- In this video we're comparing Archie Bell & The Drells and New York Dolls, and their renditions of (There's Gonna Be A) Showdown. We only know one Archie Bell song (Tighten Up), and we've only begun to learn who New York Dolls are. We figure this will be two different styles, for sure, so we're excited to experience this. Please let us know who you think did it better. Enjoy!

That's an easy one...Archie Bell and the Drells all day!
I always have to smile at the way Johnny Thunders can squeeze his one (great) guitar lick into almost any song.
For me it's a win for Archie Bell and The Drells, but The New York Dolls did a good job. Archie Bell and The Drells had a lot of hits, tracks which I recommend by them are:
"Strategy",
"Don't Let Love Get You Down",
"Here I Go Again",
"Everybody Have a Good Time",
"Soul City Walk",
"I've Been Missing You",
"Wrap It Up",
"Right Here is Where I Want to Be",
"I Can't Stop Dancing",
"Girl You're Too Young",
"Do The Choo Choo",
"Love Will Rain on You",
"Ain't Nothing For a Man in Love",
"What's on a Woman's Mind".
You have to check out the Rance Allen version - my favourite version of this song. However, the Archie Bell track was my first introduction to this song as a teenager and always loved it.
Archie Bell & The Drells for vocals, definitely, but I was digging the guitar work in the NY Dolls version. Thought that spiced things up a bit.
Archie Bell and the Drells for me. I would prefer dysentery to The NY Dolls version.
🙄
🤣
👍🏴
Again, thanx for using my recommendation! Y'know, Archie Bell did have better 45s than "tighten up" (including this!)- don't know why that was his only hit...
The dolls version is the best for me. No way are the dolls just rolling stones copycats. I recommend the superb You cant put your arms around a memory/ lonely planet boy...the tribute to Johnny Thunders which shows just what they could do🙂
No question in my mind it’s the New York Dolls by a street , Archie n his mates was ok , it’s of it’s time - it’s a pity there wasn’t an available video for this one as the Dolls were not only a great sounding proto punk band but they were also an exquisitely visual band , I really don’t get why you think there’s a resemblance in any way to The Stones 🤷♂️.. they would’ve taken that as bit of an insult at the time , but hey everyone’s got their own view . This is a fantastic cover , so much so that it puts the original back in its box imho ✊
👍🏴
Kia Ora hello NEW YORK DOLL'S every day
Hi heath hope you're good, can you remember a new Zealander called Jonny thunder, he was a heavyweight prizefighter?🏴✌️
@@JamesDickson-vs5of yes that's a name i haven't heard for ever almost

No competition Archie bell’s original beats the other one hands down
I much prefer Archie Bell and the Drells. Their version has much more soul.
Hi Cynthia and Chris: The Drells' version reminded me of The Commodores' Night-shift and it also had elements of Tighten Up. The Dolls' version is good and has its place for the year it was done. To me, they are a bunch of goons but that's not why I pick The Drells version.
Yep ! Okay , Like the Original ! But thought The New York Dolls might have given it a bit more
Chelp !!! Sounded a bit more like Joey Ramone ! Than Joey Ramone !
Im going for "Archie Bell and the Drill Bits "
Might have suggested the " Dickies " before but their version of "Eve of Destruction "
is a peach ! Cheers
The New York Dolls ! With Johnny Thunders ⛈️ Get My Vote 🗳 & certainly The Sex Pistols were listening 😆 🤣
Without the Dolls the Pistols would NOT exist!
@@l.salisbury1253 plus Hawkwind and the Stooges.
I've always loved The Dolls cover of this, but it doesn't cut Archie and The Drells.
I have always been a Dolls fan and love their sloppy punk version.
But the REAL comparison with an Archie Bell and The Drells song is what you mentioned "Tighten Up" Their original version or The Yellow Magic Orchestra. Ponder that!!!
Thank you so much! That is most interesting.
Definately The Dolls. The Original is great but...
Kia Ora hello brother
The original is great but...
THE NEW YORK DOLLS
