      So very true I'm not a fan of anti Chrysler. See what I did there. I've had three dodges all of which went out between 33,000 / 55,000 MI that's including the engine differential and let's not forget the electronics yeah endless money pits.

      Well to be fair these people aren't buying a truck for work, they are buying it for looks/status more than likely. They look no farther into the vehicle then the outside and the monthly payment cost.

    Grew up in a Ford family. Have owned 3 Ford trucks and 3 Ford cars. (sold each with under 100k) Cost more to repair than they were worth. Bought an 03 Chevy. Great truck. Traded with 205k and running good. Most costly repair was an oil pump. When I traded looked at Toyota, Nissan, Ford and Chevy. Stuck with Chevy due to great previous experience and had the best highway ride. Note: averaged 26mpg on my first 1000 mile trip with the 5.3ltr. Truck has @ 12k miles now with avg 19.8mpg up from 14.8 from my 03. Love the truck but have concerns over paint quality. Rock chips etc. Wife drives a Toyota, kids have Chevy, BMW, Ford, Mazda, and a Nissan. Drive what you like. Talk trash if you must. But I believe there are good and bad in each brand.

      I’m pretty sure GM sells the most units pretty much every year. GMC and Chevy are considered 2 brands is why Ford can make that “claim”.
      I have a 2016 Ram for work and a 2014 Raptor for personal use, so I’m not a “Chevy guy” LOL Actually, I think GM is ridiculously overpriced. Your new Ford truck is way ahead of the competition so far, for sure!

    Guys just bought a chevy 2018 truck. I love the 18 inch wheels great for off-road. I gave the front a 3 inch lift and it looks awesome. But what I really love about it is that it's a great work truck. The back bumber side step is a plus. Plus when u open the tailgate it slowly drops such is cool when only one hand is available. I got the z71 or version, which I love because I can fit 6 people in it. The more expensive trucks are limited to 5. The break trailers system is awesome great when towing I finally used it once. On long trips to the coast I'm getting 25.7 miles per gallon. But I didn't use the cruise control, I feel like it kinda uses more gas. It's a 5.3 liter engine sounds ok, so I'm getting an exhaust system.

      You might consider that all GM engines have Direct Injection, which have intake valve carbon build up problems. The Ford 5.0 V8 is still Multi-Port, so are the Ram Hemi and Tundra. The 17' F-150's 3.5 Ecoboost is both.

    • @R777-RLM
      @R777-RLM 8 років тому +1

      I agree that the GM trucks are the best looking inside and out. To bad GM didn't stay with Multi Port injection, or go with the dual MPI/DI like Toyota's new 3.5 , and the 17' F-150's new 3.5 ecoboost. The dual injection should take care of the carbon build up problem of DI.

    Until a month ago I had my fourth Ford pickup, a 2014 F150 STX 4x4 Sport double cab. It had the 5.0 Coyote engine and it rode extremely smooth like a Lincoln, had tons of power and torque and I consistently got 17mpg on average. My only dislikes were the steel door panels wobbled quite noticeably when closing the door and the front door had to be opened to open the rear doors which made grocery getting a major PITA. It was also quite a climb to get in and out of but, once in it drove amazingly. Anyhow, as suggested at the end of this video, I decided to switch it up and go with a new GMC Sierra 1500 Z71 4x4 double cab. The above video descriptions of the ride and the more substantial feel of the Silverado vs the Ford match my experience even though my Ford was the last year that was made of steel. I feel there's plenty of power in the 5.3L engine although with only 130miles on the engine I'm far from finding out how much power it really has. I wont do any WOT runs until she's clocked over 500 miles. But so far I'm ecstatic with my new purchase as the GMC runs rings around my 2014 Ford in the styling and features departments. It also sets about 4 inches closer to the ground than my jacked up factory Ford was which means I don't have to free fall getting out of the Sierra. Both products are good American made trucks, I give the Ford a pretty good edge in smoooth ride quality, especially over manhole covers and train tracks, the Sierra has the edge in extreme quiet, noiseless driving with the windows up and seems to grip and track the road much more surefootedly and with a much more solid and substantial feel than the more fleet footed Ford. I guess the two issues that drove me away from new Fords is the aluminum body and the lack of automatic locking rear differential. I never really thought the F150 gained that much extra traction in the snow in 4x4 mode on the stock tires so I'm hoping the Z71 will do better.

    My dad had a 2015 F-150 Platinum. he's always been a Chevy guy but he did his research and decided on the Ford. For the first month or so it was amazing. but then it was in the shop every week after that. He said it always sounded like the transmission was about to go. And he tried to get a box cover for it but in the shop the guy who was installing it went to bolt it in and it ripped the entire bed apart. Literally. Aluminum just does not work for truck beds. That's kind of what pushed him over the edge and now he's got the 2016 GMC Sierra Denali and he's so happy with it. He said getting a Ford was the biggest mistake he ever made. Now I'm not a hater I'm not going to sit here and trash talk Ford, because it was a nice truck, the interior was really nice. and everythjng about it was cool but the Denali definitely felt better in every way. it's really about what you prefer, but from family experience, Chevy's last a lot longer and are a lot more reliable than Fords. I drive a 1997 Chevy Tahoe myself with almost 400,000kms on it and it's my favourite vehicle ever. it's the 5th vehicle I've owned and it's never let me down. The thing is a beast with its 5.7L V8. but unfortunately the last owners didn't treat it the greatest so the rust is starting to take over. but I'm currently looking at another Tahoe that's a 99 and in mint condition. because I love my Tahoe so much I want the same thing. My mom has a 2012 base model Silverado and she bought it brand new. 4 years now and not a single little issue with it at all. Fords are good trucks. but Chevys are definitely better from what I've experienced. I would like to see how Dodge does against the Ford and Chevy though.

      Recovery Hooks
      High Capacity Air Cleaner
      Eaton Heavy-Duty Automatic Locking Rear Differential

      The Rancho shocks they use are on the low end, shightly better than the base shocks. Skids are plastic..PLASTIC!! The so-called "A/T" tires are in name only. Make no mistake, those are street tires. And nobody runs 20" rims and low profile tires off road. Ever. High capacity air filter, who cares. Recovery hooks sure, I'll give you that one. Hill descent control, maybe. The only thing worth the money is the locking diff, which, doesn't come standard. It's still an option for the Z71. Bottom line, the Z71 is little more than an appearance package.

Obviously there are some people who like the solid black plastic everything everywhere interior but Im not a fan. I like the break up of having a few different colors inside. It makes the truck (to Me) feel like its more upscale and expensive. Not cheap and misplaced as this guy said it made him feel. JMHO.

    I live in the Aleutians. I am the second owner of a 1997 F-250 HD 4x4. Extended cab. I have had it over 22 years. There is a similar aged Chevy Silverado 1500. Extended cab. The original owner had it at least 20 years. The frame had rusted through on the current owner. She's broken in two now. I am still driving my Ford. Granted my truck body is rusting through now. But the frame is solid. Could argue the 1/2 ton frame vs. a heavy duty 3/4 ton frame.. hard to say. Both trucks were carefully taken care of majority of their lives though.

Sure ford might be known for bad more transmission problems but Chevy has more electrical problems. It’s all opinion, take care of it and it will take care of you. But if you really wanna be taken care of.. skip out on the American products. I agree 100% with the bed liner deal, my dad always puts a bed liner in his truck beds. When you haul and use your truck for truck things a bed liner is highly recommended and kinda a no brainer for the fact that it's also a quicker way to clean the bed out.

  • @chadsteele1
    @chadsteele1 8 років тому +19

    I've never like the trim in the Fords. they've always been a class behind on their trucks interior imo. It looks very clunky always has. No consistency. The exterior looks great. Though more needs to be done on the bed if it truly can be damaged that easily. GMC/Chev have always had better more comfortable interiors. Since around 2002 and beyond and for me on the Chev glad they revamped the front end from the first model, to a single light, it just looks so much better. The Gmc's awesome front end. Great review.

    I bought a new 2016 Tundra 5.7 4x4 supercrew or whatever they call it, in July of 2016. Plenty of power, torque. I'd always had fords, but decided to drive a Tundra, ended up buying it. My wife wanted my F-150 4x4 supercrew and got it. All it has needed was regular maintenance, oil & filters, still running good at 220,000. It's been a good truck. Still is. I did have to replace the alternator a few years ago, no big deal. Actually, all my Fords have been good. Maybe Chevy's are too, I've just never owned one. In South TX, you'll see a lot more rusty Chevy's than Fords.

You looked at in from a perspective of a regular individual. that lives a regular life and perhaps occasionally needs to load up the truck to move or tow things around . everything you said about both trucks is true you showed no preference to either one . you handled every category in a professional matter every other review seems to criticize trucks to much because they dont do what the review wants it to do instead of judging it based on what the manufacturer worked hard on to improve . lots of comments praising old trucks over new for many valid reasons. I concur. 98 chevrolet 2500 with 5.0v8 that has 274,000. runs incredibly strong, totes around two loaded tool boxes and a ladder rack with several ladders daily. gets decent milage around 12 to 14 loaded down. I have had it for 5 years and driven it a hundred and fifteen thousand miles with very few issues. only thing I've had a big issue with was cheap replacement fuel pumps. you can blame that on all the parts stores selling junk. maintenance is low and the amount of things my truck has on it to break are very low compared to newer trucks. sure it doesn't have the power or towing capability of newer trucks. big deal. not many people are towing campers every weekend. I have a 16ft trailer I tow regularly and don't have an issue. I just take a few extra minutes to get to the job. I'll keep my no options easy to maintain truck.

The fact that the fords are pushing v6s to the max makes me wonder the stress on that engine. I feel more comfortable in a v8 even with a little less power just because its been natural in trucks built for the trucks. So what are your opinions on that?

    In all seriousness the bed test isn't unrealistic. For people that use it as a work truck or farm truck, the bed will take a lot of abuse. My grandfather had some holes in his steel bed after a few years. Of course he was a lifetime farmer but my point is that everyone doesn't buy trucks to stroll around with. Some people work the shit out of their truck and they need to know that it will stand up to the challenge.

  • @lylemsharp
    @lylemsharp 7 років тому +14

    Three things here:
    1. Ford can take that insurance and repair over the top expensive all aluminum body that saves them 80 lbs and shove it. Truck beds need to be steel so you can throw small logs into the back without puncturing the bed.
    2. Ford needs to stop reinventing their entire drive train every year. Their reliability numbers are atrocious and the constant engine fire recalls are just terrifying to me. I prefer to get to my destination with an engine light on as opposed to shutting the engine down and waiting for a tow truck in a best case scenario.
    3. Bang for the buck analysis for towing or cruising is going to put you in a Silverado EVERY time.

      Thats because nobody owned a Chevy or a Dodge in your town, LMAO Hey, maybe the Ford owners take care of their trucks, by changing the oil, the filters, the brakes. OR maybe the Ford owners know how to work on their own Trucks where the Chevy and Dodge owners were just not as smart and had to pay the dealer to work on their trucks???? HMMMM

    Owned 3 F-150's previously and really liked them! Really good trucks and were very reliable. Purchased a 2016 Silverado recently and while it's been too soon to judge reliability, I can say it is my favorite truck yet! Like you said, everything inside the cab just makes sense and the 5.3 is a solid motor! I have the 3.42 gears so it has plenty of get up and go over the 3.08 I test drove. So like he said, be open to new things and you might find you like it! I do stay American loyal however! (Yes I know most parts are foreign). That's my 2 cents!

    I prefer GMC (chevy) but I do like the Ford interior. I've grew up with GMC so that's what I'm going with and I'll stick with them, but Ford makes a pretty damn good truck. Dodge is no exception either. All the trucks are pretty awesome but growing up with GMC, I'll take a GMC over anything any day!

    There is no truck today from any manufacturers that are worth the money they are asking for.
    I just keep the trucks i purchased back from the 90s

  • @JustAGuy85
    @JustAGuy85 8 років тому +8

    They haven't made a real truck since the early 90's.
    300 i6/302 and 351w V8, 460 V8 in some 70's to 80's trucks.
    Ya get no less than a bulletproof engine, no less than a Ford 9" or Dana parts.
    You get T18's and NP435 4 speed with low, manual locking hubs, NP205 and NP208 transfercases in the half ton trucks.
    Yes they lack in power. But, let me spend half of what you spend on a new or newish Truck, and I'll still have twice the truck.
    These new trucks have big ratings, but they won't go in the mud or on snowy roads like my swb 86 5.0EFI F150 NP435 31x10.50 15", Ford 9" Rear, overload springs, and so far, INVINCIBLE. Rotella T6 5W40 for the win. It's kept my 5.0 EFI revving under hard loads for nearly a decade of just my life.
    I hate being that guy.
    Yes, new trucks are faster, have better brakes (not sure about better braking than my 4700lbs truck, but probably), they feel better with a load behind them because of their extra weight.
    By that's where it ends. I can pull tailors of mulch or 4k pounds of roofing on my tailor. When I have a tailor load of dirt, I also have my bed filled.
    Unlike these 8 speed automatics that would beat me in the quarter mile with the same load, I can do this many times a year and have never had an issue.
    As if some 20 year newer truck would do better.
    Especially when I go out bumpy, twisty landscape... I can go low on the transfer case, and 1st gear, and idle up any hill around with any load. 1st hear in high is still too much. But I'd rather have too much than too little.
    Last but not least, whether I'm blessed with my truck's exact stance, or with little 31''x10.5 15" tires are just perfectly designed and plenty for size, or the 4700 lbs weight plus unlimited gearing options through tcase and tranny with a fuel injected 302 is what gets me through all the obstacles.
    I wouldn't drive a new truck where I go. An old, 89 Tacoma highly lifted, 40-44" tires, things I don't remember, and something about being geared according to the stickers on the truck.
    Yes, it looked mean. Yes, it turned heads. No, it didn't have the power of a V8 to spin the tires fast enough.
    Even then, it couldn't creep where I creeped. It needed run and goes to only still get stuck.
    Maybe it has more to do with weight on specific terrains.
    I dunno. But... this old *I'm the second owner* 1986 F150 is a testament to when they built real vehicles. The late 60's, and especially the 70's and 80's... Those are the, while some may say ugly, they are the most reliable vehicles, period, in distance, work output, or simply crash resistance and bad weather.
    I change the oil extra early, for now, with RT6 5W40, 6 quarts, Motorcraft FL1A. That's a recipe for steady cleaning and longevity... those products are great. My entire engine's inside was black when I got it. had a Kendall 10W30 sticker on the window.
    Lots of receipts. I imagine for 0k miles to 109k miles (when I got it), those 3000 mile Kendall conventional oil changes just didn't cut it. It is one of the last oils I would ever choose to use, but at the same time it was a much older oil than the oils of today. I've been using T6 5W40 for 10-11 years with an FL1A oil filter.
    Got it at 109k miles, now I'm around 166k miles. Needs nothing, runs great, zero issues. wouldn't sell it for anything.
    Especially not a newer, lesser truck.
    And I already have a GSXR K6. So... really, I've got all the truck I need around here, and if I need speed, well, 1st gear to 3rd gear on the GSXR K6, alone, hit around 130ish mph? at 16,000 RPM. It truly sounds like an F1 Indy car at WOT.
    So, yeah, I'm a ford man. The truck was only mentioned because of the video. But, hey, feel free to call me out and show me what these new Road kings *can do* that my 86 5.0 EFI, NP208 transfer case, NP435 4 speed transmission, Dana 44 TTB front axle, Ford 9" @ 3.50 rear axle and nice overload springs combined over rear springs, 31x10.50 15" Goodyear Wrangler Authorities *can't do*.

      The 4.6 is probably THE longest lasting engine, despite the original coming out in 1991. The 4.6 goes and goes and goes. That's just what I've seen. 2v, 3v, or 4v, they can rev in a stang or work in a taxi or cop car and go 200,000 miles looking like new on the inside of the engine.
      They are underrated in speed. Not the new "5.0", it is smoking everything, but a 4.6 2v with gears, CAI, exhaust and tune is another level of 2v Mustangs.

      Yes, my first car was a Firebird, then my mom got a Trans Am WS.6 LS1 6 speed, and it ended up having many problems... many. It was pure junk. Sexy, yes, but pure junk. the power steering cooling accessory kept leaking power steering fluid into the antifreeze. the clutch couldn't get enough pressure. These both are highly common problems. Then to beat it all, her 3v Mustang GT was notably faster than that supposed "God given" LS1.
      Stay away from GM products. Then stay away from Dodge/ Chrysler. Go with Ford, they only American vehicle manufacturer that doesn't put out junk after junk after junk for years upon years.
      Can you say... 700R4/4L60E.
      GM can't make a 4 speed automatic to save their lives. Those went in Camaros, Firebirds, Corvettes, at least the 1/2 (1500) Chevrolet trucks in the mid 90's and stuff.
      NONE OF THEM LASTED. Average 4L60E life.... 90,000 miles... max average, at that.
      Ford used the 4R70W in Crown Vics, Thunderbirds, Mustang GT's, and some half-ton trucks, at least, if not even 3/4 ton trucks.
      All facts. If you don't want to hear them, block me. But these are my true stories and why I won't even look at a GM to buy.

    • @Mindphaser98
      @Mindphaser98 8 років тому

      I can definitely agree with you on GM's 4 speed autos.
      My first car was a '97 Grand Prix GTP. Unbelievably fast car - 0-60 in around 6 seconds depending on how well you could keep the wheels from spinning. It could do the longest holeshot burnouts too, none of that brake standing or parking brake burnout shit, just raw power.
      Supercharged 3.8 V6 was still both reliable and powerful at 146,000 miles, but the transmission was garbage. The lines were prone to rusting and leaking fluid and it slipped badly in first gear. Ironically, I had a retired master mechanic tell me to put Ford transmission fluid in it, and it actually helped a little bit with the slipping.
      My second car was a '94 Mercury Grand Marquis. I just wanted a land yacht with a V8 and RWD, could've ended up with a Caprice, but the Merc was conveniently for sale just down the road for $1000. Odometer was stuck at 238,000 miles and after finding some service records and estimating how much I had driven it in the last 2 years, I estimate that it has at least 250,000 now.
      It doesn't run perfect, has a few problems which were probably my fault because I'm a teenager and I drive like a dick. The engine sometimes coughs and sputters when I put my foot down, but that could be because I don't have a complete exhaust (just an H-pipe and tiny glasspacks.)
      I had one odd instance where the oil light came on and the engine started knocking. I pulled off to the side of the road, shut the car off, checked under the hood for anything out of the ordinary - nothing, closed the hood and started the car - no more knocking no more light. I shrugged my shoulders and carried on.
      The transmission fluid appears to have never been changed since the stone age, it pretty much looks like used motor oil. But, the transmission still shifts smoothly and doesn't slip and it puts up with the abuse of me up shifting and downshifting through low-range. The only thing that killed my experience with this car was the transmission crossmember. The crossmember rotted and then eventually broke and dropped the transmission down onto my exhaust, which surprisingly, held up for the drive home.
      My current daily, which I had just bought 2 months ago, is a '96 F-150 with a 300 I6 and an M5OD. Originally, I didn't want to buy another Ford, I just intended to buy something with a manual transmission. But, when I found out about the 300 I6, I immediately started looking at older Ford trucks. I ended up finding this truck and bought it for $1600. It only has 76,000 miles on it and it runs like a champ, so I figure it was a good deal.
      The thing that appeals to me, is that it's just a basic work truck. 2wd, LWB, regular cab, manual windows and locks, it didn't even have a tachometer, had to put one in myself. Not too many bells and whistles to go bad like my Merc. Not sure how I feel about the 2.73 open rear diff though and putting on 32 x 11.5 mud tires certainly ain't helping me there, but the tires will still chirp in when I hit 2nd, so that's something.
      Sorry for giving you my life story, but that's been my experience so far.

      While i agree that the 4L60E is a terrible trans, I've seen some go to no more than 200,000. I love OBS Chevy trucks and there's an Facebook page where I've seen a lot of problems with those transmissions going out on people from anywhere from 100,000 to 200,000 miles.Now I currently have a 97 Yukon and a 94 Blazer both with those trans, and all original trucks with the Yukon having 206,000 and the Blazer with 260,000. now I've had my Yukon for 4 years now and the only problem I've ever had with it is cracked flywheel, universal joints, and saggy springs. i just bought the Blazer that runs like a champ and and am currently restoring it from the old owners abuse to the interior and exterior (minus a trans fluid leak i just found out about that locked up the trans).Plus my dad has a 1989 Chevy G20 conversion van that hes had for a daily driver for over 13 years with no problems. Now on the other hand i have a 2000 Silverado with a 5.3 and a 4L60E that was rebuilt around 160,000 miles and to top it off it terrible job done. the reason i bought it was because the guy i bought it off of thought he spun a bearing but really it was the torque converter bolts were loose. so it was a cheap fix but it'll do some weird shit and act up every now and then. beside that and a lifter knock, which is my fault, she runs good. plus my dad also had a 95 Grand Prix with the 3.1, loved that car but the trans was complete shit. it would always slip and never move from a red light. then we replaced the trans and it was good for about a year or 2 and it went again. when that trans went, the guy who had it at the time junked it and never seen it again and i still miss it even though it was a shitty, beat up, bright red Pontiac. Oh yea and don't get me started on Chevy 10 bolts....

      jldude84 It's just a matter of personal preference. I dislike newer trucks because I think they're glorified SUVs with a truck bed, but I like simple, base model cars and trucks because they're usually easier to work on and there aren't many bells and whistles to break. After trying to work with the cramped engine bay of my Grand Marquis, I've grown to appreciate the amount of room underneath the hood of my F-150 with the 300.
      My Grand Marquis had plenty of bells and whistles that either didn't work, or annoyed me enough to make me disable them. For instance, I removed the fuse for ABS and traction control because I don't like the car doing things for me - I'm perfectly capable of pumping the brakes myself and I know what to do when the wheels spin.
      Just what I prefer.

    I daily the 5.0 The only difference is mine is the 10 speed and stx package. And driving around as the truck should be driven I get like 15 mpg in town, conservatively I get like 20 in town mpg. It’s really hard to drive conservative considering how badass the truck feels. Ford did a great job on this one and has them reasonably priced
