    I think hunting deer, elk, etc is a great way to build skills such as maneuvering or setting up in positions to either stay hidden or ambush. It also requires an emphasis on finding sign and being mindful of leaving sign along with practicing slls. I like hiking/rucking but it’s easy to get in that trailblazing mindset of getting from point A to B and you don’t pay attention to how noticeable you are or if you’re approaching other people or things you aren’t aware of. I’ve had hikers walk within 25 yards of me elk hunting on a trail while I was just off the path in camo with my bow in hand and pack on just because they were solely focused on the trail right in front of their face and not paying attention to their surroundings. Sometimes it’s good to remember don’t go faster than your ability to process your surroundings to an acceptable level.

      Tracking (and hiding my tracks) is something I try to stay aware of when hiking. Reading accounts from the Rhodesian Bush War, some of the stories w/ tracking are simply insane. Sometimes they would even track a group for days before catching up/getting to a good spot to attack, all while very carefully hiding their own tracks since the guerillas tended to be pretty good trackers too

    • @Beacon7x
      @Beacon7x Рік тому +20

      @@Gods_Favorite_Subcontractor right. And sometimes leaving sign by design, can be advantageous too. Sometimes if we find an exceptional area to hunt, me and my hunting crew will make an effort to get up or arrive earlier than usual, all drive our vehicles separate and park at the trail head or area so that it looks like the area is already overcrowded and will deter others from parking and coming in on us. So appear to be a larger “force” than you actually are. Likewise if we pull into a parking area or trail head and there’s several 4wd trucks different state/county tags with hunting stickers all over the glass we will usually move along vs if we come to a trailhead and there’s several Subarus/sedans and minivans with hiking and vegan stickers all over the glass we will “assume” they’re going to be sticking on the trails and not hunting lol but paying attention and noticing a certain level of detail is the main thing no matter what the “mission” is even if that means slowing down occasionally and appreciating where you’re at.

    Having performed both defensive and offensive combat operations (to include raiding heavily defended taliban logistics stockpiles and killing ISIS infiltrators or "raiders" trying to crawl through our own wire in iraq) I can say, this guy hits most of the major points. @nonyabeeznuss304 Рік тому +51

      @@markhatfield5621 He hits all the basic points on how to conduct the recon patrols pretty well. The thing I will say is that I don't think people realize the logistics that go into conducting these kind of operations. It costs the US military something like $140,000 to get a regular average joe combat ready. The average soldier is running around in $20,000 worth of gear. It costs tens of thousands a week per head to have a US soldier engaged in combat operations.
      For example, he brings up night vision, those absolutely chow through batteries like you wouldn't believe. Also, combat operations are incredibly physically strenuous. You need to consume a ton more food, primarily rich in carbs, fats, and protein, ie, the kind of food that will be hard to get in a SHTF scenario. You also need a ton of drinking water. Probably atleast 3 to 4 liters a day. Maybe potable water won't be very accessible in SHTF. If you can't meet calorie requirements, patrolling is just going to be wearing yourself down and decreasing your combat ability, physical exhaustion and loss of combat/survival capability will drop rapidly.
      idk. Its a neat thought exercise to kind of learn tactical mindset (which, to give him credit, he freely admits) but the reality is if your survival strategy is to emulate GWOT style patrols, you are going to burn through your provisions and consumables like batteries real damned quick for a pretty questionable gain.

    I think roaming patrols are more dangerous than building a series of observation points that you can move to and from, like with a bicycle, and observe areas of significance. Parking something like an abandoned school bus on the edge of a road gives you a large shelter to observe from and keep things in that won’t look out of place.

    • @Gods_Favorite_Subcontractor
      @Gods_Favorite_Subcontractor Рік тому +39

      But you NEED roaming patrols at some point. Ideally you want to control (or at least be able to project force & patrols) miles away from your actual house, so you have multiple layers & fallbacks. A single OP at your driveway won't be enough (although static sentries are good)

In those scenarios it would even be wise to probably obstruct or demolish some of them in order to keep security needs down. Obviously a major threat could still find its way in but realistically a major threat is just gonna steamroll through one of the major routes your OPs would have eyes on. As Brass Facts said, losing a few guys to them may be no big deal.

    • @Gods_Favorite_Subcontractor

    • @ImperiumLibertas
      @ImperiumLibertas Рік тому +20

      Overt patrolling only seems like a good idea when you know you can win the fight i.e. air/indirect fire support.
      It makes much more sense for a small force to make observation points with QRF to stomp out any threat that pops up. This allows you to have a larger fighting force than distributing your forces over a wider area.
      Front line forces only job is to delay and call for support while the responding force is responsible for winning the fight and repelling the threat.
      In a civilian context this could be modified to have frontline forces not make contact at all and only act as recon and let a command unit coordinate an assault unit if applicable. They could assign a recon unit to shadow the threat if they're deemed not an immediate threat.
      The whole goal is to not fight unless you have to.
      This is all my armchair general take.
      Here is a similar but different tactic that is used to defeat a larger force. This is known as defeat in detail. The defensive counterpart is defense in detail or elastic defense.

I live in a heavily wooded rural area & have been doing 2-3 mile routes through the forest in kit with my trusty companion Remi (that’s her in my pfp.) I have multiple infil/exfil paths & wanted to bring up something you touched on; knowledge of your surrounding location. I know the woods on & (for about 2 miles) around my property extremely well. Deer trails, sink holes, old barbed wire fences that can barely be seen until you’re right on top of them; you need to know where all of that stuff is if you’re a forest dweller like myself. If I had to make a hasty exit I could disappear into the woods & be very difficult to find. My next step is supply caches in a few strategic locations.

    Excellent points made and questions raised that everyone concerned should be asking themselves as an individual and as a team. The reality of things is much more in depth and complex than just owning kit to flex with on Instagram. At the end of the day the most important question to any segment of preparedness should be "is the juice worth the squeeze".
    It has been my experience in life that its not always the person giving all the answers that's the smartest dude in the room, but rather the dude with the right questions. Preparedness is synergistic and we are only as strong as our weakest link. Knowlege without practical application is useless in the real world.
    We are not equal when it comes to health, financial capabilities, knowledge and skills. Its important to be honest with yourself about your strengths and weaknesses. Formulate plans that utilizes your strengths while constantly working on your weaknesses. At the end od the day the is what it is. God bless all of you right thinking citizens.

    One thing that is important and not often talked about is human terrain mapping. If you want to know the context and potential of threats, you can't just sit around in your homestead and hope for the best. Additionally, you can't gather all of the reconnaissance you need by sitting on a hill with a spotting scope because many threats are more latent and less obvious due to people's nature to not try and expose themselves. So you have to either conduct reconnaissance in force by attempting to draw a response from the populace (things like presence patrols through an area) or, more advisably, conduct covert reconnaissance actions that still account for the HUMINT portion of your mission. Therefore opening yourself up to new potential threats by appearing like a soft target. It's all a fuckin give or take. We could talk about this pretty extensively, my time in recon definitely helped mold my view of it. I'd love to discuss it with you personally in the future to help expand this topic and learn from one another's standpoints.

      You're talking as if you have a message or offer training that's reaching more people than this video, let alone the others on the channel. The reality of your channel says the opposite. Even if you run a business on training people, that's only refining the demographic that is created by people like this. By no definition except refining existing skills, are you doing anything more significant than this channel. Less information, less overall people educated, less man-hours of education, less effort (you don't trek several times to retrieve long-range camerawork while in the field), but STILL you say they have a ways to go.
      Yet you can't say how or why, so I stand by my initial accusation of that coming from a cope, wishing you had done more to create a generation who is interested in these things, and arrogantly speaking down on anyone who dares do anything that's proven more successful than you in every metric. If he's just starting and still has a ways to go, I fear what that means for yourself.

Any recce has to have a base of operations and people are needed to tend things there and provide security. Just to secure a modest household would seem to require 5-6 folks to allow for the chores to be done and people have to provide security while others rest/sleep. Perhaps another way to approach things is from a "fortified household/homestead" perspective. Keep up the good content.

    People need to start taking into account just how devastating the loss of even 1 person can be in a small or even a large group because of bad planning. How easy do people really think it is to replace a medic or a surgeon (especially), or someone who can make effective medicine from items in the field? How difficult will it be to replace someone who knows the ins and outs of hydroponic farming? Or a herbalist who knows what's edible, what isn't, how it should be prepared, etc. How often are you going to find someone who can setup and run computer networks from scratch by gathering up computers, servers, network devices, and so forth?
    Survival isn't all about fighting and approaching it as such is doomed to fail. There are people that have sets of skills that are borderline required for modern society to function and they need to be protected at all costs and the first step to that is proper recon and planning. Small children. How you gonna deal with you or your team's children? They can't contribute to RECCE missions (except maybe observation), they need to use up a lot of supplies without providing any reconstitution of said supplies , they don't move quickly, they can't respond to critical threats in emergencies (at least not like an adult).
    Very easy to consider scenarios when you have only fully grown, able-bodied team mates. Becomes significantly more difficult when you have dependents that need to constantly consume your resources. Food for thought.

Of course, those of us with kids will likely go down in the first wave of crisis anyway - for obvious reasons. Nonetheless, no matter how much we prep ourselves, or amongst or able-bodied peers, the children become the single biggest vulnerability to SHTF planning. I sometimes wonder if folks make the mistake of overlooking such a critical factor in their plan.

    • @PracticalReformation
      @PracticalReformation Рік тому +14

      Children are great at pulling weeds, picking beans, gathering dug up potatoes, cleaning canning jars, feeding the chickens and gathering their eggs. Kids can definitely participate but yes, they are definitely a vulnerability as well. This is why community is important. In the late 1700's in the american frontier there were (at times) persistent dangers of raid by natives, even with that threat life had to go on but precautions were taking, homesteads would double or triple up to make attack by raiding parties more difficult, people carried a long gun at ALL times when outside the walls of their homes, they didnt go into the fields alone cause thats how people got "dissapeared". In addition to that there were scouts, hunters, trappers, skilled stalkers, often with no family commitment who would keep tabs on happenings, who would track raiding parties or gather news from surrounding regions about who was getting attacked or if raids were imminent. The other thing is the idea of block houses, one fortified house in a community with supplies and suhc which could hypothetically hold of an attack long enough for reinforcements from another town or the nearest town to arrive if they were able to get a runner out. Some of these ideas with the implementation of more modern technologies (especially comms) could be adapted very very well for life in a grid down scenario. The single biggest one would be a comms network that could connect smaller communities and homesteads with everyone else (something like CB or HAM is perfect for this).

      @@PracticalReformation Agreed - community is vital to survival. I think those that live in/around big city suburbs (like me) are poorly prepared. We may last a few days, but that's about it. Resources evaporate quickly in such areas (2nd only to cities). The real challenge is that it's difficult to form a prepared community (ironically) in these areas. Most folks do their own thing (though we are generally communicative and friendly with each other). The notion of emergency preparedness is often viewed as paranoia and/or silliness. It's hard to find others that are willing to cooperate/plan for SHTF events. It's also very hard to convince neighbors to invest time/money in a coordinated manner.

    1)One year into SHTF- the never-ending supply train has long since dried up. NODS, weaponlights, illuminators, and any optic with zoom capabilities, etc.- are beginning to degrade, break, and de-power with no armorer, warranty or supply officer in sight. By year two- every rifle is back to iron sights- and all the other attachments have fallen the F off. Year three: Every cart fired is a re-load made in Bubba's shed.
    2)Without sewing skills- watch how fast the Ranger harnesses, backpacks, slings, and combat uniforms fray and fall apart.
    3)If you cannot increase the size of your tribe- your tribe will fail. Instead of just psychologically quitting due to losses- expand & carry on or become the slave they want of us.
    4)Recon, cache defense, hideout defense, bug-out, and close assault are all facets of the same defense. Survive to fight another day by maintaining the discipline to wheel thru your facets faster than your enemy can adapt.

    Greetings from Hungary! I've found your channel a couple months back, subscribed instantly - down to earth, when it comes to preparedness, valuable infos and interesting ways to look at certain problems...contents mostly for the average citizen ,wich i certainly appreciate😊 My only request would be about making more of those videos about shtf tactics, communication, etc. Risky does these stuff too, i also follow him, great dude with good, useable knowledge. I do love your reviews as well, but living in eastern europe kinda narrows my options to purchase tactical equipment - 90% of these stuff is not available around here, and if it is, multiply the price with 3 😅 But hey, skills over gear i guess! Anyway, thanks for the great content, keep up the good work my man!

    As someone who survived the serbs and croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina, you hit a lot of good points but i do wanna say a lot of these scenarios are more larping than real. Not minimizing them, but the sheer logistics often feel missed in these analysis. Who and what will be your front line logistics line, exfill, green zone etc. There is a lot to it. What saved us ultimately was people with courage and banding together. Remember, we were under embargo, no real weapons to speak of, and surrounded. We literally picked weapons off dead enemies fight after fight and armed able bodied people as the fighting occurred for years. It's much easier when you can identify the evildoers. But in a scenario where multiple groups wage resource and territorial warfare, a lot factors change. You will need larger groups, and you will need neighborhoods for safety and support.

      thanks for the input.
      It's worth considering though, it's unlikely a bosnia type situation can occur in the US simply due to size. As for weapons. There's a lot of them here. We have a sort of a tragedy of riches in that regard in the US.

    First off, great information. Liked and subscribed. Second, I think I might have something useful to add. I am NOT some Rambo wannabe. But a few years ago I started buying weapons, ammo, food, etc. I’m under no false pretense that I alone can hold back the hordes, but having weapons, ammo and supplies is a good place to start, and maybe have a better chance than those who don’t have them. But I digress. What I have to add is about drones. I’m a recreational drone flier. Got into it last year while recovering from knee surgery. It’s true, most drones on the market for average people don’t have a very long time loiter capability. For the average hobbyist drone flyer like myself, or even people who use them for commercial use (Roofing inspectors, realtors, etc.), we get somewhere around 25 - 30 minutes flight time per battery. Some models go longer of course, maybe around 40 minutes in the air. So admittedly, that would not be a real long time for recon over a wide area. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be used for short term observation. I’m in a small subdivision, with lightly populated rural areas all around. I have horses and cattle in large pastures back behind my neighborhood, with large fields (sugarcane, I’m in south Louisiana) and small areas of woods out there too. Every once in a while I hear a tractor running while I’m out flying. So I think to myself, that might be “trouble” of some kind. So I use my drone to get eyes on it. I have a tall wood privacy fence, so it’s not always possible to see things directly. This is just a small example of course, but it’s the mindset that counts. Every once in a while I’ll “spy” on one of the horses or cows. Safely of course, not close or low enough to spook or harm them. They may see it buzzing and hovering, but they don’t mind. Lol. Now I understand it’s a far cry trying to locate a running tractor or following around horses and cattle compared to observing hungry, dangerous bad guys, but practicing doing that can be an additional tool if things really go sideways. Another very useful tool they can provide is getting details of the terrain that your average satellite maps won’t show in detail. Even from lots of “B roll” video, you can see things from the air that might be useful. Just saying. And yes, I haven’t looked yet but a separate video on drone usage would be a cool idea if you don’t have that already.

    Good thought exploration sir. I found your channel through Hop and your gear reviews, but have stayed and subscribed due to 1. You and Hop's ability to seemingly hate everything that you review; which leads to you pointing out legitimate downfalls of products. 2. Your thought experiments that try to realistically apply scenarios with truly civilian considerations. I think the more we try to be honest about our needs and capabilities, the closer we can get to more achievable emergency preparedness.

    The late Colonel Copper developed the Scout Rifle as a tool of the lone scout. The concept of a lone Scout is an alternative to a recon team when manpower. Ammo, and resources are at a premium

    I think it’s much more important to have supplies, ammunition and a place to hide. I haven’t watched the whole video, but my sense is that doing recon is more for identifying threats and staying safe and hidden. Staying away from people is always the best strategy in think.

    Very good video. Though I caught a couple things. It's geared more for the short term. The initial days. I don't care how well prepped you think you are. That stored food will go really fast. You'll need a clean source of water both for your people but also for your crops, herds, sanitation and industrial uses. Until you are growing your own feed for your animals you are also keeping them safe against predators, theft, accidents and you need somebody out there keeping the shepherds safe from raiders and other dangers. Recon and patrols will be necessary to do that. Grazing animals need a lot of space to get enough food. Especially since you want to expand the herds as quickly as possible.
    Until you are not only self sufficient food wise by producing enough surplus to cover for droughts, disease, fires, etc and producing enough to feed your animals, and for industrial use as well as medical plants. Until then you are treading water looking for the nearest limb to grab onto. Somebody who has built that kind of resources.
    Recon is critical in protecting that infrastructure. Your power source may well be located a 1/2 mile from your main camp. Best to have that large amount of smoke somewhere other than where you live. Or it might be a water wheel and living right on the bank is unwise. Too much traffic plus risk of flooding. Your herds will need to roam acres to eat. You need to create a buffer between yourself and curious people who'll hear your chickens, goats, cows, etc.
    Food production needs to start day one, or if your smart you are already growing food and placing livestock in your tribe's expected gathering point, or at least raising them on your own or friend's property and have a plan on how to get it to your gathering spot Remember it takes at least 6 months to start harvesting crops and your herds will probably be needed for reproduction primarily the first year or two. So your stockpiles have to last that long and you have to guard your territory and resources to keep grazing land for YOUR herds. To keep people from getting close enough to discover what you have and thus be tempted to come for it.
    You also need redundancy as there will be attrition. Disease killing most. So if you start with 20 people, you've already probably shot yourself in the foot. Expect to lose at least 5 to disease. More if your idea of sanitation is outhouses and no running water for months on end. Especially if you do not have a doctor. Things happen. So even healthy people will be lost to animal attacks, accidents, or maybe just pull up stakes and walk out or die in a fight. If you have 3 people assigned to recon, 2 to shepherding, 10 to farming and you lose 5 you just lost as many as you possibly can and still be functional and that doesn't count harvesting, processing, food preservation, construction, fortification, digging, processing food, cooking, etc.

    Just a note on drones... Say you're in a shack or something near the top of a hill and you see a threat coming your way, that's when you throw up the drone way up directly overhead so you can watch the movement of the individual threats closing in on your position. That way you can determine which entries are getting pushed without wasting your man power by guarding everything at the same time while not knowing where anyone is.
