  • Swim jigs made easy! Matt gives quick tricks that you can use to take your swim jig fishing for bass to the next level! If you're a spinnerbait or chatterbait guy, the swim jig is the next step. When combined with the proper trailer the baits come to life with amazing movement and flash that bass can't resist. Don't get caught shaking your swim jig this Summer, learn the proper technique and catch more bass!
In recent years, most swim jig fishermen have begun to use a keitech as their trailer. While this can be effective (and we often do it) its not the ideal swimbait trailer for a swim jig. Switching over to baits like the Rage Swimmer or D Walker will complete change the way the bait moves. A properly balanced swim jig with the right trailer will have head bob/roll, body rock, and skirt movement/flash without you imparting any outside action to the bait.
Summer time is the perfect time to learn the swim jig. This time of year you can get a lot of bites on the baits but you can also catch GIANT fish! Again, the key is selecting the right trailer. Below is a breakdown of the jigs, jig trailers, and equipment we use for swim jig fishing.
    The Jigs...

I was out at Clear Lake, CA the last few days and I threw a strike king jig with a craw trailer that a gentleman at "Clearlake Outdoors Tackle shop" suggested, and I hooked more bass in 2 hours than in my entire life. Thanks for the great videos.

Very first time in 40 years decided to use a jig bc of you guys. Threw a 3/8oz strike king swimjig shad color with a 6thsense black bongo3.5 trailer from a rip rap bank into about 20 ft of water in the middle of the day last week … my very first cast ever using one…. 5lber on the dot choked it immmeditely. BTW this is in NY mind you so a 5 is alot harder to catch ! Instant new favorite bait. Thanks guys!

Hi, I have been fishing on and off my whole life.
This year I started again, now older I’m more patient and I have put in some time.
I have gotten really good at fines with a fluke, I catch a lot of fish. I mostly bank fish and fish canals of my paddleboard. I live in south Florida.
I wanted a technique so I could fish the bottom , with the fluke I can’t get to the bottom efficiently. I started experimenting with jigs two weeks ago, minor success. Dragging a jig on the bottom.
I saw your video this morning and sure enough I had a few swim gigs. I grabbed one white and green and used a 360gt storm search bait as a trailer.
I got 4 fish over 3 pounds and 4 fish that were around the 2 1/2 mark. No mini bass.
And like you said , throw and retrieve, no jerking just setting the hook every time I felt a bump.
Thanks for the video. Great info , I learned a lot from you.

About eight years ago I got back into bass fishing. Where I'm from it's spinnerbaits, crankbaits and plastics all day long. I would go to places with thick vegetation and get annoyed I couldn't fish because the slop was in my way. Then I found your channel and learned about swim jigs, punching and frogs. Completely changed my bass fishing experience. I fish cover 90% of people avoid and pull fish out. When I'm asked what lure I'm using and I say, "a swim jig," I get a puzzled look and they just move on. I cannot thank you enough for sharing your knowledge and experience. Because of the information you shared with me on your couch (it was an OLD video) I am a much better angler.

@Stoney Lonsome honestly the angles a boat makes is a huge difference. you can put it anywhere you want, while bank fishing you almost always only get a 45 degree angle to cast because of the tree line.

Stoney Lonsome there’s different aspects of every pond or lake, big fish are in the harder to reach spots that need a machete here in west TN. We learn to skip and flip loooong distances! And if we get hung up we are basically screwed...

Matt, not for the first time, Today I listened to you profess that you are able to skip a light jig farther than you can skip a heavier one. You aren't the only one who has said this, but I don't believe you- it contradicts what I have found.
So my challange is that you PROVE it. Please make the video that proves me wrong and you right.
If you give a heavier jig the same velocity as a light one, and send it at the same angle, momentum of the heavier jig carries it farther. No question, some jigs have more resistance to gliding across the water's surface than others. Some head shapes don't promote skipping, either. But ANY two similar jigs- the weight being the notable difference- will prove me correct.
    Go 'head. Make my day.

I shake the rod tip to keep the bait from sinking more than to give it a secondary action. I’ve made one cast in a spot with no shake, another cast with a strategic pop and shake of the rod tip last cover and get bit. The shaking and popping of the rod tip is to slow the bait down and keep it from sinking, to keep it in the strike range longer, and trigger that reaction strike with the skirt flairs on the pop. I’ve read and watched a lot of bill lowens stuff on swim jigs. He doesn’t use swim bait trailers though & I think that’s a mistake, it’s my primary trailer.

I really like the confidence it takes to throw a swim jig every time I throw it it looks amazing in the water but after not getting bit after about 30 minutes I always pick up something else

I live in Florida and I literally chunk these Dirty jigs with a trailer in the thick grass and thick lilly pads and it just goes right through it all. I get some nasty top water explosions and the hooks on the bad boys are no joke. Bad@$$ jig. Bought so many of them. Love flipping the 3/4 oz.

You can trim the skirt short on a bluegill pattern, then cinch the skirt down tight with wire or braid. This will cause it to poof open fast, into a big round profile, every time it stops on the bottom or bumps an object. The chartreuse tail also helps suggest a bluegill more convincingly, without the profile/hook issues of a replica SwimBait.
I'm not into bed fishing but post pawn if you run into those big June monsters looking for some bluegill beatdown, you're ready with an ideal hook and ratio to close the deal.
I've always got a bunch of Ca. swim jigs in my box.
