How to make a 4 jaw lathe chuck using plywood
    #michaelpaley
Ad cogitandum et agendum homo natus est
A chuck is a specialized type of clamp. It is used to hold an object with radial symmetry, especially a cylinder. In drills and mills it holds the rotating tool whereas in lathes it holds the rotating workpiece. On a lathe the chuck is mounted on the spindle which rotates within the headstock. For some purposes (such as drilling) an additional chuck may be mounted on the non-rotating tailstock.
Many chucks have jaws, (sometimes called dogs) that are arranged in a radially symmetrical pattern like the points of a star. The jaws are tightened up to hold the tool or workpiece. Often the jaws will be tightened or loosened with the help of a chuck key, which is a wrench-like tool made for the purpose. Many jawed chucks, however, are of the keyless variety, and their tightening and loosening is by hand force alone. Keyless designs offer the convenience of quicker and easier chucking and unchucking, but have lower gripping force to hold the tool or workpiece, which is potentially more of a problem with cylindrical than hexagonal shanks. Some lathe chucks have independently moving jaws which can also hold irregularly shaped objects (ones that lack radial symmetry). Collet chucks, rather than having jaws, have collets, which are flexible collars or sleeves that fit closely around the tool or workpiece and grip it when squeezed. A few chuck designs are more complex yet, and they involve specially shaped jaws, higher numbers of jaws, quick-release mechanisms, or other special features.
Some chucks, such as magnetic chucks and vacuum chucks, are of a different sort from the radially symmetrical mechanical clamps mentioned above. Instead, they may be surfaces (typically flat) against which workpieces or tools are firmly held by magnetic or vacuum force.

Michael McCarty Stated, "Next time you want even measurement around a circle, wrap tape around so ends meet,Take tape off lay on table measure length decide even marks replace tape on round object. Perfect location for drilling holes."
    This is a grand idea.

Just awesome 👍! This is the kind of stuff I love. You were able to build something as complicated and precise as a lathe Chuck with little more than hand tools. Not even an actual lathe or a drill press lol. Your project is amazing, you should be very proud.

You have some MAD wood working skills, and an obvious eye for engineering.
Very well thought out and executed build.
And your use of "alternative" materials for construction is inspiring.

the jaw Lathe Chuck diy made of wood with more precision than I have seen.
I am doing one of this type and another Longworth and well the effort is that it is accurate.

Also, W I Biles has a very good point, Rotational torque will ware this device out fast. Also I would have instilled some hex nuts in the holes for the jaw driver bolts to increase life usage of this tool.

  • @coburnlowman

    I give it five 👍👍👍👍👍!!!!!
It would be hard getting use to a backward thread on the jaws tho. Also when truing your jaws its a good idea to first true up the center first , like put a shaft in them and indicate it before turning the steps of the jaws. What you did is still great work and I'd love to have that chuck. Being that I've never made one I'm by no means putting yours down.
Having a set of jaws cast from aluminum would be awesome as a finishing touch. Or having the entire chuck aluminum casted and truing that up.
I worked in a production shop as a tool and fixture maker. The lathe they had had interchangeable jaws. One of the things I'd do to keep busy was to make up soft jaws out of 6061 aluminum because lots of the turning I had was on hard to hold fixtures. By using them I never lost a heavy production fixture. I loved that job , it was bicycle riding distance from home , it paid great , the production ladies always brought me great food because I'd do my best to make anything they needed. The owner was crazy and after I threw a chair thru a window because he cursed at me for zero reason I had to find another job.

    Ganz klar: Daumen hoch

I really like what you have made. However the jaws only have the threaded bolt to keep them in place against the twist that the work will put on the jaws. I really feel that you should have made triangular inserts between each jaw to make a working track against their sides to help keep them upright against the force of the tool twist. What do you think?
