As a Ford mechanic when these were new, I always replaced the stator in the distributor along with the tfi module. One went bad the other is soon to follow. Easy job, just mark the rotor, pull the distributor, knock out the gear pin, pull the gear off, replace the stator, repeat, and good to go for another 50,000 miles. Trust me, you want to replace stator.
the other annoying thing, they can have similar symptoms so a dead stator could be diagnosed as a TFI or vise-versa. Change both, done. I do wish Ford stators didn't need the distributor taken apart to change the stator though, makes road-side swapping a bit less practical.
Ford got sued over the bad design of having the distributor placed right by the coolant pipes. Their "fix" is to put a heat shield on it
True story. I got stranded on a bridge in the Bay Area when the stator broke on my ‘87.
I can 100% agree with you, I just went through this whole fiasco with my 89 f150, I feel sorry for the previous owner because they through the entire parts canon at it to no avail thus selling it dirt cheap, I get the truck see how it acts change the whole distributor and that wonderful module bolted to it and surprise surprise truck runs perfect now.
@@19explorersport96 my previous 91 Mark VII died on me while driving. No spark. Thought it was TFI, called a friend and he brought me a spare distributor. Got home, went to spin mine and it was jammed. Magnet fell out of the stator causing the no spark. Rattling around in the trunk the magnet got jammed in something. Put it back together with a new stator and TFI, ran perfect until I wrecked the car.
Your videos in the last 6-8 months have really been great and keep getting better. Recently subscribed and this is now my favorite channel
Thanks man!
Since Max and Peter joined Alex has been more relaxed in the videos, less pressure on him only
Agree, however the earlier videos are absolutely worth to watch. My no1 car channel as well, entertaining and packed with useful tips and infos.
I completely agree! Easily my favorite channel right now.
Been watching for over couple years and you’re right. Better and better and he’s a good person too! Need more food people like him!
There's some dirt above the gas tank that no one will ever see....gets cleaned with glass cleaner and a microfiber.
The windshield is so filthy you can barely see through it.... goes for a test drive without the tiniest swipe of a rag.
Love it! ❤️
Peter has been such a great addition to the channel, really adds the humor and best buds energy to the content. Love his witty sense of humor and positive vibes in every situation.
Yes... peter and max make everything better!
He's as dry as a bone, but that's not such a bad thing
The sound of that Mustang brings back so many memories. When I was a senior in high school, my brother had a black 88 GT. He traveled a lot for work and the deal was, if I had to get up at 4am and take him to the airport, I got the car for the day.
I love this channel because when Alex has help from someone like Peter he still credits them for their ideas and you guys explain things well with humor.
As someone who has always been working on classic cars.. watching the joy followed by the repeated breakdowns is something all too relatable LOL. Thanks for the laughs guys. Keep up the solid work!
I’m so happy that the kid was able to get a great deal on the Mustang and I think it’s really cool seeing you help him out with fixing some of its issues and teaching him some things along the way.It may not seem like a big deal to some people, but they don’t realize that just by you taking a little bit of your time to help someone else out is sometimes enough to help push that person in a direction that they might have never thought they would be able to do before and I think the world could definitely use more people like yourself.
Thanks man!!!
Man I love Peter, the dude has a personality. His humor. Dam!
The Volvo 200 Series (or 240 and 260 Series) was a range of mid-size cars produced by Swedish company Volvo from 1974 until 1993, with more than 2.8 million total units sold worldwide The.Volvo Halifax Assembly Plant was one of the assembly plants used for the assembly the 200 series.
That is 20 years of production of the same car model.
I realy love your videos Alex!
Its nice to see someone actually maintenance these vehicles, instead of just "sending it" Good job guys.
I always enjoy a clean example of any vehicle but the foxbody can be easily built up. gotta love both
You mean maintain?
Good job guys. Next i would remove the rubber on the shifter stick and replace with washers. Then get a brass shifter ball cup. That would improve the feel of your shifts. Replace the steering shaft with a borges unit that gets rid of the rag joint, upgrade the clutch quadrant with a 2 position aluminum quadrant, adjustable clutch cable and sub-frame connectors. That would be a good start to improving the feel of the car. 💪
Shoutout to Max, always a savior for you and Peter! His hard work does not go unrecognized. I’ve been watching for years and I love how much this channel has grown! Perfect crew.
That Fiji Blue Conquest Tsi is making me nostalgic. I owned 13 StarQuests from 1992-2007. I really wish I could find a deal on one like I used to because I usually bought them for about $500-$1000 with a blown headgasket.
Love the energy you guys give off! He’s not your mechanic, he’s your true friend !
This reminds me of my teens and twenties. Couldn't afford newer cars, so we bought older stuff and fixed stuff as we went. No cell phones, but we carried tools in our cars. This was back in the 80s. Enjoyed the video Alex.
Yes back to the 80’s
Can’t beat these videos! Your genuine love for this stuff is apparent and makes watching so entertaining. No normal viewer wants to see unrealistic projects, I hope the channel never strays from every day cars and situations.
peter has that happy energetic face and energy what a great dude to have around
I had a 97 Chevy Blazer and was on a road trip from Philadelphia, to NY, and while on the turnpike doing about 80, I started to loose power, in fact, the harder you hit the pedal the more power you would loose, and the check engine light came on and flashing. while driving I grabbed my trusty OBD-II scanner and managed to get it plugged in. and started to pull the codes, at this point I'm now doing about 50, and still slowing, and decided to reset the codes and see if it helps, well it did, and the truck came back to normal and didn't have the issues the rest of the trip
Love your videos!!! Like 2 years ago I replaced everything to my Mustang GT you are doing to your Mustang. My Mustang was the same exact interior and color as yours. Mine is a 1987 GT, all original all stock Automatic Transmission, 165,000 original miles. I'm the 2nd owner, I bought it in 1996. I replaced everything!!! I also got metal door handles...lol...Runs and drives perfect! Can be driven every day but I drive it on nice days only or a Saturday to work....right now its primed black and ready for paint and some new interior pieces, other than that the car needs nothing else. After Its painted and completely done I might sell it or garage keep it for some time. Thanks again for your videos!
These videos Inspired me to save for a Project car! Keep up the great work.
Love to see how you love them all cars with so much passion and care...and patience, Alex. May the car-gods bless you..
That was one of the most LEGIT Legit Street Car videos ! This are the things that leave us stranded, and very practical to see how you go about fixing them. In the middle of the street !! That was excellent. Greetings from Prague, CZ
Short story to the comment you made about the hammer and fixing the trim while driving.
One time I was driving on 285 (here in ATL) going home from work. I had my window down. So as I go to let it up, it jumps off track. Im like doing maybe 75 mph. I kept letting window up and down and push on it with one hand while using the other hand to steer. I got lucky and was able to get it back on track.
On my obs ford I had the icm go bad it looks just like that one that you changed. Anyway that little part left me stranded at a gas station on a really cold Wisconsin day.
That dirty windshield was killing me but now I understand you were waiting for detail video💪. Great video!!
Yes, the TFI Module on the Distributor left me stranded a good 3 times then 30-60 minutes later back to somewhat normal, there was a Class Action Lawsuit about this problem, get a Remote Heat Sink mounted aluminum block for the TFI Module!
See you at the car show. Keep up the awesome work.
Geez I think of your guys as STARS and I’m appalled no one would stop !
In 1989 I bought a Mustang LX 5.0 and loved it! It was like a sleeper, because it was not a GT, but had the same power and torque as the GT.
You’re going to want to remove that TFI module and apply some electrical grease between the module and the distributor. Otherwise that module will fail soon. Definitely a great video and love this car and content
Alex as a guy who likes boost you will appreciate the fact that 87-92 5.0 Mustangs came from the factory with forged pistons. They went to hypereutectic in 93. So this car has forged pistons in it. 👍🇺🇸
I'm loving this series! I have an 88 GT that I built in high school (25 years ago). I went through this same fuel system replacement scenario a few years ago. Parts are cheap and easy to find.
One of the most impressive things, that you found tires for it! I'm in the middle of a 5 lug conversion because the 15" turbine wheels are nearly impossible to find performance tires for. I'm going to have 2003 brakes, 2003 cobra 17"s with 245/45r17s in the front and 275/40r17s in the back. I just got the wheels back from powder coat. They are 17x9 front and 17x10.5 rear.
The only time I've had to drop a tank was on my 00 Blazer and we did it in the garage at my buddy's where the pump gave up the ghost, no lift... all I remember is it sucked. I don't think I've ever sworn more, which is saying something. Keep bringing the great vids
I had a 1988 Dodge Dynasty LE with3.0 L V-6 the that did something similar It would get warm and then it would die out than it would cool down and it was the ignition coil pack plugs wires fuel filer PCV value. Do not use discount auto parts store fuel pumps get an OEM Motercraft NOS fuel pump.
Driving down the road, the rear seal of the transmission on the dodge van in front of us blew out, we had tranny oil all over our windshield so we both ended up pulling over at the same spot in the road. It just so happens that the van in front of us was going to the same city we were and it was full of girls. So 2 guys my car and 4 girls in van, you can't leave them stranded. It was the middle of the night and well before everyone having a cell phone. And the only tools we had was a vise grip and flat head screwdriver, that was in teh back of their van, we had forgotten to put our toolbox into the car before we left so we were tool less. So I crawled up under the van, saw where the seal had blown out a little, used the screwdriver and vise grip as a hammer to tap the seal back in. We then ran up the road to the next exit, bought a case of tranny oil at the gas station which lucky for us was still open, then came back to the van. Topped off the tranny with oil. The seal leaked but was holding. So we let them know we would follow them, stay a little slower than norm, and if we flash our brights at you, pull over. So every 40 minutes we would have enough tranny oil on the front of our car and we would have them pull over, I would go back under tap the seal back, as it was slowly coming back out, refill with Tranny fluid, and then be back on our way. It took a long time to get home, but we got home they parked their van, one of the girls dads was a mechanic. We exchanged phone numbers, and we have been friends for the last couple of decades, brought together by a blown out rear seal from a weekend road trip to Vegas. Apparently we did something right, the dad said there was no damage to the tranny beyond replacing the seal. Never under estimate the power of hacking something together to get a vehicle home.
"Every coil I've seen go bad, go gradually"
NOPE. I had mine suddenly die in the Pontiac Fiero. It died in the road, and I pushed it into a parking lot while a couple cops in a Crown Vic watched me. I then walked home 2 miles in 90 degree heat. I drove another car to the Fiero, tested the fuel and saw it had no spark, went and bought a coil and installed it in the parking lot.
Alex, just so you know Chris is a really good fiend (yes i dropped the r). Too funny that he drives by and does not stop!
Fix or Repair Daily! Yeah, my number of tools in car increase with car age, except that in the modern Subaru it always gets the lithium jump pack because they don't always charge the battery nowadays. Well, now you know what size socket you gotta order and stick in the glove box.
Nissan Frontier D40 ran from 2005 to 2021, Chevy Express and GMC Savana also running for many as you explained
This series makes me miss my old fox body. In high school I had the same exact car down to the color but no T tops. I bought it from a Mexican mechanic who was getting deported. He had added a secondary in line fuel pump, added a fancy ignition along with some other bits. The most obvious was it had no cats or mufflers. I think it had a cam but I can't confirm that. I used to take it to the drag strip on weekends, raced anything at a red light and basically tokyo drift every corner in 2nd gear. Man that car was a total vibe. The dirty interior had been stripped out, it would shake vigorously at a stop and smelled like fuel. It didn't have a radio because it was so loud you couldn't barely hold a conversation in there. My friends and I hit it a few times on the wall and I hit a tree on the street. Lol. It went thru some fenders and bumpers but the engine and trans we're the real MVPs, they asked for nothing. In the end I was convinced it was just an expensive hobby for me at the time. I do regret letting that car go. I'm excited to see how this turns out.
Not gonna lie this series makes me wanna get a foxbody
I just bought one, and yeah you can tell 32y is a long time lol
@@l.no.solace7209 and they are on the way up
I think this applies to everybody lol
For sure. Makes me miss my ‘86 GT and ‘92 LX notch something fierce.
Do it!
The year was 1978 I was a junior in high school. I had a 1967 Chevy impala two door. I spent the weekend with my girlfriend at her grandmas house in New Hampshire. On the way home the F universal joint boss let go. At that time there were no parts stores or service stations open on Sunday. I had 50 thousand bailing wire in the trunk of my car. I wrapped a few strands through each hole. A three hour trip took 10 hours as we can only go 15 miles an hour. The sucky part we were pulled over three times by the state police. They told us to get off the highway and take the back roads. Pouring rain the entire trip home.
So, I had a winter home in Orlando why not a mustang convertible. Found a '94 GT 5 speed rag top on ebay for $2800 and the nice young couple delivered it to my door from St. Petes. The next day it wouldn't start. Guess what it was! But at least it was the first part I went for. Good video. Thanks for the memories.
To reduce the chance of a spark igniting the fumes from the tank, use a brass punch to loosen the locking tab. Glad everyone is safe and awesome vid AGAIN. You are gonna gain a lot of viewers if you continue foxbody content. Every day I check for the newest one from yoi guys.
No oxygen in the tank. Very low chance of it igniting
This is by far my favourite series on this channel so far! I had an ‘89 5.0 with a manual and it was so much fun!
I love Saturday mornings with LSC !!! ❤️
Ford TFI modules have a special socket/handle that fits the depth and nut size perfectly, worth getting and keeping with a spare TFI in the car. Don't forget to put the correct dialectic grease (white stuff, not the regular clear) between the TFI and distributor. It greatly prolongs the life of the TFI
Definitely put a timing light on there. With 93 octane you should be able to bump base timing up to 12 maybe 14 degrees. It does make a difference. Will be more responsive and have a few more hp.
Yeah but will you be able to afford 93 after the election.
@@unclejoe6811 93 went down around me by about 70 cents
@@edwardstanley8751 after the elections it will go back up, it's a game Washington DC and their crooked wall street buddies pull on the people.
@@edwardstanley8751 still not where it could or should be. The current price drop is to try to gain popularity back.
@@edpoints1127 Ah yes, the tired old schtick of "The president sets the gas prices"...
Great content! I love how you chronicled the whole thing including not having a cell phone. I can see myself doing that. Way to roll with it and magnify the adventure as a flashback to simpler times; hitchhiking and knocking on strangers doors to use their phone. I still miss those days sometimes! You Peter & Max make a GREAT team!! Thank you!
Not a mustang guy, but I like this series. It's so clean underneath, I really hope it is kept in a garage for the winter months, or it will rust out in no time.
I had this exact same problem with a mid 1980’s Crown Vic police interceptor that I bought used at a government auction. Once I was able to properly diagnose it and replace the sock in the tank I had no more problems.
Sock in the tank 🤔
225 Horse and 300 lbft of torque with a probable 2.73 rear felt fast back in the day.Missing my 1988 GT when I watch these videos.Bought new for $13750 back in May of 1988.
Great video. Love the roadside problem solving. Calm, deliberate, good natured problem solving is what the world needs now:-)
No....It’s love love, sweet love, it’s the only thing I’ve been dreaming of, love sweet love.
Dude so impressed by your drive to get sudden problems fixed! I bet your customers love you! Long story short bad luck is everywhere and all times but your crew can turn that around fast, keep up the great work
Gotta love buff Peter always got a big smile on his face
Peter is a great addition to the channel and a top guy 👍👍
Well whenever I worked for my grandfather me and my uncle we were working on a 1949 Dodge pickup we had to take the hood off on one side because it was a clamshell Hood and I was feeding fuel into the carburetor as he was driving it three blocks down the street to get to the shop from where it was in the barn as we were doing that one of the spark plugs came shooting out as I was filling the fuel into the carburetor bowl I had a pair of rubber coated electrical pliers holding the spark plug in the head so yes that was a great way of repairing a car and driving it down the street hanging out the front right side of the windshield
Got a '90 GT. 191k miles. TFI module has stranded me twice. Don't hold a lot of faith in cheap replacements. Pay for good ones! 😉 Great videos!
I love your videos. These Mustang videos in particular have given me an appreciation for the foxbody Mustangs that I never had before.
A tip for the TFI module- put some thermal compound on the back of it between the module and distributor. That'll prolong it by keeping the heat out of it. GMs with HEI ignition with the module in the bottom has the same issue
I was going to say this.
Alot of people are saying replace the whole dizzy internals.
I suspect the heat is what kills the module in the end.
@@stuartd9741 yup heat is the #1 killer. Thermal compound helps so much
You're a real friend... love what you're doing for this kid!!
He's doing it purely because this car brings big views and ad rev to the pocket. It's absolutely nothing to do with helping the young lad out at all.
@@EFFEZE You're a lot more cynical than me. The one who does stuff purely for views is Stradman. Alex is a genuinely good guy.
OK, almost as cool as the Mustang you have resurrected, is the Conquest TSI at 5:30-ish! I used to have an '88. Pain in the ass, but what a rocketship!
Ok man you gotta spill the beans on the starion or conquest I keep seeing in the background!
Keep the videos coming man the chemistry between both of you guys is like a pb&j sandwich soooo good 👍
Alex your videos are great, but Peter makes them so much better!
He's the best!
Love the series of videos. When I was teenager I always wanted a Mustang like this.
The panther platform ran from from 1978-2011 and that its the LTD Crown Victoria Town Car Grand Marquis.
TFI modules are weird little bits, if you didn't, you'll want to put some heat transfer paste between it and the distributor or it's going to have a REALLY short life. In case no one else has mentioned it, there is a way to relocate that TFI module pretty easily. strip back the wiring harness a bit and get the wires that go to it a bit of room and relocate them to a cooler part of the engine bay, and run three wires for the leads that go into the distributor itself. I went to a junk yard and got the heat sink off an F150 and modified it so that you can bolt the older TFI modules onto them. I've done it on one of my Fords, and it's what Ford did with later examples of the windsors in Mustangs and F150s. (If anyone cares for pictures showing how it's done, just shoot me a message)
Been watching your videos for a while but as a previous mustang owner i’ve really enjoyed this series. Love the channel, hope you keep wrenching on cars like this for the average person unlike other car UA-camrs that with a bit of success end up buying exotics.
Peter must have been a CUTE kid ...
.. he has that “I’m a cute kid” pose down perfect. Can you see him 4 years old stand in that pose .. I’m a cute kid!
Just recently subscribed to your channel man. Love watching these “first start and drive” videos. Been binge watching all your videos the past week
Just found the channel and subscribed. I re wired the tfi module on my 89 and mounted it next to the airbox because they don't like heat lol. Never had a problem since. I love the content and look forward to more.
I am so nostalgic now... I miss my '84 and '87 5.0's. So much fun!
I love your videos Alex! Me and my 2 year old son love watching your videos on Saturday mornings!
Wow. this is cetainly bringing back memories. Would love to find a foxbody to toss around again. They are slow by today's standards but could easily be modded into 10 sec cars without touching the block. Super light too for a car with that amount of torque.
I really miss my Foxbody, so much fun to drive. It was stolen in 2005 and hopefully it's on a racetrack somewhere tearing it up. Was never able to find a basket case to replace it. Goodtimes!
This is the best Mustang channel on UA-cam! keep up the good work!
When do we get a video on the Fiji 88 conquest @5:50 !?!?! I just got a buddies running after sitting for 20 years.
Past 2 videos I’ve thought
“nice, finally get to see what that paint is lookin like, and how far a resto detail will take this thing.”
But sadly, nope haha then the ending was such a tease 😂😩 I already know this foxbody is going to make such a massive turnaround after that initial scrub clean/sand/buff/&polish
First start of a 90s Audi rally car I just bought! ua-cam.com/video/u1NNPvP9Bww/v-deo.html
hey when it does that hop out and pour cold water on the ign module. they fail from lack of cooling noone puts new heat transfer compound on the back of it like it has from factory.
Alex is Peter now full time LegitStreetCars/Quarters also? Great addition if so
what an awesome find love that fox body style looks great still ttop is a bonus and manual ohh man
I love how Alex buys cars and actually fixes them instead of buying ten cars and fixing none of them. 😁
Facts them UA-camrs that start a project and never finishes them get boring
Really enjoying this series and looking forward to seeing what's under all that dirt. Your videos are just getting better and better.
Also, what was the rust converter you used, I could really use that at the moment
Kbs rust blaster
@@Aiurasensei Thanks
I cant wait to see this car washed and polished up driving good and doing burnouts.
I'm so hyped for the detail video. It's gonna look so nice
I would have stopped for Alex. You just gotta be in the Spanish Fork, UT area.
I can’t wait to see what you guys do with the paint and interior detail work 👍
These last videos makes me wanna see you guys do some performance mod videos with this. Dyno as is, then bolt-ons, then heads and cam. E85 and turbo at the end. Would be an awesome series to see what a stock fox can go to
Change the rear end to 3:50 and weld in some subframe connectors. Then add a triangular strut tower brace. A cold air intake kit with larger throttle body and that little Mustang will put you back in the seat.
I had a 88 Comanche that acted the same way with the over a certain rpm issue tested the coil and came back good replaced a load of parts with no change came out to be the coil had a crack in the bottom of it and when it got hot caused spark issues
I had an 88 GT when I was 16. Thanks for this video series. Brings back a ton of fantastic memories.
What's the last car to breakdown on you and how'd you fix it?
My POS 2jz Lexus that had a blown head gasket. 20 gallons of distilled water to get from Virginia Beach to upstate NY
Last time I drove a Ford or BMW.
The last car that died on me well my mom I was with her our car died right at O'Reilly's Auto Parts I went and bought some intake cleaner and fixed it still have a crankcase pressure problem where exhaust is coming out of the oil tube and oil fill cap
My cousin's chevy 1500 wouldnt start and we couldnt hear the fuel pump running. We checked fuses, all good. The truck just rolled 300k miles and i kinda feel bad cause we cut a hole in the bed instead of dropping the tank...ouch
Just a dead battery, used a battery charger to fix it
Common Ford problems even when they were relatively new. Good idea to replace the old stuff anyway.
As a blue collar worker there's nothing more satisfying then a good old challenge to go faster lol
Huge CONGRATS on 750K subs! Well deserved! #roadtoamillion
