    Here's a fun fact. I had a 1971 ORANGE half stack. Yes, all original. And matching head and cab... both mint and bought here in the states as an import. And I opened the cabinet once, expecting the Celestions or Faynes... (sp) and to my surprise, eminence square backs!!! Turns out to save money, they were shipped empty, unless someone specified their speaker choice, and loaded with speakers here in the states... and that's what they wound up being!

    Picked up an old beat-to-shit SVT810 off the street the other day and it was chock full of these old square-back Eminences, all eight speakers in perfect condition. Sounds thunderous and absolutely gorgeous.

    These are in my 1980 Peavey Classic VT. Not sure what is stamped on them but they are the stock Peavey speakers of the era. Great warmth when playing clean. Pretty good for late 70's metal, which is great for me. The really like my Proco Rat and that is most important element for me. Rat is king.

      Back in the 70s and 80s buying speakers wasn't easy. No shops carried new speakers. so these were sold in RadioShack so they were accessible. I never even heard of celestion until I bought an amp that had one in it. A whole different world in the Stone Age.

    In 1980 at CBGB's I blew up my front line amp on the opening chord. Had to finish the show with my backup, a Peavey Classic 50 with a pair of the square backs in it. The combination of the speakers pushed to 11 and using the series input on the amp caused a reviewer to refer to my tone as "distorted." (Imagine that, "distorted" guitar at CB's in 1980! The Holy Grail.) Chastened, I took out the baffle, with the speakers (they're still up in the barn, on the baffle and after this I'm going to go see if they still work), put the combo amp on a table saw and cut the head off. Put a bottom board on the top, built a TL806 enclosure for an EVM 12L (Series II) and played through that. The combination of a head that can get really dirty and a speaker that can't, right up to jet engine volume, worked well. And still does.

    Great video. Never cared for the square backs though, especially when pushed...they get fuzzy to my ears as oppossed to the grind of a celestion. Kinda like a fuzz pedal vs overdrive. They also are VERY hit or miss on the used market. I went through 9 of them once to restore a 70s ampeg. They sounded fine till you turned up the bass..then flab city from being used and abused.

      I would consider a 2X12, and a separate 1X12. Very versatile. Use both cabs stacked if you want big sound, or just the 1X12 when practicing or in a small venue.
      Some players load a 4X12 with only 3 speakers and reserve the empty spot as a "bass port". Sounds good, but is heavy with those massive magnets in play.

    Yeah, according to their Website and an essay written by Hartley Peavey himself, Peavey started in the 1970's, just when Celestion started making speakers, a business relationship with Celestion.
    Those old speakers may say "Peavey" on the back, but sure are made by Celestion.

    Spend the money and get Celestions. I just do not like these speakers at any price. I have a 40 solid state amp with very light weight speakers and they are so sensitive and have so much resolution because of that, and so I can get amazing detail, and I can make them sound great, unlike the sound on this video, which is mostly mud, but more like mud plus bad resonance. These speakers rub me the wrong way badly. I hate the Eminence speaker.

      Everything on this channel is improvised, Louis, basically done in real time. That’s how I speak IRL, I’m afraid, so that’s what you’ll get. If you prefer something more slick, there are tonnes of well rehearsed infomercials out there.

    • @louistorres
      @louistorres 5 років тому

      @@JohanSegeborn my channel is the same. Nothing rehearsed and it's me throwing info at everyone right from the cuff. Trust that I get it, I'm certain when you speak your own native language, you don't do the same. Regardless of language, pausing instead of saying Eeeehhh and uuuuhhhh is just a smoother way of speaking. Try it! Watch your videos, you'll see how distracting it is. Weren't you the one who added, "leave a feedback, good and bad," on your ABOUT section? A good host becomes a BETTER host when they proactively try to do betterwith each new video. Don't change the style, just pause instead of saying, "uuummmm," because in a ten minute video, you'll do it roughly 40 times.
