I have this issue, and already saw a ton of videos about this. Yours is the most simple an straightforward fix. I'll try and source the sprint in europe (where I'm living). Thanks for the videos, I was scared to do the fix myself but this made me see it was not that complicated, also I'm due to change the valve gasket plus tune the valves, this way I can do all of that in an afternoon. Really appreciate it.
Thanks for taking the time to post this! Definitely worth trying before getting into removing the cam and replacing the whole actuator! Crazy how many people this affects and kind of surprised there hasn't been a recall...
This worked for me. Had to shorten the spring 3 coils to get it installed. No more startup rattle. Brace the back plate of the VVT actuator with a large screw driver when removing the security bolts. Well done!
My 2014 CRV replace VTC,chain, bolt, tensioner, etc. 2 years ago at dealer. There wasn’t any rattle before. Code comes up, dealer replace solenoid work for 6 months, then replace whole VTC package. However, 2 years later rattle sound comes up, and I follow your step replace spring, rattle sound just gone. Thank you for your video.
Just did this today on my 2012 CRV. Easy enough to do if you have the right tools (1.5hrs). It did not completely stop the rattle, but significantly reduced how loud it was. I just bought a variety pack of compression springs and found one that fit and was longer/stiffer. Maybe with a new oil change and some liqui-moly mos2 will stop it altogether. No check engine lights, still able to engage VTEC. I think if I buy the spring you suggested the noise may stop completely. Timing Chain looked fine and tight as well. Note: For the CRV, you need a 5 point T30 bit, not a 6 point like in Civics. I did not rotate the engine, I just kept note of where the spring was. Thank you!
I just did an oil change with liqui moly engine flush, and after i put a thicker 10w40 motor oil. Since then the rattle was gone like magic! Actually did‘nt even intend to try and fix this but it somehow did no idea how🤭 my car is 2002 civic type R with just over 100k miles
If the spring doesn't stop the rattle follow this order of operations: 1. Replace your timing chain tensioner - very easy and can save your engine. K-series need these basically every 100-150K miles. 2. Verify your timing chain is not stretched while you have the valve cover off to line up cylinder #1 top dead center. You'll be doing this when you replace the timing chain tensioner anyway. If the chain is stretched, when you have the white crank pulley mark lined up the arrow on the timing cover, the notches on the cam gears won't line up. If the chain is stretched, replace it along with the tensioner. 3. Open the VTC actuator back up and remove the locking pin. When you do this, your intake cam gear will move forward. Don't panic, later you can rotate the engine forward and line the detent for pin and bolts holes back up. Only rotate clockwise - ever. Test the locking pin, it should move in and out freely with no drag or hanging up. If it does not - work the pin over with emery cloth and/or fiber abrasive polishing attachments on a rotary tool. Get the pin nice and clean, and smooth until it goes in and out of the detent in the back cover smooth and easy. Add oil to the pin when doing this. 4. Last item to check / replace - the VTEC oil control valve. If it's open when you pull it out - replace it. It should be closed.

Hello, so this is the correct repair for having start up rattle. However, while the recommended spring might work for some vehicles, I am guessing there are a couple of different designs and spring lengths, it did not work for mine. It stopped the rattle but keeps the timing locked. Luckily I kept my old spring.... Reuse your old spring! Just stretch it out, I ended up redoing this with that method and now everything works as it should with no start up rattle!
I've found the failure to be a broken pin that holds the actuator in the locked position. Replacing the cam gear with the updated part fixed the issue. Not to bad of a job. Quite technical though.
The first thing you do if this occurs is check your oil level. I was 2 quarts low. Topped it off and fixed. How I lost 2 quarts of oil in only 4000 miles is another issue.

Okay, I'm in the process of gathering parts/tools and have a few questions: 1. How do you get the VTC arrow pointing up if it is not doing so when you remove the valve cover? 2. Are the bolts holding the plate a T27 or standard pattern? 3. When you leave those two in place, is that just to keep the plate spring from pushing out, i.e. take them out "evenly", yes? Again, thanks for filming this! Just want to be sure I know what to expect once I get going!
Hi, glad you like the video 1. At the 4:56 mark I give you an idea on how to rotate the engine. 2. The bolts are a security 5 point torx bit but I used a small vyse grip to take mines out before I put 10mm bolts for future repairs. 3. The 2 bolts are to keep the spring from flying out or into the engine. While you unscrew them hold the plate closed then slowly pull it off when the bolts are off.
Thanks for posting this video…I found it very helpful. I followed it step by step, but ran into a few problems. My bolts that held the actuator plate on had a rounded head, so I had to purchase the special TS27 5 point torx socket to remove them. While removing those 5 bolts, of course I stripped one. This lead me to buy M6 x 30mm bolts to replace them. I found the spring to be considerably longer than the OEM one, so I took 2 loops off like someone else mentioned in the comments. I had to turn the actuator much farther than what you rotated in the video…that part made me nervous. It now all back together, and I felt confident that i was good to go, but now I have a no start issue. Anything I should try before I tear it apart again?

So... got the valve cover off and... promptly stripped the head of the first 5 point star bolt I tried... 🤦♂️ Gotta love how the manufacturer makes things as difficult as possible for the DIY'er. Did not try to do any more because, 9 times out of 10, it just goes downhill from there. So, our CR-V now has a new valve cover gasket and spark plug seals and... the same rattle on start up. Gonna just let it be as it's been doing it for 6 years now and is still running just fine otherwise.
The diameter of the spring on my Rsx Type S is much bigger than the recommended size specs in this video... Would you happen to know the specs of the spring for an rsx vtc?
Thank you for this great and wonderful video. My question is, how do you know it is not the Vtc valve or the strainer that are causing the rattle, if it is the same P10009 code.? Thank you again.
@@armechanicshelpandrepair2052 actually, you would never see slack in the chain, the tensioner takes up the slack, but the tensioner can be going bad and you'd never see anything different in the chain.
I'm a lil late to the party but will this fix also alleviate the feeling Like vtec isn't kicking in and it's a slug? Either way mine is so loud at start up il doing this immediately. Great video
Thanks, and it depends. I would clean the vtec screen filter that’s by the tensioner pulley. And the vtec oil solenoid. And do this fix. Best of luck, AR.
You don't need to turn the camshaft, just take note of the direction of the faceplace. Turning it is just for easier access to the spring and reduces the likelihood you drop it.
No, I did that to have a better position to remove the bolts and not drop anything into the engine, but if doing this make sure your timing chain is not stretched or loose, because it can cause the chain to skip some teeth and you willl have to get engine back into timing. Good Luck
Dear sir I have the same problem please let me know what should happen if I don’t get it fixed, can’t do it my self and I doubt there is Atalanta’s technician that can do it just like u did

Don’t know if I can get a response . But I recently bought a 2010 Honda Accord coupe . And it’s doing that sound ……. What I got from this video is that it’s a simple spring ……. I’m sure I can make this repair on my own but some people are saying a check engine light can maybe come up because the spring can be too strong and could mess things up . Is it safe to do this repair ?
You could always get a lower rate spring but this worked for me. With no check engine or anything funny. Key is to make sure everything is put back in correctly. (Spring lined up and straight when putting everything back together
Question, is this only for the crv actuator? I’m having the exact same issue and want to know if this fix will work for my 2014 accord coupe EX-L because I was about ready to go in and replace it all myself cause the repair was $$$ but this could genuinely save me so much. I believe this should be something covered under warranty or recall because I’ve heard so many come across it but if this fix will work for it ( my accord) I know a few others I could pass this along to that it would help tremendously
one thing tho if u pull the bolts put the center thst the chain rides on sinks a bit wont tbis cause binding iv taked few other vtc gears fro. toyota and subaru and needed to make an alighment tool so it dont bind when u upen them
Our CR-V has been doing this for years! Thought it was just a loose heat shield for the longest time but will be attempting (!) to fix it this summer and will also be submitting my next oil change for analysis to determine if it has caused any issues...
Hey I have a couple quick questions: Is this the 1st car you did this on? Has the rattle returned after you have done this fix? If the new spring is too strong won't it prevent the actuator from unlocking because the oil pressure can't overcome it? Any idea on where we can source a spring? Thanks!
I did this repair with the recommended spring on my 09 TSX. The replacement spring was a good deal longer than the one that was in mine. While it did fix the rattle, I believe 11:11 Ministries is correct with his question regarding the actuator staying locked. I am getting a p0011 code for vtc problems and worse mpg's. So it seems the valves are stuck in the more aggressive/sporty timing. I am going to check the solenoid/ clean the screen and will update after that.
So I ended up replacing the solenoid. However, I am still getting vtc codes, check engine is on immediately and vsa comes on after 20 minutes or driving, I don't understand lol. I am getting phenomenal MPGs and a little less power on the low end, but barely noticeable. Also, the engine sounds more aggressive, but not bothersome. I saw someone shortened the spring, maybe that would help. All in all, I prefer my current state over the start up rattle.. the lights are annoying though ha ha
I have a 2014 accord ex with a 4cyl and manual transmission. This rattle only happens after a cold start when I am using brakes or down shifting but doesn't happen after the engine has warmed to operating temperature

Hi. As anyone opened the front cover of their VTC Actuator and stretched the lock pin spring in it? If so, did it work out fine? Can it damage anything over time? Thanks
@@Daniel-xq7ny Not many but stretching the spring does not increase its uncompressed force significantly so there's little to no risk. It may not even fix your issues because the spring returns to its original shape with heat. The biggest risk is dropping something into the engine while the valve cover is off. TBH you could either live with the rattle, try this fix, or replace the VTC altogether. Depending on your mileage and service history, you may have luck using an engine flush additive and fresh oil change. The VTC has tight tolerances so any gunk/debris can reduce oil flow and/or ability return to the locked position. YMMV

@@bigE35094 NAPA sells the 5 star bit
My 2014 CRV also rattles when I put it in reverse when backing from the driveway after I let the car warm up.
This is the same noise I have on my 2010 Honda Crosstour. Im gonna see if my brother can fix it. Thanks
Where do you get the spring from
So... got the valve cover off and... promptly stripped the head of the first 5 point star bolt I tried... 🤦♂️
Gotta love how the manufacturer makes things as difficult as possible for the DIY'er. Did not try to do any more because, 9 times out of 10, it just goes downhill from there. So, our CR-V now has a new valve cover gasket and spark plug seals and... the same rattle on start up. Gonna just let it be as it's been doing it for 6 years now and is still running just fine otherwise.
Sorry to hear that, I will make a video on how to remove the bolts without any special tools soon.
I used vice grips...and got new 10mm bolts
@@evilways5387 That's great! I've always ended up with rounded bolt heads and, given the location, didn't want to take that chance.
What size were the new bolts you bought?if you remember please.
With that code I’ll check the timing Chain tensioner first, remove the valve cover and check for slack on the chain.
Best of luck,
AR.
Hello. Do I really need to turn the camshaft or I can just open the actuator at any position and stretch/replace the spring?
You don't need to turn the camshaft, just take note of the direction of the faceplace. Turning it is just for easier access to the spring and reduces the likelihood you drop it.
@@AmritBanks great! Appreciate it. Thank you so much.
No, I did that to have a better position to remove the bolts and not drop anything into the engine, but if doing this make sure your timing chain is not stretched or loose, because it can cause the chain to skip some teeth and you willl have to get engine back into timing. Good Luck
Dear sir I have the same problem please let me know what should happen if I don’t get it fixed, can’t do it my self and I doubt there is Atalanta’s technician that can do it just like u did
if its truly the VTC then you should be fine if you can deal with the sound, I heard many people who just leave it as is for years. but i could be wrong.
2010 crv rattles on cold start and continuously rattles when driving could it be the chain?
Hi, it could be the chain or chain tensioner, hopefully it isn’t the rod bearings caused by driving with low oil.
Did you retrieve that screw that went flying into the engine bay at 8:27?
Yes with a magnet
Just did this, it worked for 10 miles till the check engine light came on. Replacing the phaser sprocket this week.
So then the vtc actuator wasn’t your problem
It was the probably. Spring stopped the noise but through a check engine light.
@@josephroyer9532 so it stopped the sound but now you have a check engine? Did you double check the hoses and connectors?
vtc strainer screen pluged

Is it better to change the whole actuator or just the springs?
Dealing with the same problems
Whole actuator I heard I got the same problem
Don’t know if I can get a response . But I recently bought a 2010 Honda Accord coupe . And it’s doing that sound ……. What I got from this video is that it’s a simple spring ……. I’m sure I can make this repair on my own but some people are saying a check engine light can maybe come up because the spring can be too strong and could mess things up . Is it safe to do this repair ?
You could always get a lower rate spring but this worked for me. With no check engine or anything funny. Key is to make sure everything is put back in correctly. (Spring lined up and straight when putting everything back together
Would .028 for wire dia. Work?

Question, is this only for the crv actuator? I’m having the exact same issue and want to know if this fix will work for my 2014 accord coupe EX-L because I was about ready to go in and replace it all myself cause the repair was $$$ but this could genuinely save me so much. I believe this should be something covered under warranty or recall because I’ve heard so many come across it but if this fix will work for it ( my accord) I know a few others I could pass this along to that it would help tremendously
It’s for most of the accords, crvs, 4 cylinders
Looks promising, but will it work on my 2014 CR-V?
Worked on a 2012 CRV
good looks with the video, very straight forward
Glad it helped, I’m here for any questions if anything.
one thing tho if u pull the bolts put the center thst the chain rides on sinks a bit wont tbis cause binding iv taked few other vtc gears fro. toyota and subaru and needed to make an alighment tool so it dont bind when u upen them
Is this rattle gonna cause some damage to the engine, if been ignored for a very long time???
I’ve heard people saying it’ll stretch the timing chain but I’m not too sure about that, there’s people that live with this sound for years.
Our CR-V has been doing this for years! Thought it was just a loose heat shield for the longest time but will be attempting (!) to fix it this summer and will also be submitting my next oil change for analysis to determine if it has caused any issues...

Hi, hey where did you buy the spring?
Where do you get the new compression spring?
Pinned links
Hey I have a couple quick questions:
Is this the 1st car you did this on? Has the rattle returned after you have done this fix?
If the new spring is too strong won't it prevent the actuator from unlocking because the oil pressure can't overcome it?
Any idea on where we can source a spring?
Thanks!
Hi, I’ve repaired a couple of cars and all good still, 2 of mines, 2013 Accord and 2012 CRV
@@tyson5756 thanks, I'll be waiting on the update
@@tyson5756 have you checked the solenoid?
Good chance this could be your problem
I’m having a rattle sound and all of my lights on the dash turn on. I have a 2013 Honda Accord LX I wonder if it’s this issue

Hi. As anyone opened the front cover of their VTC Actuator and stretched the lock pin spring in it? If so, did it work out fine? Can it damage anything over time? Thanks
Nope, should be fine.
You have done many this way?
@@Daniel-xq7ny Not many but stretching the spring does not increase its uncompressed force significantly so there's little to no risk. It may not even fix your issues because the spring returns to its original shape with heat. The biggest risk is dropping something into the engine while the valve cover is off. TBH you could either live with the rattle, try this fix, or replace the VTC altogether. Depending on your mileage and service history, you may have luck using an engine flush additive and fresh oil change. The VTC has tight tolerances so any gunk/debris can reduce oil flow and/or ability return to the locked position. YMMV
@@AmritBanks Asking because on my 2010 CR-V I did stretch it a little than and no more rattle on cold start. But a little tapping noise started until hot and it was the chain tensioner. Was is just coincidence?
