Possibly the greatest thriller of the 90s. It is SO well written and directed and paced. When this came out, it blew just about everybody away. It became an instant classic (IMO).
This movie literally changed the standard of how crime thrillers are done. Anything gritty and dark in the latter half of the 90s owes something to Se7en.
“Something about her is off.” Umm, that would be her head.
I literally read that, put my phone down… walked to the window, and sipped my coffee for a minute before coming back. LAWD!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😂

As far as we know, this was the first movie to have such a heavily stylized opening credits montage.
Yeah aside from it being creepy I much prefer this to just scenic views
I guess maybe we have different definitions of what stylized means, so it could just be a matter of taste, but I can think of dozens that did it before "Se7en" did. These may be spoilers if you ever want to watch these, Nia (although only spoilers of the opening credits, but still spoilers), so be warned:
First, we have "Lord of War." The life of a bullet from manufacture until it kills a child? Very unique and interesting. And while it only premiered like a week before "Se7en," it still technically came first.
We have the "Dawn of the Dead" remake in 1994, with the montage of civil unrest, religious imagery, riots, arson, zombies growling and blood moving behind the actual credits and with that Johnny Cash (I think?) music over it. They always stand out in my head. And while I generally hate country music, that song gets stuck in my head for weeks.
We have the opening for "Alien 3" in 1992, with those quick flashes of things happening intercut with the names in the credits, which basically flash-cut set up the entire movie. Say what you want about the movie itself, the credits were unique at the time.
"Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" came out in 1991, with the whole cartoon intro of the babysitter being belligerent and various things happening to her... might not be as dark as "Se7en," but definitely counts as stylized.
But the big one is this: The entire "James Bond" franchise has some of the most stylized opening credits ever, and that started way back in the 60's. I'm not a fan of the Bond movies myself, but their opening credits are actually iconic. This is where the bulk of the stylized credits I can think of come in. How many Bond movies are there now? 25? More?
The most ancient one (non-James Bond) I can think of is "Mean Streets" in 1973, with the projector and the home movie clips giving you glimpses of the various characters and locations. Pretty interesting idea for such an old movie.
@@BubblyRainbows Yeah this was far from the first movie to have stylized opening credits like that. I can think of dozens from about 85-95 that had them, including tons of comedies.
This is an amazingly brilliant, thoughtful and completely disturbing film. You only need to see it once, it leaves the sense of a led blanket on your chest forever. "What's in the BOX???" 👀

This movie messed me up seeing it in the theater all those years ago. I was not not ready for any of it. I remember the entire place walking out in complete silence when it ended. We were all stunned.
Yeah, I think the fact that I watched several movies from his before the last being the game I was ready for some level of craziness but damn… that was intense!!!
This and Shawshank are what convinced me that Morgan Freeman was the greatest American actor of the time.

Not many people pick up on it, but aside from the suggestive imagery (and the name of the film), the early dialogue of Freeman saying "over the next 7 days" gives clues to the "Seven Deadly Sins" topic.
And to think Detective Mills wasn’t even going to be put on this case. I can only imagine the level of guilt and regret this man must’ve experienced
There is ZERO training that can prepare someone who just found out not only that there wife was murdered but also finding out she was also pregnant which now your unborn child was also killed, while her head is in a damn box a couple yards away from you. 99.999999% of people in that same situation while holding a gun, with the killer right in front of them talking about how your wife begged for hers & her child's life would of shot him too. There's no controlling your emotions in that situation because there isn't any type of training that can prepare someone's mind of finding out that there loved one was murdered and getting all the info from the actual murdered right in front of you basically mocking you about it too

@@NiaMakiReacts And no way any jury would convict him, "temporary insanity" being the keyword. He would never be allowed to be a cop again, not that he'd want to anyway. Mills is essentially 'dead'.

It’s quaint that in 1995, it was a fanciful shock to speculate that the security agencies were monitoring people’s library accounts.
Times have, uh, certainly changed.
This is a great movie with an amazing cast. But a very disturbing one at the same time. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt was great in this as well Kevin Spacey as the twisted and insane antagonist John Doe. The ending will always get me. Like I knew this movie wasn't gonna have an happy ending. But man the twist at the end was something I didn't see coming with David losing both his wife and unborn child. In which lead him to killing John Doe. But anyway I hope you have a wonderful day. Stay safe, take care and stay amazing Nia Maki.

this movie influenced so many things that you weren't even shocked by the ending. the same as fight club
But in reality, would a jury convict Mills? The "victim" was a serial killer, and had just killed his wife and baby, including cutting off his wife's head and having it delivered to him in a box. If I knew all the details and was on the jury, I might find Mills guilty of some lesser crime, but not murder of any degree, and I doubt manslaughter.

Such a brilliant movie with an ending that will haunt you long after the end credits! Also a fun fact: Fincher actually planned to show Gwyneth Paltrow's head but Brad Pitt argued it would be more effective not to reveal it, and he was right.

I didn't know that, but I absolutely agree with Pitt. It's better artistically, and showing just a flash of the wife's living face and having that make David lose it was brilliant. Also there's the fact that fake heads looks exactly like what they are: a fake head. They're never scary, they just look silly, while having the audience imagine the wife's severed head automatically makes it "look" right for each and every one of us.
It's the same principal as with the interrogation scene after the lust murder, making the audience use their own imagination is way more horrid than just straight up showing it on screen. Showing brief glimpses of the strap-on knife and Doe's 'her pretty head' line combined with Summerset's shocked reaction do all the work needed to get our mind racing.
@@szeddezs Leland Orser acts his butt off in his one scene as the Lust 'survivor', and makes it more terrifying than if we had seen it happen. He's an incredible character actor and really sells that scene with his shaking and hyperventilating.

Have you seen Fallen (1998) with Denzel Washington? It's one of my favorite movies.
I always double-check to make sure I've liked a video at the end of it when I'm finished watching. But with your abrupt ending I feel you may miss out on a quite a few LIKES as auto-play starts another video immediately.😢 Maybe consider tagging on an outro with some credits and/or suggesting that people could watch your review video as well?😊

The mind of a serial killer is, to a degree, fascinating. Most people go about their lives doing whatever society has been programming them to do, serial killers and a few others go against that but how their brain works is definitely something to be studied. That's why the fbi started their human behavioral science department.
Now, to come up with a movie like this is impressive as well.

This is one of my favorites. I agreed with summerset when he talks about bringing a child up in this world today. I wouldn't do it either, but unlike him, I wouldn't be thinking what if I did things differently. Kevin Spacey is one of my most favorite actors.

It's a tired myth that asking for a lawyer means you're guilty (even though he obviously is). It means you're smart and you don't want to get railroaded. We've already seen that these cops are corrupt enough to go outside the law to get what they want (even though we as the audience want them to do that, it's still sending that message). He's also covered in blood, so he definitely needs one.
This is a message that the media needs to stop perpetuating. It's dangerous.

I may be the only person in existence that doesn't see this ending as John Doe "winning." Mills killing him may be what he wanted, but even as someone who had her years of being intensely keen on self-deletion, dying is not exactly what I'd call a win. And let's be real, Mills is a cop. Whose wife and unborn child were murdered. And he found out while he had a gun in his hand and the murderer was right in front of him. Cops always get off with a slap on the wrist even when they've done reprehensible things. Even with all the witnesses, given the circumstances, he absolutely gets off on the grounds of temporary insanity (justifiably, in this case), _maybe_ gets transferred to a desk job, and that's about it. John Doe dies, and I very much doubt that he becomes some kind of famous icon or academic case like he thinks he will. He's a weeklong headline that someone remembers and mentions once in a blue moon years down the road. That's all. Nice win, Doe. You idiot. 🙄
