I'm an over tipper on purpose just to shock the servers! I also write a "thanks for feeding me" on the check with a 😃 -y face.
Be generous with $$, yes, but also with praise and compliments. Thanks for your daily inspiration, Matthew Kelly. I love watching and hearing your kids clapping at the end - makes me smile EVERY time!! God bless them - and you in your good work. - Suzanna Rosa, a fellow writer

It is always wise to remember that money is a gift from God but only remains a gift so long as we are generous with this gift.

The voices of your children are uplifting and their giggles always births a genuine smile on my face. Their clapping is the whipped cream and cherries on top.
I listen every morning to your “Generosity Habit” videos. And they have transformed lives and i’d like to share one of those transformations.
Today, i went to have my leather riding boots polished. A man who goes by the name Diamond. 74 years young, looks like the chauffeur character in the 1989 movie Driving Miss Daisy. Three price suit, old world manners, driving cap, and a shy but sheepishly naughty smile. For years he worked at the prestigious city club in the barbershop, caring for the shoes of the patrons. After a ling tenure he retired, over a decade ago. Now, because of his many years knowing the businessmen whose families were members for generations, he works for a few hours each day, usually 8-noon at multiple car dealerships throughout the city, augmenting his retirement income with $10.00 shoe shines. And hopefully a tip.
I met him last Thursday and earnestly asked about his career as a shoe shine professional. It was a story which he told with pride and after 70 minutes brought it to a close by opening his worn leather wallet that cradled a treasure he gently and proudly displayed. It was a newspaper clipping that offered “proof” that others in the city praised him for his exemplary workmanship and work ethic. I found his life’s journey mesmerizing and promised I’d be back today with my riding boots, high heels, and ankle boots so he could polish them and help me look my best.
This morning was filled with interruptions and unplanned meetings and by 11.05 I rushed out of the office and drove to the dealership. The 9 minute journey was filled with thoughts and prayer that i didn’t want to disappoint him by not showing up. Nor I didn’t want him to think i wasn’t sincere when I asked him questions about how he was able to make ordinary leather glisten as if it was patent leather.
I was relieved when i walked in and saw him, but that feeling soon was replaced when I saw he had his coat and hat on, and had packed up his tools, obviously ready to leave at 11:20
He said “I’ve been waiting for you” with the voice of a small child who has been waiting all day for her father to pick her up for his weekend visitation. A mixture of acknowledgement that thank goodness you didn’t forget me , Coupled with a yearning that hopes you wont forget me in the future.
He said”So glad you did show up”.
I explained my work dilemma as we walked to his work station. He reached down to start to unpack his tools so he could begin to work.
I took his hands in mine and said, “no Diamond, I can see you are ready to leave. I am late”. Allow me to leave these items with you, and you can work on them during the week as you have time. i’ll come back next Thursday and pick them up.
He was taken aback and said “are you sure? I don’t mind doing them now”.
Im sure. And i will pay you for them now. I counted out the money into his dry withered hands. Looking up at him, to make sure it was the correct amount., he nodded. Then I doubled the amount. And this is for you Diamond.
His eyes filled with water that i do not think was the kind that older people sometimes display.
Rather , i suspect it rose up from deep within his soul.
He said. Thank you so much. I haven’t had any customers all day and he pointed to the people waiting, who all wore canvass athletic shoes. No leather shoes among any of them.
This will really help me he said in a soft whisper. I smiled with affection.
He walked me to my car, and said. Thank you again Miss Helyn. You are good.
    I said “God is good”.
He smiled. Yes, God is good.
I drove off and my face contorted into a painful grimace. If only i would have been more generous in my life. Like Schlinder.
But today, today i was blessed by Diamond.
    And by you Matthew.
From a participant and not a spectator.
    Helyn Bolanis

I had gotten into a habit of eating out almost daily with different friends. So I gave up eating out for Lent. However I did not give up getting together with my friends. So even though I was only having coffee while the others had a full meal I tipped generously, triple my coffee or at least the cost of a meal. The waitress hadn’t given up earning an income during lent. Thoroughly enjoying the talks & the book. Thank you Matthew.

I worked as an accountant for 40hr a week. I also waitressed on Friday night and all day Saturday. Waiting on the public was both physically and mentally difficult. The only thing that kept me going was the fact that I could quit if I wanted, because I had my normal 9 to 5 office job. I give a lot of credit to all the people waiting on the public and I do tip them generously. because I know how hard a job they have.

Be as generous with your money as your allowed to be. While we have bills and a mortgage that needs to be paid monthly we do the best we can to give. Thank you again Matthew. I Love this series.

When I hear "Be generous with your money" I think "I need a job." Currently due to health I had to quit work and come home. I have a finite amount of money but my parents are kindly giving me an allowance to maintain it and be able to keep up with important purchases until I'm back on my feet. I do still try to drop something in the basket at church when I think of it or I make a little extra money doing sewing for various acquaintances and friends of my mom who recommends them to me, but I feel that urge, that want, to be able to give more than five or ten bucks every once in a while, or be able to gift a generous amount to a waiter or waitress (If you use cash and call it a gift they can't tax it.).

Every time I make the decision to give more financially, I find that my lifestyle is not negatively impacted, even though I worried it might be. I try to take care of people financially, especially servers and those people whom I suspect are living paycheck to paycheck.

Yes, being generous with money is a gift to the giver. It is a heart connection with the person receiving something extra or even just giving when the need is right in front of me. I recently talked for an hour with a homeless person who helped ME with some ideas he
gave me. We exchanged our time and thoughts . I gave him some money, not much.
But , it was what HE needed. What a beautiful exchange of love. Giving creates grace.

Money can certainly get a hold on me. Some money wounds of childhood and feeling of scarcity BUT through Dynamic Catholic I remember a teaching to think of money as a gift from God, therefore it is NOT mine so no need to be possessive. Instead I now use my money knowing I will need to be accountable for where it goes and if I get stingy.
This has changed my entire feeling around money and I actually love to donate it!! I love to donate to food banks in a way of healing my own food addiction. It feeds my soul.
Thank you soooo much for this amazing Community

Amen - money can control us! Once you simply get it through your heart and head to be more generous and start being more generous, the blessings that come and are not expected can be overwhelming. From emptying your closets to giving of your time through ministries and other service, our hearts truly open, and we can become touched by Jesus' love.

Matthew, thank you once again. As much as you have emphasized how we can be generous with time and talent, you remind us to give of our money to family and friends as well as our neighbors. As Jim sorta said, Jesus did talk about money a lot, not in regards to needing it, but how often people focus on it in a daily basis with what it can be used for. I also think that giving away financially is essential in that loving sacrifice we need to do more of in life. With this day's generosity habit, I felt like I had done that last Friday. I went to a Saint Portrayal in a local church and there was a free will offering. I probably could've given nothing or somewhere between 1-5 dollars, but something inside me said, you don't see this person all the time and you don't know the livelihood of this person. I didn't give her all my money or a whole lot, but something inside me said to give $10, so I did. Will I regret that loss, I don't think so, for I know God will provide in his own time. God Bless. - Juls

Yes ...."be generous with your money;" means we must help those less fortunate..........help others in need without making judgements........but also be moneywise so that we are not helping people who will not help themselves.....not cannot but will not....believe me you will know the difference........I strive to tip generously and let the manger know why!!

Being generous with money right now is currently going through a couple of months of debt on a credit card. Dave Ramsey would tell me to limit all the swiping and use cash as much as I can.

I love being generous with money. I feel so good when I spread it around. I was taught >"it's made round to go round". I had a very loving grandmom & mom who loved putting "green pennies" (dollar bills) in all their cards, no matter how small it was. I've since do the same, although now a days I try to send a few more "green pennies" than they did. Inflation. hahahaha

For Christmas this year some of my children/grandchildren asked that I make a donation to a charity in their name. I happily agreed however now my feed and my mailbox are filled with requests for money. I feel guilty as the calendars, notepads and other items fill my mailbox. I can't give to all and it makes me reluctant to give to another charity for fear that will just result in more requests from that charity and new ones. I am being selfish and greedy?

    • @curtisfamily5238
      @curtisfamily5238 2 роки тому +1

I understand the conflicted emotions, Darlene. I don't necessarily mind "taking on" new charities, but I'm less likely to choose ones who just seem to use up all my donation on printing and mailing piles of stationery or by sending no telling how many "potential" donors a dime in the mail! I've begun to rely on Charity Navigator, and I believe they have a way of donating through their website that perhaps doesn't generate as much unsolicited mail. PS Just went through a mountain of expired calendars I'd felt bad about tossing when they came in...

    • @curtisfamily5238
      @curtisfamily5238 2 роки тому

I think that may be kind of the point... After all, consider God's amazing generosity to us, who cannot even begin to return to Him in kind (not that He "needs" anything we could give); the best we can do is offer our generosity to "the least of these"... Blessings! :D

Matthew says to tip generously the next time you receive fabulous service. I would say do it even when you don't. It might be the act that brings that not so great server into the presence of Christ
