Johan Segeborn I couldn't disagree more. The EVM was awful on its own and killed everything it was paired with. The JBL and Jensen both surprised me but possibly too 'exciting' paired up. So JBL plus Greenback it is.
Nicely done Johan! Never heard the JBL D120F before but it sure did catch my ear with it's unique sound. I chose the JBL D120F & Celestion Greenback as my favourite combination. I feel these two speakers compliment each other very nicely. They do not compete with each other nor is one overbearing.
ChrisBuck66JTM45 Greenback with anything really. Great base tone and the rest is just flavor. Some of the rattier cobinations including the Jensen and EV sound pretty interesting too as an effect... but not as a main tone imho.
Wow, information overload!!! The JBL was a nice surprise and I think it fitted well with both the Vintage 30 and the G12H. I'm partial to Celestions so I sure liked the V30/G12H combination as well. Very thorough and useful test! Impressive! Thanks!
You make the best reviews! To my ears my fav would be JBL+Celestion V30. JBL+EV is a very interesting combo due to their different sounds. Jensens sounded fine for almost every combo. Cheers!
You are the best one in these thing, man. Unfortunately, here in brazil, we don't have this tecnology, a marshall coasts more less five or six salary. Keep doing this. Great !
That was very interesting, I thought that combinations where a bassier speaker and a brighter speaker were together were the best. A highlight to me was the Jensen with the Greenback and the Jensen with the V30. I also really liked the Greenback with the V30, although that was maybe more muddy that I would like. Great video Johan! P.S. I also learned that what really brings your songs to life are the pads, very interesting!
You’ve gotta be the guitar speaker man of UA-cam by now lol. Question for you by the way since you have so much experience in installing and changing speakers a lot lol. What’s the best method for properly installing speakers? By that I mean you have so many people who have a way of doing it, some over tighten and warp a basket, some don’t tighten enough and so on. So how do you mount your speakers, how tight, how many turns? So basically what’s your process? I trust you would know since you’ve swapped speakers so much, excellent guitar player and great wealth of knowledge. Maybe a how to install speakers tutorial video in the future might be a cool idea 💡😉 Thank you and hope this isn’t to long and annoying. Btw enjoy your videos and rock on 🤘
Thanks Johan for including solo parts as well. You're a listening expert at this but for some there's just far too many different sounds going on in a mix to clearly hear the subtleties of the small differences between specific guitars, amps or speakers. Having each featured individually really helps. Thanks for all you do!
If you can't hear the subtleties of the guitar in the mix, then it means the speakers translate poorly to the mix, which is more important than how the speakers sound alone
One speaker stands above the others-Jensen P12N. It sounded great in any combination. It even made the Vintage 30 sound better. Super impressed. The JBL came in 2nd for me and sounded great.
Another great vid. Man you don't play around when your do comparisons .No stone unturned. The Best! Only problem is when I watch your vids it cost me money. lol Got to get those JBL'S Thanks
Det här är content haha! Tur att det var ett såpass bra riff att man orkade lyssna igenom hela ;) Favoriten var nog JBL D120F + Celestion Vintage30! Men Jensen P12N var otippat bra - tack för grymt arbete!
i bet it would sound amazing a 4 12 cab filled with water but where it didn't interfere with the speaker. u work realky hard at this man. i appreciate it so much.
Great video! I have 2 favorite combinations based on the video: - Electrovoice EVM12L & Celestion G12H30 55Hz Greenback - Jensen P12N & Celestion Vintage 30
Yes it's true! Van Halen brown sound is JBL and Greenbacks. So huge and massive with a distinct presence. With your video you've really done a great service to all the Van Halen fans. Again your videos are amazing! Thank you
I didn't expect this but JBL + JENSEN is absolute magic. Two of the last speakers I'd ever had an idea to pair. JBL alone is really really good also. Also Greenback + v30 rocks but that wasnt a surprise. :) After watching this video I really need to buy a couple of those JBLs...
This was a great way to hear these speakers in combinations, I like the JBL and the Jensen for sure, I'm running the Greenback and the vintage 30 and I'm happy in the ( unending pursuit of tone chasing). Thanks brother!
Doing God's work here Johan! I've been asking around forums to see if anyone's paired a Greenback with a V30 (I've got the Eminence equivalent of the GB), and THIS VIDEO is the answer I've been searching for! Thank you!
Another Great Scintific Video !! The JBL's flat response makes it play well with others. Because of this video, the EVM with the Greenback is my next combo. I've used 4X12's loaded with two EVM & two Vintage 30's , those are fantastic.
Staying with V30 (got grit), JBL (good all round cleans) and the Greenback great as always ...was impressed with the Jensen!..but hands down winner is v30...its a WoW V30 with 1 JBL/ 2 Jensen/ 3 Greenback -Thanks for all the hardwork
9:06 speakers on their own This is such a great comparison and it's full of surprises! Only thing I wish for now is the same exact methodology but with close-to-breakup clean sounds
Surprised. 3:14 the V30+JBL was my favorite combination. Knock me over with a feather. Then for the "All Combos w Drums/Bass/Pads" at 6:02 I liked the V30+Electrovoice which though I felt was quite weak before, cut nicely through the mix. I would have lost any bet I'd have considered placing today....thanks Johan.
I love my cab I built with a GB and v30 but I've already started building the new cab for the jbl/Jensen combo. Isn't it a great time to love guitar gear!!!!!
I think i like the ElectroVoice better. Coupled with The Jensen or The Greenback. They complete themself really well considering the dark sound of the ElectroVoice and the very bright sound of the Jensen or Greenback. Congratulation for this awesome video ! Once again ! ;)
Very very difficult to choose a favourite. Your recording technique generally makes things sound very good. If I have to pick, I liked the JBL and the Jensen together. Actually they were my favourite individually also. Anything with that V30 in cuts straight through the mix.
I've always loved the mix of Guitar speakers myself!!! I've only had 3 - 412 cabs with 4 matching speakers. The first was a huge heavy as Funk Carvin 412 Straight Cabinet loaded with 4 G12K - 85's sounded incredible with a 50 watt 2 - EL34 Superbass Cranked!!!! The Peavey somewhere in the 80's Butcher Cabinet with 4 - G12K- 85's those are best all around speakers I think I've ever heard they even sound incredible with a Bass guitar blasting through them!!! The next was my Vintage Modern Marshall 425A cab. It sounded great but I couldn't stand the KT66's so I traded the halfstack for a early 90's Marshall SL-X halfstack. Great tones Badass rock and roll machine. Anymore I like to mix 2 Hellatone 60's and 2 G12M - 25 watt Greenbacks or Scumback M75- 65 watt Greenback Clone that sounds better than the real thing in my opinion!!! Great tone!!!! I also mix 2 Hellatone 60's and 2 G12T-75's or 2 G12K-85's with the Hellatone's. It gives the cabinet a bottom end that is like a gorgeous Ass it just doesn't Stop till the Bottom falls OUT!!!🤣🤣🤣😉😎🇬🇧🔊🤘🇬🇧🤘🔊 Excellent Video demo as always bud!!!
I watched one of your other comparison videos and asked about the JBL & Greenback - like it! Not to be cliche, but the Greenback and V30 sounded good too. Thanks Johan
I tried and was shocked how good a greenback type speaker paired with an American alnico plug type speaker having tried both the Weber alnico sig(with ribs) and an Eminence Legend 1228K.I suspect the 12a125 or 12a125-a from Weber would suffice as well(all have a scooped sound). The key was the narrow bandwidth ceramic pushing the lows and mids with the American alnico pushing and compressing on the deep lows and treble frequencies. It makes for a very tone-dynamic sound that is very pleasing.(the lows and mids have modest "woody" compression with the alnico deep lows and treble highs compressing more to avoid spikiness) You get a great compression to punch ratio at the right frequencies. Now this arrangement is not for stadium volumes but for ordinary bars and halls and such ,it's great RnR sound. It also allows me to turn my AC30cc master volume from 2 to a more respectable 4 in a band situation(my other cab has a Celestion Blue and Eminence redwhite and blues,a very loud combo)This matters because the AC30cc doesn't sound as good turned way down.
Evm and Jbl combo was my favorite, hated the jensen in all cases lol The one thing that is difficult in this comparison, is how "forward" the speaker sounds in person, or not. The evm and the V30 have always seemed very "forward" and unforgiving, meaning you hear and feel every bad note, pick strike etc. Awesome demo Johan!!
+Scott Hamilton Thanks, I think all speakers but the Jensen is rather uncompressed and unforgiving. The G12M greenback is more compressed than the G12H I used here. Cheers
if you ever get a chance to mix a g12m25 with g12-65 in your 2104 combo give it a go. I have done this recently with great results. I'm now a big fan of mixing speakers. loved most of the speakers here with the JBL. fantastic demo Johan .Also thanks for the Bassman, JTM 45 demo.
JBL+Jensen is a fantastic combo. Would be great in a twin or a 2x12 cab. Probably a JBL+Jensen Ceramic would be even better. You get the creamy smooth overdrive from the alnico JBL and the punchiness from the Ceramic. Alnico+ceramic=best combo. None of the speakers are dogs but the EVM did not shine here. Perhaps it needs more power to get the goods. Celestions sound great especially the greenback. The Jensen paired well with all speakers.
i like the jbl and the greenback I use the greenback and a g12h 30 watt. hay thanks for the vids on the bassbreakers I BOUGHT. custom 15watt with a greenback in it.... spunds great
I like the D120F and Greenback. I wish JBL did heritage stuff like Celestion. Or maybe if enough people demand it, someone like Eminence or Warehouse will do a reasonable approximation of the D120F.
Thank you Johan. For me I would say Johnson and v30 sound the best for rock And electrovoice&jbl have an interesting sound, they fit together..for more popish sound.
In this video you can hear how different situations shift your preference! I liked EVM12L + Vintage 30 in standalone clip, but it gets less apparent in the mix, especially with pads. In the mix I preferred JBL + Vintage 30 and along with pads JBL + V30, Jensen + V30 or JBL + Jensen. The harshness you hear in standalone is what cuts through in a mix. Cheers!
awsome video! can you please do another one with more speakers if you ever feel you have the time? maybe with some more celestion stuff! thanks! this made my day as Ive been wanting to get a speaker for my 2x12! right now im running an orange 2x12 with 2 voice of the world speakers made by orange! I guess there supposed to be kind of vintage 30 sounding with a vintage high end, and a tight bass response! can I mail you my Orange voice of the world speaker if its not to expensive to do in a part 2?
i just put a seventy 80 (which i hated) with a 12m-70 (which i wasnt fond of) in an open back cab together..and i love how it sounds.. the eternal search for tone has no boundaries or right answers. ..muahaha..
Most of my cabs have Vintage 30's, but I've always loved Greenbacks and usually the Greenback 4x12 cabs are my go to. Also have a 4x12 with 2 V 30's and 2 Greenbacks which really as a distinct and awesome sound to it. I did like the JBL with Jensen as well, like Sam did.
I like a few combinations. personally, I have a greenback and a vintage 30 in the top hat cab. I have a scumback m70 in a single mesa openback cab, and standard g12-75s in my marshall 1960A cab.
@@JohanSegeborn FWIIW I've had great success with pairing wide bandwith/scooped "American" *alnico* speakers with narrow bandwidth/warmish ceramic speakers (FE Greenback)..worth trying. Also, thx for all the demos.
Hi Johan. Was the picture of a P12N used in this clip, a photo of the speaker actually used in this clip/a recent production model? The current production ones look quite different ... just wondering if they've changed since 201X (whichever year model you used), or if the photo in the clip is of a more vintage P12N (as I suspect)? Thanks! Cheers, K
Man, this is hands down the best guitar speaker comparison on the internet!
I love how Johan's intros are done wherever. This one in a car while it's raining.
+Alastair Tilley hahaha, thanks man, yeah I wish the day had more than 24 hours :-)
By the way, thanks to this, I can convince the wife that I need to swap out the standard speakers in my cab! I owe you a few beers!
Surprisingly the Greenback and the D120F was my favorite. Great work!
absolutely most useful guitar speaker videos on YT.
thank you very very much.
živeo!!
to my ears, wherever in combination is EVM12L it sounds good, with greenbacks or Jensens are my favorites.
+Goran Marinic Thanks Goran, I'm really glad to hear that!
Johan Segeborn I couldn't disagree more. The EVM was awful on its own and killed everything it was paired with. The JBL and Jensen both surprised me but possibly too 'exciting' paired up. So JBL plus Greenback it is.
1barnsie completely agree except that for me the jbl + Jensen combo won, followed by your choice!
+1 for the JBL + Greenback
Nicely done Johan! Never heard the JBL D120F before but it sure did catch my ear with it's unique sound. I chose the JBL D120F & Celestion Greenback as my favourite combination. I feel these two speakers compliment each other very nicely. They do not compete with each other nor is one overbearing.
that was my opinion too. Just saw this video
:O Hypnotic!! Greenback combines very well with the most.
Greenback and surprisingly the JBL worked best for my ears. Another great comparison video Johan cheers !
+ChrisBuck66JTM45 Thanks Chris, Cheers!
Agree, or JBL with the Black Back close second.
ChrisBuck66JTM45 Greenback with anything really. Great base tone and the rest is just flavor. Some of the rattier cobinations including the Jensen and EV sound pretty interesting too as an effect... but not as a main tone imho.
Johan Segeborn Now do the whole thing again with 2 of the same speakers haha.
The Greenback and the JBL really had a 3D separation to the combination....Now I want them in a 2x12 or better yet in pairs in a 4x12!
My favorite Green back with the Vintage 30. Awesome thanks for taking the time to demonstrate these combos.
Thanks!
Wow, information overload!!! The JBL was a nice surprise and I think it fitted well with both the Vintage 30 and the G12H. I'm partial to Celestions so I sure liked the V30/G12H combination as well. Very thorough and useful test! Impressive! Thanks!
+Blues Bengan Thanks Bengan, great to hear that!
^^ Exactly this. :))
I didn't even ask for it and here it is. Great job as always.
+Omar Belayachi Thanks Omar! Glad to hear it!
This is great. An awesome resource for the DIY amp modders/makers out there.
You make the best reviews!
To my ears my fav would be JBL+Celestion V30.
JBL+EV is a very interesting combo due to their different sounds.
Jensens sounded fine for almost every combo.
Cheers!
+Macaius MusicMaker Thanks, I'm really glad to hear that!
It seems like every combination sounds better with the JBL. The JBL/V30 combo sounds the best to my ear as well.
That's my preference too! And I really haven't liked new V30's before because of their mid scoop & over-extending (to my ears at least) treble
Yes, I liked the JBL with the Celestion Greenback. I would've been interesting if the Celestion were a G12M!
You are the best one in these thing, man. Unfortunately, here in brazil, we don't have this tecnology, a marshall coasts more less five or six salary. Keep doing this. Great !
That was very interesting, I thought that combinations where a bassier speaker and a brighter speaker were together were the best. +Roberto Cabrera Thanks Roberto! Yeah there are some really cool patches in Cubasis

A brilliant (and useful video). I preferred the Jensen + V30.
No, wait..... I preferred the V30 + Jensen.
+1👍 Jensen + V30 🤘🤘🤘

Great job of putting together this comparison video. Moves at a good pace and still gives the viewer lots of information.
Thanks!!
Rock On!

+Tone Fingerz Glad to hear it! :-)
Thanks Johan for the good time we all have watching your videos!
Regarding the speakers I'd probably go with V30+JBL, or maybe V30+Greenback.
+Magnus Hardt Thanks Magnus, glad to hear it :-) Yeah V30 really shines in mixes, rather than isolated.
Great video!
I have 2 favorite combinations based on the video:
- Electrovoice EVM12L & Celestion G12H30 55Hz Greenback
- Jensen P12N & Celestion Vintage 30
+Mike SG Thanks Mike!
Yes it's true! Van Halen brown sound is JBL and Greenbacks. So huge and massive with a distinct presence. With your video you've really done a great service to all the Van Halen fans. Again your videos are amazing! Thank you

Thanks for the video, man! I liked the V30 with the JBL.
jensen & greenback works for me, supernice to get that knowledge of combinationsmany tanx Johan.
Here we go EVM 12L and Greenback absolutely!! Thanks Johan :)
+Leif Ångqvist Thanks Leif! :-)
Jenson and greenback. A little bit of Britain and America mixed make a good alliance.
+jess d Cheers! ;-)
This was a great way to hear these speakers in combinations, I like the JBL and the Jensen for sure, I'm running the Greenback and the vintage 30 and I'm happy in the ( unending pursuit of tone chasing). Thanks brother!
amazing! we need a 4x12 version of this!
Doing God's work here Johan! I've been asking around forums to see if anyone's paired a Greenback with a V30 (I've got the Eminence equivalent of the GB), and THIS VIDEO is the answer I've been searching for! Thank you!
+Aimran479 Thanks my friend, glad the video is put to some good use!
Thank you so much for making these videos!
Great video, been waiting a long time to see something like this 👍
Thanks Matt! Glad to hear that
Another Great Scintific Video !!
+Gerry Loughran Thanks Gerry!
Excellent comparison! Thank you for this!!
+ziftortion Glad to hear it, Thanks!
So many combinations! Strangely, the Greenback and the Vintage 30 sounded quite good! Great vid!
+AscarinVin Thanks! :-)
Thanx for another breathtakingly awesome video!
+SchreihalsFX Thanks my friend!
9:06 speakers on their own
This is such a great comparison and it's full of surprises! Only thing I wish for now is the same exact methodology but with close-to-breakup clean sounds
Jensen + Greenback FTW ! 🤘
this is insaneeeeee. thank you for the work 👂
Very complete and useful. Must have taken some time to get all setup with video editing. Just really well done and helpful. Thanks.
+Rick McCargar Thanks Rick! Yeah any additional instrument that is added to the mix often shifts the balance quite dramatically
On your prior video, I didn't care for the electrovoice at all, today it surprised the hell out of me.
+Rick McCargar yeah it's very full sounding in the mix
EVM12L & Greenback for me! THANKS JOHAN!!
the jbl is nice! especially with the Jensen
+Sam Fosdick Thanks Sam! :-)
Sam Fosdick also my favourite combo
I love my cab I built with a GB and v30 but I've already started building the new cab for the jbl/Jensen combo. Isn't it a great time to love guitar gear!!!!!
Johan Segeborn she's getting her passport! so do you have an extra guitar I can play when we come over to visit?
Thats also my choise and what a surprise. Never thought about pairing those.
I think i like the ElectroVoice better. Coupled with The Jensen or The Greenback. They complete themself really well considering the dark sound of the ElectroVoice and the very bright sound of the Jensen or Greenback. Congratulation for this awesome video ! Once again ! ;)
THAT WAS INCREDIBLE!!!!!
Thanks Mark! :-)
The Jensen with the EV12 and the V30 were my favourites.
Hi, almost perfect! Very useful. Thanks, just wait for the clean sounds demo. Great job!
Keep on rockin' Mr. Segeborn! Thanks!
+Guitar Dev Thanks, you too! :-)
That Vintage 30 sounded quite rowdy all alone. :) Thanks Johan, this is great stuff!
+lm205 Thanks! :-)
Very very difficult to choose a favourite. Your recording technique generally makes things sound very good.
If I have to pick, I liked the JBL and the Jensen together. Actually they were my favourite individually also.
Anything with that V30 in cuts straight through the mix.
+preromanbritain Thanks, great to hear that!

a surprise to my ears, green back and Jensen.
if you ever get a chance to mix a g12m25 with g12-65 in your 2104 combo give it a go. I have done this recently with great results. I'm now a big fan of mixing speakers. loved most of the speakers here with the JBL. fantastic demo Johan .Also thanks for the Bassman, JTM 45 demo.
P12+greenback= awesome
+Ignavum Asinus Thanks :-)
I like the JBL/Celestion Greenback the best. Seem like their in harmony with each other.
+Dave Monty Yeah, that's a classic combination
JBL+Jensen is a fantastic combo. Would be great in a twin or a 2x12 cab. Probably a JBL+Jensen Ceramic would be even better. Greenback & Jensen for me
+Neil Scott Thanks Neil
Maaan killer video!
Johan, you are my hero dude!
+Erik Adams Thanks my friend!
mycket hjälpsamt, tack Johan!
i like the jbl and the greenback I use the greenback and a g12h 30 watt. hay thanks for the vids on the bassbreakers I BOUGHT. custom 15watt with a greenback in it.... spunds great
Great, now I have that riff in my head for the rest of the day! haha
+Mamo Hahaha, I'm so sorry about that ;-)
Very very useful and interesting test. Thank you!
Jensen and JBL sound the best to my taste. Thanks for the demo, Johan!
good job, very very interresting. For me the best combination is JBL + Jensen. But all Speaker are good.
I like the D120F and Greenback. I wish JBL did heritage stuff like Celestion. Or maybe if enough people demand it, someone like Eminence or Warehouse will do a reasonable approximation of the D120F.

For me I would say Johnson and v30 sound the best for rock
And electrovoice&jbl have an interesting sound, they fit together..for more popish sound.
A lot of combinations to take in, but one thing I can say for sure is the greenback improves every other speaker.
+SirVicconius Yeah its gels great with most speakers
In this video you can hear how different situations shift your preference! I liked EVM12L + Vintage 30 in standalone clip, but it gets less apparent in the mix, especially with pads. In the mix I preferred JBL + Vintage 30 and along with pads JBL + V30, Jensen + V30 or JBL + Jensen. The harshness you hear in standalone is what cuts through in a mix. Cheers!
+George Kollaros Thanks George, yeah just by adding another instrument often all bets are off! Cheers!
9:06 🙂direct room and close mic comparison of each
JBL + G12H = badass
+Andrew Shepherd Thanks Andrew! :-)
Johan; where's an Alnico Celestion? Those are in thousands of recordings from the Sixites..
awsome video! can you please do another one with more speakers if you ever feel you have the time? maybe with some more celestion stuff! thanks! this made my day as Ive been wanting to get a speaker for my 2x12! right now im running an orange 2x12 with 2 voice of the world speakers made by orange! I guess there supposed to be kind of vintage 30 sounding with a vintage high end, and a tight bass response! can I mail you my Orange voice of the world speaker if its not to expensive to do in a part 2?
you are the KING
i just put a seventy 80 (which i hated) with a 12m-70 (which i wasnt fond of) in an open back cab together..and i love how it sounds.. the eternal search for tone has no boundaries or right answers. ..muahaha..
JBL and Jensen did it for me - closely followed by Jensen and V30. I always preferred the Jensen sound to Celestions.
Thanks Elliot
man i know u put alot into this. thx
+Tone Fingerz Thanks!
JBL sounds great matched to a lot of the speakers
my combo choice over all is jbl d120f with greenback and secondly with the vintage 30. thirdly the greenback and vintage 30
wow, where to begin????? Excellent..........
Vintage 30 with the Jensen is the truth. Just sounds really good to me
Hey Thanx! Valuable info there Johan.
I liked the combo of the JBL and the Jensen best and the Greenback with the Vintage 30 was a close 2nd.
The combination I liked most were Jbl and Jensen . But to my ears the Jensen sounded good with al the speakers
+Rikard Lundgren Thanks Rikard!
+Jimmy D. Hi Jimmy, V30 and G12T-75 complements eachother really well
fantastic content, thank you!
Glad to hear that, thanks!
I was really expecting to like the greenback and V30 best but I think the EVM+Greenback is a really nice mix
Thats a lot of screwing and un screwing screws
+Anus Repair Man Hahaha! Yeah and I did it manually! :-/
I did not know that there was a way to do it automatically! ;-)
...to rise above normie sonics is surely worthy
@@JohanSegeborn FWIIW I've had great success with pairing wide bandwith/scooped "American" *alnico* speakers with narrow bandwidth/warmish ceramic speakers (FE Greenback)..worth trying. Also, thx for all the demos.
@@JohanSegeborn this video is so damn helpful!! thank you!!!
Any combination between the Electrovoice, Jensen & both Celestions were my preferences. The JBL + any other speaker added too much high-end to me.
Hi Johan. Was the picture of a P12N used in this clip, a photo of the speaker actually used in this clip/a recent production model? The current production ones look quite different ... just wondering if they've changed since 201X (whichever year model you used), or if the photo in the clip is of a more vintage P12N (as I suspect)? Thanks! Cheers, K
