The Bible is one of the most mistranslated books of all time. Take something that was translated through Hebrew to Greek to Latin to English and compare it to the original Hebrew and an original translation of what the words meant at the time and you will get two completely different things. When the scribes translated the Greek Septuagint they purposely changed words and wrote entire expanded books trying to push their interpretations. Most people think Elohim and Yahweh are the same thing, but if you read the book of Job in the original Hebrew it says Elohim is the Adversary of Yahweh.
@@Mortismors True, but does it matter ? The Coran is not translated and still there more than one interpretation. Whatever you recognize the old testament (the Torah), the Coran, or the old and new testaments (bible), it doesn't change that much It is the same "concept" of the all mighty perfect being with all the philosophical issues that come with. Kevin Smith touched some of them in this movie.
@@vincentvoillot6365 knowing the correct translation helps. Take Iblis, in Islam he is the devil and was the Adversary to God but he wasn't a fallen Angel he is the first of the Jinn. The whole story of Lucifer rebelling and falling with a third of the Angels is a made up story by those scribes embellishing a previous story about the wicked ones before the flood. If you take the books of Job and first Enoch in the original Hebrew they tell of this Iblis and his sons of Elohim who sinned against the birds and beasts and ate human flesh. These were the ones the flood was sent to wipe out. This Adversary to God this god king who wanted to be the Lord of the World gets remembered as the Devil as the Adversary (Satan). But he's just a mortal king, sure he was so evil he gets remembered through time but without correct translations you get superstitions. And I would argue people believe more in the superstitions than the religions original teachings.
@@Mortismors That's interesting to me. I've been trying to bone up on my religious history and have been wondering if there's a way I can get a legitimate translation from the original texts because I figured it would be a lot easier than trying to learn Hebrew.
@@Mortismors That is not my point, this is still details. Good versus Evil is the duality of men, whatever the protagonist are called. If God is all knowing, being past, present and future, that mean he know everything you did, doing and will do. This include Adam and Eve eating an apple. So he did knew that it will happen and banish them from paradise anyway ? Or did he created them at his "image", with free will (including the possibility of disobeying his order) and didn't knew what they will do ? God cannot be wrong.. So he knew after creating humanity, he will have to kill everyone except Noah and his family ? God cannot be omnipotent and good, there is evil in this world (diseases, natural catastrophes), so he cannot or don't want to stop it. Nothing intelligent created us, proof of it, using the same path for eating and breathing. Any decent engineer would tell you this is dumb. I can go on, but that is not a question of translation or interpretation.
Now that you've seen all the Kevin Smith movies up to DOGMA, I'm looking forward to you doing JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK: it's my favorite of his movies, and since it's essentially an hour-and-a-half in-joke for his fans, you'll understand it to its fullest now :)
This was one of the greatest movies ever. Great actors, comedians, great singer. Btw , it wasnt just a movie,it was a message. Be kind ,be humble and help one another. Listen and you will hear. 😉 Thx for taking the effort to highlight this movie. It means a lot.❤️
There is a marvelous deleted scene with Azrael explaining hell. I'm always so bummed that it was removed, but you can watch it by searching for "Evil is an abstract"
Yes. It was a dope scene. But what I took away from the scene was that he made the choice to sit on the sidelines & do nothing & paid the price for it.
If you haven't seen Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, there's a nod to that movie here. In that movie, Indiana Jones throws a nazi SS officer out the window of a zeppelin. To the passengers looking at him in shock, he says, "No ticket", at which point they all rush him to show him their ticket stubs. That's one of my favorite parts of the entire movie.
Great reaction Mary Cherry! I think you followed better than other reactors because you make your comments quickly without talking over a lot of dialogue. It's one of the things that make you a great reactor!
I'm so glad you liked it. It's a brilliant script; full of provoking ideas, with humor to help package it better. Many couldn't get it but I'm glad you did
Thank you for reacting to this!! My all time favorite movie. Also, the woman playing the nun at the beginning was a regular on Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, she played Lady Aberline in it.
I remember when this was filmed because I live very close to some of the locations. In fact, the restaurant where they get the tequila is still open and they have the movie poster hanging above the table where Alan and Linda sat.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. Kevin Smith has reported that unfortunately, Harvey Weinstein managed to get the rights from Disney/Miramax. Around the time the allegations were coming out about Harvey, Kevin made a couple offers to purchase the rights from him, but he wouldn't let them go. That's why it's not available to stream and almost impossible to purchase.
Technically, the content of the movie isn't the reason you can't rent or officially stream it anywhere, but I guess it kind of indirectly is. The movie was originally supposed to be released by Miramax in 1998, but Disney (who owned Miramax at the time) didn't want to be associated with it, so they refused to put it out. Then Harvey Weinstein bought the film outright and made a theatrical distribution deal with Lions Gate (who finally released the movie in 1999) and a home media deal with Sony. Both of those deals expired years ago, so the rights reverted to Weinstein. (The Sony DVD and Blu-ray releases are long out of print, but used copies are out there.) According to Kevin Smith, he's tried to buy the movie back, but Weinstein was asking an exorbitant price that he couldn't (and no one else wanted to) pay.
When Silent Bob says "no ticket" after throwing them off the train, that's a reference to a classic scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. You should definitely watch that if you haven't yet. Great reaction!
Not sure if you're aware but Jason Mewes (Jay) is now a twitch streamer, his tag is 'jaymewes'. He streams games and occasionally has Kevin Smith on his channel.
If you watch the scenes with George Carlin as the cardinal, you'll see that he has a band-aid on his ring finger. Kevin Smith said that he's wearing it because George Carlin's wife had recently died, and he couldn't bring himself to take off his wedding ring yet. And since a cardinal wouldn't be married, they had to cover it up for the movie.
29:50 "Im going back to Wisconsin" lol love that line of many. Thank you for doing this film grew up on it and believe should be mandatory viewing. This and Romeo + Juliet
It's worth mentioning that Kevin Smith made this movie in an attempt to rediscover his religious faith and that he joined in on a Catholic protest against the movie on opening night. He tried really hard to make good protest signs too.
Thx for the reaction mary. This is definitely one of Kevin Smith's best movies, amazing cast and performances. My favorite is clerks 2, which I'm sure you will get to eventually.
Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back are my favorite Kevin Smith movies, and the only ones I'd watch again and again. They're hilarious and yet this one was very thought provoking. Janeane Garofalo!! She was one of my favorite 90's IT girls. I suggest her movie with Uma Thurman called THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS. If you've ever taken interpersonal communications classes then this movie serves as example after example of the study of it. It's also Janeane humor turned up, yet adorable. 😅
I went to a catholic high school and for my senior service project, I painted a mural in one of the school classrooms depicting moments in church history, ending with Pope Francis. I painted him doing the Buddy Christ pose from this movie and nobody noticed.
I originally had DOGMA on VHS, until my VCR (If ANYONE asks what either of these are in the comments, 4Q.) died on me, forcing me to join the 21st. century and get a DVD player.
The part where Jason Lee tells Silent Bob to take a shot, “call it a gift” is taken from The Howling where a werewolf gives a guy a free shot not being aware that the guy had silver bullets in his rifle.
Alan Rickman was an absolute gem. He was so personable and Kevin had a wonderful relationship with Alan until his passing. I love what Kevin said of Alan after his passing. I just had to post it here. “Thank you for lending a hack like me your artistry and your credibility, Alan. You were never Snape to me as much as you were the adult Harry Potter himself: a bonafide wizard who could conjure absolute magic using merely words. “He was a HUGE cauldron of win, this man. I’ll miss him forever. Rest in Peace, Voice of God. Back to Heaven, where you came from …” I’m not 100% sure but it might have been Alan who would have loved to do something again with Kevin, but it didn’t come to be because of his passing.
I used to live 5 minutes from the church they came through. Too bad the church didn't hold up well, they can't tear it down because it's a historical landmark, but it's in really rough shape compared to when this was made. It's basically falling apart.
One of my favorite movies ever. I bought it on VHS way back in the day. Then a few years ago I couldn't find it, and eventually gave up looking for it, then managed to buy a copy on DVD. The weekend after the DVD arrived, a friend gave me a bag full of VHS tapes as they were upgrading their media, and apoarently I had loaned them my VHS copy a long time before, because there it was, like a miracle a couple weeks too late. 😂 But the DVD is much better quality so it's fine... 😊
This is my most favorite Kevin Smith movie (and I love all of them). It's so well written... funny and clever, and honestly IMO makes great points about religion and humanity. A+
When you are saying "Immaculate Conception" you actually mean the dogma of "Virgin Birth." It is a common error; Immaculate Conception is a different dogma stating that Biblical Mary was conceived without Original Sin (yet another dogma).
You miss the reference to "the morning star", which is a reference to Lucifer. It's when Bartleby and Loki have been tossed off the train by Silent Bob and Bartleby is now full-on committed to having a war on God that he's hit with that reference; Lucifer led the very first revolt against God, fell from Heaven, and founded Hell. At least in the Catholic canon. I think you also missed the reference to that Mooby Cow: the Golden Calf, aka 'idolatry'. Alanis Morissette is overlooked nowadays as God, but what's worse is NO ONE recognizes Bud Cort ("Brewster McCloud", "Harold and Maude") also as God. It's Bud Cort as God that the three hockey demon kids beat up and put in the hospital, trapping God from intervening with Bartleby and Loki's plan to enter the church arch and destroy reality. Bud Cort was an incredible actor in his younger days. Bethany learning the Truth of her ancestry, then falling into 'random water' seems a mash-up of Jesus being baptized by his cousin John the Baptist and Jesus's agony in the Garden of Gethsemane when Jesus asked if this 'cup' (the coming crucifixion) could be taken from him. Joseph and Mary were indeed married. Jesus had, IIRC, 3 siblings via Joseph.
This is the absolute pinnacle of of the View Askewniverse for me but I bet you will also greatly enjoy the Jay and Silent Bob movies and Clerks sequels. Fantastic reaction.
I have a t-shirt with Jay & Silent Bob that says, “A Woman’s body is Her own f@$&ing business.” I absolutely love this movie soooo much. I hope that you continue the View Askewniverse journey.
Editing this must have been a nightmare, having to blank out all those f-bombs. And I've been wondering why Jay and Bob count as prophets for a long time. I think it's because, since they're present for every movie in this series, they're kind of like the narrators.
Chris Rock (Rufus, the guy who fell from the sky and “looks familiar”) has been the most lauded stand-up comic in the US since the 1990s. His movie *Top Five* is my second favorite comedy of this millennium and I highly highly recommend it. I’ll add, the special that rocketed him to super-stardom is called “Bring The Pain”. It is amazing and it would be wonderful to see your reaction to it; but, and this sucks about modern culture, I genuinely think you would feel really uncomfortable being authentic in your reactions if you knew you were going to present it to the world. So maybe you should watch it on your own time. But definitely watch it. And his other specials, too. Most recently he was slapped by Will Smith at the Oscars, which I’m sure you heard about.
This is one of my favorite films. I highly recommend viewing Upon Friar Review's reaction to this film. I'm not religious myself, but I found their insights and opinions very interesting.
Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back Next PLEASE!!! Proud member of the Coalition for the Liberation of Itinerant Tree Dwellers 🐵
Recognize, none of the mythology referenced in this movie is from the Bible or any other sacred text. It’s all based on John Milton's "Paradise Lost." Don’t confuse any story about Loki or Bartelby or Asrael or whomever as any actual, well, DOGMA.
Wow, it's great that you watched this one, Mary! It seems to be a rarity among UA-camrs (for good reason I guess). Much respect. I still think this is Kevin Smith's most thoughtful and personal movie. His subsequent movies have not been as ambitious (although they are still entertaining).
The one other character nobody mentioned in the comments is that the nun at the start of the movie is Betty Aberlein - Lady Aberlein from the children’s show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood”
Although in the end he went crazy, I always thought that Bartleby was right, God applied a much harsher punishment to them than they really deserved, I mean beyond Loki's rude gesture towards God, he only suggested to his friend to quit his job and take another one that doesn't involve killing, too much punishment for so little

This. Jay and Silent Bob Strike back is the movie for maximum Jay & Bob.
Love when you don't read the blurb & go in completely blind. You never know what you're walking into & it's great
This was one of the greatest movies ever.
@@HalfCracker4life He did yes. But it's such a cool description of hell, and you actually understand why he would do anything not to return.
Agreed, but I was disappointed that she didn't include the "make myself a profit" line that revealed that Jay and Silent Bob were the prophets.
This is one of my favorite movies and it's unbelievable the Avengers Level Threat cast this movie has for being such an underappreciated gem.
This movie has a special place in my heart. It is so smart, thought-provoking, and funny.
I own it on VHS and DVD.
I haven't had a working VCR in a while, but I'm going to find one eventually. I just know it.
The answer was very simple but clever. Bethany’s answer “is as plain as the nose on her face.” That’s why she booped her nose.
No, the answer is there is no answer because "purpose" is a myth and, also, it is not a "why" question.
I always thought the answer was no reason other than God was in a funny mood that day and did something impetuous. lol
I don't get why God can make that sound and not kill people.
Always thought this was such a great choice to have Alanis Morissette play God, just seemed to work with the whole vibe of the movie
This is by far my favorite View Askew chapter, with Jay and Silent Bob Strike back as a close second. Thanks for reacting to this!
Same here, Mallrats is my third, only because I've not seen any of the others.
I love this movie. I own it on DVD. The cast is perfect with Chris Rock, Alan Rickman, George Carlin and Alanis Morissette.
I'm so glad I own this movie on DVD.
You and me both.
When Silent Bob says "no ticket" after throwing them off the train, that's a reference to a classic scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. You should definitely watch that if you haven't yet. Great reaction!
Thanks, Mary, for sharing your reaction to this.
Not sure if you're aware but Jason Mewes (Jay) is now a twitch streamer, his tag is 'jaymewes'. He streams games and occasionally has Kevin Smith on his channel.
😂 I can't believe you skipped the amazing, "We went through three Adams before we worked that out."
🤣🤣🤣
If you watch the scenes with George Carlin as the cardinal, you'll see that he has a band-aid on his ring finger. Kevin Smith said that he's wearing it because George Carlin's wife had recently died, and he couldn't bring himself to take off his wedding ring yet. And since a cardinal wouldn't be married, they had to cover it up for the movie.
29:50 "Im going back to Wisconsin" lol love that line of many. Thank you for doing this film grew up on it and believe should be mandatory viewing. This and Romeo + Juliet
42:35 God is Alanis Morissette
It's worth mentioning that Kevin Smith made this movie in an attempt to rediscover his religious faith and that he joined in on a Catholic protest against the movie on opening night. He tried really hard to make good protest signs too.
I guess you can say I saw God since I went to an Alanis Morrissette concert two years ago. Great show.
Thx for the reaction mary. This is definitely one of Kevin Smith's best movies, amazing cast and performances. My favorite is clerks 2, which I'm sure you will get to eventually.
I can't believe that you did not recognize Alanis Morrisette!
I'm not gonna lie, that made feel old.
She probably knows her songs but doesn't know what she looks like. Makes sense.
She casually mentions god was Alanis Morrisette at 48:35 so maybe she did recognize her.
Different generations
Random memory unlocked watching this. I can still remember where Comedy Central out all the commercial breaks in the TV edit.
Love this movie. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is next!
This movie has been in my DVD collection for about 15 years & it's still good to drag it out occasionally to shock & amuse visitors.
I originally had DOGMA on VHS, until my VCR (If ANYONE asks what either
of these are in the comments, 4Q.) died on me, forcing me to join the 21st.
century and get a DVD player.
Back to Heaven, where you came from …”
I’m not 100% sure but it might have been Alan who would have loved to do something again with Kevin, but it didn’t come to be because of his passing.
I love this movie so much, fantastic movie overall and everyone acting was on point!!!
The Cardinal, played by George Carlin, was one of the most outspoken Atheists of his time.
Alanis Morressette as god was brilliant.
I used to live 5 minutes from the church they came through. Too bad the church didn't hold up well, they can't tear it down because it's a historical landmark, but it's in really rough shape compared to when this was made. It's basically falling apart.
Most reactors I see don't even recognize her in this movie. Oh boy, I guess it has been a couple decades.
The fact she doesn't recognise her makes me feel sooo old 😂
@@wesleybush8646 I'm surprised by that, I thought she would have more appeal among the younger generation.
They recognize her music but not her face, probably were babies when her music videos were in heavy rotation.
In the deleted scenes there is An amazing speech Jason Lee gives about hell and how it's humans fault its a suffering pitman still mad they cut it
Alanis Morressette is my favorite version of God.
I Agree! Hallelujah!
When I saw the thumbnail, I got genuinely excited. Dogma is in my top 5 and it doesn't get the attention it deserves.
Possibly Rickman's greatest role!!
I remember really liking Dogma. That was also the peak of my Linda Cardellini and Salma Hayek phases.
Are you mixing your Linda actresses up?
Linda Cardellini or Linda Fiorentino?
@@L3onOfKings Yes...although I did also have a Cardellini phase, too, but I was older then.
When you are saying "Immaculate Conception" you actually mean the dogma of "Virgin Birth." It is a common error; Immaculate Conception is a different dogma stating that Biblical Mary was conceived without Original Sin (yet another dogma).
Thanks! I came here to say exactly this. I am not even religious but it amazes me how many people get this confused.
Seriously, thank you for clarifying this. I am not a Catholic, but I should be better at knowing these basic tenets.
I rented this & Galaxy Quest at the same time, not knowing Alan Rickman was in both. Was A great movie weekend
So excited for this, one of my all-time fav movies!
The "No Ticket" reference is great. Indiana Jones series is a must seen. 😂
This movie is just....splendid.
Jason Mewes, who plays Jay was so worried about agreeing up in front of Alan Rickman he memorized the whole script in
This is the absolute pinnacle of of the View Askewniverse for me but I bet you will also greatly enjoy the Jay and Silent Bob movies and Clerks sequels. Fantastic reaction.
I have a t-shirt with Jay & Silent Bob that says, “A Woman’s body is Her own f@$&ing business.” I absolutely love this movie soooo much. I hope that you continue the View Askewniverse journey.
I've always had my own body, I might have grown inside my mother, but it's MY body.
The song 'still' by Alanis morrissette at the end credits is gorgeous. Beautiful lyrics
Clerks 3 turned out to be pretty good ties up the whole story neatly
I love this movie. I saw it In the theater and couldn't wait to own a copy. I have a copy of it with all of the extras, deleted scenes and commentary.
Editing this must have been a nightmare, having to blank out all those f-bombs. And I've been wondering why Jay and Bob count as prophets for a long time. I think it's because, since they're present for every movie in this series, they're kind of like the narrators.
"Snooch To The Muthafukkin Noochies." Is in my opinion
the GREATEST opening line for any character EVER.
I’m so glad I still have my dvd bonus set from 2003. Suuuuch a good movie. Kevin smith just makes aaaaall the important points.
I'm curious what's your number one comedy?
@@CannonRaw All time? The original *The Producers *(1967). This millennium? *Midnight In Paris*.
This is one of my favorite films.
I highly recommend viewing Upon Friar Review's reaction to this film.
I'm not religious myself, but I found their insights and opinions very interesting.
Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!!
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Next PLEASE!!!

One of my all-time favourite films..That and Life of Brian.
OMG one of my All time FAVORITE FILMS =D
Love this movie, glad i have it on dvd still.
Old kevin smith is so good!
Clerks and dogma are two of the funniest movies ever imo.
Great movie! A true classic! 👍 ❤
This is not only one of my favorite View Askew movies, but this is one of my favorite movies of all time.
If they had taljed about islam in that way, the moviemakers would be dead.
True. That's because Christians are easy targets that don't fight back, unfortunately.
Because those followers are insecure
Apparently, the "Dogma" DVD is once again available on Amazon.
I just had a copy delivered.
The nun is played by Betty Abernin, who was in Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, a kids' show on public tv in the United States starting in the 1960s.
The one other character nobody mentioned in the comments is that the nun at the start of the movie is Betty Aberlein - Lady Aberlein from the children’s show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood”
Probably my favourite Kevin Smith film. It and Jay and Silent Bob Strikeback are easily switchable.
Although in the end he went crazy, I always thought that Bartleby was right, God applied a much harsher punishment to them than they really deserved, I mean beyond Loki's rude gesture towards God, he only suggested to his friend to quit his job and take another one that doesn't involve killing, too much punishment for so little
Crazy that my blu ray copy of this is now worth more than $200.
