  • Watch a comparison of an iconic Beatles song then the cover by Zoot, a band Id never heard of but really enjoyed. It looks like Zoot was probably a contemporary of the Beatles.

Daryl Cotton vocals, Beeb Birtles bass and backing vocals, Rick Brewer drums and Rick Springfield guitar and backing vocals. Rick was saying he was partly inspired by Jimi Hendrix and the way he made existing songs his own. Makes sense. 🤩

Zoot played from about '66-70. Started out as a poppy, bubblegum type band then when Zepp & Sabbath started making inroads, they morphed into a harder edged rock band!
Check out original tunes of theirs from that era like 'The Freak' etc.

Playing bass is Beeb Birtles who later played in the Little River Band.

I always loved Beeb's Voice. Here is a song when Beeb was in Mississippi (with Graeham Goble's singing lead vocals) which basically morphed into LRB.. ua-cam.com/video/NnOSTaJMGDQ/v-deo.html

Zoot was really popular in Australia for a time. And their cover of Eleanor Rigby went to No 1 in the charts in Australia. Another successful Beatles cover was Dear Prudence by Doug Parkinson.

I wonder if you realised that wasn't the Beatles original version of Eleanor Rigby? It was from the Giles Martin produced reworking of multiple Beatles songs done as a continuous medley for a Cirque Du Soleil entertainment called Love. That's why it had that odd orchestral ending that then faded out in an unresolved sort of way. There was an earlier clue it was a different take from the original even in just the vocal - if you noticed, Paul sang "Writing the words TO a sermon" instead of "OF a sermon" and almost trips himself up, but keeps going.
I quite liked the little bit of harmony singing at the end of Zoot's cover. Not perfect in the way Beatles stuff is almost always perfect, but a nice idea and quite well done. It also occurred to me they'd borrowed that repeated bass riff from Helter Skelter. Anyone else notice it? Am I right?
Thanks for the opportunity to hear two alternative versions back to back of this great classic! :-)

I really enjoy your reactions!! Keep it going! Thank you again for reacting to my request of wicked games!
Another song to react to is Van Morrison's Sweet Thing vs Hozier cover Sweet Thing from the Naked Noise Session.

If a band makes a song uniquely theirs, then they have REALLY achieved something.
Surely this is basic to understand this, all musicians of any note would.
To dismiss this musical achievement so readily after just admitting they have created practically a new song says all I need to know. This is no reaction of any note.
It's typical American arrogance because he personally hasn't heard of Zoot?
It's about the musicianship not the hierarchy. So then we get a throwaway non curious statement about Rick Springfield it's pretty lax.
Listen mate, it's not about your personal recollections of wearing out the Beatles records. Or it shouldn't be.
What's new about that? Everyone did that.
To do justice to this piece of audacious, tight and original musicianship I thought there would be some substantive discussion about music and dynamism with this... but nothing!
PS 1970. Get some curiosity FGS. Maybe you're having a bad day, but I mean.... really?

@@Anothercoverlover62 Bob Daisley is the Australian bass player who played on Ozzy Osborne's first two solo albums. He also wrote some of the songs. He has played with, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Gary Moore, Chicken Shack and Uriah Heep, among others. They don't come much better. I'm merely winding you up, about not knowing who he is. Ozzy is probably still figuring that out too lol.
