When I was a kid in grade 5, I thought, "Why don't they shape cars like a bird's wing so they would be more aerodynamic?" That was in the '70s. So glad I lived to see one.
They're still not in production.
I feel like this car is the 21st Century Miata. It's light, fun, two seats, and affordable. I love it!
Also feels like a 21st Century Messerschmitt "Kabinenroller"
Really does look like it would be fun to drive ... a lot of free fun miles.
Imagine if there was a way to remove the roof and make it a convertible for joy rides
@@keco185 that would be dope, but it'd probably HALF the range or something crazy like that
How are you going to change a flat tire?
Welcome back Aptera. We missed you, and the world needs you.
Yeah we need cheap electric cars. I worry about how uncomfortable that ride is with those tires though.
I know im asking the wrong place but does someone know a way to get back into an Instagram account?
I stupidly lost the login password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me!
@Guillermo Caspian Instablaster ;)
Cannot help to wonder as to the fragility of the front wheels in fender bender parking lot situations. Also, rear crash protection looks motorcycle level, as in very little. Lastly, as a vehicle with the practicality of a three wheeler trike cycle, will it be adapted by Joe/Jane in similar sales numbers? Thanks
@@Rhaman68 Why would the three wheels make it less practical? Everyone who's ever ridden it says it feels like a normal car.
As a German, I appreciate the maximum efficiency approach. So many energy wasters out there these days. Especially SUVs. This is the perfect commute car. Would buy it 100%. Getting free and clean juice while the car parks at work and then getting home in the best economy you can get. With style and comfort. Incredible.
Vielen Dank.
Tesla sollte Aptera Motors kaufen und das ganze dann mit hohen Volumen umsetzten. Der Innenraum ist ja schon passend gewählt. (;
Ich wünsche eurem Team und Aptera Motors noch viel Glück und Erfolg für die Zukunft.
Sehe ich genau so, das der Luftwiderstand bei E-Autos das wichtigste ist auf Langstrecke. Tesla hat das verstanden und auch der 1. IoniQ ist ein sehr gutes Auto geworden nach diesem Prinzip. Bei euch bekommt man im Stau wenigstens noch kostenlos Strom, alle anderen bekommen gar nix. (;

Butt will it have Fart mode?😂
I'm totally with you. Hopefully it will be available across the globe.
awesome to see that somebody is finally pushing an *efficient* vehicle.
for "normal" cars, adding solar barely makes a difference, they just need so much energy. for this, it's perfect.
There seems to be an incredible ecosystem coming into existence centered around modern engineering, electricity and a paradigm shift away from internal combustion. At the forefront of that shift we find companies like Tesla, new startups like Aptera and the Yoda of modern lean design, Munro and Assoc. On top of all that, we get to witness, in real time, the changing of the guard, the revolution is being televised and I feel so incredibly lucky to be here to see it.
And it is an honor to help it along. ( and more fun than measuring the air pollution from the fires in Kuwait), which I also did.
This design really resonates with me. This is taking a "less is more" approach to a whole new level and achieving otherwise nearly impossible feats in the process. This is very exciting stuff!
Will fail completely. Like all the other daydreamers did!
@@jurivlk5433 what makes you think it will fail? Having a car built with efficiency first sounds like a winner to me even without the solar component.
@@MrGamelover23 For many reasons I mentioned elsewhere. Like the catastrophic usage of space. It has the he dimensions of a Cadillac and seats only two! In the US this may not be important, in the rest of the world, it is very important. This "car" is a pure joke.

Sandy you are Manufacturing Yoda. One-piece cast you must! Mmm yess!
I’m glad Munroe is excited about this cat like I am.
Sandy, I really think that the person who came up with putting you on UA-cam deserves a raise, or at least a bonus. Before the public became aware of your company, (while I had heard of it, [I was disappointed about the Paradigm airplane not reaching production]}, many others had not heard of you. I believe that the exposure, and especially your competence and experience, helped bring you all of these three-wheeled vehicle startups. Here in Oregon, we are proud to follow Acrimoto, but they turned to you for help after they had working prototypes. I think they would have come to you sooner, if only they had known about you earlier. The same with Nobe, they came all the way from Estonia AFTER they heard about you. Again, they had a working prototype before they arrived. So, yeah, thank that person who talked you into UA-cam, he/she deserves it, big time. And now, here comes Aptera, reintroducing a three-wheeled electric vehicle after years of wanting. With these guys, try to talk them into at least a four-seater. Unless you live alone ar are a just-married couple, almost no one drives two-seaters. My apologies to Corvette owners, but, at heart, it's true. To be competitive, you need more seats. Anyway, good luck in your future, and may many more customers cross your door sill.
Great to see Steve and Chris back at the wheel again. You guys are a great combination: real-world engineers, no BS. Thx for the coverage.
Worked for Hewlett-Packard set up many sub assembly lines ,Desk Jet printer's, this is how you stream line production, sub assembly makes all the difference.
Yo Sandy! With all due respect to those youngsters in their 70s, my wife will soon turn 83. Fully retired, she still works 60-80 hours a week as a volunteer VP & board member coordinating rescues, fosters, transports and adoptions in 18 states for the nation's oldest and largest Dalmatian rescue organization. She is absolutely head over heels for an Aptera. She's more excited about this 3 wheeler than any car we've ever owned or even contemplated. Loves the fact that they offer an optional Pet Kit which includes pet steps, a pet divider, a water bowl, bags and a rear cover!!! Like you, I can't wait to lead foot an Aptera. Hoping to be the first tackle the Tail of the Dragon's 318 curves within 11 miles in an Aptera.
Dalmatians? She totally needs to get a white Aptera and add black spots!!
I would never have to charge. 20 miles round trip commute and Arizona sun!
Neither would I. 55 commute miles PER WEEK for me. OK, I could e-bike this distance, but I have this strange aversion to wintry cold, and wet, and we get quite a bit of the latter, all year round, in the UK. Lastly, one very important point - this is a self charging car. Not a hoax from Toyota.
Riding on sunlight!
Concern - no AC. cooling supplied via air over exterior skin. Summer in Arizona, exterior is not that cooling. The difficulty cooling is my greatest concern. how can 110 degree air over the exterior panels cool the inside?????
@@ricknplano1401 it does have A/C, the batteries are cooled with the exterior skin which I am not a fan of because I dont know how effective that can be. Is it using liquid to cool the batteries and that liquid is exchanging heat for the body panels ?
I doubt it would be enough for running AC
The first time someone comes up on someone camping in one of these, at night, will think a UFO landed. hehe. I love this vehicle. I want to be the guy camping. lol
Mass scale my friends, that is what we need for such vehicles.
@16:20 I love when Sandy's voice goes into falsetto. "That's something we've been talking to car companies about...for YEEEEERS!"
Sandy you forgot to talk & investigate with the two designers & engineers about the Optera capacity to maneuver through snow with 3 wheel & rear wheel traction with a wide tire ? I have some doubts about it. Please prove me wrong, because I love the ingenuity behind the car ! Good job every one.
The tires are not that wide. The traction control and ABS update 32 times per wheel revolution, far faster than most other systems. We will have full winter weather test results and footage from the Elaphe winter test track next season.
@@n.brucenelson5920 Thank you very much to giving the hope that the Aptera might have a decent potential in winter conditions. Hoping for the best for your next winter tests.
@@jacquesguillotte3270 I will be getting one of the early cars and will probably be able to report personal experience in snowy mountain passes with a two motor version. I have far more experience in these conditions than I would have preferred on motorcycles and no traction control. We will see.
Are you talking about putting wide tires on for winter? Narrower tires do better in snow and rain than wider tires. You don't have to compress as much snow, don't aquaplane so easily, and get way better efficiency.
I'm so happy to see Aptera back in business
The only downsides I have is the limited seats (I wish it had 3 or 4 seats) and how it much damage the wheel guards will take from gutter, potholes, undulating ground, off road environments etc.
I love the concepts and vision built into the Aptera. These guys check many important boxes on a macro level. GET THEM BUILT! Thanks
These guys are likeable! The design is futuristic, at the same time nice! I would order one...

It seems to have a great marketing potential in Israel. In spite of little to no infrastructure for electric vehicles in my country, I am seeing Tesla cars for the first time. With low power consumption and lots of sunshine hours even in many days in winter, the Aptera will feel at home and become a common sight. Your awareness to power efficiency, aerodynamics, and cost of production will hopefully make this project a success. Though I don't know what are the current legislations regarding three-wheelers in my country, this vehicle has a great potential.
Colin Chapman would be so proud of this company! This is pretty much a "Smart Car" I wouldn't mind being seen in!
I have never worked for anyone else. But I definitely want to go work for Aptera! 💫
The Aptera is such a lovely example of engineering spiral optimization. More aerodynamic allows less batteries which means less weight, requires less energy, so easier to cool,...
Do more with less.
Not to mention less expensive
GREat car, the best of all time, but really, Mr. Munro, Detroit is NOT the 'reverse of sunny 99% of the time" as you said at 3:53!
Charging at home or anywhere solves all problems and any sunny day, it's FREEEEEEE. What's not to love, in this super aerodynamic, all around fantastic efficient design? I am buying one!
Would LOVE to see a teardown explaining the engineering behind this!
I suspect Sandy might not do that in deference to his business relationship with Aptera. Not a complaint, just an opinion based on facts. IP is one of a startup's best assets and he wouldn't want to jeopardize that. He might disclose some secret sauce that could kill their business case or spend a lot of effort avoiding that and probably not be able to say much.
Not much to see really. Bog standard suspension, hub motors etc. The secret sauce is the cooling but unless you have a vehicle as efficient as their design (which would HAVE to be a copy btw since its is based in fluid dynamics and not aesthetics), it would be useless too you because it is not efficient enough for heavier applications.
@@davefroman4700 Aptera has at least 4 patents on this. You could look them up. Also, active development still ongoing.
If it is anything like the original 2E, The car will be shockingly simple. Where Tesla gets off on being "so advanced and technological" the Aptera is just so stremalined and efficient.
Proprietary technology is still in process and further patents certainly coming.
Nice to find some one who knows how to use music for Ytube.
Great for Western Australia. Thanks guys 😄👍

I love how hard everyone is trying to not say the "T" word.
That word occurred to me a lot when they showed the center screen software interface. (And I'm not complaining. If you're going to rip off someone's software design, it should be Tesla's.)

Rivian would be better. It has tow charging. And the RV blocks the air so the Aptera shape isn’t doing anything from behind.

Car like this is a PERFECT fit for solar glass with that huge back window. And I know those guys are coming to market right away too. I bet it would add close to 200 watts of charging to the system. Heck with what is going on with thin film solar applications today is won't be long before wrapping a car is a thing.
Full solar on this car is 700 peak watts at the beginning and the rear hatchback is completely covered.
@@n.brucenelson5920 I have not seen any pictures with the full solar I guess then because the back window is not covered in any material I have seen. A lot is about to change in solar applications none the less.
Certainly a lot of interest concepts, such as using the skin as a radiator or the well integrated side window to reduced the drag effect.
I wish there was some more information about the charging plug... and the central screen display... very similar to another EV also build in California !!!
This is really a completely new design product with no other equivalent, the selling price will be certainly one of the major component,
for a large scale adoption, compare to future compact EVs, like for example a Tesla Model 2 or VW ID.2 sold possibly around $25k.
OK, skin cooling is awesome, interior screens to replace wing mirrors are great, powering from solar panels is def 21st century, 4-piece body assemblies are beyond futuristic, in-wheel motors are highly advanced technology, BUT, let's get down to what is totally the most important thing to certain interested buyers: can you fit an acoustic contrabass inside this car? :-)
Probably take up the passenger seat. That boat tail has tons of space.
Not the first time I have seen this question. My guess is yes, but I will be happy to test it when I take delivery if we don't know the answer yet.
I want in! The black is stunning, but I would want mine in a copper/bronze color with black interior. The only thing about the car i don't like is the dashboard. Vehicle info such as speed, range/charge, battery/inverter temp, etc. should be eyes forward. A proper instrument cluster ahead of the steering wheel. and the center screen looks like an afterthought. As if someone forgot to incorporate it into the design, and at the last minute installed a small TV with a wall-mount. BUT.. At least they fixed it from other interior views I have seen. The screen was vertical, and now it's properly horizontal. So that's a plus. I hope that there is a dark theme to that UI. That bright white would be harsh in low light conditions. Especially from such a large screen. Even if it were dimmed. It's needs a true dark theme with black screen and white text. The rearview screens.. Well.... I don't see those making it into production. Yet. Hold up. Let me re-phrase that. The rearview camera and screens system MAY make production models, but there will be mirrors. Albeit small ones, but mirrors nonetheless. The center rearview screen will most likely be covered in mirrored glass.
Finally, as I have mentioned before on another Aptera video, as well as on a video about some other 3-wheeled, car with those outrigger front wheels, that the "pods" or fenders of those wheels need to have very visible front and rear marking lights. Apteras hind-end is wide, and the tail-lights are nearly as wide as her front-wheel stance. But I'll present the scnario(s) I have given before. Lets say that it's dark, Your Aptera is the matte black beauty shown here. You shouldn't do it, but you pull off to the left of the street to pick up your friend/date/spouse/SO whoever. Rather than going to the end of the block and turning around to pull over to the right. So you're there, waiting. Some knucklehead is coming down the street a bit close to parked cars. Knucklehead sees that your car is narrow, judging by the width of the headlights. He does not see the extended front wheels beyond them as the thin amber strips are not visible due to the glare of the Apteras headlights. (worse if his windshield is funky) WHAM! Your 3-wheeler just became a leaning 2-wheeler. I would strongly suggest some kind of driving lights on the pods. as well as some noticeable red marker lights on the rear-facing side. Since the pods turn with the wheels, you may even have the wheels turned toward the curb, further directing the narrow strip of amber light away from forward where is is needed most. All the videos I have seen of the Aptera, those lights don't seem to be larger/bright enough to be effective clearance markers. And That just brought up another can o' worms.. U.S. regulations state that turn signals can not be mounted on moving or hinged pieces of the bodywork. The pods are essentially hinged bodywork. I could be in error though. Does the MC classification negate that regulation?
Overall, Aptera is amazing. I give 9.5 out of 10 if what is promised makes production. Again, my only major gripe is the dash with its tacked-on look of the screens, and the lack of an instrument cluster. But I'd still drive one and love it. Even if it will have antiquated Mirrors on it.
Cammi, the video is just the first prototype. They are building two more development vehicles now which will go through a whole series of validation tests. These will result in changes and improvements to the production models, which will continue to be improved even after production starts.
@@n.brucenelson5920 I'm certain that this lovely example is.. what do they say?.. "This is not even my final form."? My little nit-picks on the dash are hopeful corrections, and my concerns over clearance lights I'm sure will be addressed. I have full confidence that the final, production model will be something to behold. And something even greater to drive. ☺
Thanks for your input Mr. Nelson.

This looks fun and awesome... With kids this is unrealistic for my family but I do love it.
I was never much of a car person, but there is a lot of interesting things happening in the automotive world with electric drive, solar energy, and autonomy. Aptera is my new "gotta have one" vehicle. It's very Tesla-like inside which is a huge plus for me.
Very refined design. Beautiful.
A tear drop kissing the air...
I just have to click like right away when I see a new Sandy video
I had no idea about the adaptive skin cooling system!! Super cool!
22:40 - cooling is just like blood vessels in a body, albeit less sophisticated, but very good idea.
the body's actual method of rejecting unwanted heat is evaporative cooling, not radiative, elephants do the radiative trick to save water.
@@edc1569 You also have some passive cooling in any body
Perhaps they put in small water emitters to "sweat" the surface when it is appropriate.
The sheer efficiency of this vehicle makes the Aptera tremendously appealing. From an ecological point of view, you look at cars as being those enormously heavy lumpy pieces of steel that you carry along for no reason whatsoever, but this turns around the case with an entirely new philosophy and it's so refreshing! The Aptera prototype really is taking 2 aerodynamically inefficient passengers and their luggage and putting a super-sleek hull around them plus adding some wheels to make it roll.
To put that in perspective, the vehicle still needs about ten times the energy of a L1 electrically powered bicycle, but it almost feels like these technologies, a concept like an Aptera and something like an electrically powered velomobile, are converging. I'm still convinced public transport can also get us far with the same objective in mind, but to me, these awesome developments are only a good sign that transportation is being rethought and that we can finally leave behind our idiot 1.5+ tonne blocks that only really destroy the climatalogical conditions we live in.
What about cooling the interior? Oregon has the month of August that has 100 degree days. This makes the interior of a car very very hot.
Climate control is rated from -20 to 125 F.
This is what a Colin Chapman electric Lotus would look like. Simplify and add lightness.
One question I would like to know is about a spare tire and the practically of changing a tire as needed. Would love to hear about that in an upcoming video, thanks.
Many cars don’t have spare tires anymore. Green slime is sufficient for most tire issues.
@@natrone23 The trouble with GREEN SLIME is it DESTROYS YOUR TIRE, making a $20. patch turn into a $200. dollar replacement. Here, they're all facing left so you don't get the visual sense they're talking to each other. It's a small thing. It's called the 180 degree rule in film.
Hope they get into a production this time. I have been following Aptera early on.
Really like the fact that Munro Associates will be deeply involved with Aptera. It's fantastic vehicle. Please show us on the channel as much as you can about manufacturing miracles that this cooperation will create. I'm very interested in crowed finding Aptera.
I saw the original Aptera at the XPrize Progressive Auto prize award ceremony in DC - Loved the vehicle then, glad to see it didn't die!!
Love the design! Awesome project
The quote is at Min 19, sec 10... The 2 mirrors.
19:15 "The side-view mirrors on an F-150 have more aerodynamic drag than the whole Aptera."
Sandy, one of my concerns regards Right to Repair laws. Louis Rossman is perhaps the most vocal proponent. He repairs Apple laptops and has been fighting Apple for gluing and soldering down components so they can not be repaired when broken. Tesla is doing this too. If your car breaks down after warranty you can not fix it. Tesla will shut down software making your car, that you've bought and payed for, inoperable. What does Aptera plan to do? Will you be able to fix the car on your own after your warranty ends? Making the Aptera modular and fixable will give Aptera a huge leg up on the competition.
Right to repair was supported by Aptera from the beginning.
@@n.brucenelson5920 This is great news. They are thinking outside of the box. I wish that a talented group of engineers and designers would break off from Apple and design a modular, fixable computer than will cripple Apple's lock in this space. This world is filled with talent. We need innovation. Aptera is bringing it.
Awesome car, seems more production ready than I expected. I can't wait for delivery. Thanks for creating the video!
How are you going to change a flat tire? Think about that one.
Could you comment on the lift coefficients front and rear.
I know that with alpha there was about 25 lbs of downforce designed in at 65 mph at the expense of some drag. I don't know how this has changed for production.
