I never seen a duct tape cyborg, not even of 80s Hollywood movies.
I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the fact that this device interacts only with your vocal cords and inner eardrums, NOT with your inner thoughts and consciousness. It picks up on deliberate vocalizations. So it's essentially like talking to Siri without opening your mouth.

@@AM-fh7ek Then you don't have to participate in any future implants and just rely on these more private devices. I don't see a world where these implants would become necessary in currently free countries as those kind of regulations haven't been implemented for tvs, computers and phones. You'll be fine.

@@tempname8263 Elon has been talking about implants and wires into the brain, doesn't sound very appealing. If you have any more details I'd like to hear more but this simple subvocal interface seems very viable right now.

Incredible technology! I can understand why people are scared and sceptic about it's usage. With all technology there are pros and cons, and this kind of technology falling in the wrong hands could be catastrophic, but it also has so much potential to do good and enhance our lives!

More impressive than LLMs? It's really cool but AlterEgo is basically just a quiet way to connect to google assistant/Siri through sound and vibrations.
Here is something really interesting, look up "EEG and fMRI in Brain neural activity decoding". The quality of image decoding they've reached is insane.

Grades are just an arbitrary evaluation of your ability to memorize and link pieces of information together anyway. The sooner they become useless, the better imo.

The researcher's intention seems good. But I recall a story called 'fire bird' by Osamu Tezuka. In the story, this kind of device was used for brain wash by a dictator. Anything you think, the dictator always FIX your idea using the inner voice. (it's an old story, that device used as a mask.) The main character in the story shout 'please stop talking from my inside', and try to cut his head off to stop the voice. Since the device is a punishment device against the dictator and he cannot remove the device. This technology is such a sharp double edge sword. If it is used for the people, I see the benefit, but if it was abused, I am terrified.
What if it unintentionally spits the evil plans that I have in my head for my enemies?

So it basically records everything you ever say. Probably anything getting through your throat as well, like your blood pressure and stuff, and in the future any signal you send to your limbs and who knows what. Also thinking out loud is now a dangerous activity and they can probably catch a lot of thoughts that were not for them to hear. More features like gps and health management will definitely be developped afterwards. Really looking forward to it.

After reading that book about Theranos (Bad Blood), I can't help but being skeptical about the progress he has displayed. How do we know these results were really live?? How do we know it wasn't pre-recorded?
If he really wanted to convince us, he should have asked the host to pick a random person in the audience to ask a question so we can see what happens.

When you consider the last real game changing human to computer interface was the mouse I'd say the next large step in computers is increasing how fast we can interact with them and how seamless this becomes so the laptop or the phone become obsolete and we can continue on down the metaphorical street and our digital world becomes as seem less and walking, talking and thinking.
This is amazing and scary at the same time. It gives hope to those who needs help in communicating like Doug who has ALS, but this also gives me all the scary scenarios in Black Mirror.

Seems like a cool way to communicate privately in an office setting if on some type of blockchain network. Maybe even DARPA uses something like this.

Maybe I've misunderstood, but it sounds like this technology does not give us any new abilities at all - it just removes the need to speak. I struggle to see the benefits of this type of human-computer interaction compared to a human simply typing into a computer or speaking to it (except obviously in the case of people with disabilities). I don't see how having a computer inside our head, compared to outside of our body is any kind of advantage. We should remember that when we use computers and the internet as we do now - without physical integration of brain and machine - we are already augmenting our intelligence, just not in a cool sci-fi way. When he says what are the implications of this technology 'silent texting', 'automatic translation' etc. they don't actually seem that amazing compared to the similar technology that already exists - except for helping disabled people which is obviously incredibly cool and important, is this stuff actually useful for the rest of us? (I'm not an expert on neurotechnology or anything so genuine question and don't take my ideas too seriously).
I would love to use my thoughts to engine search something instead of using my phone or laptop. A little over a decade ago it was a strange idea to carry around a cellphone as well

I think the part of the presentation where the subject says the weather was silly, as he probably already knew the weather. It would have been better if he had been asked a question he didn’t already know the answer to.
The answer it is not the important thing. It is just the ouput. The very interesting thing is the way they are able to get the input.
@@ampostata exactly, this is NOT voice recognition.. is reading from the nerves usds to say a word... the AI read the patterns and correctly discovers what the person wants to say (without say it!)... Sooner or later, would be a brain reader.. the designer knows it, but wanted to start without ethical challenges...

@@newrev9er Many animals have their own methods of speech, such as elephants and dolphins. If they could learn to use this the AI could translate to human concepts.
Babies can yet deliberately form words, so it probably wouldn't work with them, however, this technology could possibly pave the way for new tech that can read what some more intelligent animals (i.e., apes) are trying to say in a way that is comprehensible for humans

Actually I remember reading a paper about how trained model was able to reproduce what you are watching in realtime literally.
So I am not saying above technology would be sufficient but its well known that your brain instantly develop picture of things you are in desire of.
Eg child crying due to hunger might develop picture of bottle that satisfies his/her need everytime (correlation pattern).

It reminds me of the Stem in the movie Upgrade.
If those demonstrations were an accurate representation of where they're at with speech recognition without data from lip&jaw movements, then they're way ahead of the competition in creating valuable technology. Other than that, it's more likely to become a wearable Alexa than the key to a transhumanist utopia the presenter seems to think it is.

The possibilities of this going wrong are so many. For example, who can guarantee that what you deliberately record to use as a perfect memory (as he said ) won't be available for third party to be red or even worse to augment. Someone could literally change "your" memories... I am not saying the technology is bad, but the people can be - if we ignore this and act like everyone's moral it is like if body would ignore cancerous cell and just let it grow instead of fighting it. Humanity could do great things and technology is the way, we just need to be extremely careful. I support this, but first we really need to build awareness before we merge with AI.

This device can be modified for medical purposes to use on coma patients to help them communicate with doctors and family. This idea was something I thought about immediately after seeing this video on 22/07/2023. I live in South Africa Gauteng and my name is Bianke Du Plessis and I heard many medical stories about doctors saying people can hear and understand you while the patient is in comatose state.
Is there a way to sign up for a trial? My daughter has Autism and has issues processing communication. I would love nothing more than to know what is going on in her mind to know how to better her life.

This seems like a stepping stone to Neuralink to me. Like something like this could be commercialized within 5 years, and then Neuralink would come 5-15 years later.
