  • From the co-creator of Sierra's Quest For Glory games comes the original Castle of Dr. Brain from 1991 for DOS PCs! And you know it pretty quickly from the sheer quantity of puns on offer.

Cool retrospective, thanks! I rate designing and developing Castle of Dr. Brain as among the best times I had at Sierra. One of these decades I'd like to make a similar game with more advanced puzzles and challenges. How about a 100x100x100 3D elevator maze? Kidding!

While writing the episode, Clint googles inventor of elevator (if not already known), finds a large enough digital image of Otis, prints it out, takes time to frame it, and finds a candle to light... all for a 4 second gag. Nice work!

(The other was in the VGA QFG1 remake. When you're being quizzed by Erasmus' gargoyle, if he asks you "What is your quest?" one of the responses is "I want to be a pirate!" If you select it, he says "Boy have you got the wrong game!" and sends you back down the mountain.)

It so weird seeing Sierra games from the era when they were based in California. That envelope for the registration as a Coarsegold California address, and I live in Coarsegold now. It's a small little town with now a whole lot in it. Sierra it's self was based in Oakhurst, which is 7 miles down the road from Coarsegold. Their old building is now a medical center. Got to do a drug test in there when I got hired on for another local company. Another of their buildings is now owned by the local phone company, SierraTel, and the 'shed' that was Sierra online has long since been demolished. The PO box they had in Coarsegold had to have been due to Oakhurst not having a post office yet? The post office there is pretty new and the Coarsegold post office I think dates back to the 40's. Since we're on highway side mailboxes and USPS won't deliver packages bigger than the mailbox to us, I have to go into that post office pretty often. Makes me wonder if PO box 486 is available. Wonder if it still gets mail for Sierra?
I used to play a lot of Sierra games as a kid. Then I moved to Coarsegold by chance only to find out shortly after that it was the home of Sierra. After I found out, I made it a point to spot anything Sierra related when I'm in Oakhurst. Their main office is pretty obvious being just off Highway 41. I think it's in a cut scene for one of the games, can't remember which one.

I it was a DOS CD rom game where you had to find 3 crystals to win the game. You had to build your settlement from scratch. You would set the amount of tax to be applied to your citizens. You would research everything in there game with your scientists from medicine to weapons. The intro was a very dated CGI movie telling you about how the crystals got separated and you need to beat the other kingdoms in finding them. Don't know if you'll be able to help but i figured it wouldn't hurt to try.

I drive by the old Sierra headquarters (the one at the end of Space Quest III) every day on my way to work and on my way home. It's mostly just used for medical offices now. *sigh*.. I wish I could've been there in the glory days.

I remember having this game... I found it a bit obtuse when I was younger, but still pretty memorable!

The most ironic thing about CoDB copy-protection system is that using a hint count will allow you to bypass one check (and geniuses at Sierra made sure that you will have three you need for first code pad). Even better, using a coin displays the code, rather then simply skipping one check. Since codes and matching codewords are hard coded into the game (otherwise you couldn't use printed manual as decypher tool), it's possible to simply run first and second codepad trough enough restarts to reverse engineer the entire code grid. Something I did in the late 90s.

I loved the Dr. Brain games, they were my favorite edutainment offerings! Island of Dr Brain was my favorite though, it was great. I blame them for my love of puns as an adult, too.

That Darkwing Duck game was only two months old at the time of purchase which explains the $50 price tag.

I remember being freaked out by that blue eye on the first screen when I was a kid. And the first hallway music.
