  • A discussion of the history of the Goa’uld empire, their rise to power and their ultimate failure to maintain dominance over the galaxy. Because the Goa’uld empire. empire had come to dominate the Milky Way Galaxy, in the early years of the Stargate program, the Goa’uld proved themselves to be a constant threat each time the humans of earth set out among the stars.

    Honestly, I really liked Ba'al and Lord Yu. They both seemed to be the only Gou'uld with enough common sense to recognize just how fragile their system actually was and didn't let the "god-hype" go to their heads.

      Yu was great and I hate they killed him off. But that was for the best, given his worsening mental health state. But Ba'al tho.... That guy was a chad. Really the only Goa'uld I take my hat off for respect. He didn't just went for the extra mile when it came to things that needed to be done, he went an extra lightyear. He was beyond resourceful, was the only Goa'uld who didn't let his species' norms and the genetic memory corrupt his free will and self-awareness, he showed moments of genuine kindness, he was a badass, a genius strategist, a hero and a villain, all in all a very intelligent individual, a survivor, and most importantly, he admitted his species is basically a bunch of circus clowns pretending to be gods. He wasn't below serving when it counted, and he held the people of Earth in such an high esteem that during the time travel arc, he ordered, as the supreme system lord, the others to protect and help humanity, as he had tremendous respect for their tenacity, resourcefulness, strategies, fighting spirit, and he knew they had virtually unlimited potential if allowed to grow under their guidance.

    It bears stressing that Ra managed to hold together the Goa'uld empire for 3000 years and within a few short years after his death, it all fell apart. Certainly the Tau'ri played a role in that, but it speaks to Ra's cunning that he alone could hold an empire together made up of ego-maniacal, back-stabbing snakes.

    • @vladchannelyt
      @vladchannelyt 2 роки тому +36

      @Lokabrenna Yes, but his downfall came from two simple things.
      Firstly, his position as an undefeated, unchallenged Supreme System Lord, and his military might, basically guaranteed no Goa'uld would ever dare harm him. He knew of no other race that might be able to hurt him either. So he was stuck to the exact same lifestyle and upheld it for thousand of years, never evolving as a person, only allowing his ego to inflate.
      Secondly, when he first encountered the Tau'ri, while concerned for their technological advancements after realizing they had mastered nuclear fission, HE DID make a smart move, trying to use the Gate's Naquadah composition to amplify the nuclear blast on Earth, likely to something around 15 megatons of TNT (I can't remember the exact number), which would cause the world to panic, and most likely spark a nuclear war, letting them kill themselves. But his crucial, and fatal, mistake was the fact that he underestimated gravely the cunning of modern day humans and their fighting spirit, which made him let his guard down (as he was certain he had already won), and most importantly, he was COMPLETELY unfamiliar with any and all tactics trained modern army personnel might use. He really didn't expect them to use his own rings to beam the nuke on board his Ha'tak lmao

      Don't forget about the sarcophagus, which basically caused the downfall of the Goa'uld. Those who spend less time seem more "sensible", see osiris(who spends time in a stasis jar) or Anubis(ascended).

      @Lokabrenna I dunno, they never explained if ancient Earth mythology was based on the Goa'uld or if they just appropriated mythology that already existed. @Lokabrenna not just the Christians, you have to consider the sensibilities of the time and the fears of inciting Muslims to act out or fear of being seen as insensitive towards their beliefs, also that many of the people in Hollywood have their own Abrahamic faith even more closely tied to that angry national sky deity than for Christians and Muslims and it might offend them to delve too deep into that tangent for SG1.

    I remember the episode where SG1 helped the rebel Jaffa (secretly being led by Imhotep), and O'Neil called the staff weapons weapons of terror, and Earth P90s weapons of war. The Goa'uld were used to fighting each other for so long war had become ceremony of a sort, and they saw humans in general as little more than animals that were easily terrified into submission. Tauri forces could adapt and fight back faster and harder than the Goa'uld were used to, and while technologically inferior, they could use their tech (and what they acquired from off world) more efficiently.

    I think the genetic memories of the Goa'uld reinforced their evil nature, making each generation more arrogant as well, because it did the opposite with the Tok'Rah. Anubis may have been the most advanced but I personally think Baal was the most dangerous, he was extremely intelligent, he was somewhat able to overcome his ego if he needed help which was extremely rare for a goa'uld, he even decided to serve Anubis when knew how powerful he had become. Apophis was resilient but his plans rarely worked, Baal was nearly always one step ahead of the SGC.

    • @Mugthraka
      @Mugthraka 2 роки тому +1

      Baal real strenght was his flexibility and its opportunistic nature.
      He knew when to not overstay his welcome and when to fall bakc or cut his loses, and he new of to make the best of most situations
      The guy, imho was basically David Xanatos from Gargoyles, but as an Alien, Baal was pulling the Xanatos Gambit all along!
      For those not knowing, David Xanatos is one of the main antagonist of the 90's animated series called "The Gargoyles" (basically Disney's reponse to WB Batman animated series).
      What made Xanatos great is that he always had a plan, and if his plan failed he had a backup plan to fall on, his flexibility and resourcefullness was unbound and unmatched, and the fact that he wasn't a complete villain, but more like a Chaotic Neutral, made him the most iconic antagonist of the show.(wich in a show where you had Historical figures such has McBeth and King Arthur or mythological like Odin, Oberon & Titania and Puck, was no small feat at all)
      They named it the "Xanatos Gambit": a manouevre where the character has so many contingencies and plans for a given situation, that EVEN when the outcome looks like it was a HUGE lose on the surface, in truth it was still a marginal Win for the character, who even if the prime objective has eluded him, he still managed to get that piece of info/that object that would allow him to move forward with his plans and still considere it a win.

      i wouldn't say baal was more dangerous than Anubis, as Anubis was planning to use the Dakara superweapon to destroy all life within the galaxy.
      that trumps all the goa'uld if you ask me. and the whole reason why baal ended up in the service of Anubis in the first place was simply out of survival as Anubis was un-killable due to his half ascended form, which is why so many other goa'uld and Jaffa ended up in the service of Anubis as they never had a chance.
      however the whole ascended eternal combat thing that they wrote in for Oma, was lazy writing and could have lead to a better outcome.

      Honestly, the video undercut what Baal did. His time travel device was pretty incredible. It fed real time data from across the galaxy to the base, predicting when solar flares would happen, and then calculating which combination of gates could lead to you traveling back in time to the proper date. It was probably the single most advanced piece of tech build in the Milky Way that wasn't made by the Ancients, and it honestly gave them a run for their money in its scale and capabilities.

    Minor quibble: I know this isn't stated anywhere, but I believe it is implied, but might just be my headcanon.
    Unas are easier for the Goa'uld parasite to heal, an Unas with a Goa'uld regenerates from wounds almost as fast as they can be inflicted (as seen by Unas, voiced by James Earl Jones, in the episode Thor's Hammer). In the film, Ra states that he likes humans because their bodies are so easy to repair, indicating the sarcophagus that had just brought Daniel back from the dead. The series later establishes the sarcophagus is based on Ancient technology, and the Ancients were essentially humans, so the sarcophagus tech works best on human bodies. It isn't calibrated properly for an Unas, so it less efficient. Human hosts are still more fragile than Unas ones, and can be killed pretty easily (as demonstrated by SG-1 on numerous occasions), but if you can get them to a sarcophagus quickly enough, they'll come right back. An Unas may be able to survive more damage and heal quicker, but once dead, the sarcophagus may not be able to restore the host and the Goa'uld to life.
    So it's not that humans were preferred because they were easier for the symbiotes to repair, but because they were easier for the sarcophagus (and probably the hand healing device) to repair.

      Similar to the Asgard, the sarcophagus killed off the Goa'uld. They sought too much in technology. The people who ascended didn't live very complicated lives for the most part. "Death is only the beginning of the journey" is not that far from Buddhism seeing death as an illusion.

    One of the biggest flaws of the System Lords was their species' lack of innovation when it came to technology. they were scavengers and rarely developed new tech on their own. They were able to take advanced technology, but they were not advanced CULTURALLY... their industry was feudal, their government monarchy, their public education virtually non-existent (even of negative value given the opposition to letting slaves read or write). Think about it: By the end, the Tauri were fielding FAR more advanced weapons, ships, and other technologies than anything the Goa'uld ever had... Why? Because the Goa'uld squandered the creative and intellectual capabilities of literally Trillions of human slaves across their empire.

    There are still some minor goauld out there, whit small numbers of loyal jaffa, I just think they would be hiding and preparing for a comeback, maybe not getting again control of the galaxy, but to once more become a powerful force in the galaxy, one needs to remember the goauld took over the galaxy, because they were for all purposes unopposed.

    @dragonweyr44 2 роки тому +21

    The ultimate weakness that the Goa'uld never developed their own tech. The "advanced" tech is at least 5000 years old and never advanced since
    Tau'ri, on the other hand, were able to surpass Goa'uld tech, replicator tech, Ori tech, Wraith tech and Asurans in less than 15 years by developing their own tech as well as studying alien tech, reverse engineering and surpassing it, wiping out all of those societies

    • @dragonweyr44
      @dragonweyr44 2 роки тому

      @Lokabrenna Even still, they've acquired superior tech to the Goa'uld, Replicators, Wraith, Asurans and Ori from the infirior position they were from their first encounters with each race to 15 years later
      As for reverse engineering, with the X 301, as Jacob Carter said, "You just took two Death Gliders, slapped some Air Force decals (rondels) on them and called it a day."
      The X 302 was completely human built and reversed engineered from scratch. Just like the ONE 303 ship, the Prometheus as well as the 6 known 304s
      The weapons, engines and shields may be Asgardian in origin, but they DID inherit them for the Tau'ri being "The Fifth Race" and there is no telling what they will be able to go from there

    • @dragonweyr44
      @dragonweyr44 2 роки тому +1

      @Lokabrenna Actually, no IMO
      The Tau'ri did, in fact, steal, two death gliders in order to create the X 301, that's true, but everything else, with the possible exceptions of intars, were either reversed engineered from the Goa'uld or given to them from friendly powers like the Asgardians
      The Goa'uld, on the other hand, stole their tech, as is, from other cultures, particularly the Ancients
      Now, you may argue that the Ancients were already dead or ascended by the time the Goa'uld got to them and you'd probably be right. But I think that they probably acquired the tech as it already was and/or altered its appearance somewhat to conform to their cultural preferences rather than improve on the tech over time
      We saw in the original 1995 movie, as well as the SG1 2 part episode "Morpheus" that Jaffa staff weapons were identical today as they were 5 or even 10,000 years ago whereas Tau'ri tech improved in less than 10 as is shown by the difference between the Prometheus class battlecruiser and the Daedalus class battlecruiser

    • @dragonweyr44
      @dragonweyr44 2 роки тому

      @Lokabrenna You're not getting what I'm saying either
      Yes, the Tau'ri were given most, if not ALL the tech they have from others
      BUT
      I believe that they take what they have now (As of the end of SG: Universe) and develop tech on their own that will far outshine the tech that Goa'uld, Asgardians, Asurans, Ancients etc. have in the near future, tech that is NOT given or reverse engineered or even derived from the other cultures
      The Goa'uld cold never do that 5000 years
      The Asgardians called the Tau'ri "The Fifth Race" I don't think that they would've done so to a race of mere scavengers like the Goa'uld

    • @specialnewb9821
      @specialnewb9821 2 роки тому

      @Lokabrenna The big issue seems to have been the Naqadah generators. They were directly taught to build those by the uh Orban? The one with the kid geniuses. After that they could actually use and understand the tech they found much faster.

      @TheAn Onymous From what I've seen on the series, only Ba'al and a couple of other of his companions had the ability to reverse engineer anything
      The two others that I think had the capabilities to do so were Nerus and possibly Athena
      Anubis, for as powerful as he was, couldn't. He could only use existing tech
      Osiris didn't have any aptitude for it though like her master Anubis, could use Ancient tech

I always fantasized about this story (maybe a Sg1 Atlantis movie) bringing together The old Unas era Goa'uld, and their war with the great Alliance especially the Asgard and Ancients. This could have addressed Ra temporarily using an Asgard host, and maybe even explaining the Asgard in the Pegasus Galaxy.

    Actually I found Ba'al's attempt to change history interesting. Rather than destroy earth, he seemed genuinly interested in changing the way Goaul went about doing things. Of course he may have intended to dismantle the Tauri from within once he gained their trust, but to be honest i didnt get that impression. He seemed genuinly excited to enjoy the fruits of being in an alliance with the Tauri and Jaffa. After all, he could easily have solved the problem by taking a single Hatak to Earth as soon as he made it to the past. But instead he systematically took over the system lords, treated his Jaffa well while promising them freedom, did his best to keep the love of his life by his side, and approached the Humans with talk of an alliance. To me it came across as someone who decided he like the way he'd seen the Tauri get to opperate, and attempted to emulate it. Just poorly. Also whod have thought someone as cunning as him would develop a big enough soft spot to end up dying to a Goaul that he should have known not to trust. Love is blind and all that.

    there are 3 broad categories of Gou'ald though individual gou'alds may show multiple traits or shift more towards one during their story each snake is primarily one of these 3 qualities
    Warmonger- gains power by combat often leads their troops themselves they buy into the godhood delusion but aren't so far gone to make rational military decisions(Apophis, Herur come to mind)
    Psycho-completely by into their god status, willing to do every nasty thing to anyone who crosses them even if it isn't rational to do so(Anubis(he starts more practical but quickly degrades especially after the drone attack),Chronos, Molock, Sokar are good examples of this)
    Pragmatist- Using political, espionage, or tech to gain power willing to drop the god stick if it's in their interest(Ba'al, Yu, Niriti) a lot of lesser Gou'ald fall into this category like Tanus, Osiris and camulas.

Plus some ascended may even confront him (which one did) for its like how adults nearby would not allow children to be bullied by a grown ass man.
