- Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Jimmy Page Licks From 1999.
Jimmy Page is an important influence for me and thousands (if not tens of thousands) of other players all over the planet, as his rough-and-tumble blues-rock phrasing blended with acoustic guitars, odd tunings, various tones/effects, not to mention those legendary riffs, fills, solos, and more. So there are countless reasons why so many players respect Jimmy Page and his legacy.
This lesson takes a look at some signature licks/phrases coming from Jimmy during his stint with playing/touring with The Black Crowes in the late 90s and early 2000s. Their 'Live At The Greek' live album from 1999 is an outstanding snapshot when fans were rabidly hungry for Led Zeppelin's music in concert, and that brief moment of time with Page and The Crowes working together delivered on that desire for more of Led Zep's music in a live setting.
The ideas in this episode feature some tasty blues-rock bending phrases, a slick hybrid-pentatonic idea, a scratch-and-sniff bluesy phrase with some raked-picking that's sure to give viewers some new ideas for building their own licks using a Jimmy Page template/approach.
This lesson also discusses the hybrid pentatonic scale in more detail, which is a very common mutation to the tried-and-true pentatonic scale formula and can easily be found in the playing of giants such as Mr. Page, not to mention other legends such as Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Slash, and many more.

My friend invited me to see the Crowes/Page band at a small club in Vegas-the Joint at the hard rock cafe. I got off the plane to my buddy telling me that the show had been cancelled! I didn't find out til 20 years later after reading Steve Gorman's book. I was basically going to see Jimmy Page in a small club, but twas not to be!! Crushed!

Great stuff as usual David, love the videos and what you do for us guitar geeks.. Jimmy Page is a legend, and YES he was a bit sloppy but he did everything on the guitar and could write a song!, That is sometimes "missed" when discussing great players but lets remember Jimmy Page could write a helluva tune

His playing on Led Zeppelin LIVE "How the West Was Won" (1972 or '73 in California) is actually rather darn precise! The whole band is tighter than a mosquito butt!!!
Page says that year was when the band was most on top of their game. Page is actually shredding Blues and he's also shredding his Chet Atkins country influence!
After only hearing their plodding live performances from the concert film "The Song Remains the Same," I never figured they had it in them to KICK ASS live. But I was wrong!

Really enjoyed this video! I used to fall asleep high with my detachable speakers a foot from each ear. Tea For One was great that way -so was No Quarter. Jimmy has his sloppy moments, but he has some wonderfully tasteful chops and accidental sweet gems of improv. Thanks, David!

The best band ever period. I was a Zeppelin fan before I knew it, when I first watch Fast Times and a clip of Kashmir was playing...didn't know it then. Years past I was 14 and was awaken by Zeppelin VI, the rest is history.
You should do a Jimmy Page chord video. Songs that come to mind are Ten Years Gone, Rain Song, Achilles Last Stand....among others.
The difference between the big three, Beck, Page and Clapton is that Beck is still progressing. Page had his day and Clapton had his. Beck is still experimenting with guitars and techniques. He's a guitarists guitarist.
I would love for David to do a deep-dive into DADGAD Tuning!

@@LoveGuitar63277 absolutely. I looked up the tunings he used in songs thinking it was just a couple like D tuning and C tuning but boy was I wrong. His layering is astounding.

Great tone and vibrato! Nice to hear that you're such a Page/Zeppelin fan. I make my living as a guitarist and teacher and I've collected live Zeppelin since vinyl bootlegs in 1977. In the end, it's Zeppelin's writing and ensemble playing that makes them so great. His lead playing is a huge cherry on the sundae, and he was a master at lead and rhythm at the same time. The live versions of Dazed and Confused, No Quarter, Since I've Been Loving You, and the RnR/Blues medleys in Whole Lotta Love provide contrasts in mood and style like few guitarists could pull off.

Dave another great lesson.👍 Jimmy was very versatile in his playing . He also was a great engineer n knew how to record n overdub tracks. The word was that blues guitarist Robert Johnson was a big influence on him n several other players back then, n from what I heard it's been said that players like himself stole alot of his material n made it there own (supposedly) n lyrics to some early Zeppelin tunes. I look at it this way every musician is inspired by other musicians. From there they take what they have learned n make it there own. The Em hybrid pentatonic scale is one of the most smoothest/ koolest scales played which many players have used. ROCK ON DAVE ! 👊👍🎸😎
I always argue with myself who wrote better riffs than Page? The only guy I ever come up with maybe as many great riffs & hooks is Iommi. Page, like him or not, wrote iconic riffs that’ll last forever!

Page's licks were so damn tasty! People disrespect him for being sloppy, but his sloppiness STILL said more than the most technical fret burners (which were probably all mostly influenced by him).
By the way...I have a lead on that Behringer amp!!! Been talking to a dude selling for a great price. He lives too far, but has family in the next town over from me. Says he often visits so will load it up in his car and give me a shout next time he's coming into town. Don't know when yet. It's in * MINT * condition!!!
Page isn't sloppy AT ALL on Led Zeppelin LIVE "How the West Was Won." He and the band are PRECISE on that one!!!! He shreds his country style and blues on that recording!
Live At The Greek brings another sick guitar player to mind... Audley Freed! I can’t recall, but have you done a video on Audley’s time with Cry Of Love or his session work yet? There’s some SICK stuff all over those two albums. ✌🏼

@@jamesmorgan2064 It doesn't seem to sound as bad as Page took it, but when Page offered to co-write songs on the next Black Crows album, Rich Robinson said that they don't need any new songs.
Now, that could be a seemingly mild slight in isolation, but who knows? Maybe Rich Robinson was making several digs against Page & that was the one that finally pissed Page off...

I haven't read the book but the way the last tour was cut short due to Jimmy throwing his back out trying to keep up with his young girlfriend in a nightclub had to have something to do with the ultimate falling out, not to mention driving Jimmy into semi-retirement.

I hope you do a jimmy page Open Tuning lesson and Acoustic Guitar chords. I heard he uses the dominant 7th note often in his blues licks so his pentatonic scales sound more dominant 7th licks used more in the album Presence. The guitarist in STP dean really learned how to use those weird Jimmy page chords because STP dean uses some chords that are what jimmy page would do which most guitarist overlooked as in chords. The live concerts in 1990-1994 with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page his guitar solos sounded tasty to learn some licks off of him around this era which are hard to find good quality audio because page and plant sounded good still in that era.

Listen to the Zep I and II and you'll hear a lot of licks that are part of just about every hard rock guitarists arsenal. These licks - the way they are played now - came from Jimmy - whether you copped them from Jimmy himself, or from Michael Schenker, or Slash, or Zakk Wylde, or someone else who was copping Jimmy.
Love your videos. It would be great to see something on Queensryche. They had unique riffs, melodies and harmonies.

Page was who inspired me to start playing many moons ago.
And keep in mind jimmy also produced all of the Led Zeppelin albums and was absolutely brilliant in the studio.

Dave you really ought to read (if you haven’t already) Steve Gorman’s book Hard To Handle. He describes what went down with Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes. Great lesson as usual.
Page is in my top 5, just because of his style, ingenuity, alternate tunings. Great stage presence (Jake is the best for that). I'm going to get killed for this, but Clapton doesn't do it for me, never really has. No disrespect, but my ears don't perk up. thanks B🐓!! 😉👍
I love Clapton with Cream, but after that, I'm not quite as intrigued with his style.

I always broke the 3 players styles down to this;
1) Clapton was a craftsman
2) Page took you on journeys
3) Beck told stories

For the longest time, I was not into Zeppelin. They got played a lot on Q95. I think you know Q95 right? haha! Anyway, it felt kinda like what we used to call "dirt" rock. But there's a happy ending to this. Later as I got more into playing music I realized what Zeppelin was doing with time. I really admire them for that. It's also interesting to look into the mythology of the band. I read Hammer of the Gods. They were always featured in the backmasking lectures in the 80s. So fascinating stuff. Very well-crafted music. Sometime if you ever feel like it, I would love to learn about some of those time signatures. Like what the heck is going on in Black Dog? Anyway, thanks for the great lesson!

I WAS GOING TO GO SEE THEM IN PHOENIX FOR THAT CROWS TOUR , I SAW PAGE PLANT IN 98 AT THE END OF THE SUMMER, AND SAW CLAPTON AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SUMMER, CLAPTON IS AWESOME, AND I THOUGHT PAGE IS GOING TO HAVE TO REALLY BE GOOD TO TOP CLAPTON,... HE WALKED OUT PUT THE STRAP OVER HIS SHOULDER AND BROKE INTO HEARTBREAKER AND THEY DIDN'T STOP FOR CLOSE TO 3 HOURS, CALLED BARELY HEAR ROBERT OR THE REST OF THE BAND, ALL YOU HEARD WAS JIMMY, AND IT WAS AWESOME !!! NO ONE SAT DOWN, THOUGHT THE ROOF WAS GOING TO FLY OFF THE PLACE.. . SO WHEN HE WAS GOING TO COME BACK I WAS SO AMPED, HAD CENTER STAGE 5TH ROW SEATS. THEN THEY CANCELED, THE STORY WAS SOMEONE GOT SICK WITH FLU OR SOMETHING, .. HELD THOSE TICKETS FOR AWHILE HOPING THEY'D DO A RESCHEDULE BUT NEVER DID FINALLY TOOK THEM TO GET MY MONEY BACK.. WISH I'D KEPT THEM AS SOUVENIRS .... JIMMY IS THE MAN AND ALWAYS WILL BE .... I read Jimmy was fascinated with Aleister Crowley and Kenneth Anger although he had a falling out with Anger. I would say he was seriously into the occult which probably fueled his heroin addiction.

What are you trying to say (in a rather inefficient way, illustrated by the fact that even though I might have an idea what your getting at, I still have to ask, because your desire to be clever deluted any precision a less clever sentence would have inherently had), and who are you directing it to?
The thing about Page is that it’s misleading to just listen to a few solos and judge him on that basis. Jimmy Page is so multi-dimensional; albums, songs and concerts all display so many Page ideas woven into a big picture that it becomes cinematic. I don’t think any guitarist in history - including all of those who are more advanced players technically or cleaner - created as big a canvas as Jimmy Page. For that matter, had such command of drama and dynamics.
I like Jimmy Page in terms of recording Zeppelin (ie, I am a fan of Jimmy the player). I am not a fan of the stuff Jimmy Page did on the side (ie, not a fan of Jimmy as a person).
