Cate Blanchette portrays Elizabeth so well....would be so nice to have it historically accurate
That was back when period pieces had to be like soap operas to get people to see them.. the "Titanic" effect
Reading the comments ... this critique is also full of inaccuracies.
Not to mention the fact that Kat Ashley, Elizabeth's favorite lady-in-waiting, is actually her governess and is supposed to be 30 years older than her. They pretty much had a mother-daughter relationship. In the movie, however, Kat Ashley is a young woman and close to the same age as Elizabeth.
And she was Walter Raleighs great aunt! Elizabeths boy toy from the second movie.
And she was more like Walsignham 2.0, she snuck around for information and provided it to Elizabeth. She had such a huge role in her life and to see it erased in this movie.elizabeth visited her deathbed everyday and was so distraught when the woman who was practically her mother just wasn't in court one day.
The tie in with the dress was kinda creative...Kat was gifted a French silk dress by the queen but she wasn't poisoned and didn't die horrifically like this. Not to mention they would have had to have soaked that dress in a vat of whatever toxin they used which would have been needed by the gallon, something not able to be accomplished in 1500-whatever.
I was half expecting Cecil to say: "welcome, to the Jurassic Park, your highness"! I mean, it wouldn't have mess up the historical accuracy that much more, considering how much "artistic licence" was taken already.
We've spared no expense.

The pictures you are showing of the current Hatfield House is not the one Princess Elizabeth would have known. It was built much later in 1611, eight years after the death of Queen Elizabeth I. There is a section of the old palace at Hatfield that stands nearby and does look medieval and bears a resemblance to the one in the film. Also, the Tower of London was not just used as a prison for accused traitors and criminals. It was used as a royal palace. For centuries, it was the place where new monarchs would stay until their coronation. They would travel in grand procession from the Tower to be crowned in Westminster Abbey.
He's right. She did the best job portraying Queen Elizabeth of all the movies, even if it was so inaccurate.

8:17 the mention of fountains with red wine is not accurate. That was part of the Field of Cloth of Gold. A temporary city Henry the VIII had constructed. If the fountains at Base Court had wine it was only occasionally.
Damn that's cool man I love facts
It IS accurate in that there were many conduits built in London and larger cities in England, which were for fresh water to flow for people to access. Many people in the cities may not have had access to wells or springs. So this provided clean, fresh water. On Holy days and festivals, the authorities would have the conduits run with Wine for the citizens.
Even the fountains were accurate though tended to be only where the King was.
@Cherry Berry - you said "If the fountains at Base Court had wine it was only occasionally"'; that contradicts your saying the fountains with red wine is not accurate.
In an archeological dig at Hampton Court Palace in 2008 they found remains of a 16th century fountain.
They built a replica of the fountain shown in the painting of the Field of the Cloth of Gold.

You say tumour! Arnold says tummuhh!
The Hatfield House you show as "fit for a Renaissance Princess" was built in 1611 by Robert Cecil, William's son. What's left of Elizabeth's home is now called The Old Palace at Hatfield
Tbf the Old Palace is still a good deal prettier than whatever that old castle thing is they show in the movie, but your quite right. It's rather a glaring inaccuracy of the video as well, as Hatfield House is considered a key example of an early modern Country House, not renaissance. It might seem minor, but if you have any sort of interest in the architectural history of england, it's almost as glaring an error as comparing a renaisance manor to an old medieval castle. Perhaps even more, since renaisance manor's stil rettained many architectural elements of old castles.

Well, they *were* childhood friends- & she wasn't exactly in pole place to become the next ruler of England when her father died- odd matrimonial bonds had been made before now, so it was hardly impossible; I mean, do we have any indications from first hand sources that Edward's health would be so frail early on, & that he would never get to marry & father an heir?
Mary *could* have had a child during her 3/ 4-year marriage (I mean, by the time she married, she was heading into menopause- which wouldn't have helped her bio-clock, but Catherine Parr had initially counted herself out on motherhood, too, most like- & she'd been married like three times- so she had even more reason to do so - when she finally got herself hitched to Tom Seymour), & Elizabeth's status/ marriage prospects would have dropped further; much like she & Mary's did, when Edward was born.
The thing is, obviously; due to her royal status, heir to the throne or not- people would have been watching her, due to what happened when she was younger.
Royalty & high nobility largely married for political reasons, as everyone well knows- rare are the Catherine of Valois/ Edmund Tudor or, Edward IV/ Elizabeth Woodville-type matches - though, *had* Elizabeth's siblings managed to live longer/ have children, her marriage prospects may have become less of a concern.
Conversely, like Nick mentions- his family's connection to the taint of treason might have impacted his chances, even more than his marital status.
It's not often mentioned outside of the famous example of Mary, Queen of Scots, but Elizabeth could be quite cruel to potential heirs to the throne- the hapless Lady Jane Grey had sisters, who- in accordance with Henry's will, were in line to the throne; I can't recall what happened with them, but I believe one of them ended up in the Tower, when they married someone else who was also somewhere in the line of succession- there their child Arbella, or Arabella Stuart- who lived into the reign of James I, & was basically under house arrest 'til she died.
Given it's said she was a well educated & charming young woman, you can't help but wonder how different history would be- had Elizabeth accepted the Greys, & just raised Arabella her as heir...
@@HK-gm8pe They change things to make it more mainstream and marketable.

I saw this movie when it first came out and thought (and still think) it was wonderful. I'm not sure I actually ever thought it was historically accurate out meant to be. I remember from the poster alone, with the very attractive Cate Blanchett's strewn about her shoulders, you realized you weren't going to watch your grandfather's Queen Elizabeth. And I think your early summation, about the filmmakers wanting to make a historical drama, is dead on. The movie is very stylized throughout. When Elizabeth and Cecil have sex, I doubt the bed curtains had a pattern of eyes on it, either. In other words, I never thought the movie was historically accurate, but I never thought it was trying to be either, and I thought it was pretty clear about that.

My professor actually did show this in class, but used it as a way to test our retention of what we'd learned, having us dissect the inaccuracies afterwards.
Henry was the man.
Henry: oh yeah, I'm gonna make my own church. With divorce, and beheading!
"In fact! Destroy the churches!"
...So same as the old church just with you at the head of it instead of the Pope?
No wonder the masses by and large shrugged off the "change"
@@Terminalsanity well there were more restrictions to divorce. Consummated marriages were extremely hard to get annulled.
@@lelouche25 Depends on who you were and who you divorcing. It was only hard for Henry to get one because the Spanish Crown at the time gave so much more money to the Catholic Church than the English Crown did.
@@Terminalsanity True but we got to remember religion was much bigger at the time. Divorce was really frowned on by the Catholics.
One of my history teachers showed us The Patriot when we where studying the American Revolution.
Elizabeth kept Dudley's last letter to her in a box beside her bed until her death and wrote upon it "his last letter"
That's strange. This isn't Glory or Das Boot
Please Nick
@Tomas Juarez yeah, freed slaves were the minority rather than the majority
Glory lol what a silly film for silly minded people lol
@@andrewjackson2011
Why silly?
@@Geronimo_Jehoshaphat the guy's account is named Andrew Jackson. I think it is supposed to be a "oh, user name checks out" joke.
Would love to see him cover both!
Mary Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden (womb) grow? With silver bells and cockell (cuckold) shells and pretty maids (dead babys) all in a row.
OH DAMN! My little girl (3) sings this song often! I always thought it was a cute rhyme about a girl's garden... well how wrong was I? 😂🤦♀️
Learn something new everyday. It's quite eerie how some of the most beloved nursery rhymes can have the darkest of origins.
According to Disney; the silver bells were in reference to her clothing designs, the cockle shells were in reference to her favorite food and the pretty maids all in a row were her ladies in waiting
The funny thing about Henry VIII's divorce becoming such a big deal, is that I've read of a few accounts of other monarchs just basically saying "Whatever Pope, doing it anyway" and that was that.
my teacher taught us all of this accurately but then showed this movie in class (while taking a much longer time doing it to pause and explain the historical inaccuracies) because he thinks people are helped with the visual but it takes up SO much of our class’s time.
“The church should be headed by the king”
Henry “Make this book law”
"Madam, you cannot marry Lord Robert....he is already married"
Elizabeth: okay! Your point?
The real Queen Elizabeth ruled like a boss.
I think, due to her Father, she was actually afraid to be married. Remember his two wives he beheaded 1 was her Mother and the other was her Mother's 1st cousin
Steph Smith it probably had more to do with risking her power. Gaining a king would make her loose some power, she had total control as a single monarch I’m sure her moms death and step moms deaths didn’t help but she still loved men throughout her life
@@stephsmith9911 Henry viii wasn't that bad.
@@wilmafistfit4788 I agree with you, it was more about not being in a position to BE BEHEADED at the 'whim' of some man! And she could only maintain the power to be safe from that by NEVER marrying...
@@htoodoh5770 I'm probably bias but ...the dude killed two of his wives, abandoned the other. The only ones who escape that mess was the one who went along with the divorce (though I think the guy who set it up got executed) and the one who outlived him. And then came how he treated his daughters.
Wow I am so impressed by the amount of research it takes to do these videos. Bravo 👏🏻
So glad I found you ! Have been watching you all day . How fun !
Mary Queen of Scots was also historically inaccurate as hell.
yup
it killed me how far from reality that whole film was, couldn't enjoy it!
It was more accurate than this movie
The version from the early 70s, with Vanessa Redgrave, is more acurate, and has the plus of an incredible music score.
A small detail: It was Bloody Mary leading the coup against the Queen, Jane Grey, who was the heir to Edward VI, not vice-versa.
I think this is my new favorite history channel.
I'm so glad I came upon your channel I didn't know that you were out there. I love it I'm going to watch all the episodes.
Cate Blanchett should've won the Oscar for best actress in 1999 - it "somehow" went to Gwyneth Paltrow for Shakespeare in Love???!
It is amazing how many historical sources are preserved for England at that age. Other places are less fortunate.
I'm eagerly awaiting for you to tear Elizabeth: The Golden Age a new one.
I just discovered this channel yesterday and I love it, and I've been bingewatching it since. Seeing Joseph Fiennes playing an Elizabethan guy just makes me wanna see you review Shakespeare in Love. Please, please, PLEASE.
“Oh shut up movie!” 😂
Honestly I thought this was Elizabeth: the golden age at first
I loved the movie for the costuming and it did not matter if those where historically accurate or not. The clothing was exquisite.
Thank you for clarifying so well
One of my favorite historical anecdotes is Pope Sixtus V's reaction to the Spanish Armada debacle. It was basically, "Damn that Elizabeth is a badass! I wish she were Catholic, because if she was, I WOULD TOTALLY ADOPT HER!" I'm paraphrasing, but not exaggerating. He thought she was the greatest monarch in Europe. It's really funny. But this movie does piss me off. It is so sexist and nonsensical. Only the Tudors, Blackadder the Second and Philippa Gregory's works are more insulting to Elizabeth. There were contemporary Irish people who had more respect for her than this movie. And the Irish (rightly) loathed her.
Miranda Richardson is really great in blackadder though
To be fair... it treats Prince Regent George so much worse in Blackadder III.
I actually like that Blackadder II made its female characters as hilarious as the men (esp Nursey!)
See I can jobe with Blackadder b/c it's HILARIOUS & not meant to be historical.
I absolutely agree except for Blackadder which is by no mean an attempt to be "historical".
*iT's SeXiSt*
No points for historical accuracy.
All the points in the 'hey I know that actor...' category.
They even got Dr. John Hammond to take a break from planning his theme park to act in the movie. Hope his park works out!
I read this 10 seconds after I said " Hey that's Jeffrey Rush!"
I love playing 'spot the Aussie!' when I watch movies... I didn't realise Essie Davis was in 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' 'til I watched itfor the second time- I was so used to her being a brunette, that I was surprised to see her with lighter hair in 'Australia'.
Doctor who was that?
Your videos are so enjoyable to watch. Great work!
8:08 I'd imagine those European palaces would take an entire season, especially the Palace of Madrid, the Royal Palace of Caserta, Versailles, Stockholm Palace and the Winter Palace

''We live in a kingdom''
-Queen Elizabeth
Also as a Contrast, you can review Mary: Queen of Scots movie.
Also, the HBO miniseries "Elizabeth I" with Helen Mirren.
Is that Mel Brooks in a lady kilt?
I love the Tudor period and Elizabeth the 1st thank you for sharing, I also just subscribed to your channel thank you again
Queen Elizabeth is one of my favorite historical figures of all time.. and her mother Queen Anne.. I've watched this movie countless times.. so I'm very very excited to see your take on it!
