joined a band in The U.S called Cotton, Lloyd & Christian…. Rick Brewer Drums played in a Aussie band called The Ferrets…. And you know what Rick Springfield and Beeb Birtles did……. Zoot did a reunion before Daryl passed away…. And their are live videos….. check these out…. The Freak, Evil Child, Flying, Strange Things ….. and this clip Turn Your Head…..
Zoot tried to do something different which is commendable, but for me it's a clear win for The Beatles.
Thank you for doing Zoot's version - one of the best covers of a Beatles song. It's so different. It reminds me of "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath
Rick Springfield, lead guitarist became famous in the USA after leaving Australia
Beeb Birtles on bass went on to found Little River Band.
Zoot was known as a 'bubble-gum pop' band and tried this song to break that image and be taken as a more serious band.
Another one is Dear Prudence by Doug Parkinson, that would be another worthy comparison video.
I like both versions, but the original is best. Sounds like Zoot were following in the footsteps of early Beatles' covers by bands like Vanilla Fudge, Deep Purple and even The J Hendrix Experience. Zoot remind me of Grand Funk Railroad. First tine I have heard of Zoot mind you....
If anyone is interested, Paul McCartney did that carpool karaoke with James Corden. It has sections of a live show in a Liverpool pub, where nobody was even aware that it was going to happen. It was a great day for Beatles fans in Liverpool. No doubt some Scouse scally had it away with Macca's wheels.
I seen that episode Col , yeah you could see Macca was quite moved , Corden is a colossal pipsqueak though 🙄
👍🏴
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering I have heard that Mr Corden is like a spoilt child, and he's not popular with many who work on TV.
@@colrhodes377 he dumped his original double act partner Matthew Horne like a used W*nk sock Col , and he’s famous for his rude tirades in restaurants too .. he’s forgotten his roots n all sense of humility , Billy Bunter wannabe ! 😀

Ahhh, thanks for doing this. Can't really compare these. It's like two different songs. Love them both but hearing Zoot's on Australian radio (still occasionally) blew my mind. So for sentimentality alone.....Zoot wins it by a fraction. Oh, and edit. Zoot were a short lived band who had minor success playing bubblegum pop in pink suits before going hard with this monster Australian hit. Rick Springfield (Jessie's Girl) on guitar, Beep Birtles (Little River Band) on bass and the late great Darryl Cotton on vocals. Not a bad breeding ground.
Paul McCartney wrote and played the song as you said with a string quartet. The backing vocals were George and John. Ringo was having a cup of tea .
The Beatle win but Zoot earn kudos for a great cover.
Zoot did a creative rock interpretation of a Beatles mellow track. Listen to the Zoot version a few more times & it'll grow more on you.
Firstly, both a great, but The Beatles win by a country mile.
What really caught my attention was that Zoot Took the lyrics from The fab four, and then the borrowed the groove from Still I'm sad, by The Yardbirds. It made great listening. Rainbow did a great live cover of Still I'm sad. On their first album it was an instrumental, then they recorded it live with Ronnie James Dio, and later they did the full studio version with Doogie White handling the vocals. Anyhow, my recommendation is Still I'm sad, by The Yardbirds and then Rainbow from the album Stranger in us all.
Hi Chris and Cynthia: Zoot's version was pretty good but I'll still vote for The Beatles.
Gidday, I think Zoot lose the sadness of the original. Cheers.
Like most people I love the Beatles original. But I've always liked the Zoot cover much better. Pauls already said Zoots better years ago. Rick Brewer on drummers can't be beaten on this.
Team Beatles
All the way unless it's obla-di-obla-da then it's team Marmalade 😁
@@PlasticGirl65🤣 when I was growing up I never knew about the Beatles original I just thought Marmalade were original and kooky- it was years later I realised my mistake 🤦♂️
👍🏴
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering Me too, probably why I prefer it to the original. When I saw your Albert Steptoe profile picture I thought you were replying to a comment on a Steptoe and Son video 🤣 I've been binge watching them this last week funnily enough.
@@PlasticGirl65 🤯 what’s the chances of THAT ?.. 😆

Rick Brewer of Zoot is a great drummer. I'm not saying he's better than Ringo but he's definitely on the same level
The Beatles were a big hit in 🇦🇺 Australia. We have had many of our stars cover their music.
John Farnham singing Help.
Doug Parkinson singing Dear Prudence.
And thus cover from Zoot with lead singer Darryl Cotton who can sing. RIP 🕊, and the likes of Rick Springfield who had fame as a solo artust with Jessie's Girl, Beeb Birtles who was in Little River Band and Rick Brewer on Drums.
Zoot did another cover song of "Life in a Northern Town". There is a clip on the Shorrock Birtles Goble Little River Band Founders Page. The original was from a band called The Dream Academy. Perhaps another comparison for your Wednesdays.
Actually John and George are singing the backing vocals and at the end it's John singing the backing "Ah look at all the lonely people"
Peace ❤❤
I don't know why, but the Zoot version reminded me of David McWillians and " The Days Of Pearly Spencer"
Dee Snider and Eddie Fingers Ojeda from Twisted Sister did a great metal cover. Or it is called Eddie Ojeda - Eleanor Rigby.
A great rocked-up re-arrangement of Eleanor Rigby by Zoot. What would be the point of simply copying the Beatles' original arrangement?
As a young, young kid, I thought these were two different songs until I was around ten. For me, respectfully, Zoot just wins. Cheers,
Big Zoot fan. Only wished I'd requested it myself. Great reaction. If memory serves me correctly, Zoot also covered Beatles "I'm Only Sleeping".
You all may be interested in Sunnyboys version of Beatles song Birthday❤
I thought my sister would pipe in and give her opinion, seeing as she's been a lifelong Macca fan, but she doesn't seem very interested in today's comparisons. 🤷♀
Beatles for me, even though I know The Zoot's version quite well. The footage of The Zoot was taken from an ABC-TV show called Hitscene, which was a pop show for kids/teens before Countdown. Not the greatest pop music presentation, but like GTK and Happening, Hit scene was all we had.
Cheers,
Hayley
Easybeats for Who Did It Better?
The Easybeats vs. Divinyls - I'll Make You Happy (Audio + Video merge 2024)
Jimmy Barnes & INXS - Good Times (Official Video) (FHD Upscale Remaster) - 1986 *(Easybeats cover)*
_Please use this particular title. It has great picture and sound quality. Much better than Vevo or anything else. When using the Easybeats' version, please only use the official audio. Beat-club trims out the pre-chorus and will block you anyway._
The Saints - Music Goes Round My Head (1989) *nzoz1989* (Easybeats cover. Use Easybeats audio)
ZOOT for me
Haha hard rock Eleanor Rigby, cool🎸🤘
Obviously The Beatles own this song, but The Zoot have an interesting catalogue if you're interested in Sabbath light, beat music, 60's teen pop and Rick Springfield's early guitar efforts. A much harder band for you to react to is Billy Thorpe And The Aztecs and their live performance of 'Mama' on GTK.
Doug Parkinson cover of Dear Prudence is a great cover worth a listen
As is the Banshees' version.
We did the Banshees version
I love Doug Parkinson's version. RIP Doug 🕊
Beatles lead the way - zoot follow.
That’s hard to split. I prefer Zoot’s style of music but it’s a Beatles classic…… Zoot just.
Overwhelming colorfast did a ripping version of "She Said, She Said". Would love to hear your take!
Zoot were better than I expected but not by much. A clear winner, I think.
Please try McCartney’s reworking of this on Give My Regards to Broad Street ❤️
I think Zoot's version was made around the time Joe Cocker beefed up 'With a Little Help From My Friends' into a much heavier version. I might be wrong on the timeline there but that's the feeling I get. Zoot's version was good but the original is the iconic all time classic version . That's Rick Springfield in the background I believe. He had some success in the 'states' a few years later.
Mr. Springthorpe's catalog pre-Working Class Dog / "Jessie's Girl", Is VERY solid (and frequently, INFECTIOUS.....)
One comparison you should do is The Beatles vs John Farnham, Help. If you haven't already. Or The Beatles vs 801 live, Tomorrow Never Knows , if you are adventurous.
We did Help. We will add the other suggestion. Thanks
Suggestion: Pink Floyd's classic Time or Jah Wobble's recent version of Time with Jon Klein.
👍
I'm a huge Beatles nut and have much of their post-Fab stuff
On the soundtrack to the woeful Paul McCartrney film "Give My Regards to Broad Street" is ""Eleanor's Dream" an extension of "Eleanor Rigby" making the whole thing over 9mins long. It's quite good. The music is better than the film.
In the film is Ringo Starr and his wife Barbara Bach (the two met on the set of Starr's comedy "Caveman")
The film also stars Aussie Bryan Brown and there's a snippet of him singing "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah"
Brown's probably known to North Americans for "Cocktail" and/or "FX".
Rock Springfield on guitar 🎸.... Beeb Birtles, later of Little River Band, on bass
Rick
Zoot
With their version of Tomorrow Never Knows , The Chameleons seriously challenged The Beatles original. This one has a nice guitar 🎸 but Beatles prevail easily overall. ✌️
Zoot were an early Australian band 60. Rick springfield was part of this group.....
Have a listen to Dear Prudence, another Beatles song, done by Australian singer Doug Parkison with his band In Focus. Absolute banger. Another good comparison video for you to do.
Can The Beatles be beaten?
Anyone else thinking Marty Monster?!
lol.. I wish I wasn't, but i am... The roo beating up Marty Monster was great.
@@OnceWasRStrathfield nearly strangulated his head off..🥵
@@gunlean7738 The size of that roo!! The professional roo guy doesn't seem to know what to do!
Zoot were legends here in Australia. Their catch phrase for a while was "Think Pink - Think Zoot". Never really got the recognition they deserved. Other Beatles comparisons worth trying are Paperback Writer (Sweet did a version) and Nowhere Man (Sherbet did a cover as well). Doug Parkinson covered Dear Prudence which is also a fantastic version. Australian Bands mostly did arrangement changes with Beatles covers. One last one from memory - The Overlanders charted very well in Australia with a cover of Michelle.
Doug Parkinson cover of Dear Prudence is great
Another one was Come together by Geisha Detail, just an album track but I played it a lot in the mid 80's. Good band that never quite made it , singer Chris Doheny has a great voice. So many great bands slipped through the cracks through poor management.
Zoot destroyed it 😅
Great try Zoot. But it's Mozart and Salieri.
Obscure , but I get it 😅 ✅
👍🏴
Sorry.... Zoot for me Guys. I love the Beatles but here ... give me a rock version ever time ... Oh have a squizz at the Metallica tribute to Elton John. For me it's a ripper!
Compare the Beatle's "I Want to Hold Your Hands" to Lakeside's version. Also try Billy Paul's "Me and Mrs. Jones" to the cover by the Dramatics.
You should check out Big Country's version - it's fantastic
Faust and of course. Original is best.
What's to say about this? The Zoot version lacks a good arrangement. I wonder how Dream Theater or any prog metal band would approach it. Better I think.
Lol. A keyboard warrior telling musicians who achieved international success how to arrange a song.
Not mi fave Beatles track.
