As someone who has painted many cars, on anything semi-gloss or higher, every time you let go of the trigger you need to start spraying outside your area so it is already flowing by the time the paint stream comes in contact with the piece being sprayed. It prevents imperfections which show up in high gloss paints.
Thank you chris and your team. I bought a sprayer a year ago after watching your videos. I spray the trim and doors on my rentals now and it makes the job so much faster and better. I have a question. Does it create a problem when painting the walls with the semi gloss over spray on the walls. Does it have to be sanded or primed before the walls can be painted? I assume it is much easier to cut in a nice line with the molding being painted first. Great job!! Thank you for taking the time to make the videos.
@@matthewaguirre9206 you have tear out on the drywall. I have found that a better controlled technique with less over spray plus and flat palm sander and sanding sponge after to scuff it well. It can be cut in in two coats though but even a quick 3 cuts for me if necessary is better than all that masking and failure and respackling then touching up again lol
I recommend door stackers for spraying doors if you have more than a few to paint. Takes a little setting up but we've found them extremely good. Can flip the doors and paint both sides. Nothing up against the wall. All stacked nicely to the side while drying. Best part is if you put the paint on a little thick, the paint won't start sagging.
We use door brackets that screw into tops of doors. Standing them up in the middle of a room connected together at a right angle from each other. Able to spray both sides without touching the door, and spray all doors at same time. From prime to finish. Only way to go if doing more than a single door.

Do you think the way they do it by installing and then spraying is the way to go or do you think spraying trim before install is easier? I'm about to start my own large trim job and trying to decide which way to go.
Amazing work. I don't know how you all are keeping the atomized paint from settling on things all throughout the house. I see that you have a lot taped/bagged off, but at one point you were spraying trim next to what appeared to be a wood door. Was the atomized paint under tight control, or did you have plans to repaint that brown door, and you didn't care about contamination?
Looked like that was the front door and it was caulked n preped for paint. I'm guessing it needs to be primed still before putting final coat on so he didn't spray it in the video. Which the priming is normally done already before finish coat but he may not have done it yet for video or timing purposes. Who knows.
On Smooth Wall and imperfect Smooth Wall I try not to spray doors on the walls seem to flash an orange peel or knockdown I never have any problem must be nice to have some painters that want to work can't find them in Sacramento keep up the good work happy painting trails
My favorite part was the very end when he was explaining to the other guy how to paint the window, I get drips in 1 place when I’m spraying... the corners, learned a few things, my next job will be better
I can see Christy does a few things like I do, ie door checks first then panels clip the trigger on each stricken to prevent over coating on changing direction and paint frame sequencing as I would with a brush
Yea. I'm more concerned about the outlines in the wall around the doors you sprayed them against. I always stand them up like you did in the second scene.
How do you prevent from drips.. just started using a sprayer for baseboards, trim and doors. For some reason I can get a first coat on but have to go back n roll the drips, let paint dry then brush final coat.
Great Vid! With the overspray on the walls...How to you avoid flashing once the final coat is put on? Ive got new construction walls and am wondering if I'll have problems with flashing if I spray my doors and trim this way. Thanks for your thoughts.
Thank you for your info. Just started warching your videos from New Zealand. Looking for your online shop for that cardboard holder & tips cleaner tin. Oopps, just found it, Im learning at 90MPH Would be nice to hear when you squeeze trigger by saying.. On... Off, On... Off so I can see Exactly where your cut off spraying point is. Thank you
I'm sure the results were amazing. Great job! I'm pretty sure I haven't ever had a job that didn't have a mistake of some kind. That's what touch up is for. Just saying. 👍
I have always brushed out the trim, I sprayed the trim on a job last spring and that was a game changer. The results were amazing. I'm noticing you guys spray the crap out of the trim, no problems with runs?
Johnny Montana just because it's a smaller tip doesn't mean he won't have runs. I bet you he had a couple of runs. He sprayed pretty heavy and sometimes paint just doesn't want to hang right. He has very good technique. I just like spraying my trim with 2 light coats so I know there isn't any runs or sags. The only bummer about spraying is having to touch up. If you have to touch up you can't use a brush or roller because it will flash.
what would you suggest as an all around spray rig for a home owner that has a couple of rental houses for interior painting between renters. thanks and love your videos. Keep it up
A bit much rist movement, keep the gun facing straight on and equal distance away from what you're painting as you spray it. Start moving the gun ever so slightly before you pull trigger and keep it moving after you let off trigger to prevent any build up or lap marks. Not a critique, just proper technique.
I was kinda amazed to not see the finger feather technique on the doors. You can minimize overspray by letting off the trigger as you hit the end of your piece, but you need to remove the extension. A 515 tip is a bit more efficient as a commenter stated earlier. My back hurts just thinking about the extra times I would need to bend over with the 300 series tip.
I use a 510 on doors. Way fewer times up and down. But then after 45 years of painting I’m always looking for ways to make my body last another 45 years. Plus I don’t use an extension on trim due to spits.
Hi Chris, good skills. What you do with a walls after you spray trim and getting lots off material on the walls a specially perimeter of the trim around walls, I think it will show up, unless you back rolling immediately overspray on the walls. Would like to hear from you . Thanks Wasco!
I tilt my doors at a bit of an angle and keep them spaced apart so overspray doesn’t affect the finish. I also spray the heel and toe before I shoot the whole door. Technique could be improved with 2 of the guys. But I agree that trim looks better when you’re able to spray it as opposed to brushing ( in some instances) Also think the pressure should’ve been lower seemed a bit too high for me. Def seemed like the high pressure could’ve caused some overspray on your finished ceilings. Being a painter we are all particular to how we do things. Great video though love the gear #painterslife
I have panted 5 aircraft (not all done at the same tine - over 5 years), using a Wagner airless. I had an arm like a gorilla when finished. It does a good job, once you know the limitations, like when it is about to go 'dry' to avoid sputtering.
I appreciate all of your videos but have a question for you. I always put paper around my trim and plastic behind the doors if they are on a wall. The reason I do this is because when you paint the walls with flat paint, the sheen shows through the flat paint, even with primer. What do you do about that? If you have a trick, I'd like to know because it would save me a lot of prep time. I also would cover that front natural wood door to protect from paint dust. Maybe I'm a little too OCD.
I would have to go to a mental hospital having to cover everything. I do new construction homes. When I spray my trim, I don't have to cover anything. I don't have to worry about the floors....nothing.
What about overspray? I’m not a painter so I really don’t know much about this. I see they have some stuff protected but what about the dust/powder that comes from the spraying? Wouldn’t that still get everywhere?
I'm definitely going to take a spraying it's so much easier than painting with a brush and roller I barely earn a living off painting and have to regularly work a 12 hour shift ..
Used an airless sprayer today for the first time and I want to know how you prevent so much overspray in the air. The room i was spraying was clouded out within minutes. I was covered in paint specs and if I didnt shut a door the whole house (empty) slowly filled with overspray dust. So what's the trick? I had the paint flow down to almost minimum as well. Thank!
If I'm painting for a home owner's job who opens that door every day... the hardware comes off. If it's a rental, a lease or a resale, it stays on. Sorry renters, leasers, buyers... time is $$.
Chris, long time fan of your videos man, keep up the great work. I'm about to paint my whole house after a pretty lengthy remodel. What are some tips for one-coating trim heavy like you guys are doing without drips?
Haa! I didn’t even notice that it was him until I read crazy masina’s comment. He still looks good considering he’s not using his body as a profession anymore. Good for you John!
Get rid of the wand and get an adjustable spray pole..u will save on clean up time.. plus I spray my window sills first as all the overspray will melt into the sill..it also eliminates runs/sags on the lower trim..
Runs and sags are caused from 4 things: sprayer pressure is set to high, not the right tip for finish work, to much over lap, and hand stalls, learn how to adjust the pressure on your sprayer, use correct tip, watch the fan overlap, watch for any pause time, move move move. I don't understand why they use the tip they do in this vid, Size 210 fine finish is the way to go. And listening to their pump the pressure ajustment is on the highest setting. The orange peal has to to be outrageous.
I have been using the air pressure spraying gun for 16 years with fine painting. They do a good job but there were some corners they didn't cover well with paints especially when they don't take the right position flipping your whole back backward! I noticed that guy sprayed the masked glass window while doing so! But still good job!
one of the things I tell my new guys when they learn spraying is that less is more you need practice to learn not to overload a few light passes is better than one overloaded pass...
Hi from france! Have you ever expérience thé clean shot valve from graco tout avoid spits. I ve used it for quite some time now ans it really works .rgds ben
Best $100 I ever spent for paint accessories. Especially when you need 40"+ extension. Then it's a must. I use it with no extension. I got so used to it when I sprayed a gun without it, it seemed like the normal 'in gun' needle reacts SO slow when the trigger is released.
Everyone who ever completed a whole painting job thinks he knows everything and is probably the best painter ever. Has no idea how much they could and have to learn. Critiquing these pro's while having no details about the job they are doing. PUH-THET-IC.
That's a good point, lol Don't ever open yourself to critisism (sp) I think you guys are doing a great job anyway However don't let OSHA catch the guys spraying with those beards and without "spray socks" over those pumpkins
A mobile custom made plank would be a great help to you (step over if need be height) Great painting advice, solid experience I can see that makes a real tradesman...
Two questions please. Did the trim require two coats? If so, do you have to take the masking off the window's first coat while wet,and have to mask the window a second time? Thanks
Painter number 3 did the smoothest application, he stayed on center with the spray pattern, bending his body and not his arm. Prep fell short, more masking, especially a chandelier which cannot be cleaned if fouled by over spray, also, why are the switches and receptacles not taped? They are a pain to clean. Where's the General? Why isn't he up your ass on this?
I like these guys, and I'm pleased to see I guess I'm doing it similarly. I was told by an automotive painter to quite flourishing/flaring at the end of my stroke and keep the spray pattern perpendicular to the surface for an even spread. I find it difficult, but I'm retraining.
Talk about over spray on the already sprayed mil work it will end up rough and not smooth and i noticed the ceiling was already rolled also and u sprayed the doors that got over spray on the ceiling abunch off rookie mistakes
@@Idahopainter What do you mean assumptions? Did you even read what he said? The evidence of his complaint is in your video, you hit the finished baseboard behind the doors with overspray. That makes a rough finish that has to be sanded.
Always do the part that is the face or focal point last on every scenario here. For ppl watching you want that area done last so there’s a nice smooth even finish and no overspray onto the face after you done the face. For ppl just starting it takes a little practice holding the trigger nonstop because if you don’t stay moving you will overload an area and get runs. I personally don’t do a constant trigger on many things and it’s truly not necessary and there is a risk of overload. When that one guy gets back to spraying the baseboard he’s already blasted that corner 2x3 times and will do it again on the next wall base board. A lot of this stuff is how you are trained and what you feel comfortable doing and mastering that. Just like anything-some ppl cut in walls or paint windows different-we had a guy that could beat anyone in painting windows and I’m talking old style windows with the glazing on Victorian homes without taping -the guy was a crackhead and could do 3-4 windows in the time a great painter could do 1-1.5 windows and they were done perfect but it was his own style. Problem was you’d pay him and not see him for 4 days bcuz of crack. My 10 yr old son types 225 words per minute with 100% accuracy and it’s his own weird style-the teachers tried to fail him because he wouldn’t do it the normal way. So i freaked out and said if you can find any adult or kid in this school or the high school that can beat him I’ll give you $5000. No one was close. Then i checked and the world record was only like 240 which by now he probably is close but they tried to fail him in typing computer class - totally ridiculous -Point is-pick a way and master it.
Learning how to use a "spray shield" the right way eliminates all that over spray. You are using a production spraying method. You are over spraying the finished ceilings?
You are being a critic without even understanding the situation we were in. Do you realize you were not ever there talking with the customer or understanding anything we were trying to accomplish?
Oh yeah I have been in every situation you can imagine, Some would even make your skin crawl and hair stand on end I am 57 so there hasn't been too much that I haven't seen LOL
Yeah I agree I get that a lot, However I break alot of guys from some old bad habits and make their jobs easier and more efficient which saves me money and gets me a higher bottom line This "extra savings" gets passed on to the employees as bonuses, So I actually make a game of it on who can save the company the most money How do you do it? (I love giving out bonuses )
Question on paint process. On new construction all my doors are kerfed (no trim) and baseboard is going in after the tile. I will paint ceiling and walls before tile and kitchen installed. But is it worth it to tape off and mask walls and floors just to spray baseboards? Or should i spray baseboards on saw horses, then cut and shoot them in with simple brush touch up? Thanks in advance for answers. Great video on spray technique!
As someone who has painted many cars, on anything semi-gloss or higher, every time you let go of the trigger you need to start spraying outside your area so it is already flowing by the time the paint stream comes in contact with the piece being sprayed. The unique problem is than u need to cutting with the color wall 2 or 3 times bcz the semigloss is hard to cover it up than u waste more time...
If you cut it in the use a mini roller right behind you will have no issues . Also flat or matte will solve issue as well
Its gonna be visible the spray underneath the roller paint

Who knows.
I'd definitely cover that Chandelier though. Prbly was a pain to clean. There has to be some over spray dusting on it with that amount of spraying.
On Smooth Wall and imperfect Smooth Wall I try not to spray doors on the walls seem to flash an orange peel or knockdown I never have any problem must be nice to have some painters that want to work can't find them in Sacramento keep up the good work happy painting trails
It's good to see proper decorators wearing white overalls ;)
My favorite part was the very end when he was explaining to the other guy how to paint the window, I get drips in 1 place when I’m spraying... the corners, learned a few things, my next job will be better
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
Great job Chris 👍🇺🇸
What sort of paint do you use for wood work to finish in the airless sprayer
normally people prefer semi gloss or satin finish on wood work
If its not prefinished it needs primer first exterior or interior satin or semigloss interior usually and a solid body stain exterior or superpaint
I can see Christy does a few things like I do, ie door checks first then panels clip the trigger on each stricken to prevent over coating on changing direction and paint frame sequencing as I would with a brush
Yea. I'm more concerned about the outlines in the wall around the doors you sprayed them against. I always stand them up like you did in the second scene.
i was thinking the same thing
Also what about the semi gloss paint on walls? Maybe I'm wrong but I thought you couldn't paint flat over gloss for adhesion problems!
Yeah it'll take at least one and a half minutes to roll a first coat on that wall
How do you prevent from drips.. just started using a sprayer for baseboards, trim and doors. For some reason I can get a first coat on but have to go back n roll the drips, let paint dry then brush final coat.
I liked the way Chrissie sprayed the door and other frames more controlling and took more relaxing position!
Great Vid! With the overspray on the walls...How to you avoid flashing once the final coat is put on? Ive got new construction walls and am wondering if I'll have problems with flashing if I spray my doors and trim this way. Thanks for your thoughts.
Hello, very instructive video, lots of details ...

Thank you for your info.
Just started warching your videos from New Zealand.
Looking for your online shop for that cardboard holder & tips cleaner tin.
Oopps, just found it, Im learning at 90MPH
Would be nice to hear when you squeeze trigger by saying.. On... Off, On... Off so I can see Exactly where your cut off spraying point is.
Thank you
👍
I'm sure the results were amazing. Great job! I'm pretty sure I haven't ever had a job that didn't have a mistake of some kind. That's what touch up is for. Just saying. 👍
Awesome video guys! Your pointers are excellent. Thank you for putting together these videos, I really look forward to them!
Thanks for the support Mike!
How does the trim paint on the wall effect the wall texture and look of the future wall color?
MrMnchstr none st all in most cases. As long as the paint isn't a high gloss you shouldn't notice much if anything with the proper cutting in.
MrMnchstr none at all, unless the paint is super heavy
Okey dokey then.
makemeajmod if the trim paint is SW satin and the wall paint is Matte, will the satin not show thru?
You'll mostly be brushing and rolling the walls so you'll get a stippled texture. I've never ran into any problems
How would you protect carpet against trim and be able to get to bottom of trim? Please help!!
I have always brushed out the trim, I sprayed the trim on a job last spring and that was a game changer. The results were amazing. I'm noticing you guys spray the crap out of the trim, no problems with runs?
marcelguarachi they’re using a small tip size easy to get away with it without heavy spots
If you have to touch up you can't use a brush or roller because it will flash.
only use the green Graco tips on trim.... they're amazing!
One tip that helps avoid paint running is crank up the heater.
Great video. They are always fun and informative. Excellent! Rock on Chris!
what would you suggest as an all around spray rig for a home owner that has a couple of rental houses for interior painting between renters. thanks and love your videos. Keep it up

At 5:46 he paints to door trims but never see him paint the trim that is inside the rooms? When do you paint that part?
A bit much rist movement, keep the gun facing straight on and equal distance away from what you're painting as you spray it. Start moving the gun ever so slightly before you pull trigger and keep it moving after you let off trigger to prevent any build up or lap marks. Not a critique, just proper technique.
Awesome, thanks for sharing Audy!
No matter how I feather it, I have way too much splatter when I stop the spray. I'll try this technique.
I use a 510 on doors. Way fewer times up and down. But then after 45 years of painting I’m always looking for ways to make my body last another 45 years.
Plus I don’t use an extension on trim due to spits.
What about all of the semi gloss over spray on the walls and ceiling? Will that be easy to cover with satin or eggshell later?
John y’all still using solo? And if so what sheen? Trim and doors looked great!!
you make it look soo easy. how do you paint the walls afterwards?? brush and roller or tape up the doors and spray the walls as well??
Definitely got over spray all over the lids, chandeliers, light fixtures, everything that wasn't masked.
So true
Hi Chris, good skills.
What you do with a walls after you spray trim and getting lots off material on the walls a specially perimeter of the trim around walls, I think it will show up, unless you back rolling immediately overspray on the walls.
Would like to hear from you . Thanks Wasco!
It’s never an issue for us
👍
I tilt my doors at a bit of an angle and keep them spaced apart so overspray doesn’t affect the finish. I also spray the heel and toe before I shoot the whole door. Technique could be improved with 2 of the guys. But I agree that trim looks better when you’re able to spray it as opposed to brushing ( in some instances) Also think the pressure should’ve been lower seemed a bit too high for me. Def seemed like the high pressure could’ve caused some overspray on your finished ceilings. Being a painter we are all particular to how we do things. Great video though love the gear #painterslife
I think when he ask if we see the mistake when spraying the doors. I believe that what he was referring to. They (doors) were to Close together
John paints like a robot. He got skilz!
Awesome video too. I am still trying to master the roller but love watching you guy use the sprayer. OUT!
CottnMouthKilla NC Hamilton 4 inch green medium pile for doors 👌🏼
Its almost like a ballet with paint! I think i'm a little old and out of shape to do those moves. They sure make it look easy!
If those pink filters are 3M P100s be careful because those are not rated for paint. Switch over to the white cartridges.
Thanks for the tip, much appreciated!
I thought it was a preference to get high off the material. It does filter particulates, but that's all.
Chris you lied "You tought us". We're a whole community out here. 👏🏻👏🏻
I have panted 5 aircraft (not all done at the same tine - over 5 years), using a Wagner airless. I had an arm like a gorilla when finished. It does a good job, once you know the limitations, like when it is about to go 'dry' to avoid sputtering.
Yes, thanks for sharing and watching Paul!
What I do is a light sand on those overspray on walls
I would have to go to a mental hospital having to cover everything. I do new construction homes. When I spray my trim, I don't have to cover anything. I don't have to worry about the floors....nothing.
What about overspray? I’m not a painter so I really don’t know much about this. I see they have some stuff protected but what about the dust/powder that comes from the spraying? Wouldn’t that still get everywhere?
I'm definitely going to take a spraying it's so much easier than painting with a brush and roller I barely earn a living off painting and have to regularly work a 12 hour shift ..
So many awesome videos from these Paint Life guys! I've learned a lot in such a short amount of time. Thanks!
Thank!

@@Idahopainter brother i know that you know, your videos and your business are so solid keep em coming!
Looks good. In the prpcess of starting my own paint business. Have the same machine hope it holds up. Keep up the good work
Thanks for watching!
You're the best teacher! Thank you so much
Great job, but take the handles off if you remove them from jam,, it's killin me 😂
Yup. If you gonna take that kinda time ,take off the knobs putem ina bucket🤣
@John Sickler I agree with John popping the door off the hinges is fast compared to taping everything surrounding it.
John Sickler often the hardware will move or if you would want to change the hardware, it’s better to have the surface under match
If I'm painting for a home owner's job who opens that door every day... the hardware comes off. If it's a rental, a lease or a resale, it stays on. Sorry renters, leasers, buyers... time is $$.
Cam you please show how many runs you guys had on the trims
We did not have runs
Never seen a “professional” spray doors without removing handles ...and get them off the walls with sticks. Paint buildup will be noticeable. Hacks.
I’m not a painter . Doesn’t the over spray of the walls not effect the wall finish when you put a water based paint on the wall?
Awesome, thanks for the tips Jeremy!
Lmao, I fishing know John Cena did home improvement videos.

I was confused when video first started haha Jonh Cena’s lil bro!

one of the things I tell my new guys when they learn spraying is that less is more you need practice to learn not to overload a few light passes is better than one overloaded pass...
Nice

So this is the follow up video on 3 guys one door? I am not disappointed.😲👍🏿
What mistakes did you see when painting the first three doors?
Almost all of them
A mobile custom made plank would be a great help to you (step over if need be height)
Great painting advice, solid experience I can see that makes a real tradesman...
That is right way to spray keeping it perpendicular to the surface(as much as you can) and to let go after each stroke they weren’t lying to you.
Talk about over spray on the already sprayed mil work it will end up rough and not smooth and i noticed the ceiling was already rolled also and u sprayed the doors that got over spray on the ceiling abunch off rookie mistakes
A lot of assumptions you make!
@@Idahopainter What do you mean assumptions? Did you even read what he said? The evidence of his complaint is in your video, you hit the finished baseboard behind the doors with overspray. That makes a rough finish that has to be sanded.
@@Idahopainter did you eat paint chips as a kid?
@@Idahopainter LOL, these rookies don't like how you're doing so well. Keep doing what you do!
Arthur Morehead some people just think they know everything and you’re one of them think your way is the right way and only way to do things.

Right every video I watch there is always something there doing wrong
Question on paint process. On new construction all my doors are kerfed (no trim) and baseboard is going in after the tile. I will paint ceiling and walls before tile and kitchen installed. But is it worth it to tape off and mask walls and floors just to spray baseboards? Or should i spray baseboards on saw horses, then cut and shoot them in with simple brush touch up?
Thanks in advance for answers. Great video on spray technique!
