    On Jake Loves Stories, I watch movies for the first time at viewer requests and I give my breakdown during the movie reaction using my screenwriting knowledge that I gained from 8 years of studying screenwriting and earning a Bachelors degree in Film, while also trying to just enjoy the film.

    When this movie was new and we saw the part about library records being tracked, it was a scary thought and we wondered if it was real. Now, only 30 years later, we all know that everything that we do, read, and watch is retrievable.

    "What's in the box?"
    Fun Fact: When filming the "sloth" victim scene, the SWAT officers were NOT told that the victim was still alive. When the victim coughs and scares the SWAT officers, that reaction is real.
    Standing Together Fact: The ending in the movie is the ending in the original draft of the screenplay that the actors and director had signed on to. Producer Arnold Kopelson had it re-written, and the ending was changed to John Doe kidnapping Tracy, with Mills and Somerset racing to save her life. When David Fincher, Brad Pitt, and Morgan Freeman read the new ending, they all demanded that the original ending be put back in or they wouldn't do the movie.
    Art Over Ego Fact: The producers intended that Kevin Spacey should receive top billing at the start of the movie, but he insisted that his name not appear in the opening credits, so as to surprise the audience with the identity of the killer. To compensate, he is listed twice in the closing credits, once before the credits start rolling and once in the rolling credits in order of appearance. Another advantage from Spacey's point of view, as he saw it, was that he was excluded from the film's marketing during its release, meaning he didn't have to make any public appearances or do any interviews.

    32:04 He knew it because David gave it to him in the stairwell (at 12:58). And immediately after that William remarks about David feeding off his emotions. So not only did the photographer know David's name but he also identified which deadly sin David would be most prone to succumb to all in one scene.

    Brad doesn't need to die for wrath, Kevin already did. Envy's death is Gwyneth (wife), Wrath is Kevin's.

      My interpretation is that Tracy's death as an innocent is John's ultimate sin of envy. Hence, his punishment for that is his own death and sparing her husband's life. But not before also psychologically damaging David for his wrath.

  • @el-violador
    @el-violador Рік тому +8

    I love how this movie handles gore. It doesn't show any directly yet somehow feels more graphic. Especially lust. They turn the tension up before they reveal what happened. Then your mind does the rest.
    I also love the small touches. Tracy's face when William says to "spoil that kid every chance you get"? You see her heart break so realistically. That small flash of Tracy's face the moment before David shoots John and the change of facial expression when David decides to kill him is perfect. You notice the bed sores on the sloth victim are weeping. When you realise that David gives his full name to the "photographer". Even the scene where John has the gun to David's head. You think that he can't do it because he's not a sinner but in reality his "change of plans" is that he's changing who the sin of wrath is. I'm also really glad you picked up on the high voltage power lines keeping the helicopter at a distance.
    An absolute masterclass that unlike most thrillers gets better with every watch

    • @marvelsandals4228
      @marvelsandals4228 Рік тому

      To be fair, the only people he kills were "sinners" that he was "casting divine judgment on," or what not...aside from his last victim. Perhaps that's a flaw with the movie. He is established as having a strict (albeit extremely fucked up) moral code that he abides by to such great lengths...then randomly kills her. She didn't do anything, unless he was judging her for making the moves on Morgan Freeman lol

      @@marvelsandals4228 Killing Tracy was John's ultimate sin of envy. Hence, he had to die as well and spare her husband's life despite already psychologically punishing David's wrath.

    • @marvelsandals4228
      @marvelsandals4228 Рік тому

      @@jp3813 If that's true then I guess it wasn't all part of his master plan, at least not initially. His plan WAS to be a pure judge killing evildoers, then he fell for Tracy, and committed evil himself, THEN after doing so decided he needed to die for his sins, mailed her head to that location, then turned himself in, because he wanted David to punish him for what he had done. Woah

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 Рік тому

      @@marvelsandals4228 It was all due to Mills & Somerset discovering his hideout. He said that he'll be readjusting his schedule. After all, he didn't even know Mills before taking the picture on the stairs. In keeping w/ the religious themes, no person is sinless. Hence, even John had to atone.

    Great review ! As always ! I appreciate you pause the movie to explain so you dont miss a scene haha, but im sure you can do both at the same time. That movie terrified me when I was young ! But on the rewatch as I got older, its a masterpiece ! …. And yeah, its Mel Gibson, not Tom Cruise hahaha, but hey, honnest mistake they were both major popular actor in the 90’s hehe. Keep up the good work man ! And its a shame what Kevin Spacey did on his personal life but damn, what an incredible actor ! I believe that art should be saperate from the indiviual. I don’t respect the person he is, but I respect the art and the performance he as done.

      1. I was having an existential crisis where I thought maybe this was a Mandela effect thing where it has been so many years since I saw Lethal Weapon that somehow my memories of Mel Gibson being in that movie were wrong and it was really Tom Cruise all along lol
      2. Yeah I have the same rule when it comes to anybody involved in the creation of "art," be it a movie, music, games, etc. Once an artist collaborates in creating something, the product takes on a life of its own. The film, Seven, is a distinct entity from the actor, Kevin Spacey. I can objectively say the character of John Doe is compelling & even that Kevin Spacey's performance in the film is excellent & elevates the film. That is not condoning anyone or anything. That is just analyzing a work of art & the artistry that went into it. It is possible to watch a movie without being bffs with every person involved in it lol

      I mean realistically...this dude made it his personal mission to ruin David's life. He found his house, (if we read between the lines) r*ped his wife, apparently she begged for her life & the life of their baby, he killed her anyway, then cut her head off, put it in a box, & shipped it to a location he then tricked David into being when it was delivered, just to fuck with him. David finds out all of this AND the fact that his unborn baby (that he didn't even know about) died with his wife as well. I mean...what, you're just going to say "you're under arrest, buddy! Crime doesn't pay!" and walk away? Yeah...let's be real, if I was him...yeah imma shoot lol
