I hired a handyman referred by my realtor to paint a nursery with an accent wall (navy and the rest are a light blue grey). He did awful work on the entire room but the corners of the accent wall were the worst. I followed your instructions on this video to a “T” and my wife and I almost fell over on how clean the lines were. Salute! Spencer Colgan! You save my project.
i dont mean to be so off topic but does someone know of a way to log back into an instagram account..? I stupidly forgot my account password. I would appreciate any help you can give me!
Oh my gosh! It worked! Thank you Spencer for the detailed video. It really helped to read other people's questions and Spencer's replies. Also, it really helped to have materials ready to go after caulking so you can quickly paint with the brush and the mini roller. My new favorite word is COPIOUSLY😅 Thanks again!
Spencer, please add to your descriptions (on all videos showing this method) the exact product you were using for the caulking. Some of the other clear paintable caulking products result in paint not sticking to them. It pulls back, no matter how many times you re-coat. Your method works perfectly, as long as we use the right product, so please notify everyone by adding this to the description: DAP Alex Plus All Purpose Acrylic Latex Caulk Plus Silicone for doors, windows, and molding.
I did an accent wall in a room, and I first tried just using blue tape and it failed miserably. I redid it using the caulk and yellow tape and it came out perfect. Thanks for this video!😊
I am still in the process of painting my bedroom but I had a corner just like this with two different colors. Three times I tried to paint it and every time the color from one wall got on the other & back and forth it went till I was reduced to tears. I blamed it on my age, bad eyesight and unsteady hands. About a week later I got a wild notion to find some of that DIY sticky tape that you can use on walls and such. So I carefully applied the 1.88 wide sticky tape to both sides of the corner walls. The design was nice and matched well. Next day it started peeling off & hanging. After about a week much of it was coming loose. So, this early a.m. I decided to take it down carefully but it pulled up paint off the wall and small trim board. I was again almost reduced to tears and thus started googling and found this video. After watching it twice I wrote down the supplies you mentioned and went straight to Lowe's. Now, I am going to try your method and I have confidence it will work out fine. Thanks for the great video on how to properly paint accent walls.
Instead using caulking, you can use the same paint where you put the tape, let id dry for some minutes and then start with the new color paint... often, using caulking, you can get with the time, little color changing where you used caulking... especially in exterior...
I have a customer in the past. And this customer, chosse very High light looking colors like. Green , yellow orange. 😊 It was for a brand new grosery store, Houston TX
I am very excited to try this method as I was kind of dreading it before seeing this video. I see you are using a 3M Hand-Masker, which model is it? Thank you for your help.
This information was very helpful: I followed another video and it wasn’t as precise. I will like to know what is the name of the hand tool that held the tape and paper to roll out on the wall?
Thanks for the video!! I'm going to paint accent wall for the first time and this boosts my confidence! :) One query.. Can I use Blue painter's tape instead of masking paper and tape? Also, is caulking a must?
Never seen that yellow trim tape in the UK. Will try frog tape and hope I get the hang if the cauking gun. Big mistake I made was to let the tape dry over night not realising bleeding was happening. Got to redo after hours of work. Do disheartening pulling that tape off 🤦♀️ thanks for video
What a dangone coincidence that I am using pretty close to those same colors to paint a room tonight in a similar fashion...except one wall will be a ombre of the two colors.
It’s a great question and you’re very perceptive to think of that; and here’s what every professional is going to tell you; do not waste your time like that but apply a very thick coat so that you can avoid having to do that again; it’s a lot of work to do that over
Spencer Colgan Wallpaper & Painting thanks so much for the quick response. It is a lot of work so I was hoping you would say something like that 🙂. I just wanted to avoid a halo effect. One more question after applying the thick coat along the edges with a brush do you go over it with a roller for it to be able to match the rest of the wall? Thank you for your time.
Hi Spencer, when I paint in the second coat, do I leave the tape on still?, or do I have take the tape off immediately after the first coat and cut in free hand?
Jason. I know it’s a lot of work so here’s the answer. 1. For best results. Either put a nice thick coat near the tape line that’s equal to 2 coats so you can pull the tape of minutes after applying. Or… 2. Remove tape after first coat and then reapply for second. How’s that?
He had 3 coats on the yellow. Two brush coats and a roller coat. No need to roll another coat all the way to the corner when rolling the rest of the wall twice.
A bit confused. Do you point the caulking gun at a 45 degree angle ie directly into the corner? If so, you would get caulk on both the tape and the adjacent wall? Or do you just put the caulk onto the tape?
Hey I’m just about to cut the corner in I can’t understand how the calking doesn’t get in the way? Doesn’t it get on the wall? Or does it stay on the tape? Ty
Thank you I’ve been watching your shows for a long time now I’m from the UK but I live in Vancouver I have my own painting and wallcovering company I love your trips once again Spencer thank you so much
I would just use frog tape.....then to prevent paint getting into nooks and crannies just use a brush with very little paint on it and basicaly dry brush lightly verically.
It looks like he used white caulking. But emphasized using clear caulking, but most clear caulking is not paintable. I’ve used this technique many times, using white interior painters caulk, when needing to paint perfect straight lines on every type of surface texture. From very rough stucco to flat smooth metal. White painters caulk is a bit thicker to be able to paint over right away. When painting a light colour against a dark colour, it acts like a primer by covering any of the dark colour that has transferred or bled over to the light side of the line so it doesn’t show through the light paint.
If that statement is true consistently, then you are an artist and should not be painting walls. Most of us don't have that kind of coordination or that steady of a brush stroke. I envy you.
Lou, when you’re applying that paint with a brush please understand that the paint splatter always, always, always… Gets onto the 9 inch paper; I should’ve shown you the paper After removal. Secondly, if you don’t put the 9 inch paper, your hand will be restricted to go very slowly because it’s very easy to slip and go right onto your wall that you’re trying to protect from Paint.
DO NOT USE DAP AMP (advanced modified polymer) caulking. The tube reads “paintable” and “clear” and “outperforms silicone“ so I thought it did not contain silicone. It must, because paint does NOT stick to it. This caulking leaves you with a taped wall, painted corners, and paint receding from the caulking. What a mess.
Hard to make it out but doesnt look straight at all. The caulk will not look good left on the wall regardless if it's clear or not. I'd skip the caulking and just brush with care going from top of tape towards wall only so as to not force the paint under the tape. Or better yet just forget the tape and brush it by hand

do u have to use caulk if u r real careful
Yes, if the texture is uneven like it is here. It's never a bad idea, but less imperative on smooth walls.
Awesome video. Is the caulking dry ?
Just want to say I followed your instructions and my accent walls turned out great!! Nice straight lines on a textured surface. Thanks very much

Thank you sir for this great demonstration.
How do I do this if I am using a silk paint? Many thanks.
Nice I never used a hand masker for an accent wall
So when paint an accent wall and the second wall is a different color do you tape and caulk first or just paint is crooked and fix afterwards
Amazing...how come the brush doesnt mess with the wet caulking???

Just get it into the corner…. Then smooth work your finger sir. Happy new year
So when pulling off the tape how does the silicone come off if there some on the tape and some on the wall?
The acrylic caulking kept on the wall remains, but now is covered with paint.
Hi great video . Do you let the caulk dry then apply paint or when its wet . You say clear caulk I thought you could only get white
Don’t let caulk dry
Make sure it's clear AND paintable.
@@spencercolgan so is it clear or white caulk?
I don't understand where the calking was going. In the corner on the tape and the unpainted wall? Does the paint stick to wet caulking?
Yes. Paint sticks to it for sure. The caulking is sealing the point at which tape and wall meet
Are you pulling it off before the caulking dries and it makes a line like that?
Exactly! Pull it off when wet!!!
Hello
Can I just ask, do you not wait for the paint to dry before peeling off the tape and paper? I think that’s what I’ve been doing wrong 🤷🏼♀️
I am not expert but I would say no. If the paint dries then you risk peeling the paint off with the tape.
Hey I’m just about to cut the corner in I can’t understand how the calking doesn’t get in the way? Doesn’t it get on the wall? Or does it stay on the tape? Ty
Yes, then he painted over it.
Hi Spencer how long do you leave the caulking to dry for before painting?
Don’t let it dry sir. All while wet.

Yes, he painted over the caulk.

How Do I protect the wall before I paint the accent wall?
Masking paper, tape and clear caulking.
Where do i find that tool for tape and paper togrther?

Where in the UK can I buy clear Caulk?
I’ve chewed from my British friends. You can’t. :(

Why clear, not white?
My paint had been dry 5 years and the yellow frog tape pulled of 100% of the paint it was stuck to. Right back to plaster
I never knew Christopher Walken painted rooms.

Nope. I used clear. It goes on white. Dries clear.
