Great tips! With your inspiring videos I painted 2 houses using all your supply and tools, even bought sprayer. I have nothing left to paint, but after watching your video I may try to paint one wall that has some issues; I will try to hide them first. Thanks again! I am watching just because I like your videos, I always learn something new. I amazed by how professional and skilled You are! You are awesome teachers! I am math teacher so I appreciate all the details that you pay attention to and how you explain everything in your videos. Awesome work!
Been painting extremely high end jobs in the San Francisco bay area for over 25 years. I feather my cut ins and never had a halo or any texture differences. I notice guys from the midwest always brush and roll their cut ins, but we always have to show them what I'm talking about. Also on a wall like this, I would apply slightly too much paint quickly and fairly evenly with a roller. Right as (or just before) it sets up I go back over it without adding more paint. This is where I make all my clean strokes, even out the paint and ensure no flashing. We call this "knock down" Do it right and you get little to no stipple like it was sprayed These techniques involve some subtle nuances and take a minute to perfect, but you ever have a picky client who is bothered by roller stipple (yes, those people actually exist all over California) you'll need this technique or a sprayer Love the channel, thanks for all the great content
@@Idahopainter Been using a bunch of little tricks I've learned from your channel and spreading them around, always tell other painters about you. Thanks for all your great work. Keep it up
I'm 40 years journeyman painter and have painted in the west, the Midwest and south. A standard 3-inch perdy will handle all that cutting with no problem. I don't get the little roller thing, all that calking and tape.
Your timing is perfect...I am chosing a color for an accent wall in my kitchen...and I hate to lines that aren't sharp...So Now I know how.! Thank you...I am looking at all the Greens of 2022...starting with Sherwin Williams...
Grreeeeeeat commentary during the entire video! I am doing a accent wall tomorrow and this is my first time painting. The details you shared has me feeling more confident 😃😃 I will try to share my result! Lol Thaaaanks a mil for sharing so many tips.
Great video. Simple, through and straight to the point. Also, addressing minor adversities like falling behind 20” on the ceiling cut because you were caulking the baseboard. 💩 happens and there’s no need to panic. Wall turned out nice. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Chris, always looking for ways to improve my skills. I used your caulking tip from an earlier video in a bathroom around the shower enclosure and counter top/back splash and the results were amazing! Also like that you showcase products/definitely would like to try the Tower Eccelerator, there's been many times where I last minute caulked and that product would have left a much better result.
How long would you recommend to wait before applying your second coat of paint? Also, thank you for sharing your knowledge. It is such a huge help for someone like me.
Hi Chris. Thanks for your videos! I'm in Australia and just started painting the inside of my entire house, starting with a very dark purple accent wall in our living area. Really large wall, going up to a peaked height of almost 15 feet. I tried really hard to do a good job, but failed. I did two coats of cutting in and took the tape off after it all dried, so there was some bleeding. This will be fixed when I get back to this room and do the other walls. The big problem is that after being really careful to load up the roller and paint a nice, thick but even coat (fourth coat!!), and then gently laying off top to bottom, I can see see stripes after it's dried. SO frustrating!! I have a good quality roller sleeve at 15mm nap and the finish is good - no ridges or uneven spots, etc .. just those stripes. Any further tips or tricks to fix it? I'm planning on a light sand then another light coat, this time in a flat/matte version of the paint (rather than the low sheen I used). I used Dulux Wash & Wear paint. Thank you!
Nice clean edges!! Great work. It must be stressful trying to record the video and dictate the workflows for the tutorial while simultaneously keeping an eye on the paint's drying progress, wow! I couldn't do it. I really appreciate this video and have subscribed to the channel for further learning. Thank you!!!!
I’m going to ask a stupid question since I pained my first wall yesterday BEFORE I saw this video 🤦🏾♀️! Do you have any videos on how to fix these errors; paint bleed/lines not crisp/blue seeped over to white part? Excellent Videos
Hi guys I painter for almost 15 years and always use the brushes for do the cut lines the same you did in the ceiling is more Pro, faster and less materials is my opinion 😉 good video👍
1) If doing the wall alone, would you recommend adding a paint extender on these darker colors (if so, would you add this just to the paint used to cut-in or all of it?); 2) Regarding dry time and a wet edge: I imagine you've used Marquee/Dynasty from Behr. I dread when a client buys or requests these. It certainly is a one-coat paint, but I find it impossible to lay it out and paint to a wet edge because it gets tacky so quickly even with an extender. Any recommendations for these paints?; 3) Thank you for sharing your wisdom and experience. It has been crucial in helping me hone my skills from DIY to Professional and start my painting business in the last year.
Hey Chris, I just went back to an older video where you're spraying ceilings and were looking for a good quality ceiling paint. Did you find anything you like yet?
@@zabzinski Cool, I did use Shirwin Williams ceiling paint on my remodel last summer but it was a brush and roll application. It performed well but spraying is what I'll be doing in a lot of situations.
What kind of 4 inch roller do you use? I've never seen one up where I'm from like that, it's pretty big and squar if that makes sense, I've seen it every time you back roll, what brand is it?
Hi Chris, I enjoy your videos. My question is: your cut-in line at the baseboard looks straight as an arrow but the cut-in at the ceiling looks a bit uneven. Is it my eyes, the video or is it uneven?
So if doing this alone, i.e. if I didn't have someone following me after the cut ins, how far should I cut in before I stop and roll? Or do I cut it all in then go for the roll of the walls?
Hi! I've painted many rooms, in places that I've lived, or relative's, but 99% of the time I painted alone. Usually I did 2 coats of cutting, then rolled. So yes, I usually got 'halos', but that was because if I tried to 'cut+roll', the paint ALWAYS started to 'scab' in the tray! Can't win! So, I'm about to do an accent wall/hallway in my new place. You told me to use flat. I was really trying to decide the sheen. I guess that would leave less stroke marks and halo-ing too? I just don't see how I can get around my other problems though-pulling tape off while wet, halos, rolling while cutting is wet...
Cut, roll, cut, roll…that’s how a painter is supposed to do it…you don’t need to caulk your corners just use yellow frog tape….it’s meant for that reason. We only tape caulk our baseboards and our door frames….
Actually no it was duration sherwin Williams. Happened to have yellow transparent base color which made the old color bleed through. The color was garden green.
Hey Chris do you know anybody out in Chandler Arizona that paints that I can go about making money I have my LLC and I have general liability insurance but I don’t know The next steps
I did painting with someone that was doing it for 25 years and I worked with him for five but he moved out to Texas so now I’m just on my own have a LLC open with five years experience and just stuck
This is one way to do it. For me it’s way too many steps that have to happen way to close together. Unrealistic to caulk, cut and roll all at the same time. If you did this process on a whole house, it would take forever!!
Also, instead of using caulk for the lines on the side, Put a coat of the other wall color over your tape edge so anything that bleeds through will be the right color and it will seal the edge just like caulk will. Then put your accent color over the top
He's also probably trying to keep a deliberate pace not to get too far ahead of the cut-ins. You have to slow things down when doing an informative video.
That top cut is bad, masking the heater is good but using that tape is a waste at twenty-five dollars a roll!! A pro painter would cut that wall in no time flat without all that tapeing and calking around the wall and last but not least tape is for protection not to be painted on!!!!!!!!
