China is now ahead of US and all other Western countries in nearly every STEM field, so it's not Washington but Beijing who will benefit from neocons barring Chinese students from studying STEM in US universities. I mean Shakespeare? The Federalist Papers? Give me a break! Even native-born Americans don't study them anymore. By the way, kudos to you two for putting it out there, unlike we older Chinese-Americans who believed in keeping your head down and don't rock the boat, you guys show if we don't fight for our place in America, they'll keep throwing us under the bus. So, you two ROCK ON!

Because of geography, people in US can own a big house in a big plot of land whereas China is densely populated. This remains the only thing that attracts Chinese students to remain in US.

According to Justia, the legal website, an Asian inventor is listed on three quarters of patents filed by Qualcomm and two-thirds of the patents filed by Intel and Nvidia. Most of these Asian inventors are Chinese, just by the sheer numbers of them in hardware engineering. The head of Intel's famed Pentium program for many years was Chinese; An Wang built a billion-dollar personal computer company long before Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. People have no idea how important Chinese Americans have been to the computer and tech industry in the US.

The US wants it's cake and to eat it too. They want Chinese and other international students to come to the US and pay 2x tuition but they don't want them to get a degree that is useful in their respective country. The humanities and social studies degrees are very valuable but they are not as valuable if it comes from another country. Why go to the US for a humanities degree when a humanities degree in China is more relevant and useful?

    • @doujinflip
      @doujinflip 3 місяці тому +2

Because a American humanities degree, coming from a multicultural immigrant nation, has more global relevance than one specific to ethnostate China? Might be important to understand what more of the world thinks if Chinese brands want to develop a less substitutable and disposable reputation.

    • @WarrenKLiu

@@doujinflipI spent 16 years in the states from a New England snobby prep school to NYU Stern to Harvard. I have been an entrepreneur in 7 countries, USA, UK, Philippines, Indonesia, China, South Africa and Singapore of which 3 companies went public and the most consumer facing company has 11 million active monthly customers at its peak. I can say at least from my own experiences, an American humanities degree is absolutely worthless in 5 of those 7 countries and imo about half useful in the UK.
As for American multiculturalism, it’s useless because it’s a jack of all trades but master of none. Most African Americans, even those who can trace their roots to South Africa, would have very little cultural similarities to the modern South African. Most born and bred Asian Americans have no clue about the specific nuances of their ancestral country.
Stating China is an ethnostate is the first sign to me that you have no clue how diverse China is, just because the Chinese may look the same to you, doesn’t mean they are the same. For example, Northern Chinese is very different from Southern Chinese, the bulk of what Americans think is Chinese is very specifically South China and even more specifically 2 provinces out of the current 23 provinces, before it was classified under 36 provinces. I speak 4 dialects in those 2 Southern provinces alone and unless everyone is conversing in Mandarin, a Cantonese speaker would not understand a Teochew speaker both of whom now belong to Guangdong province. The American analogy would be a non-American thinking a New Yorker is exactly the same as a Texan because they are both American. There are major common culturally practices but they all do it in their own way regionally, the main difference here is New York and Texas both speak English, while Cantonese and Teochew are practically 2 different languages with the same writing system, kinda like English and German, both use the Alphabet. So yeah good luck selling to the Chinese with an American multiculturalism perspective thinking they are monolithic. Without even taking into account the difference within the Han majority, there are 55 other ethnic groups that are closer culturally to the Turks, Russians, Indians and Arabs than they are to Han. I have so far met only 2 Americans who actually knew Rice isn’t the staple carb in North China and that Americans think all Chinese eat rice as their staple carb is more due to not being able to tell Chinese, Koreans and Japanese apart.
Or in Indonesia where there over 1300 ethnic groups today. Good luck trying to sell them anything with an American multiculturalism perspective because there is less than 1% of those ethnic groups actually in America and most of those are of Chinese ancestry.
Or India, which is even more diverse than China and Indonesia.
As for what I think you mean when you say the world, I think you are referring to 10% of the world’s population, meaning half of EU plus USA plus Canada because far as I know the rest of the world’s population, American multiculturalism is and never was a thing and about as useless.
So as someone who had over 9000 people on payroll, anyone applying for a job with an American humanities degree won’t make it past initial HR pruning unless the applicant is applying for a position in the US or UK office during my tenure. I also instituted standardised test for all applicants across all country offices for non-entry level positions on universal knowledge and localised knowledge, the logic and math portions of those tests would require someone who passed SAT math with at least 700 out of 800 to answer to a passing grade to get to the interview phase of the application while the localised portion would ask questions related to the specific country or state or province, like what’s the difference between Texas BBQ and Carolina’s BBQ or what are the differences of Bicol Adobo to Batangas Adobo.

OP, I think the bigger question is, why would China want to import American’s gender ideology or let their next generation be indoctrinated by those ideas while paying over 100k a year to send their kids to study those subjects when there is 5K years of humanities to study which has shaped not only China but a massive portion of Asia and has influenced even western philosophy like Sun Tzu Art of War which has been a must read in American business schools.

It would be a huge loss for the American scientific community if they truly redirected STEM students from China…and elsewhere. Vast majority of the undergrad mainland China students are studying economics finance art, etc but on the grad level, on the PhD level, those science students are basically working for the universities. The PhD level students are contributing, networking, they’ve already been taught prior to coming over, and are merely guided by their advisors…most don’t attend lectures but seminars where they debate or discuss their own take.
So, all those politicians raging on Chinese STEM students don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about, and if they continue to expand the discrimination, it will hurt the scientific development of the US in huge ways. They shouldn’t forget that due to networking, even non-Chinese (foreign and American) STEM scholars are paying close attention and feel threaten too by all of the irrational nonsense which can spiral out of hand.

Native-born Americans largely avoid studying STEM because the education and training required is far too long. Assuming no gap time to work or "find yourself", a STEM student spends 4 years as an undergraduate to get the BS, 5-6 years as a graduate student to get the PhD, and anywhere from 3-6 years as a post-doc. The STEM student is 30-34 years old before considered sufficiently trained to be employable by industry or academia. None of the (low) salaries earned as a grad student or post-doc are taxable by the Social Security Administration, which significantly reduces the amount of Social Security pension the STEM student will receive upon retirement. Besides that, the very long education/training period means a STEM student loses many years of prime earning potential, employment, and business opportunities compared to those specializing in other majors. Not surprisingly, most native-born American students choose to "skip STEM".

Also your point that humanities majors exist in China (I never said there weren't MANY of them) is just plain irrelevant to this video. Those who are humanities majors in China wouldn't find exit opportunities the same way in abroad as STEM grads due to the language barrier, so the top students in those fields would be much less likely to want to study overseas.

I was a math graduate student from China back in the 1980s at an university. Let me tell you how things were. Math department is essential for the whole university, engineering, science, business ... however, math was too hard to many. At graduate level, professors must have at least 6 students in order to open a class. Even that was a huge challenge. I filled in that need often, and when I look around, other few in a class were all my chinese friends and occasionally there maybe one American student. So what will happen to the math professor when he couldn't open classes due to lack of math students registering? He'd lose his job, then the essential math department would be gone. No, Indians were not a factor back then. A professor had Russian connections (he's chancellor now) brought here many Russian mathematicians. Chinese students were the pillars. So what happened to me? I didn't stay in math, and got into Insurance financial services industry and became a multimillionaire and retired in early.

Very few Chinese national students could attend a US university and successfully major in humanities or social science, simply because their English language abilities are far too low (reading, writing, speaking, listening) for them to access the content of the lessons, or meaningfully participate in class discussions or activities that typically occur in those subjects. These students major in STEM largely because the English language requirements are low enough to allow them to at least access the lesson content. It doesn't go any deeper than that.

“National security” needs to be redefined. Also leaders and people of power needs to past a sort of intelligence test and be held accountable.

Oh, it has been actively redefined multiple time as per convenient by the west. for instance, apparently Huawei technology posed a 'National security' threat and it got banned in the US. Then the Pentagon and many of their industries couldn't properly operate without Huawei technology, and they asked for 'exception' to use Huawei again in their system. So it is a National security threat if the technology is used by civilians but it is apparently not a threat if it is used by the government and big wealthy corporations.

What stops any non Chinese students including Americans from learning STEM and then selling their knowledge to China or any other country?

Language is a big one. They'd have to communicate in ways that local law enforcement understands when intercepted. Plus the overall lack of appeal about most other major powers (especially modern China) in general.

12:25 - The US has become MORE diverse than Canada over the past 30 years. Canada is 72% white versus 2/3rds for the US, without large minority groups like Blacks and Latinos (25% together).

17:30 Being nice would be nice, but that by itself doesn't protect PRC students abroad from the "legal" pressures against them, their families back home, and compatriot classmates to compel cooperation with state-sponsored intelligence programs.
Depending on how badly Beijing wants their access to our IP, this could mean upwards of fully sponsoring their studies and postgrad work to minimize the impact of losing access to their Chinese accounts, as well as convincing them to abandon sentiments for those back on the Mainland, for as long as the ruling Party deems their speciality as a critical interest.

Imagine tomorrow if China says, gunpowder was made by us, clocks were made by us, magnets were made by us - so all this is 'our IP' 😂

The answer is No, they can’t
It’s because of Chinese STEM students that Americans can spend $100k/year doing gender studies and African American lineage studies

The Chinese international students just want to study and then settle down in America. They don't have to study STEM. They could study other courses like business and finance, medicine and engineering.

I am Korean American. How do you know 99% Chinese students are not a threat to US security. If the situation was reversed do you think China will let one American student study STEM in China. Right. This is a national security issue.
