- VIDEO DESCRIPTION - This painting tutorial will take you through easy to follow, step-by-step instructions on how to paint this aquatic freshwater image of "BETTA FISH" with acrylic paint. You'll learn simple drawing and painting techniques that will help you to develop a realistic underwater animal that is moving through the water with it's bright flowing fins as it swims towards it's destination. Due to their varied and vibrant colors, diverse morphology, and relatively low maintenance, The Siamese fighting fish, aka Betta Fish, are one of the most popular fish pets and most widely available aquarium fish in the world. Using color theory to guide us through mixing complimentary colors and discussing what affect certain colors have on other colors that they sit next to, we'll develop a water scene and vibrant fish with perspective and depth. Learn how to add a dramatic border using a dry brush technique. To capture the action of movement in the painting, you'll learn how to paint the fins using a layering approach to capture tonal value changes in the colors, creating a fluid fabric look. The fins may resemble flower petals, bird wings, or a flowing dress by the time your done... and if they do, you've created great movement! You can customize the painting to be a different type of fish, like a Striped Mandarin, Flowerhorn, Angelfish, Clown, Rainbow, Parrotfish or a Peacock Cichlid, or you can change the color of the water to resemble a tropical oasis or a glass fish bowl tank. This painting is created in a realistic style with carefree brushstrokes allowing for a dramatic artistic painterly flare to be visible. Using simple painting techniques to add color contrast, as well as highlights and shadows, you'll bring the image to life with a 3-d photo realistic quality. You'll learn how to utilize a dark background for an easy way to add dimension to the form and shape of the tail and fins. The bold vibrant colors add a moodiness to the piece, but allow it to have a sense of quiet stillness allowing the fish to swim through this tranquil natural environment on it's solo journey. With the construction of the composition you'll have fun with the simplicity of the process, but you'll also learn some valuable lessons that you can utilize in future work! This painting is sure to impress the viewer and compliment the décor of any room. Using only 3 brushes and 7 colors we'll create this conversational masterpiece with a magnificent lively amphibian oceanic energy to it. So let's get painting and let's get sipping!

Canvas: 16x20 stretched primed canvas
Brushes: 1/2 inch flat bristle (large), #10 round synthetic (medium), #1 round synthetic (small)
Acrylic Paint: titanium white, mars black, fire red, deep yellow, phthalo green, fluorescent purple, cobalt blue
Other: white chalk, palette, cup of water for washing brushes, paper towel for drying brushes

STEPS:
1. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint background with green, black and white
2. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint border with black
3. chalk - Draw outline of fish
4. #10 round brush - Paint base coat of fish body with dark green (made in step 1), blue, black and white
5. #10 round brush - Paint base coat of fins with white, red and purple
6. #1 round brush - Finish facial features with black, white, yellow, purple, blue and red
7. #10 round brush - Finish body with dark green, blue, black, white, red, purple and yellow
8. #10 round brush - Finish fins with black, blue, purple, red, white, dark green
9. #1 round brush - Sign with dark green

Beta fish also called Siamese fighting fish are very aggressive. If you put 2 males together they will fight to the death. If you put a female with a male and she’s not ready to breed, the male will kill her.
You can put a mirror up next to the beta bowl and he will try to attack his reflection.
The female’s fins aren’t as full as the males but they are pretty.

This was so fun to paint, but one of my fins didn't look right so I went to a pet store to see how they really moved, his fin is better but $$$ for the tank supplies and my new Betta fish. I laughed so many times at you trying to say fins. You are just so fun to watch!

If need a stiff bristle brush.. I find that a stiff short bristle, fabric brush does GREAT for dry brushing.

I adore your work, I am learning a tremendous amount of technique! As a chef, I will never forget my mom explaining to me, regarding anything cooking related...."Less is best, you can always add more"..My theme...less is best when mixing colors! I have a tremendous amount of art supplies and of all the things I have, I have no chalk! HA! Would a crayon work, or pastel? I work a lot in encaustic, I made some white sticks, could I conceivably use that?
You don't want anything waxy or permanent. A soft pastel would be ok. Anything left on the canvas can be wiped off.

Could always use a pencil too. I use chalk so the viewers can actually see what I'm doing. Have fun painting!
