Purchased this kit for a 2010 honda accord 2.4 a few weeks ago. Replaced spring with the longest spring in the kit only because i heard about people stretching the original OEM spring and it solving the rattle issue. Started the car first thing this morning and there was no rattle at all! Hopefully this solved this whole honda vtc actuator rattle nonsense. It wasn’t a huge deal but the torx bit did not fit but thankfully I had other torx bits lying around. For some reason the vtc actuator I worked on yesterday didn’t have an arrow on the cover. That really threw me off but thankfully there was a mark on the vtc cover and on the housing so I removed the cover without setting to TDC and lined the cover with the existing markings. I never ever, ever ever ever comment on anything but I did just to say the spring worked for me and most of all thank you spring start!!!!
That's great news! Seeing the the torx bit didn't fit and you had no arrow that would mean you don't have an OEM R44 VTC Actuator. Please reach out to us at support@spring-start.com. We're interested in what version aftermarket VTC Actuator you had.
I replaced my spring last year with the kit, resolved the issues till the end of this winter. I ordered the extreme kit which is a thicker spring, and it resolved the issue again. I just want to note I did not need to disconnect the power steering hose to take the valve cover off. All I did was push it out of the way.
Thanks for the idea about the power steering hose efficiency. You're correct this can be done in some vehicles. Reach out to us at support@spring-start.com we'd like to discuss the duration with you. It sounds like there may be something else going on in this case.
Got the kit for R40 VTC and installed last week in August 2023. 5 Stars, Exceptional customer service. It appears to have solved my issues! I'll continue to monitor and report back in 4-5 months. $23 and 1-2 hours to replace it yourself, Comes with the parts and information you need in the order. You can monitor to see if you need to continue onto Timing Chain and/or Tensioner replacement, which are way more expensive jobs$$$. Also check to see if its the Starter Motor or Belt/Pulleys making noise. Honestly, starting with Spring-Start repair kit first is the best option in my opinion.
I can confirm that this kit works on the 2013 Acura TSX for me. Relatively easy to install I recommend that you replace the valve cover gasket at the same time seems to fix the rattle. A+ customer service will update if it fails. The included torx security bit was helpful. A little loose in my ratchet and was easily fixed by jamming a corner/piece of paper towel along with the bit into the ratchet. Be CAREFUL that the engine is covered so loose bits cannot fall in.
Alright, I just ordered the Spring-Start VTC Repair Kit for my 2010 Honda Accord engine. I had already purchased the actual VTC and was planning on doing the repair myself, but after watching this video and reading through the comments I'm going to give it a shot. Y'all wish me luck!

This company went above and beyond on my order. I ordered a kit for my wife’s 2005 Accord. When it arrived, the security bit wouldn’t fit the bolts on the VTC actuator. The car I was working on had an oddball style of bolt in it. I wrote to them and got a reply in about 30 minutes. They told me they would be sending the proper security bit right away. That new bit along with the excellent instructions got the problem fixed in less than 15 minutes. It’s odd to get customer service like that these days.
Thanks for letting us know about this different style bolt in the older Accords and Elements. We'll make sure to send them out to all our future customers that specify the year and model of their vehicle.
Hi, I replaced my today, but same rattle after 2 hours I started the car and then 2 hours later again, so my question is, there is 2 springs same diameter but one was longer the the other one, in the video says to use the one the match the old one, or I should use the longer one, thank you!
@@Santi_fernandez-_- Sorry to hear you still have a rattle. It can be specific to each vehicle which spring works best. Reach out to us at support@spring-start.com and let us know the year and model and we'll get this this resolved.
Update!!! I took everything apart again and used the longest spring provided in the kit, same diameter. It rattled for 3 days on cold start even after an hour of turning off the car. On day 4 cold start, there is no rattle. It’s been 5 cold starts and no rattle at all, I hope it stays like that. I will update if there is any changes.

It's important to know that if you've had the VTC actuator start up noise for some time, it is likely your timing chain has stretched. If that is the case, a new spring may reduce or resolve the VTC noise, but you will have timing chain noise as a loose chain will typically slap against the timing chain guide and also cause performance issues. The only remedy in this case is to replace your timing chain (an advanced DIY job). It's fairly easy to determine if your chain has been stretched, but if not, replacing the VTC spring is a less invasive and much easier procedure.
That's correct. We find in some cases that when the rattle has been going on longer term the odds of chain elongation seem to be greater. That said, in many cases the new spring-start.com VTC spring does the trick. Occasionally a stronger spring is needed.
I just bought a 2010 TSX and also got this problem when cold start. Gonna give it a try it's only $23. Two question. What's the reason to put a shim behind the VTC Actuator and do I need to turn the engine to TDC before removing the plate? Thank you!
We use a shim or a bolt to keep the VTC actuator components together when working on it. We have full instructions included with each kit explaining how to do the job properly plus we offer email support for our customers.
Hey. Honda Accord 2012. I had 1-1.5 sec rattle. I replaced the spring and it got better, I still can hear a muted very short sound(maybe it’s just me) the hardest part was to replace the seals for ignition coils in the cover(since I had new ones from kit). And to wait for ultra black rtv to cure, it took forever, waited for 20 hours. For some reason I had 3 springs in a kit, 2 longer and smaller diameter and one as in actuator but few mm longer.
Thanks for the feedback. The various springs for tue R44 R5A 5A2 kits are for different revisions of VTC Actuators plus we add some with more spring force for Actuators with a rattle that's harder to resolve. This can be a delicate ballance. Any issues reach out to us at support@spring-start.com so we can assist.
For the 2012 Accord 2.4 often just the VTC actuator spring needs to be replaced. It's definitely the cheapest place to start and usually resolves the rattle issue. It uses the R44 R5A 5A2 kit with the access bit included.
@@spring-start What about the rest of his question? What would be the consequence if not replaced? My guess is that the sound is the only thing that is getting "fixed", because a 2 second "rattle" on startup is not very significant, even if it happens every day over the lifetime of the car.
@094340 From our experience the longer the rattle persists the more work within the VTC circuit needs to done. We've found timing chains out of specification and worn timing chain tensioners. On these interference engines it's critical to ensure these don't go to far off specification.
@@spring-start Thanks for your response, but wouldn't a code be thrown if the chain was in critical territory? Granted, there might be some stretching involved prior to a CEL, but I seriously doubt the damage (if any) incurred prior to the CEL, is enough to warrant a fix. Don't get me wrong, I'm a preventive maintenance proponent, but this fix seems superfluous unless the sound drives you absolutely crazy.
@094340 We've seen chains stretched into what we believe to be the "critical territory" without a CEL being triggered. The combination of a stretched timing chain and worn timing chain tensioner can cause issue in some cases.
Absolutely. We have great long term results replacing the VTC actuator spring and TCT on the Earth Dream 2.4 engines. CRV, Accord, TLX, ILX and more. Us the R44 R5A 5A2 kit. Always specify vehicle year and model on check out so we can tailor your kit for best results.

@@spring-start I’ll look into ordering soon, thanks for the reply. Someone mentioned that replacing the spring doesn’t necessarily fix the issue going on with the actuator, is that true? Can the actuator have a catastrophic failure at some point? Thank you for the reply so quick!
@@spring-start I understand and agree and will be trying it when I get some time but is it just masking a bigger issue? What’s the springs purpose? Can you go over that in another video?
@@Freemasonshair it helps the VTC actuator locking pin to engage and not rattle when there's reduced oil pressure. The typical fix is to replace the VTC actuator, timing chain and timing chain tensioner. Replacing the VTC actuator spring often fixes it with very little risk and expense.
I just got the kit for my 2010 Accord yesterday. Gonna give it a go this weekend and see how the spring replacement shapes up with a new valve cover gasket kit as well. If it’s been 3-4 weeks or so with the rattle is that considered a long enough time to consider changing the TCT as well? Mechanic shop I go to some times was telling me I might as well replace all the timing chain components and I really hope that’s not the case
Hello spring start I would like to know which spring kit a have to buy for my accord 2009 with 168k miles every time the car is off for more then 2h or even 1h the rattle is loud I hope the spring can help me with that thanks for your awesome job 🙏🏽🫶🏼
Is there a video of how you put it back together? I know, silly question but some people forget and then they have extra parts sitting around they forgot to put on.
With installation, once you clean everything up the manufacturer recommends HondaBond HT at the 4 locations on the head joints. A new valve cover gasket doesn't hurt. From there it's just the opposite of removal. For torque specs or other details we supply them on customer request.
So ive ordered the kit for my 2014 honda crv with supplied torx bit. One problem. What did you use to remove the security bolts from the vvt actuator. There isnt enough room for a screw driver or even a 1/4 inch socket on a ratchet containing the bit. This is because of the engine mount. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You

I have a 2011 Honda accord R44 I just replaced it with the similar spring in the kit I still have the rattle timing chain is tight .. should I try a different spring in the kit they literally looked ideal to the same length but I was reading longer springs work better
Our OEM style R44 VTC locking pin spring has good results when the rest of the circuit is in specification. It seems that as components wear Spring- Starts higher rate springs are needed for best results.

How well has this worked out for you, and do you think this is better than getting a new cam gear. I obviously want to do the cheaper option, but I always want to do the more reliable option. Has the spring really got rid of the rattle, and has it stayed consistent? Would appreciate your feedback! Thanks
A brand new OEM VTC actuator usually does the trick. It probably has better odds than the locking pin spring, but yes, for most vehicles when our procedures are followed just using our kit resolves the cold start rattle. Most people do it themselves in under an hour for about $30 without without a risk of upsetting timing. Much better than spending the typical $500-$1500 for a typical repair. Sometimes a stronger spring is needed, occasionally vehicles need a new timing chain tensioner as well.
This has me intrigued, we have a 2015 Honda Fit EX with less than 40,000 miles. We bought the car from my brother-n-law about 4 years ago. When he was in warranty he took it to Honda a few times for this issue and since they could not reproduce it was never resolved. Since we have had it the issue comes up often as well but since we are out of warranty I am sure Honda will do nothing for us. I am trying to understand how one spring will (or may) fix this issue. Did the original spring jut lose its tension? If the new spring a thicker gauge where it needs more force to compress? Before I spend money on something like this I would like to hear others that have done this is it has fixed your issue long term and try and understand how this actually resolves the issue. Thanks in advance to those that answer my questions.
Yes for the 2015-2020 Honda Fit the spring loses tension and causes the rattle. Our Spring-Start design R40 RZA kit resolves the issue. Email us if you want some proven links from people using our products or check the reviews. They are real.

I just ordered the repair kit for my 2008 Accord LX/170K miles on the original actuator. Only rattles occasionally on cold start. Must be a world record for not having it replaced before now. Always have run Mobil 1 plus BG MOA and WIX filters every 4-5K miles or 6 months. Have used BG EPR flush a couple of times after it started to use a little oil ( a quart consumption per oil change) Seems to work . My question is, can I use whichever spring I want, or must I just use the OEM style that my actuator has?
For your 2008 Accord with the original R44 VTC actuator you have 2 options in the kit spring-start.com is shipping you. The preferred option in our opinion would be the OEM design, it will be the shortest spring in your kit. Remove and check the locking pin for any high marks during the spring change. Gently remove any marks with a fine abrasive, clean, oil and reinstall the pin and the new spring. Any issues from there, email us at support@spring-start.com.
Good job on oil changes, mine is about the same mileage, just started making noise. Plan to replace it once we have some what nice weather, maybe around SPRING TIME😂
Absolutely. The Earth Dreams has a 5A2 VTC Actuator. The spring in this one is very delicate with a reduced spring rate. Replacing the VTC actuator spring with kit R44 R5A 5A2 and replacing the TCT has resolved the issue in all cases for us.This applies to 2014-2017 Accords, 2015-2019 CRVs & 2015-2020 Acura ILX & TLX
Hi there, had my k20 rebuilt just 5k km earlier, super new still with brand new VTC cam gear. Why is it that this rattling issue can occur on a new cam gear. Is it that the original spec of spring is not suited for my chain tension due to my toda tensioner and chain? I have got the spring start kit too right now. About to have it changed next week. Just seems to me changing this spring to fix this problem seems a little sketchy to me, as in, will the rattling come back again in a matter of time?
Sometimes these Actuators need a higher spring rate to stop the rattle on cold starts. There's a lot working together, the valve springs, cam shafts, tensioners, guides and Actuators. Hopefully you find the sweet spot. Any issues please email us.
Honda crv 2013 -123 000 miles (cold start rattle) .It has problem last 4 months , after changed oil 2 weeks ago to pennzoil 5w-20 it stopped add maximum fresh oil .If it working in future i don't know but good so far.
Let us know how it goes. Hopefully it lasts. We've seen minor improvements with certain oils but have never stopped a rattle with any type of oil unless it was low oil causing the issue initially.
@@grzegorzol9446 It's typically a mechanical issue that the spring-start spring corrects. If oil fixes it you're very lucky. We've never had any good results with different oils or filters. Regardless, the spring kit is more cost effective.
Typically the 2014 CRV has a newer revision VTC actuator and uses a longer spring. Specify that you have a 2014 CRV during check-out and we'll include our new design spring that usually eliminates the rattle in these ones.
Why does my 2010 Accord only rattle in the winter? It's fine above freezing, but cold nights usually gives me the rattle. How is temperature causing this?
That's a good question . We believe oil viscosity and in cold environments possibly metal contraction play a role. It typically begins with occasional rattles and progresses to more frequent rattles if the issue isn't dealt with. When it gets really bad it rattles every start. This usually means the timing chain has elongated and you need to replace the timing chain.
How exactly does the VTC Actuator work? Why does replacing this single spring remove the rattle? What even causes the rattle? I've had the issue for months now and have been putting off a new actuator entirely out of procrastination. I'll happily purchase your kit, I just don't understand how this part functions.
In many cases the locking pin spring gets weak and allows the VTC actuator to rattle. When the locking pin engages properly there usually is no cold start rattle. Replacing the locking pin spring usually resolves this.

Hi. My 2012 honda accord ex-l with 72,000 miles makes that noise on cold start. Do I just need to replace the vtc actuator spring to stop making that noise or do I need to replace the whole vtc actuator?
Our R44/R5A/5A2 Honda VTC repair kit has the proper springs to fix the 2003-2018 Honda Accord cold start rattle in OEM VTC gears. The S2 steel security bolts access bit is included. You just remove the VTC gear cover and replace the spring. Other steps are listed in our instruction page that is also included with the kit.
We followed up with a mechanical engineer who purchased our beta kit in September. As of last week his 2015 CRV is quiet and performing well. He left us a 5 star review, check the site. Our test vehicles have quiet starts and good performance.
Spring-start.com has a full selection of repair kits with the proper springs and the proper VTC Gear access tool. Instructions and email support is included.
Often P0341 means your timing is out of phase. If you haven't done any work that could effect your timing, first thing we would do is check the timing chain tensioner piston extension. Pretty sure anything over 12 mm is out of spec. This usually means you have a stretched timing chain. We feel this is a very important issue to address because the timing chain along with the timing chain tensioner keep everything in check. Its very important because these are interference engines.
Correct, but you also may need a new timing chain tensioner a long with the spring and working over the locking pin to ensure it moves in and out freely.
It depends on what kit you choose. It's between 1 and 4 springs in the kits but there are many revisions of VTC Actuators so you need the correct spring.
We don't use any loctite although some people have. To date we have not seen a cover bolt get loose once torqued. The issue has been people over torqueing the VTC Gear Cover and sometimes the bolt heads get stripped when people use a cheap bit. Using the supplied S2 steel bit in the kit will help with that.
I used flanged hex head bolts in the exact length of the original bolts (M6x1x30) and used Loc-Tite blue at 10 ft-lbs/120 in-lbs. The bolts were rated 10.9 on the heads. If you use a lower number rating you need to verify the max torque value. The bolts don't need to be torqued more than what I used due to their diameter, but I recommend Loc-Tite for peace of mind. Use purple or blue - NOT red.
We don't currently have sufficient data to determine that. Some people believe that the spider inside the VTC gear slapping back and forth can cause stress to the timing chain and timing chain tensioner. In some cases vehicles with the cold start rattle have VTC gear locking pin wear marks that need to be polished off for proper engagement. These are interference engines so a timing chain that does not have proper tension can cause issues if they jump a gear.
@@spring-startIs there anything specific we need to know about the pin when removing and then reinstalling? Like alignment marks etc I know the pin sits in the backplate to be locked so would we align the pin into that opening then reinstall the spring?
Make sure your chain case is covered first. It's a straightforward procedure. Ensure it slides smoothly in its bore. Scotch Brite pads are good to clean locking pins up. Re-oil , insert and test for smooth movement
@@spring-start Thank you for the speedy and detailed responses. I know y’all recommend replacing the tensioner but is it necessary if there is no play in the chain and the tensioner isn’t bottomed out? Just got the kit I’m today and saw the notes
WHY .... ? Please can somebody tell me WHY it is SO difficult for people posting these MANY "VTC Actuator FIX" videos to NOT mention the "Security" bit size ? Its really laughable how NOBODY ever considers talking about it. Though they will freeze frame and reference the ( 10mm ) socket 35x's ?
The torx bits normally come in a kit. Like sockets, at times it takes trial and error to find the correct size. Maybe they should send you some Baby powder so You can pat it on your ass.
I recommend replacing the original bolts with M6x1x30 flanged hex bolts and torque to 10 ft-lbs/120 in-lbs for bolts marked 10.9 on the heads. If your bolt heads are marked 8.8 then that spec may be too high.

Thanks for choosing us to fix your cold start rattle!
Thanks for confirming! We are glad our products are working for you and we're here to help.

Just purchased the kit, I’m gonna try this, the accord I just got , not always rattles on cold start, but when it does is awful.

Hi, I replaced my today, but same rattle after 2 hours I started the car and then 2 hours later again, so my question is, there is 2 springs same diameter but one was longer the the other one, in the video says to use the one the match the old one, or I should use the longer one, thank you!

Received my kit last week, just have to put my gloves on. Thanks again for the straightforward video!
Oh yeah. I think the kit comes with the correct bit. That might help you
Bro this worked!!! Thank you so much for the video!
Finally someone selling the springs.. just purchased 2. 👌
Thanks for the order for your Accord Euro Maykel!

Sounds good the 2013 Accord engines are very responsive to the fix when following the instructions included with our R44/R5A/5A2 kit.
Installed this replacement spring along with a new timing chain tensioner, no more rattle.
That's great news Dale, we really appreciate your business and the update that the procedure worked on your 2011 CRV with the R40 VTC Gear.
We have a 2012 Accord SE, exhibits a quick rattle(
For the 2012 Accord 2.4 often just the VTC actuator spring needs to be replaced.
@@spring-start
Thanks for your response, but wouldn't a code be thrown if the chain was in critical territory? Granted, there might be some stretching involved prior to a CEL, but I seriously doubt the damage (if any) incurred prior to the CEL, is enough to warrant a fix.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a preventive maintenance proponent, but this fix seems superfluous unless the sound drives you absolutely crazy.
@094340 We've seen chains stretched into what we believe to be the "critical territory" without a CEL being triggered. The combination of a stretched timing chain and worn timing chain tensioner can cause issue in some cases.

@@spring-start I’ll look into ordering soon, thanks for the reply. Someone mentioned that replacing the spring doesn’t necessarily fix the issue going on with the actuator, is that true? Can the actuator have a catastrophic failure at some point? Thank you for the reply so quick!
In most cases, when the instructions included with the kit are followed and the right spring is used for the gear the rattle is reduced or eliminated.

There are Earth Dreams TCT video on UA-cam. There is risk so any doubt have mechanic do that part.
Hi. How about Accord 2014 K24W (2.4) earth dream engine. Does this apply

I have the error code p0341, what would be the damaged parts of a 2009 Acura Tsx that has 175,000 miles?
Often P0341 means your timing is out of phase. If you haven't done any work that could effect your timing, first thing we would do is check the timing chain tensioner piston extension. Pretty sure anything over 12 mm is out of spec. This usually means you have a stretched timing chain. We feel this is a very important issue to address because the timing chain along with the timing chain tensioner keep everything in check. Its very important because these are interference engines.
Wait, so this will get rid of the rattle? You don’t need to swap out the whole actuator??
That's right, we believe that most OEM Honda and Acura VTC Actuators do not need replacement.
Correct, but you also may need a new timing chain tensioner a long with the spring and working over the locking pin to ensure it moves in and out freely.
@@caseyalexander2244 Doubt it.
Please what is the size of those security bolts?
It will depend on the year and model of vehicle. We stock most of them. Please contact support@spring-start.com
@@spring-start mine is 2005 Honda Accord.
@charlesmartins5885 perfect. Contact support@spring-start.com and we can help.
It’a only One spring?
It depends on what kit you choose. It's between 1 and 4 springs in the kits but there are many revisions of VTC Actuators so you need the correct spring.
Hi, why is your website not working it says it is in maintenance mode? Thanks
We're switching over to a website version that will have better performance on mobile.
Hoping to be back online in a few hours.
Back online, let us know if you have any issues here support@spring-start.com
Do you have a kit for a 2013 CR-V?
We sure do, it's the R44/R5A/5A2 kit complete with the access bit, instructions and email support included. We ship worldwide.
Are the bolts on the vtc actuator tightened at a specific torque spec?
These are 6mm bolts on the VTC Gear cover. A mechanical engineer advised 10Nm, about 8ftlbs.
@@spring-start Do the bolts also need thread locker/lock tight applied to the threads or just torqued to 8ftlbs?
Does the rattle cause any wear out of metal ?
We don't currently have sufficient data to determine that. Some people believe that the spider inside the VTC gear slapping back and forth can cause stress to the timing chain and timing chain tensioner. In some cases vehicles with the cold start rattle have VTC gear locking pin wear marks that need to be polished off for proper engagement.
These are interference engines so a timing chain that does not have proper tension can cause issues if they jump a gear.
@@spring-startIs there anything specific we need to know about the pin when removing and then reinstalling? Like alignment marks etc
I know the pin sits in the backplate to be locked so would we align the pin into that opening then reinstall the spring?
Make sure your chain case is covered first. It's a straightforward procedure. Ensure it slides smoothly in its bore. Scotch Brite pads are good to clean locking pins up. Re-oil , insert and test for smooth movement
@@spring-start Thank you for the speedy and detailed responses. I know y’all recommend replacing the tensioner but is it necessary if there is no play in the chain and the tensioner isn’t bottomed out?
Just got the kit I’m today and saw the notes
@HWalker It depends on the vehicle and how many miles. The tensioner has a spring that wears out too.
N torx ?
The different access bits for each VTC actuator are included in our kits
Funny how yours didnt have the little black plastic piece that locks the vtc inside
The newer VTC Gear designs no longer have the spacers. We've only seen the black plastic ones in RBB/RBC.
@@spring-start good to know! I did mine today. Works perfect! Thanks guys
Awesome thanks again - you were our first shipment to Australia 😊
@@spring-start you're welcome
Do you have something gor Acura tsx ?
We have the RBB/RBC kit for older TSX's and the R40 kit for 2009 to 2014.
WHY ....
We totally agree. Spring-Start.com
The torx bits normally come in a kit. Like sockets, at times it takes trial and error to find the correct size. Maybe they should send you some
Baby powder so
You can pat it on your ass.
T30 Torx
I recommend replacing the original bolts with M6x1x30 flanged hex bolts and torque to 10 ft-lbs/120 in-lbs for bolts marked 10.9 on the heads. If your bolt heads are marked 8.8 then that spec may be too high.
love you
what does the spring push on? My spring launched out...not sure if anything else came out.
It depends on the VTC actuator. Sometimes just the backer plate, sometimes a spacer disc and other times a spacer pin.
Without knowing the type of actuator we can't tell you what it pushes against except for always the locking pin on the inboard side.
Which kit fits the fit? Lol
The R40/RZA kit fits your Fit 😀
Many thanks to Daniel who posted an awesome video on how to replace the VTC Actuator spring on the 2015-2020 Honda Fit. These ones are a bit more involved than most so we really appreciate the great video to help others.

Not quite sure what you mean here...?
I just did this, waited 4 hours to start car and rattle was worse???
I'll see again in morning.
There where 3 springs in the kit and I used the dark one that matched what I took out. The stainless one was also szne size but didn't use it.
Please reach out to support@spring-start.com and we'll get this resolved.
Would this spring replace kit work with k24a2
Absolutely. We have the RBB/RBC VTC upgrade kit for the K24a2. It's rated 5 stars. Verify model and year on our website. We have models and years each kit works for.

Didn’t do a damn thing 2012 Honda CRv
Reach out to support. Usually something was missed in the instructions or a different spring from the kits required. support@spring-start.com
Others have shown the spring -- and not oil flow -- to be the problem. Unfortunately, elongating the spring didn't fix my "updated" Honda actuator. Can you use the Honda spring kit in a Dorman 917-251? Or was Dorman smart enough to include a stronger spring? I have a K24 Z3 in a 2012 CR-V. This Dorman will be the fourth actuator going in. Couldn't source a Honda actuator in time. Need to protect the timing chain from damage ASAP.
We don't recommend installing non-OEM VTC Actuators. We have an R44 R5A rebuild kit for the 2012-2014 CRVs and 2008-2012 Accords available. Reach out to us: support@spring-start.com for details.
Just a warning... those bolts strip incredibly easy. I guess I am going to have to replace the entire gear now.
Sorry to hear you had issues with the VTC actuator cover bolts. It does happen occasionally. Please reach out to support@spring-start.com and we can send you some replacements.

I just installed a new vtc spring...still have the rattle. Any suggestions?
We sure do. Reach out to us at support@spring-start.com and we'll get it fixed.
The root cause of this rattle is not due to an issue in spring. By replacing the spring you can temporarily fix it, but it will come back. It seems the rattling issue is something related to the oil pressure.
Do you have a kit for a 2010 crv?
We sure do! The R40-RZA-5R1 kit does the trick for the 2010 CRV.
I have a 2009 honda Accord 4cl that is doing that rattling. Where can I buy that spring?
