I actually think the stock speaker sounded considerably better in all examples. The amp is definitely voiced to compliment the 70/80! Cool!

I swapped out the speaker in my Stage Right 15W Amp. I took out the Celestron and replaced it with a Yamaha JA-3101 Speaker I removed from a 1980s Harmon Organ. Sounds really good, better than I expected! They are vastly different speaker builds and material.

Love this amp. I was able to sell my stock speaker for $50 and pick up a Celestion G12 Vintage 30 UK made(16 ohm) for only $50. The amp roars like a sweet Marshall now. Hard to beat for $250 all in!

I like to used speakers from old SS amps. You can find celestion speakers in old crates and the like on the cheap. But I wouldn’t spend money on a new expensive speaker for sure and the 70/80 isn’t bad any who.

i liked the stock speaker the best. but it's a good example to show that most of your tone comes from the speaker, before anything else, and then the amp, in itself, then the pickups. the rest you can probably more or less ignore - as long as you've got electronics good enough, and good sustain - bridge, nut. the cable and the pickup height are both more important than these latter things, tone wise, i can't repeat it enough.

I don't think they jacked the price because of one review. There have been many favorable reviews of this amp. Thomann sells the same amp with the Harley Benton brand rather than Stage Right. Prices go up, it's called inflation. This amp was on sale recently for $219. US. $411 CAD. For your Canadian viewers with a small discount it was 212US + taxes + shipping= $412.CAD

Monoprice sold out . . . lots of free shipping returns for amps damaged by UPS. The price increase is more a supply/demand thing. The cabinet is low grade particle board and any bad bumps in transit will rip the dry wall screws out, especially with the heavy speaker. After two returns I just totally repaired the wrecked cabinet. Then one of the pre-amp tubes blew and a tech fixed everything . . . the EL84's were totally out of balance. So, with new tubes (Monoprice paid for new power tubes) and repairs, I got $300 plus labor into this.

    • @leonarddaneman810
      @leonarddaneman810 2 роки тому

The 70-80 has great clean sound. I had to return the unit, damaged in shipping, and the replacement had the A-Type which didn't seem as 'magical' sounding, but is okay. The A-Type is rated 50 watts comparted to the 7-80's 80 watts, and measured to a bass frequency response down to 75hz vs 80hz for the 70-80.
      I tried a $200 Eminence, but the little amp's cheap board couldn't handle the massive magnet . . .
. . . the stock Celestion's sound well matched to the Monoprice Stage Right.

  • @jayceburns8246

The amp is sweet stock. But I agree with Darrell that overall it has a pretty scooped sound and with the gain turned up tends to get a bit fizzy. i found his original video about the amp after I had already bought mine. He changed the tubes in his before me and I agreed that it didn't sound like much of a difference on that video, but still went on to try for myself with some Tungsol pres and Groove Tube power tubes. It made a pretty big difference - taking away any hint of fizziness and made the sound fuller. I then realized that it still had a bit of the scooped sound and decided to try another speaker. I ordered a Hellatone 25 ceramic and of course one day prior to receiving it I see this video posted. Again the difference doesn't come across as being that great here, but when I put the Hellatone in I got a helluva tone coming out! It is now super fat sounding and no scooped sound and absolutely no shrill treble. I will test it out at my gig on Friday! Looking forward to cranking this bad boy up some! With about a total of $450 (amp + tubes + speaker) this is now a SICK AZZ amp!

It's so easy to replace a speaker in a combo amp or speaker cabinet that even I did it (a month or so ago), in a Jet City Amplification 12S+ ( super inexpensive 1x12). Adding an Eminence Screamin' Eagle was super simple, and took it from "alright" to "amazing" IMO.

The exception is the Laney VC 30 amp combo w/1-12" 70/80 speaker !

Thanks for the video. At one point you mention that you could get pretty good sound out of the seventy 80 with EQ. I wish you had said what EQ you were using. The one thing I find unhelpful about speaker, is that they show all of the EQ at noon. That means you never hear the speakers as good as they can be EQ'd. You only hear the speaker that sounds best without playing with the EQ.

    • @jaysorensenIBEW
      @jaysorensenIBEW Рік тому

There it is! You're on to something. I thought a bunch about this, and your words are a good conclusion. I'm thinking, now, that all three drivers should be EQed to sound as close to each other as possible, and still sound clean/satisfying. Then you can run all three and see which sounds best. You'd also learn a lot by taking note of how extreme your EQing had to go to pull this off.
On another note, I used Sony MDR-7508 monitor earphones, and then my main listening speakers, which are decent. The differences were night and day. Absolutely gotta use some sort of decent headphones to judge these comparisons. Cheers

I was expecting to find out I really wanted to change my speaker, but though I really like the alnico speaker's tone, I didn't necessarily prefer it, particularly knowing now much eq-ing I can do on the amp. I don't care if the knob is at 3 o'clock or dimed out, as long as I'm getting the sound I want. Think I'm pretty content with the stock speaker now. Will likely swap out a tube to get a bit more clean headroom, and considering replacing reverb for a 3 spring, but grateful to hear these differences without having to buy the speaker to do so.

  • @moreorlesslikeso

As there always tend to be some people who are a bit quick as to their actions, I think one should actually mention that you better disconnect the amp's power plug from the mains before you swap the speaker and/or do anything to the tubes... You never know what kind of mishap might occur during the operation.

Changing speakers is one of the biggest impacts impacts you can have on your tone but you really need to do your home work.
There are so many different types you can mix different speakers to get the best of both if you have a two speaker set up and speakers also change as they break in. Not enough players pay attention to their speakers

The monoprice 5 is better as far as 5W tube amps, nice clean fenderish tone that breaks up nicely when pushed, great with pedals. My bugera 5 was the first version, not the infinium. I'd sell my marshall dsc40 before I'd think of selling the mono 15. I love the marshall but it's too much for my needs and so damn heavy.

Overall I liked the stock speaker the best. It is neutral allowing you to EQ most different sounds. The AlNiCo Speaker was very mid and high heavy ... not sure, if I would spend that much money for it. The third speaker I did not like at all. It sounded muddy - like some frequency ranges were seriously dampened. Very strange! Not sure, if you can EQ that out to get back a neutral sounding amp.

If Fender would up grade there amps like monoprice did they would be so much better , the Fender blues Jr. plastic input jack all ways breaks and many mods are needed to make that amp gig worthy because it has so many flaws !

Not worth the bucks for hardly any differences - unless somebody is a gear head and just can't stop buying MORE STUFF! (As pronounced by George Carlin)

Cannabiss Rex all day long for my tastes followed by the stock speaker and the alnico last.

Great video. And there is a question that I always wanted to make, and it is what do you do with all that stuff (pick ups, speakers, etc.) that you don't use?

I actually liked the Stock and the WGS the best. The CR is didnt like, which is weird id been told by a few people that the CR sounded great in this amp. Right now I just have a stock MP15, but i have a Jensen C12K im gonna put in the amp this weekend. Its a speaker ive had for 8 or 9 years so its nice and worn in. Thanks for this video. Anyone have any mods to help get more headroom out of this amp ?

I'm sure that all 3 can be dialed n to find their sweet spots, but in this test I enjoyed the Rex the most :0)

I think this amp would work better with a true british celestion vintage 30

I put a g12h 30 watt 70 Anniversary. Its is amazing. I also tried a Greenback. The g12h was much more open. The tone is huge..I say Alvaro. You are correct. I'd play this amp with any JR. And a few other overpriced ones

Did you break the new speakers in? Maybe that’s why a few people in comments thing the original was better? Because the original had been played more.

Thanks, Darrell. My Princeton Reverb has the Eminence CR in it, and I really like the amp. I was interested in your “how-to” on changing out a speaker. In conversations with Fender, an amp tech, and one or two others, I was led to believe that working on your own amplifier was knocking on Death’s door. Your video instruction showed pulling tubes and removing a speaker to be a safe and easy process. Could you take a minute and explain where the danger lies in working on your own amplifier? T

Do not touch the circuit board or tube pin holes with any tool or fingers , speaker wires are safe with the amp unplugged from the wall 120 volt socket !
The amp has stored voltage in the capacitors long after its unplugged from the wall !

I want one amp of those, but in Spain there's no distribution and it is really expensive...
The stock speaker is enough, I won't change the speaker.

If I’m so broke that I have to buy a $200 tube amp, I can’t really afford a premium speaker.
I can’t see putting $300 in that amp. $300 is about half way to a sweet 20 watt Blackstar.
