I ordered a a 40kWh (400 mile) version with full solar, tent and AWD. As an engineer I appreciate the design and I also like their stance on the right to repair. They believe the owner deserves the right to get parts and make repairs themselves. This helps with a startup as they can’t immediately hav repair centers everywhere.
We need to resist the Chinese invasion of EVs! Yes!
So how much was it for all that more or less than a Tesla

I'm one of those guys who fell in love with the Aptera. I pre-ordered mine with the 40kW/400mile range, AWD (0-60 in 3.5 sec), full solar (40mi/day with good sun). On top of the Aptera's original styling, and performance, it should cost almost nothing to drive daily. Thanks Jay for featuring the reborn Aptera. I look forward to hearing your impressions of the production model next year.
Congrats!
As a 73 yo, I have also ordered about the same as Dean - but with the tent. :) I do NOT want to be a polluter and this fills the bill. And is affordable unlike the Tesla.
The original was more polished. This one is too gimmicky. I seriously doubt it will ever go into production.

@@TheBandit7613 The original Aptera was ground breaking for its time. But the reborn Aptera includes the technical advances of the last 10 years. From wheel motors, to more advanced batteries, to the software and control systems, to the cooling, to the solar panels. Production is to begin early next year. I am betting (with my wallet) that Aptera succeeds this time.
Was just ranting with my cousin today about all of the 2.5 tonne SUV’s driving around with one person in it then saw this. Ordered mine. I hope they succeed. 🙏
I'll stick with my truck too...like your cuz...safety first!
I'll have to see the safety rating. I'm not dying for the cause, and I've had 4 EVs.
Those 2.5 ton SUVs are narrower than this three-wheeler.
I love it. As I near retirement, this is all I'd ever need for local driving. Never having to charge is a huge feature
Even if you only got half your daily drive via solar, that doubles the range of the battery. So 200 mile battery would go 400 miles and if were driving 20 miles/day, that's 20 days between charges. 20 kWh will take ~16hrs.
Did anyone notice he wants the vehicle to be fish like, but also be very ephishent!!

My mother coulda used something like this, but she gave up driving in the last year or so. She lives around Las Vegas, which of course gets more then enough sun for a car like this. With how little she was driving before covid hit, would have been always full batteries. Just leave it outside after you are done driving around, and pull it in the garage the next day with around a full charge.

I love the efficiency first standpoint. A majority of all trips are run solo, and it doesn't make sense to have an SUV for that.
1.5kW at 70mph is very impressive (that's about the power of a 50cc scooter)
It's very cool. Though it getting closer to a real hatchback is a big appeal. Both factors are selling points for me. I am glad Jay reviewed this. I remember the video from 13 years ago. I was hoping there would be a review of the new version of Aptera. Good luck! I will be following this closely.
I love the sound of those engines!
Those fairings wobble way too much, though.
I learned recently that's is because the fairings are not complete. They've left off the inner panel so they can change around the cables and suspension. With that inner panel they are much more stable.
Electric car has no engine sound except of the tires rub/vibration on the wheel fairings that hold the wheel and engines on the outside!
@@briankirby6714 sometimes the commutation of the motor is barely audible, it depends if they are using trapezoidal waveforms or not, trapezoids can be quite noisy, but most controllers use sinusoidal or field oriented control
I was thinking the same thing. I also wonder if their mileage will suffer in the production model when they raise the bottom to be 5" off the road verses what we are currently seeing. I also worry about safety on the highway when a tractor trailer passes or you pass one. I would not eat get in an accident in one of these either.

they mention having to leave it outside to get the solar charge, but i think in most peoples cases you would get your charge AT work, then drive home and back on that charge.
I agree. When you're home it's often going to be nighttime anyway so it doesn't matter if it's in the garage.
You obviously have no idea how expensive it is for businesses to install that much charging for its employee's. Its all fun and games until you realize the cost of pulling another leg of power off the grid is going to involve the installation of transformers.
@@davefroman4700
He was talking about the charge from the solar panels being picked up in the work parking lot.
Also, parking lots in general are huge opportunities for solar power, and they’d provide shade so people wouldn’t have to climb into microwave ovens at the end of the day. That’s also before getting into snow and weather damage to the pavement that gets prevented.
Some people can park on the roof of their garage at work though, so this seems like an easy way to recoup some time of it charging.
This is definitely the future, a small car that doesn't need to be charged, most of us don't drive 40 miles a day. Why do we need to have gigantic cars that pollute everything🤷its just idiotic behavior that comes from marketing

Watching the videos, it needs a ton of suspension work. It rides bad.
World-wide use is now limited to warm sunny climates.
it would have helped if they looked for a partner like Bombardier, Polaris, Textron, ect.
Now then, I do understand the solar panels. California has a quite severe lack of power with many areas suffering from rolling blackouts as it is now.
And they have (foolishly) decided to close Diablo Canyon power plant.
That's a disaster. Even with Diablo operating at full capacity, even in September, they are granting other power plants permission to operate without pollution standards as they exceed rated capacity to provide as much energy as possible. That's bad politics.
Be honest with yourself.
What do you think is going to happen when millions of people get home from work and plug into a 240 volt, 50 amp circuit?

@@TheBandit7613 I have ridden in the Luna alpha prototype, and know how it performs first hand. Do you know what alpha prototype means? Perhaps you don't know that Aptera has hired several partners - among the best in the business. For the suspension and doors, Roush Performance had 20 engineers who have totally re-engineered both the suspension and the doors. Take a look at the fit and finish of the last Tesla Cybertruck that was shown. Tesla started development of the Cybertruck about the same time Aptera restarted and began their design. Even with the vast difference in resources, a production Aptera may reach the market first.
As far as power production, I have professional experience working at both nuclear plants and on and off shore petroleum production facilities. I also responded to the fires in Kuwait and other petroleum related disasters around the world. I understand the situation first hand, having lived in California for over 20 years, and dealing with the consequences of the fires.
Over use of petroleum is a root cause of these fires, which have greatly increased in number and frequency just in the past 20 years. The peak fire season is also occurring earlier in the year. We are already in the middle of disaster on an immense scale and it is well past time to take effective action.
As far as the grid capacity to handle EVs, yes, co-ordinated planning needs to be done. However, with V2G tech, a relatively small number of EVs plugged into the grid not only charge, but can shave 30% from peak grid loads. There are also long term solar thermal storage plants under development that will make load leveling and additional power even less of an issue than it is now. Such vehicles will improve grid stability - not harm it.
EVs such as Aptera are a part of the solution, not a cause of the problems we are experiencing with inefficient power use.

The Elio is a 3-wheeled, petrol engined autocycle (as it is called in the U.S.), and as such, avoids many of the requisites for being considered an automobile here. The Twizy, unlike the Elio, was never intended for the U.S. market.
@@braxtonnelson7422 the class doesn't matter. The use case is what interests me. As far as I can tell with zero storage it's what, to get one person to work if they don't need to bring any materials with them? The Elio and Twizzy are replacements for a bus, rather than replacements for a car.
Great design! I hope it turns into a successful product! Suggestions: you could make the top fixed windows extend (a bit) more into the roof, and for sure the wheel covers on the final product must be way less wobbly.
I did not want to be the first to throw a dart at their prototype, but as an automotive structural engineer the term we would use for that amplitude of "wobble" is "unsalable". Especially as it appears the driver can see the wheel right out the side window. I also appreciate how difficult reducing a vibration response like this can be, especially when it is exposed to such direct excitation (ON the wheel). I used to do that in my capped pickup with a plywood deck and carpet.

That’s pretty amazingly small amount of energy to keep a car moving at highway speed. Two things really strike me about that.
1) that’s about the same amount of energy needed to power a small compact, inexpensive electric room heater, or a microwave, and pretty amazing that small amount of energy can keep an Aptera moving down the road at highway speeds.
2) the full solar package on Aptera produces 700watts, so this means the solar cells are providing almost HALF the power needed to push an Aptera down the highway on a sunny day! Revolutionary to say the least!

This is good, I was pretty annoyed when the company looked like it was going to disappear. Aero is the key to range and energy savings and the solar panels are great on this new version too.
The solar panels are mostly decoration. Their function in ideal situations is pretty mild. Nevermind it takes being aligned with the sun for good efficiency. To call it highly suspect from a engineering and accounting perspective would be generous.
Most of the solar panels are a $900 option, so you don't have to get them. For people that live in apartments and park on the street, the solar panels are crucial and highly cost and time effective compared to expensive public chargers. From an engineering perspective, having an independent source of power helps with a lot of edge cases that bedevil normal EV's such as battery safety if the car is left parked in the sun for a week or two, keeping the batteries above damaging low charge states, etc. Most vehicles should at least have a solar panel on the roof to run a vent fan to keep the cabin cool while parked in the sun. This on its own would be highly cost-effective over the life of the vehicle with decreased AC usage after startup, increased passenger comfort, and increased lifetime of cabin electronics and materials.
@@nobodynoone2500 Solar panels can only produce so much electricity. The key to making them work well in an EV is that the vehicle's efficiency has to be superior. I have never before heard the birds chirping on JLG when he goes on a test drive.
Open windows with birds chirping. Wow.
Driving this to work is ideal, park in a sunny spot and charge while at work.
So anywhere but the United Kingdom?
The Design seems futuristic and closer to space crafts of future...Really innovative..
Actually Aptera started as a rip-off of the 2007 Volkswagen L1 Concept which entered production in 2013.
Of course Aptera has never delivered a single working vehicle to a customer in over 13 years and appears to be just another EV vaporware scam.
@Kunhappan K Yes it is! Hopefully this drives the market to pursue truly efficient and lightweight EVs instead of all these bricks that are everywhere now.
I love seeing Jay Leno driving the Aptera EV. This is going to be number 1 selling EV for student and ordinary people who don't want to spend Gas money or pay for electric charging because they can save a thousand dollar on their gas money with just parking every day outside the sun.
Exactly!
Don't worry. The State and Federal government will come up up with away to charge the owners of electric vehicles to make up for the lost taxes they would have payed in the taxes applied to the cost of gas or diesel fuel. The money paid for road upkeep has to come from someplace.
I love how at 23:38 the back go-pro just rolls off like it had enough.
Lol, I thought that was pieces falling off the car.
that was part of the fender, the entire thing keeps rattling so much it will eventually weaken, crack and break off, they need to be stronger. and i love how he keeps saying "a car you never need to plug in" you only get 20 miles of charging per 12 hour day, it would take 2 weeks outside for it to fully charge to full from 0, 7 days if you add the rear hatch charging roof that is an extra 25,000 dollars
It sounds very rattle-y the entire video.
I just noticed a change in the go-pro mountings. So funny. It obviously was not one take.
@@breakingames7772 SO MUCH misinformation here.
1: that was definitely not the rear fender. If you pause it at the right frame, you can see the lens of the camera.
2: unless you're going on a road trip, you probably don't need more than 20-40 miles per day. That means you either never have to charge, or maybe if drive a little further / live in a darker area and drain 10 miles a day, once every few months.
3. Solar costs $900 NOT $25,000! range goes from 400 miles at $25k to 1000 miles at $49k. This is probably what you're referring to.
This would be great for people that live in apartment buildings that do not have a charging infrastructure!
Even if you don't have solar due to the apartment casting a shadow, if you can snake out a 110V cord through the window, you'll still be charging significant mileage/hr compared to any other EV on the market.
hehehe, If your apartment has outdoor parking. Most newer apartment buildings have underground parking. I guess you could set up a bunch of mirrors and direct the sunlight to the car
@@GoofieNewfie69 spray the concrete with chrome?
The one thing that it seems the geniuses who want everybody to go electric is not everybody has ready access to charging. Plus don't anyone ever tell me that electric cars are non polluting. They may be less but completely clean. Not when you take into consideration the construction of the vehicle, batteries, charging system, tire wear etc.
@@mpetersen6 Not so much worried about the recycling aspect, that will take care of itself as demand requires. big question is where do all the electricity come form since the oil, gas, and coal fired plants a being shut down? The grid fails often with current loads. It takes years to build hydro or nuclear plants.
I think this looks amazing , big sellers are efficiency looks ,right to repair and solar charging. Very impressive. I want one in the UK 👏👏👏

You can DC fast charge too just like any tesla on a road trip.
@@peterjorgensen3 Tesla makes real cars... Aptera is nothing more than a vaporware scam.
it needs to have an external sound system to you can make engine sounds, and the Jetsons car sound needs to be the default sound.
Please no. The electric whir is enough; if you want a growl, get a proper V8.
It already makes a loud sucking sound like a vacuum cleaner... the sound of suckers getting their wallets emptied!
No thanks. Silence is a feature of EVs, not a bug. If you want to be obnoxious, put a fart can on a Civic.
@@RealBenAnderson Its not an advantage for the increasing number of pedestrians injured and killed by EVs every year.
Of course you are twice as likely to die in a EV related fire if you own one.
Insurance rates for EVs have doubled recently due to high number of claims, the problem is so bad Tesla Motors has been forced to offer its own vehicle and homeowner insurance to boost flagging vehicle sales
@@sandervanderkammen9230 the rate of EV fires per million miles traveled is far lower than for ICE vehicles according to US government data.
Neat! I know stiffness comes at the cost of weight, but those front fenders give a horrible quality impression. Looking forward to seeing later stage models. Looks like this is gonna be a killer product when it's all sorted out.
According to Aptera representative Rev. Bruce Nelson the beta version will be made from a new composite derived from recycled, biodegradable, gluten-free material called 'Love Resin'.
Rev Bruce Nelson says that vibration that causes fatigue failure in ordinary materials actually makes 'Love Resin' stronger and more durable.
This is because the individual molecules are emotionally attracted by the Aptera's love for the environment.

@@bob-wo3ir Aptera isn’t a Car and they have 10 000 preorders. Aptera don’t compete with normal cars and won’t make huge numbers. It’s more like the quad mopeds in Europe. Renault have made about 30 000 electric Twizy quads and that’s nothing normal about that one.
@@bob-wo3ir Tesla made it because they got a big loan. Their car was not affordable and based on a Lotus. Aptera has gotten enough investor funding to be in production for years now, so they will obviously make it if you've done some research.
@@DuesenbergJ It's a car, it only has an autocycle designation, but it's definitely a car.
@@bob-wo3ir Actually, Tesla's Roadster was similarly not a EV for everyone at $120K+ But they sold all that they could build. Similarly, Aptera will probably sell every one that they can build because it caters to a small but enthusiastic market. I hope the market is ready for this vehicle. Adding solar to electrics is a great idea.
Depending on your daily mileage the possibility of not needing to plug your car is very real.
Adding solar to any car makes sense. Go to work, leave the window raked enough to get airflow and turn on a fan that runs on solar.
Ummmm, my TESLA is Electric with Almost 400 mi range , and I ONLY need to charge it on 240v ONE per week.
