In this video, I bought my wife a Twin Turbo Coyote Mustang that has a very strange history and I believe this was an insurance fraud deal. The dealer sold it cheap because of a suspicious total loss on the carfax but wait until you see what we find underneath! This one is quite the mystery so let me know what you think in the comments.

i've used that "i'm buying this for my wife" trick way way too many times before, you'll eventually get caught out lol
My wife an electric guitar I bought her. She does not play. I do. It did not work....She saw through it
I wish I could afford to buy my wife some cool stuff! 🙁
Being an auto, I am sure it is for his wife…
But Alex, those under hood plastics seems REALLY close to the turbos, that’s normal???
@@rocketmanrick A wife seeing through your story is a lot different than buying a car from someone you don’t know. Your wife knows you and has been with you long enough to learn the signs you give off of weather you’re telling the truth or not.
@@SilentRacer911 it is in an engine bay that was never designed to have turbos in it. Just cuz its normal doesn't mean that fuse box/PDM is gonna survive tho
If I was looking at such a straight car with no sign of body repair that was documented as a total loss, my attention would go straight to VIN and engine numbers.
100%. It reeks of insurance fraud or stolen and retagged.
I was thinking the same thing. Vin swap.
Carfax isn't 100% either. Could just be incorrectly documented.
Somebody in the comments beat me to it.
Carfax can be manipulated. I know, I have a friend who got into an accident. Got it fixed by a body shop out of pocket not involving insurance. The repairs did not get registered by CarFax.
Exact same thing happened to my 06 Saab 9-3 Aero daily 3 years ago. Guy sideswiped me, damaged the back driver door, scuffed up wheels and side skirt. It was marked as a total loss, with a pay out to me. I was optioned to buy it back for only $500. Since it drove perfectly fine, I did. Used the money to buy new wheels/tires, and had the door fixed and repainted. Still drive it to this day.

Hey Alex, you should take your wife on a High Performance Driver Education (HPDE) aka track day exercise! She'd learn a huge amount about how to control a high horsepower car in a safe and really fun environment. I don't really know the scene in the Chicagoland area, but I'll bet there are plenty of great options, or even up in Wisconsin (Road America in Elkhart Lake would be awesome!) - it would also make some great content! I know she's done a few drag runs, but really hurling a fast car around some cones, and then later on a road course would really benefit her skills! Heck, I'm sure you'd learn a lot too!
Perfect way to round out your surprise and make sure she stays safe. There are already way too many UA-cam videos of people wrecking high performance cars because they let the power get away from them. (It would also be an awesome day of fun driving)
good idea considering mustang has a notorious reputation of running into people
This would be a great video as well
I was going to write something similar. All of Alex's Viewers obviously care about him and family.
Yeah, last place that I want to see Alex and Mrs. LSC is on one of the many Mustang crash compilations.
I rented a v8 GT mustang (never been into mustangs) , but that car changed my mind. Was beautiful inside. Ice cold AC, nice stock stereo, Perfect amount of power, super smooth transmission. Now i want one, but used cars are such a terrible price right now
I love that you are turning your wife into a gearhead! The video with her at the dragstrip was awesome. Watching her get excited about making her grocery getter go faster was fantastic! More Mrs. Palmeri videos in the future sounds great.
Alex’s wife is a real trooper, she’s going to love it, let’s just watch her face when she floors it.
heat wrap the turbo's hotside. they're cooking the valve covers and probably everything close to them. Sweet deal by the way 😉
It's easy to figure out.
*Car get into light crash
*Insurance company totals car and pays a check with buyback option.
*Owner keeps and fixes car puts turbo kit on
*Car never gets salvage title as they never become the owner, but has a funky car fax.
Pretty standard stuff that keeps a car from getting a salvage title.
Exactly! The car got “totaled” because of cost or parts availability. Sometimes the money threshold for the insurance company to total it is lower than the state who is issuing the title’s threshold. (Meaning the insurance co totals the car if the repair is more than 70% of the cars value but the state says that for a branded title the damage needs to be 100% of the value or more). I know this because I just went through this process with my insurance company.
Exactly I did that on a Chevy cavalier they totaled the car out twice and I got about 3 to 4 times wat I paid for the car insurance in claims 🤣
That is not how it works. If you owner retain salvage, the insurance company will make you transfer the title to salvage before they issue you payment. What most likely happened, is either the insurance company ran a total loss valuation on the car, and deemed it repairable, that is showing on the car fax report, or for what ever reason, the insurance company did not pay out on the claim. Different companies have different thresholds for T/L's, and State Farm loves to deem vehicles a total loss when the repairs are 50% of the ACV. As they drove off road, I cannot see that it would be an issue where there was policy limits from multiple claimants.
Lol, that's not how it works. You sound like one of those sleazy Salvage title sellers. "Yeah, had $2k in damage and they totaled it." Meanwhile, you see in auction photos the entire front was smashed to bits and they reported a bent frame.
Additionally, they don't let you keep a clean title. Something weird happened here.
@@timmaahhhh neither you nor rustler08 have a clue of what you are talking about. I have had this on at least 5+ cars. The title stays clean because the insurance company never takes possession of the vehicle.....it stays titled in the owners name. Never in my 5+ vehicles I have bought back (hail, deer damage, etc) has state farm ever wanted my title or to me transfer the title and hold my payment. They paid me my amount, minus the buy back, and I still have a clean titled vehicle. Those vehicles have been sold or given to family and never once did they get a salvage branding. It's once they take possession of the vehicle, the title is handed to them and becomes their property, is when they check the box of 70% damage, and send them to auction. My wife's Hyundai Accent was totaled by my aunt when it was a year old. My Aunt bought it back from insurance at my request, and sold it to me. I transferred the title and guess what....clean title with zero salvage branding.
You two sound like you both have no clue what your talking about, especially when two comments above you have also done this before.
If it’s a California Special, which it looks to be. The stripes are missing. So I would definitely say it’s been repaired or repainted.
You couldn’t get the GT/CS without Stripes.
This is very typical when the owner of a vehicle buys back their car from the insurance company after it is deemed a total loss, When you buy back your own car from an insurance company after it is deemed a total Wass certain states do not require a salvage inspection so the vehicle maintains a clean title
As a "write off" that shows no sign of being written off, I'd be checking vin, engine numbers and every i.d tag and seam around identification etc.
It's either been a insurance scam or well done rebirth, I'm leaning heavily towards the later..
some times you get lucky, I bought a G8 gt that was totaled because water reached the floor boards but never got inside the car. It had 120k miles on it, today she has has over 164k. Call me lucky LOL
I started thinking pretty early on “check the vins, scan the computer”
@@black7844 LUCKIER THAN CRAP....DID IT HAVE THE LS V8

Could’ve been a clerical error
My insurance company computer malfunctioned and reported a minor damage as a total loss to carfax on a truck I owned. They reported back to carfax it was a mistake, but they never removed it from carfax records. So, to carfax it is listed as total loss with clean tittle just like the mustang. The truck was repaired by the insurance company and to this day still has clean tittle at the state. But carfax shows it as total loss. It why you cannot trust just carfax.
@Peter Angles It sad so many people treat Car Fax as the bible for car buying. When they do get a lot of stuff wrong and refuse to fix it.
LSC nails it again!!! Love it!!! You got it, now give us the updates along your way of building your wife’s new drag car and maybe teaching her a thing or two along the way of course. Would make for a fantastic series and a lot of fun. I’m sure this car has many mods in its future for sure 😊
In my years of being a dealer, I've found that Carfax has lots of problems with misreporting.
I get units all the time where a kid at Big O accidentally typed "1,000,000" miles instead of "100,000", and then it's condemned until you put the effort into getting it off the report.
I've seen that a ton of times too!

These early gen 1 coyotes sometimes have issues with cylinder 8. The cooling wasn’t the best around that cylinder so it’s usually the one to go if you’re in a high heat application.
Yep, had that issue on my 11. The way the oil port was around that cyclinder wasn't optimal.
When I was in my accident last year State Farm would not send an adjuster out in person, they relied on pictures that I personally sent them, upon sending the pictures they came back telling me the car was totaled. Agent blatantly told me that sending a check was what they were told to push. So under those circumstances I could see it easily being able to total a car, get a check and then buy the car back for a couple thousand.
Those pistons are the cast stock items, but look closely - there is pitting on them, but they're clean... Those pistons have been wire wheeled clean, so, heads have been off the car. Maybe it pushed a head gasket out?
Just bought the Armor Shield kit with 2 bottles. Probably don't need that much for my G37, but it's an 09 and mint (80k miles always garaged and not even a door ding) so I will load it on there - might coat it twice. Thanks for always providing us with great deals!!

I am Still stuck at this video still waiting for pt.2.. I personally was so excited for the reveal video of you giving the car to your wife but no vid yet haven’t watched the other new vids.
That is a beautiful car. I am quite envious. I bought a brand new LX 5.0 in 1993 with the same color scheme (in & out). I don't have many regrets in life but selling that car is definitely one of them. I think she will love it. Can't wait to see it all cleaned up. As always thanks for the great content.
If that was a white on black notchback I'd be going crazy. So rare
@@lkporter1989 It was a hatch back. I always preferred the black interiors.
I am very old school, almost 80 years old. A paper test at the exhaust would have told you if you had compression problems due to a bad exhaust valve. Did you notice #1 and #3 on the RH cylinder bank had more like 75 psi on the first stroke? Not so much difference from the other six cylinders at 55 psi but tells you that the valves are beginning to leak on six of the cylinders. Lastly I would have put the stethoscope on the turbo bearings. That little bit of play could be a bearing beginning to fail but you won’t know until you listen to it at 25+k spin speed. Really nice car. In 06 bought my wife a 04 Mustang Gobra with the pushrod 5.0. A few mods and it was a great Autobahn car, we were living in Germany, would cruise at 115 mph, the max speed using the cruise control.
Alex, just opened the video and I need to caution you. I’m a fanatic of the coyote engine and the mustangs it’s in. The gen1 coyote is not that good for boost and is a toss up above 600whp. You can fully expect to grenade the block if you’re going to keep it above that unless you rebuild it. I would look into a Gen2. They come with the boss302 heads and valves, hold up to 800 whp normally and 1000 whp with OPG and Timing chain tensioner upgrades. The gen3 is a toss up with the cylinder liners being that of the pre-2017 Voodoo.
Gen 1s are good to 700 before cylinder 7 goes
plenty of people making 1000 on a gen 3 with an unopened engine
@@IBustFatties plenty of people also having the tick bone stock. It’s a hit or miss, and I won’t doubt they can make 1000hp unopened but I’m talking about consistently living at those figures. Also all of the tickers have the bore scoring. It’s the liners that also faulted the pre-17 voodoos
So long as he keeps it at the 5-6psi it's plenty safe with a gen1 so long as he puts good gas in it. The good thing is he can buy a gen2 short block and that along with some fueling mods and a boss intake manifold and he's ready to make a safe 800whp with minimal cash spent. Definitely would need some drag radials and suspension work to make that hook on the street. But since it's for his wife I wouldn't do any of that.
@@Salvaba Every generation coyote has had the infamous tick. The very first twin turbo gen3/10r80 car had a tick and ticked it's way all the way into mid 8's without an issue. The plasma cylinder liners were hit or miss initially and Ford did let some bad blocks slip through. Those aside they've been as stout as the gen2 engines.
Check the VIN and make sure engine and options match up. The insurance thing could be an entry error or because it's heavily modified, the ACV was already low because it's a mustang then add twin turbo's and you lose money due to all of the "unknowns". Most likely an entry error on another mustang
I like how these guys are always like "CASH!", as if the sale wasn't going to be cash in the first place. It's always cash, you don't buy a car at someone's house with a check or credit card.

@@SPEEDFREAK6988 that’s the joke…
It depends by state. In Texas we can total a car and not have to brand the title. The only time the insurance company has to issue a salvage title is when the damage exceeds 100% of the value. So if the insurance company writes 99% of damage, they will total the car but doesn't have to file for a salvage title. Clean titles make more money at salvage sales.
Alex, to my knowledge the brisk plugs are plugs that three valve guys like to use in their mustangs. They are a decent plug, supposedly just as good as NGK but people use them in boosted applications.
Boost and Coyote? NGK plugs from what I know
@@169abr brisk plugs have silver electrodes, boosted guys swear by them and I back it tbh
Rebuilding the turbos is pretty easy and straightforward but you need to mark the nut on the shaft prior to removal so when it goes back together it will still be balanced .. if not send the shaft out to be balanced and that is really the only part that needs to be professionally done.. have taken them apart rebuilt them added different impellers and had balanced and powdercoated them.. really simple to do.
I think those turbo pipes and the hot side spools should be heat-wrapped.
I noticed that too

I just bought a 2018 Honda Accord with the same exact history. Has a total loss on the history but still a clean title and was able to finance it with a credit union. Hope I don’t run into issue when I go to sell it in a year or two
Honestly, I'd love to see a video of you rebuilding the turbos. That'd be some good content.
Never seen a cardfax say “it hit a curb” and I’ve sold cars for 6years. Seems like bullshit.
the total loss could be parts were not available and so they "totaled" the car because they couldn't repair in time, but seems to be carfax mistake.
Could have had all AM suspension parts that were damaged in the loss. Then they swapped it back to all the original parts after retaining salvage from Insurance.
you to can have a mustang as they have made over 13 million since 1964, no trouble getting parts. the horsepower is an issue, because most people can't handle 300 hp let alone 650-1000!

I had an h pipe on my 2020, I’ve got a few little shorts of it on my channel. It was alil raspy though…
Smartest move ever. The coyote is the best v8 out there. This being gen 1 takes a lil more but Gen 2 and 3 can handle 650whp easy. gen 2 and 3 have made as high as 1200whp and ran 7s mustang gt and 8s f150 in the 1/4 mile with no heads no cams no pistons no rods no opening the engine unless you want to go built motor which then you can make up to 2500hp on factory block.. Personally i feel the s550 2015 to present Mustangs with IRS modern touch and modern suspension feel like a space ship compared to any other mustang. But coyote in general you won. Most people are swapping coyotes now instead of LS if they are true car guys because boost and fuel a coyote makes gobs of power. to make the same with a LS you need cam heads pistoms rods and then boost and fuel to make what a yote makes
Plenty of gen 3 hit 800 wheel horse with boost and accompanying fuel system in tune & exhaust
You don't need pistons and rods in LS to handle boost either that's definitely not true both LS and coyote are both good engines the reason people are not Cody swapping the world is because you're not going to pick up a coyote at your local Pick-n-Pull for 150 bucks and that will never happen so that's why LS will definitely win in that sense there was tons more LS engines far cheaper
What is a coyote engine? I know it is a Ford but why is it called this? Thanks.
@@donreinholz8121 because that's the name that Ford chose to call the new modular engine 5.0 liters ...
A little turbo shaft play is normal. More than you'd think. They come that way out of the box. When the engine is started oil pressure builds and fills the cartidge which then takes up that slack and any "play". As long as its not coming into contact with the housing you should be good.

Just bought a 2020 GT that has an accident on the carfax @ 5k miles. I'm no expert but I can't find anything out of place. No paint blend or weird rocker welds and the body panel gap is better than OEM. I'm stoked :)
That title situation is exactly like my 16 GT. It was totaled in 2017, but I bought it back and had it rebuilt for less than half the insurance estimate, saving me $15k vs buying another comparable car. I have $20k in it and the payout was $35k. The repair estimate was only 70% of the value, so it kept the clean title but shows the total loss on the Carfax. That is why CarMax and Carvana only offer me $10k for it! It's been a great car for the past 5 years since the accident.
It was still totaled tho the damage went to 70percent value
Inspired by this video, I told my wife I am getting her a few set of Makita brushless thingy… she asked what that is, I told her every wife in America has them.

Wow, looks like you got a good one there! Hope she likes it. My 1st car was a 1964.5 Mustang that was my Dad’s Mothers car from new in 64.5! She bought it new when she lived in California then she moved in with us in 1968. I took over the car in 1976. Boy was I a lucky new driver. Loved that car. It had the 260 cid motor. That was the 1st year motor before the 298. It also had a transmission that could start in 2nd gear from a dead stop in snow and rain. Which was good for a new driver. That was the year we had a blizzard in Illinois. Rear wheel drive was built he thing back in those days. The only cars with FWD were the Eldorado and a couple other cars Toronado and the Buick Rivera.
I've run into a few cars with weird titles like that also had a similar experience myself so obviously the car had a claim which resulted in total loss and sounds like the previous owner kept driving the car kept it in his name and fixed it hence why it never got issue to salvage title now whether or not it really had damage that seems to be the mystery

Seems like a real nice car. Another one your wife will wanna drag race with! Odd story, but as some others have mentionned, it could have been "totaled" 'cuz the broken parts weren't available at the time, kinda like Hoovie's friend's Jeep which was totalled 'cuz, IIRC, the front axle was on backorder and as such, they couldn't replace it.

Also, assuming he's cooperative, maybe he can enlighten you as to what happened with the accident so you can put that chapter to rest. If interested, message me and I'll get you the info.
I noticed the body was repaired on the left side, before you said the seller mentioned that. But the repair is pretty legit.
stock fuel system with a hellion kit is throwing red flags unless the guy took his injectors and bap. Definitely stock pistons. Probably stock block. Them Gen 1 coyotes are good for like 650ish hp.
Had a 2008 ford focus 2dr/coupe that someone backed into and dented the quarter panel behind the passenger door and put a slight crease in the door sill. Door still functioned and actually sealed better than before. Parts were not available so insurance totalled and offered buyback with clear title since the functionality and safety was not compromised.
Awesome project !
Thanks!
Probably running low boost. Need to take it and get it tuned on a dyno. Probably will insure it’s running safe and you could even pick up some more power if boost can be increased.
A good idea for a video, Alex, could be a collection of cars you went to potentially buy, film the inspection, but back-down from because of too many problems with the car or etc.
If you have footage inspecting other cars you don't buy, it would still be interesting & educational to see that process happen, even if they don't get their own video build journey.

I got the Avalon King kit for my new Telluride. I had a hunch I wouldn't have enough in one bottle and went ahead and got two. I did the whole body, all of the glass, all of the plastic, and the wheels, including the inside of the wheels. I even did everything I could reach under the hood. If you have a mid size suv and you're hitting every square inch - get two. I barely had enough even with two bottles.
For a 13 yr old total loss titled Mustang basic 5.0 with a new MSRP of $30k, I guessed the price was $8k. Oh boy. The US dollar is becoming worthless. :/
I understand the turbo kit. But I literally just bought a 2012 GT with only 9k miles for 17k. That price was too much.
I had a 2014 mustang and my biggest pet peeve was the rear head rests being left up lol
2:28 The California Special package means it comes with every available option. It is all in. Premium Package, Shaker 1000 stereo system. I see you got the automatic which might also give you keyless remote start. Awesome car!
Man she’s a beauty your wife will love it!! Wow those filters where so dirty!! 😯😯 absolutely love the sound of those turbos and coyote!!
You need a Good catch like a UPR catch can with 100 PSI valves with vac for those turbos plus new intake filters and also I would consider dropping some SeaFoam in the tank.
Thats not a catch can, just a fancy breather can from Peterson. Only down fall of that style is you can pick up some crankcase fumes through the HVAC system when stopped. But it won't send any oil into your intake 😉
I sold my GT premium mustang 2014. For 23,000 back in March, it was in great condition small accident where the front bumper was replaced. So I'd say you got yourself a great deal!
Australia that car here costs $49000 up to $85000 what a joke!
Put in NGK 6510 plugs get a tune from Lund or PBD or another reputable mustang tuner.
Run id1000s fuel injectors at the minimum
A nice fuel system. And E85
Don’t fool around with boost a pumps
Right side door gap looks a lil off looks like a bigger gap then the right
In some states (like in MA) there are no salvage title rules for vehicles that are 10 years or older at the time of loss. A total loss kept by the owner and rebuilt would not have a salvage title.
Just an FYI, I know an insurance adjuster and many cars getting declared a total loss is due to an inability to get repair parts in a timely manner and not due to severity of the damage hence the total loss and clean title.
Great deal! $25 grand won’t typically get you much performance unless you buy a C5 Z06 with a few mods/low ownership 😃
I tried going through the comments to see if someone mentioned the oil pump gears. Didn't see it yet, so I'll mention it. Don't forget about them, after seeing the stock injectors they're probably stock as well.
Its cool to hear it hook while going down the road. I would also be checking hidden Vin plates to see if they all match
Take to state highway patrol inspection place for salvage titles and pay em a few hundies to check hidden vins. You can’t watch
Sweet deal, that turbo set up just for parts is 10,000k, Coyote motor with that compression 7k.....thats 17k motor alone. And the auto was from the First Gen Raptor. I am assuming it has some sort of tune for the twin turbo. You might want to put a new tune, so you know perimeters of your tune. And tune will give it a firmer and longer shift points, so you will be in powerband , for coyotes is 4k to 7k. Also probably a 373 rear end gears change. It comes stock with 315 gears🤔...All in all , sweet purchase...mustangs dont need paddle shifting
