There was this one jewelry game I played when I was younger, and when you finished designing the pieces you could buy them online. I feel like it’s kind of like that except with sewing (and it’s free) and I’m absolutely living for it
a useful feature would be to caclulate difficulty scores based on the the complexity of the design. That would be very useful for beginners to avoid ending up with a very frustrating project
ooooh yes absolutely, good idea! I was designing a jumpsuit from woven fabric and a tight fit and it gave me no option for a zipper and I was like, yes okay this would be a headache if you didn't realise it NEEDS a zipper for it to fit, so I'll need to add that to the seam allowance of the back after it's printed. A beginner might not know this though, or know where extra seam allowance needs to go!
This looks like a cool concept. It could be really good for size and body type inclusivity. So often patterns are just sized up and don’t fit right on plus sized peeps. I’d love if this could allow people to customise patterns easily to fit their individual body. I’d wanna use it to get patterns that work for me as a wheelchair user. Very cool.
I increased the back rise on the shorts I made (shown at the end there) for making it wheelchair friendly! It's making me so excited, there's a LOT you can adjust after you have the basic design in that "ease" section!
Yeah if this was more beginner friendly I would be able to make so many things as a I can rarely find clothes that fit my proportions as a plus size girl with a very small bust, since most brands believe if you are plus size you must have giant breasts too...... plus I could make a jumpsuit that fits my weird super long torso, but tiny legs and arms. I want this when it has better instructions
This makes me so excited because I can never find shirts and dresses that fit me! I'm not plus size, my torso just have very different proportions to what regular patterns are made for. I've tried adapting patterns but it's a headache. My measurements are spread across several different sizes and the length between them is wrong too. It's a mess trying to figure out how to fix that into something workable so I kind of gave up and wear loose or too big for me tops only.
I’m super intrigued by this website, let’s hope they develop it further because this could become an amazing resource for sewers! I also liked the editing of the video, it was very clean and crisp.

I've used printed patterns from a few different places, and I've been taping them this whole time. Definitely picking up a gluestick for future projects!
Omg same here and I don't even have that tape holder thing so my tape would get stuck to the table or the paper etc. Definitely using glue stick and folding those sides under too. Thank you

I’ve been using tailornova for a few years now and have run into the knit facing issue as well, I think they have some kinks to iron out with that. I’ve also found the neckline way too wide, but I also chose boatneck and the other wider necklines looked too small. I have found it really great for getting a good fit, and have used it as a bodice block builder to make my own designs. The instructions are very broken and I just ignore them. The 3D fit model has been broken in the past but they might have found more funding to start fixing it cos it looks better in your video. I think also good to note that they have not been super fast to respond to issues I’ve had and written feedback I’ve given, so for beginners that need help it might not be ready for that yet. I think the team is very small and it’s a labour of love so I’m willing to give them a chance and keep supporting them because I love making my own patterns that fit me rather than struggling over adjusting bought patterns.
Yes, we are still a small team and there is much still to improve on. But yes we are getting more funding and able to build out the software more! Full steam ahead!

This may sound a bit silly, but I relly appreciate you showing how you put the PDF pattern together once you printed it out. I never understood how someone could actually use a PDF pattern, because how would you be able to print on big enough paper?! But now feel a bit silly because it's very obvious that you just print it out in A4 sections and glue them together 😅 Thanks Annika! Also, congratz on getting an editor! I really hope this can free up some of your time and make your video making process easier on you. Always love your videos :)
You can print on large enough papers, like A2. But at print shops, not at home. 😉 i think it's only good for free patterns since you have to pay for printing.
I really don't think having a sitting option is necessarily beneficial to anyone? Need the model to be stood up straight in order for you to see the garment and fit in its entirety- which is basically the point of the simulation. Also, the site is made for custom sizes. If you have a masculine or androgynous shape, you don't need to select an option for it if you put in your own measurements.

@@dumbdumb8526 I think the point is that if you're sitting all the time, you want a different type of fit than someone who stands. Pants ride down in back and up at the cuff when sitting, and a full-time wheelchair user would probably want an adjustment there.

Ahhhhh thank you! I had been taking them off for filming for a long time as i wasnt used to how they looked on me, but I've recently decided to leave them on (it also makes filming easier). This means a lot! ^_^ I'm still a bit shy about wearing them haha

I’ve used tailornova! i like that they have packages where you can buy a few patterns at a time instead of the monthly membership. The company that makes it is called Bootstrap Patterns and they also have already designed patterns you can buy that match your measurements (i made a dress form my exact size with one of their custom patterns!!).
I was a little afraid to do the custom dress from from bootstrap. How has it worked for you? Did you have someone to help you get your measurements, and did you do the adjustments, or go with a standard size?

@@merindymorgenson3184 I made the custom dress form about 2 weeks ago and it was so easy. Instructions were good and the whole thing went together like a dream. One thing I would say is to interface your fabric before you cut it as interfacing has a terrible habit of shrinking with the heat of the iron and pulling things out of shape.
I’m a beginner and I’m learning to sew mostly through You Tube and then my mother’s help when I am able to get to her house. (Like you, I have disability issues and I can’t travel even one hour easily). BUT! I LOVE this program! I’d like to watch a few You Tuber’s use it for a while and maybe I’ll be ready to use it within a year. This was one of the best sewing videos I’ve seen in a while!
I guess a subscription would be great to see the 3D modeling, but there's no way I could justify a monthly/ annual subscription because I'd never use it enough to get my money's worth! Glad to see you can buy your final pattern by itself though! And that price is comparable to prices I've seen store bought patterns go for, AND you don't have to leave the house, AND you know it'll fit without having to make hundreds of adjustments on the "one size fits most" model! I’m part of the 5% that didn’t think about folding margins! I’ve never downloaded a pattern before, so I never thought about. But I just today bought a pattern that I need to download and print, so now I know how to assemble it! Also, ive heard of this site but never used it. I’m so glad you tried it out! Now I want to try it!
I feel like this software is more suited for fitted clothes and non-stretchy fabrics at this time. Which I think is fantastic because those patterns are the most difficult (for me at least) to make. Personally, I’m super excited to see how they update and improve their software :)
I HAVE BEEN WANTING THIS TO BE A THING FOR YEARS!! Ahh and someone else has done it for me so I can just be a lazy slump! This program reminds me of something my dad would do. He used to program tools for small businesses and just jive them away for free (because he’s the best) but it’s really cool that there are other programmers out there like this!
When using a facing on knits or wovens it typically tells you to interface it first, i recommend doing this especially for knits, makes a huge difference
You could also sew some clear elastic along the holes instead of interfacing, as I've learned from unpicking thrifted clothes to reuse the material. Plus, I just watched Wendy's latest video where she did the same thing. 😁 But, would elastic be as sturdy as interfacing?
Knits can be faced.. stay stitch the neck of the blouse and the neck of the facing. This will prevent them from stretching during sewing. Also using a walking foot will help prevent the stretching.
This site is such a blessing, I'll recommend it (and your video) to my sewing friends! Thanks for trying it out for us! I learned tailoring the hard way (blogs and videos by amateurs and professionals) and it took me forever to get it right. Would've totally printed out a pattern from the site, even if I'd just used it as an example for my own drafts. Flat patterns can look super weird, and without an example from someone with the same body type, it's really hard to know whether it'll work out in the end or not. (Random side note: Five people on IG told me that my trousers pattern is waaaay off and wrong. It fits me perfectly though and looks great. Different body shapes y'all.)
I just did a quick glance over the comments and didn't see this, I think the facing would have worked a LOT better with some interfacing! It makes it more crisp and prevents the neckhole from stretching. I have seen knits with facing before but you definitely have to finesse it a bit more than woven materials.
I came across this website super recently and i was extremely curious, this review is a god send! I’ve been sewing up a storm this quarantine and heres what i’ve learned about these large finicky facings: I usually now sew them after the shoulder seams but before the sideseams so I can maneuver the whole garnment flat and not have to deal with that while I sew the facing on and understitch!
Annika, what a discovery!!! First of all, I would like to say that the site doesn't just offer the membership option but package deals as well! You can get 5 patterns gor $15 or 30 patterns for $45. That is way more reasonable for someone who sews a bit but not a whole lot (like me!). Second of all, I already made my firts garment from the free patterns, and I LOVE IT! I don't have social medias (except for Tumblr) so I don't really know how to show you. Its a cropped black wool top, with bust and waist darts, a high neck and long pleated sleeves. It took me a little more than a day of full time work to complete it. It's an absolute dream! Thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!!!

this sounds like such a great idea!!! i have a bust size much larger than my waist and i always have to make the large size in patterns and do a bunch of tailoring- i love that this website specifies your measurements!!
I’m not sure if anyone else has said this (at least in my somewhat brief scroll i didnt see any) but if you’re struggling with facings it can be super helpful to do it before sewing up the side seams. This way you can lay the neckline flat and pin it and sew it waaaay easier! :D i learned this trick from Angela Clayton here on youtube and it has helped me sooo much!
I've played around with tailornova before and I'm excited to see someone trying the patterns out! I actually use their patterns as bases for digital tailoring (in a program called Marvelous Designer/CLO 3D) but I always adjust the fit haha... and it's, ya know, digital.
this is so cool! i think it could also be helpful if the website had 'tips' that would pop up based off certain options being paired together. like you'd mentioned in a comment, you picked a tight fit with a woven fabric and it didnt tell you to add a zipper or the seam allowance for it--it would be cool if the site picked up on when you combine certain options and pops a tutorial/tip to help those who may not know that that's something youd need to consider!

Wow that so great! Thank you for reviewing the software. And I think it's very fair to excuse some of the missing features. There is so much pressure on software engineers and that a working first draft is usable for us and for free!! It's a great tool, I singend up for the free membership to play around, but will buy the 5 download package soon to get access to the 3D model. And also fair warning, it's not for beginners! It's a super cool and fast first draft of you're experienced, but you still have to think it through before starting. Like adding more pockets or zippers or loops for buttons etc. But for having a quick and beautiful draft and hafe them give you the exact meterage?! Fantastic!
I have a little bit of knowledge of how technical and time intensive pattern creating can be, so this is pretty incredible. When I saw your post on Instagram I was like "bruuuuh 😮" I think when I have more experience sewing I will definitely be buying a membership for fashionova. I just bought my first beginner sewing machine (a Singer on a 50% discount!) and I'm all good like fixing some curtains or a rip in some stitching or something, but I'd love it if you maybe had like a -beginners- playlist. I enjoy the way you "teach" on here so much. It's really understandable and easy to understand. I think for a knit fabric you could use a knit fusing to stabilise it, or do an internal bind instead. The latter would require some top-Stitch, but would work well on certain fabrics. Thanks for the tutorial. I’m just getting back into sewing for fun (after avoiding it for 12 years post-University and working as a designer). The fold and tape/glue method is exactly what I used to do when taping together print outs of textile artworks to check scale. I can see everyone appreciates you showing this step!
I've used this for three cosplays so far and I can confirm that it is FANTASTIC for it. I've still had to alter them because video game outfits are stupid but they make life so so soooo much easier
Great tutorial! I signed up for Tailornova over a year ago but never actually downloaded the patterns I created. It has been on testing for so long and honestly, even though it’s such a godd idea I thought it would go bust quickly... Good to see they still exist but it doesn’t look like the software changed to much in a year!

Oh I’ve used tailornova! Super exciting to see Annika use it too. I really like it, but it’s not the only thing of it’s kind. Free sewing, bootstrap fashion, pattern lab, there’s all sorts of alternatives. Of course CAD and things as well for people that are more adept at drafting themselves. I like tailornova a lot, but these sorts of pattern services are better for more intermediate to advanced sewists that can whip up a pattern on their own without instructions, like mentioned in the video they add unnesicsry facings and things, so you need to have a good intuition for what to do.
you can always put in a strand of somthing non stretchy in your neckline to make it stay in place overtime,. it works especially good when you put it in bitween the facing and restof the garment
What a couple that Handnika and Lucimano! (...I'll show myself out) I've been super curious about services like tailornova and I must admit I was sceptical, but all in all it seems rather rad! The neck facing seemed redundant, though, either binding or a rolled hem would be easier, better options? Maybe they wanted to give you the option like for the armscye facing for another project, but if you switch to woven fabrics the sizing might be different? 🤔 Confusing.
I wonder if one of the bugs in the software is from the order that you make decisions? If you choose the fabric type first maybe that would narrow the styling options to those that are more fabric appropriate. Also, to stop the neckline from stretching out, you can sew twill tape or something similarly non-stretchy across the inside seam of the neck across the back (from shoulder to shoulder). I'm not much of a sewist, but that's how I stop my handknit hoodies from stretching out. 😄
Great idea. They should definitely implement that. Patterns for knits and wovens are fundamentally different (obviously), it makes sense, to put them into two categories and make the customer choose between those as first step in the process 👍
im pleasantly surprised by how thorough and comprehensive this site is! i am a beginner and if theres one thing that discourages me the most from making my own clothes it's whether or not i feel like i can get what i want with a pattern design. this would take a huge scary step out of all that for my depressive ass lol
Really appreciate how detailed this review is! Lots of good and plenty of problems, and you're realistic about both. I would definitely consider checking this program out when I'm further along in my sewing journey, but I know not to try right now as a newbie.
Do they have historical costume type patterns? I've been using a mishmash of tudor and other designs from books for a Witch Hunter costume pattern, and damn is it hard to adapt those to a functional cosplay type design and then combine the main part of the body with different sleeves and collars from other costumes!
No, it's modern silhouettes (though I have been using it to get "close" to a lot of 1940s designs and then modifying after printed, but idk about tudor!! If you check it out for that... let us know :P)
I’m sure there would be a way to hack the longer skirts or use some of those sleeves to you advantage (those double ruffle sleeves remind me of 18th century). You’ll need to make plenty of adjustments for sure and im pretty convinced your bodice would need a lot of adjustments for boning and all that stuff, and it obviously wont be historically accurate in the construction if you go that route. But who knows maybe it can help you in the initial stages to get pattern pieces that fit and get altered into what you want. I’d definitely look into it and play around since you do get a couple free designs on it anyway
Wha do people hate flat pattermaking so much? Lol. But seriously though, if you already have the main part of the pattern, drawing matching sleeves and especially collars is not that hard. Give it a try, for the collar part especially. It's not witchcraft, I promise 😉

I've been using Tailornova for a little while now and recommend using the EASE feature. It allows you to refine the fit to your specific body. Start by entering all measurements to do a custom fit as they describe in their instructional videos, then develop the style design that you want to use. Make sure the 3D model is displaying. Open up the EASE menu, pick the fabric type and general fit you want (very fitted, fitted, semi-fitted) and notice how that changes the fit and drape on the 3D model. Decide if you like the design you have chosen or if it is not flattering to your body shape, then change it. If you have some knowledge of how to fit garments and alter patterns (or read a good book on the subject), then you can start playing with the individual ease measurements to see how those tiny changes affect the 3D model. When the model looks right (the fit is symmetrical with no pulling, gaping or bunching) then proceed on to printing the pattern. I'm impressed with how accurate the resulting pattern is. If, on the other hand, commercial pattern sizes work well for you and don't need alterations, Tailornova allows you to set the size to one of those, and you can skip the individual ease measurements step.
I have used tailor nova for my fiancé (very tall/1,94m and thin) and for myself (very small/1,50m and chubby/very curvy) Although the patterns are very good I think when sewing for those extremes you do need knowledge on how to alter garments wich was no problem for me since I am a studied seamstress and fashion designer but that could be difficult for a beginner. I really hope they will be coming up with some jackets soon and more collar options that would be great for people who can't construct them themselves but want to sew something more ambitious. (yes my hubby an I make a rather funny looking couple tbh)

I feel like having the extra pattern piece for the armhole facing is actually a great thing if you decide you don't want sleeves after all or if you make a second top but without the sleeves or sheer fabric for the sleeves. Idk just gives you some more options 😁

I've been looking for a digital program that allows me to create a design, plug in body measurements, then print out a flat pattern. I was afraid I might have to develop such a program. As someone who was on the fence about trying it out i am now enthusiastically pulling out my antique printer and giving this a go! Hopefully my results are as true as yours! The 3d model of my measurements looks promising!!!!

You input your measurements (including tummy pooch!) and for only $24 they give you a pdf pattern and instructions for a dress form to your measurements! I just finished mine a couple weeks ago and it’s amazing! It’s my size and wasn’t too difficult to sew up even for a beginner. I absolutely love it! I’ve been thinking about trying Taylornova for a while now too but haven’t really gotten around to it - I’m definitely gonna try it now:) thank you Annika!

This looks like a cool concept. It could be really good for size and body type inclusivity. So often patterns are just sized up and don’t fit right on plus sized peeps. I’d love if this could allow people to customise patterns easily to fit their individual body. I’d wanna use it to get patterns that work for me as a wheelchair user. Very cool.
I increased the back rise on the shorts I made (shown at the end there) for making it wheelchair friendly! It's making me so excited, there's a LOT you can adjust after you have the basic design in that "ease" section!

Yeah if this was more beginner friendly I would be able to make so many things as a I can rarely find clothes that fit my proportions as a plus size girl with a very small bust, since most brands believe if you are plus size you must have giant breasts too...... plus I could make a jumpsuit that fits my weird super long torso, but tiny legs and arms. I want this when it has better instructions
This makes me so excited because I can never find shirts and dresses that fit me! I'm not plus size, my torso just have very different proportions to what regular patterns are made for. I've tried adapting patterns but it's a headache. My measurements are spread across several different sizes and the length between them is wrong too. It's a mess trying to figure out how to fix that into something workable so I kind of gave up and wear loose or too big for me tops only.
I’m super intrigued by this website, let’s hope they develop it further because this could become an amazing resource for sewers! I also liked the editing of the video, it was very clean and crisp.

I’ve been using tailornova for a few years now and have run into the knit facing issue as well, I think they have some kinks to iron out with that. I’ve also found the neckline way too wide, but I also chose boatneck and the other wider necklines looked too small. I have found it really great for getting a good fit, and have used it as a bodice block builder to make my own designs. The instructions are very broken and I just ignore them. The 3D fit model has been broken in the past but they might have found more funding to start fixing it cos it looks better in your video. I think also good to note that they have not been super fast to respond to issues I’ve had and written feedback I’ve given, so for beginners that need help it might not be ready for that yet. I think the team is very small and it’s a labour of love so I’m willing to give them a chance and keep supporting them because I love making my own patterns that fit me rather than struggling over adjusting bought patterns.
Yes, we are still a small team and there is much still to improve on. But yes we are getting more funding and able to build out the software more! Full steam ahead!

This may sound a bit silly, but I relly appreciate you showing how you put the PDF pattern together once you printed it out. I never understood how someone could actually use a PDF pattern, because how would you be able to print on big enough paper?! But now feel a bit silly because it's very obvious that you just print it out in A4 sections and glue them together 😅 Thanks Annika!

Make sure you get the A4 or letter size (used in the US) based on what printer you have. They are similar sizer, but not the same.
You can print on large enough papers, like A2. But at print shops, not at home. 😉 i think it's only good for free patterns since you have to pay for printing.

Since you enter your own measurements, isn’t that how the model includes all body types that exist?
I really don't think having a sitting option is necessarily beneficial to anyone? Need the model to be stood up straight in order for you to see the garment and fit in its entirety- which is basically the point of the simulation. Also, the site is made for custom sizes. If you have a masculine or androgynous shape, you don't need to select an option for it if you put in your own measurements.

@@dumbdumb8526 I think the point is that if you're sitting all the time, you want a different type of fit than someone who stands. Pants ride down in back and up at the cuff when sitting, and a full-time wheelchair user would probably want an adjustment there.

Ahhhhh thank you! I had been taking them off for filming for a long time as i wasnt used to how they looked on me, but I've recently decided to leave them on (it also makes filming easier). This means a lot! ^_^ I'm still a bit shy about wearing them haha

I’ve used tailornova! i like that they have packages where you can buy a few patterns at a time instead of the monthly membership. The company that makes it is called Bootstrap Patterns and they also have already designed patterns you can buy that match your measurements (i made a dress form my exact size with one of their custom patterns!!).

@@merindymorgenson3184 I made the custom dress form about 2 weeks ago and it was so easy. Instructions were good and the whole thing went together like a dream. One thing I would say is to interface your fabric before you cut it as interfacing has a terrible habit of shrinking with the heat of the iron and pulling things out of shape.

I’m a beginner and I’m learning to sew mostly through You Tube and then my mother’s help when I am able to get to her house. (Like you, I have disability issues and I can’t travel even one hour easily). BUT! I LOVE this program! I’d like to watch a few You Tuber’s use it for a while and maybe I’ll be ready to use it within a year. This was one of the best sewing videos I’ve seen in a while!

I guess a subscription would be great to see the 3D modeling, but there's no way I could justify a monthly/ annual subscription because I'd never use it enough to get my money's worth! Glad to see you can buy your final pattern by itself though! And that price is comparable to prices I've seen store bought patterns go for, AND you don't have to leave the house, AND you know it'll fit without having to make hundreds of adjustments on the "one size fits most" model! I’m part of the 5% that didn’t think about folding margins! I’ve never downloaded a pattern before, so I never thought about. But I just today bought a pattern that I need to download and print, so now I know how to assemble it!

I feel like this software is more suited for fitted clothes and non-stretchy fabrics at this time. Which I think is fantastic because those patterns are the most difficult (for me at least) to make. Personally, I’m super excited to see how they update and improve their software :)

This program reminds me of something my dad would do. He used to program tools for small businesses and just jive them away for free (because he’s the best) but it’s really cool that there are other programmers out there like this!
When using a facing on knits or wovens it typically tells you to interface it first, i recommend doing this especially for knits, makes a huge difference

From my experience any light weight interfacing should do the trick
You could also sew some clear elastic along the holes instead of interfacing, as I've learned from unpicking thrifted clothes to reuse the material. Plus, I just watched Wendy's latest video where she did the same thing. 😁 But, would elastic be as sturdy as interfacing?

Knits can be faced.. stay stitch the neck of the blouse and the neck of the facing. This will prevent them from stretching during sewing. Also using a walking foot will help prevent the stretching.

This site is such a blessing, I'll recommend it (and your video) to my sewing friends! Thanks for trying it out for us! I learned tailoring the hard way (blogs and videos by amateurs and professionals) and it took me forever to get it right. Would've totally printed out a pattern from the site, even if I'd just used it as an example for my own drafts. Flat patterns can look super weird, and without an example from someone with the same body type, it's really hard to know whether it'll work out in the end or not. (Random side note: Five people on IG told me that my trousers pattern is waaaay off and wrong. It fits me perfectly though and looks great. Different body shapes y'all.)
next time you should use that website and then randomly pick every thing (sleeves, neckline etc) and then create whatever you get

I just did a quick glance over the comments and didn't see this, I think the facing would have worked a LOT better with some interfacing! It makes it more crisp and prevents the neckhole from stretching. I have seen knits with facing before but you definitely have to finesse it a bit more than woven materials.
I came across this website super recently and i was extremely curious, this review is a god send! I’ve been sewing up a storm this quarantine and heres what i’ve learned about these large finicky facings: I usually now sew them after the shoulder seams but before the sideseams so I can maneuver the whole garnment flat and not have to deal with that while I sew the facing on and understitch!

First of all, I would like to say that the site doesn't just offer the membership option but package deals as well! You can get 5 patterns gor $15 or 30 patterns for $45. That is way more reasonable for someone who sews a bit but not a whole lot (like me!).
Second of all, I already made my firts garment from the free patterns, and I LOVE IT! I don't have social medias (except for Tumblr) so I don't really know how to show you. Its a cropped black wool top, with bust and waist darts, a high neck and long pleated sleeves. It took me a little more than a day of full time work to complete it. It's an absolute dream!

this sounds like such a great idea!!! i have a bust size much larger than my waist and i always have to make the large size in patterns and do a bunch of tailoring- i love that this website specifies your measurements!!
I’m not sure if anyone else has said this (at least in my somewhat brief scroll i didnt see any) but if you’re struggling with facings it can be super helpful to do it before sewing up the side seams. This way you can lay the neckline flat and pin it and sew it waaaay easier! :D i learned this trick from Angela Clayton here on youtube and it has helped me sooo much!

I've played around with tailornova before and I'm excited to see someone trying the patterns out! I actually use their patterns as bases for digital tailoring (in a program called Marvelous Designer/CLO 3D) but I always adjust the fit haha... and it's, ya know, digital.

this is so cool! i think it could also be helpful if the website had 'tips' that would pop up based off certain options being paired together. like you'd mentioned in a comment, you picked a tight fit with a woven fabric and it didnt tell you to add a zipper or the seam allowance for it--it would be cool if the site picked up on when you combine certain options and pops a tutorial/tip to help those who may not know that that's something youd need to consider!

Wow that so great! Thank you for reviewing the software. And I think it's very fair to excuse some of the missing features. There is so much pressure on software engineers and that a working first draft is usable for us and for free!! It's a great tool, I singend up for the free membership to play around, but will buy the 5 download package soon to get access to the 3D model. And also fair warning, it's not for beginners! It's a super cool and fast first draft of you're experienced, but you still have to think it through before starting. Like adding more pockets or zippers or loops for buttons etc. But for having a quick and beautiful draft and hafe them give you the exact meterage?! Fantastic!

I just bought my first beginner sewing machine (a Singer on a 50% discount!) and I'm all good like fixing some curtains or a rip in some stitching or something, but I'd love it if you maybe had like a -beginners- playlist. I think for a knit fabric you could use a knit fusing to stabilise it, or do an internal bind instead. The latter would require some top-Stitch, but would work well on certain fabrics.

The fold and tape/glue method is exactly what I used to do when taping together print outs of textile artworks to check scale.

I've used this for three cosplays so far and I can confirm that it is FANTASTIC for it. I've still had to alter them because video game outfits are stupid but they make life so so soooo much easier

It has been on testing for so long and honestly, even though it’s such a godd idea I thought it would go bust quickly... Oh I’ve used tailornova! Super exciting to see Annika use it too. I really like it, but it’s not the only thing of it’s kind. Free sewing, bootstrap fashion, pattern lab, there’s all sorts of alternatives. Of course CAD and things as well for people that are more adept at drafting themselves. I like tailornova a lot, but these sorts of pattern services are better for more intermediate to advanced sewists that can whip up a pattern on their own without instructions, like mentioned in the video they add unnesicsry facings and things, so you need to have a good intuition for what to do.
you can always put in a strand of somthing non stretchy in your neckline to make it stay in place overtime,. it works especially good when you put it in bitween the facing and restof the garment

I've been super curious about services like tailornova and I must admit I was sceptical, but all in all it seems rather rad! The neck facing seemed redundant, though, either binding or a rolled hem would be easier, better options? Maybe they wanted to give you the option like for the armscye facing for another project, but if you switch to woven fabrics the sizing might be different? 🤔 Confusing.

I wonder if one of the bugs in the software is from the order that you make decisions? If you choose the fabric type first maybe that would narrow the styling options to those that are more fabric appropriate.
Also, to stop the neckline from stretching out, you can sew twill tape or something similarly non-stretchy across the inside seam of the neck across the back (from shoulder to shoulder). I'm not much of a sewist, but that's how I stop my handknit hoodies from stretching out. 😄
Great idea. They should definitely implement that. Patterns for knits and wovens are fundamentally different (obviously), it makes sense, to put them into two categories and make the customer choose between those as first step in the process 👍

im pleasantly surprised by how thorough and comprehensive this site is! i am a beginner and if theres one thing that discourages me the most from making my own clothes it's whether or not i feel like i can get what i want with a pattern design. this would take a huge scary step out of all that for my depressive ass lol

Do they have historical costume type patterns? I've been using a mishmash of tudor and other designs from books for a Witch Hunter costume pattern,
and damn is it hard to adapt those to a functional cosplay type design and then combine the main part of the body with different sleeves and collars from other costumes!
No, it's modern silhouettes (though I have been using it to get "close" to a lot of 1940s designs and then modifying after printed, but idk about tudor!! If you check it out for that... let us know :P)
I’m sure there would be a way to hack the longer skirts or use some of those sleeves to you advantage (those double ruffle sleeves remind me of 18th century). You’ll need to make plenty of adjustments for sure and im pretty convinced your bodice would need a lot of adjustments for boning and all that stuff, and it obviously wont be historically accurate in the construction if you go that route. But who knows maybe it can help you in the initial stages to get pattern pieces that fit and get altered into what you want. I’d definitely look into it and play around since you do get a couple free designs on it anyway

I've been using Tailornova for a little while now and recommend using the EASE feature. It allows you to refine the fit to your specific body. Start by entering all measurements to do a custom fit as they describe in their instructional videos, then develop the style design that you want to use. Make sure the 3D model is displaying. Open up the EASE menu, pick the fabric type and general fit you want (very fitted, fitted, semi-fitted) and notice how that changes the fit and drape on the 3D model. Decide if you like the design you have chosen or if it is not flattering to your body shape, then change it. If you have some knowledge of how to fit garments and alter patterns (or read a good book on the subject), then you can start playing with the individual ease measurements to see how those tiny changes affect the 3D model. When the model looks right (the fit is symmetrical with no pulling, gaping or bunching) then proceed on to printing the pattern. I'm impressed with how accurate the resulting pattern is.
If, on the other hand, commercial pattern sizes work well for you and don't need alterations, Tailornova allows you to set the size to one of those, and you can skip the individual ease measurements step.

I have used tailor nova for my fiancé (very tall/1,94m and thin) and for myself (very small/1,50m and chubby/very curvy)
Although the patterns are very good I think when sewing for those extremes you do need knowledge on how to alter garments wich was no problem for me since I am a studied seamstress and fashion designer but that could be difficult for a beginner.
I really hope they will be coming up with some jackets soon and more collar options that would be great for people who can't construct them themselves but want to sew something more ambitious.
(yes my hubby an I make a rather funny looking couple tbh)

I feel like having the extra pattern piece for the armhole facing is actually a great thing if you decide you don't want sleeves after all or if you make a second top but without the sleeves or sheer fabric for the sleeves. Idk just gives you some more options 😁

I've been looking for a digital program that allows me to create a design, plug in body measurements, then print out a flat pattern. I was afraid I might have to develop such a program. I could see this being useful for me. I do commission work, and although I'm a decent pattern drafter, this could save a lot of time for me doing the initial fitting of a new client!!

I honestly can't decide my prefered method for sewing sleeves, but lately I'm finding it easier to close the sides first. It's been less frustrating to figure out the ease-in part, I guess. Love your chanel!

If you use interfacing on the facing, it would be easier to work with and keep the neck from stretching. I do use interfacing on knits on some styles

For a knit facing it needs to be interfaced and you can add a narrow ribbon to the seam allowance to control any future sagging.
I believe this is the same company behind Bootstrap diy dress forms! You input your measurements (including tummy pooch!) and for only $24 they give you a pdf pattern and instructions for a dress form to your measurements! I just finished mine a couple weeks ago and it’s amazing! It’s my size and wasn’t too difficult to sew up even for a beginner. I absolutely love it! I’ve been thinking about trying Taylornova for a while now too but haven’t really gotten around to it - I’m definitely gonna try it now:) thank you Annika!
