3rd gen is iconic for a reason. I’m particularly rooting for Barioth, Deviljho and Amatsu. It’ll also be fun to see how Connors opinions overlap or differ from the community poll.
The fact that there is no "Actually Bad" monster and more than half are in the A/S tier shows how amazing this generation is. One of the only MH youtubers I can watch for 3 hours and not get bored. Also very cool when there are low tier monsters at the top, people often tend to not give them anything higher than B tier.
Dude, I love low tier monsters, I think they do so much work flushing things out and have a ton of personality to em. And if they have a decent gimmick or some kinda cool combat design they shoot up in the rankings for me.
I love how they gave Baggi the horn sweep in Rise, especially cause it's guaranteed on sleep... before he would Just kinda hipcheck ya when he got you with sleep but now he has a proper punisher that feels fitting to him. Tho sad that his eyes still don't glow in caves like in base Tri

Fun thing to add about Barroth: At least in Tri, some of his attacks are different when the body part he hits with is muddy. In particular, if his head is muddy and he does his downwards forehead-slam, it splashes up big mud balls.

Qurupeco's concept and personality are excellent, and the summon mechanic is great, but man those wing hitzones making you bounce are sooooo annoying and kinda just ruin the fight for me.
Alatreon is weird. I like him. I beat him with no augments, solo. His fight is perfectly fair. His design is good. He’s satisfying. I even like the encouragement of elements. I think what I don’t like is what Escaton Judgement is, a map wide instakill, I feel it would be way more interesting if it was different, couldn’t tell you what, but y’know. I think I prefer Fatalis in Iceborne because the difficulty is like 90% just him being a menace (haven’t quite beaten him yet but I’m getting close). In terms of pure fun though, yeah Alatreon is better. I think, for me, the joy of MH isn’t necessarily countering, it’s more about learning things through observation and experimenting, I feel as though Escaton is a bit too much of a game-y mechanic for my tastes in this franchise. Of course this is subjective and my opinion entirely, but I felt like voicing my opinion here. Escaton is something that everyone’s gonna have different thoughts about to say the least.

I like the underwater Lagiacrus fight, especially using hammer in my recent playthrough. Definitely a repetitive feeling fight though with the way he almost always turns the exact same, but that added to being able to learn his moves and really bonk his face in lol Ivory Lagiacrus does have a physical move where he basically does a 180, snapping his jaws shut to bite you where you would be standing to attacking his front leg/side. For me personally, I found this move in particular to be the most annoying one on either of them (haven’t made it to abyssal yet). It happens very fast, and with the STUPID fact that his head causes your weapon to bounce (so dumb I hate it) they come together to feel like you can’t can’t hit him anywhere safely, he doesn’t have a weak point until you knock him over. Even then, he has a short knock down so you’ll only hit his back shockers a few times before he’s back up.
GREAT WROGGI APPRECIATION YEEEAH Also Qurupeco would be absolutely spectacular in wilds, since it’s confirmed that there’s going to be an “apex” of each area, for example, that wacky rail gun monster we saw in the trailer that revealed balahara is the apex of the Sandy area and one appears during thunderstorms. Imagine if qurupeco COULD call those apexes, it would be the Deviljho effect all over again. completely agree with Gigginox being surperior Khezu. It was my second favorite after Vaal when I began really getting into monster hunter. It’s fell down a bit but Gigginox is definitely still one of my personal favorites. I’m surprised you didn’t mention how some of its egg sacks that spawn the giggis are decoys that explode into poison when you hit them! I really like how you actually have to pay attention if a sack is spitting out babies or not instead of mindlessly clearing out every sack you see. A lot of people consider the tundra theme to be barioth’s, but if I’m fully honest I’ve always seen it more as Gigginox’s theme with how ominous and spooky it is.
The things I actually dislike about Alatreon in World -You start right in front of him and you can't use farcasters. What if I want to drink potions? -You just can't use farcasters at all. If you shut him down but don't break the horn, you might as well die. -his elemental weak points are his front legs. Just his front legs. But they emphasize elements so much.
The Barioth has always been my nemesis, from that of the GU demo in 2017, to that of iceborne, which I've been trying to beat for 2 weeks to move on... and that's why it's one of my favorite monsters, I hate it in a positive way because it helps me mature as a hunter
My favorite part about Barioth is that every part break has some small impact, even in Iceborne. The broken feet/wings has him sliding and jumping a lot less, breaking his fangs will diminish his frost breath attacks significantly, cutting his tail shortens its reach and damage. And Frostfang is a great alteration.
I love how dynamic his breaks are. He was the monster that forced me to improve my gear (which sucked since I wanted to get narga’s gear first) but not my hunting style, that was ironically blackveil. But he made me take him seriously. I hate how he drags fights out which is why I love frostfang since frostfang is basically more engaging barioth. Wish frostfang was fought earlier he is a lovely fight.
My opinion on third generation's roster is probably really controversial because for my personally, I actually find it kind of polarizing. It does have some of my favorite monsters like Zinogre and Brachydios, but it also has monsters that I really don't like or get the hype behind like Lagiacrus and Barioth. I do very much like Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, it's a great game, but its roster is hit or miss for me personally. Oh wait, Great Jaggi debuted in this generation. Nevermind, third generation is peak.
I miss the oily rainbow colored armor that Brachydios has in 3U. I think he looks better in that game than he does in Iceborne, he looks so blue almost plastic in Iceborne
"Gigginox is better Khezu"- The CORRECT take. It baffles me how Khezu, outside of Japan's weird obsession with him, how he always comes back despite being (imo) one of the most lame monsters in the franchise and Gigginox just being better in every way.
I have a theory that Nibelsnarf would be wayyy less appreciated if it wasnt named like that. The fight is honestly kinda boring despite having a cool concept, the design is all over the place, i think that if he did not have a funny name people wouldnt care about him. Definitely not above Gobul and clearly a flawed monster, no way near excellent imo
I can’t believe you find joy in overcoming a challenge a video game presents you, you must be a gatekeeping elitist. Fr though the discourse around Escaton Judgement got crazy real quick.
With 1st and Second gen, I generally have 1 Monster I love, a couple I like and the rest are whatever. Time hasn't been kind to many of them. 3rd gen? 3rd gen has polarizing Monsters for me but when it hits man... So instead of just my 3rd Gen besite here's a lightning round: Great Wroggi is a good boy. Cute, cool, THE GEAR. Great Baggi too, very nice colors. Volvidon feels less mish-mash than Gypceros because while Gypceros is literally a bunch of parts (let's give it a flash, so it gets a flint crest. He needs a tail attack, so lets make the tail rubber) Volvidon all makes sense. The paralysis and stench clearly both derive from sulfur and whatever juices it gets from eating bugs so they don't feel tacked on. Paralysis in nature is a great DEFENSIVE weapon, Volvidon is an armadillo so covered in armor, therefore very defensive. Then because its an armadillo which roll into balls, it can roll! It all makes sense; and my favorite of the 3 first bears Duramboros is still possibly the most unique Brute wyvern besides maybe Brachy, even more than my beloved Glavenus. He moves so uniquely and it sucks he was the only Brute not in 5th. Hopefully the big maps in Wilds will let it come back Agnaktor is gorgeous and I'm more upset the reverse kinematic issues locked him out of 5th than I am with Lagi. Lagi doesn't fit most of 5th's maps; but both volcano maps of 5th literally have zones made for Agnaktor AND HES NOT THERE! Brachy was one of the first Monsters to throw me off because it fights unlike anything else; but once you know him it's phenomenal! Also my favorite weapon design in the whole series is Brachy's Charge Blade Zinogre is cool and fun but STYGIAN. Yeah, he's more edgy; but that's why I love it. Iceborne really perfected it. Qurupeco hasn't come back for the same reason as Gigginox, Japan complained it was a knock-off Yian Kut Ku. Where? When?? How??? Way to unique and yet easy to implement to have not returned. Barioth is my favorite of the pseudo-wyverns. Design, Fight, all of it is sick as hell. Frostfang is my favorite version but we'll get to it with 5th gen, base is still rad though and 5th gen did so much for the guy, the big pounce feels so natural for it. Lucent Narga is the best individual pseudo wyvern. So fast yet learnable and all of its moves are SO COOL. IT USES ITSELF AS A PROJECTILE! Amatsu is the peak of making a spectacle fight that is actually fun to do over and over again. Fatalis is a better fight that has spectacle; but Amatsu feels like a Lao or a Zorah while actually fun to do again and again and again Alatreon. Alatreon is my favorite of 3rd gen and a top 5 monster for a while now. This is what a Black Dragon should be, generally a generic dragon but with a design still striking enough for Monster Hunter, unlike Fatalis and Safi who are cool but still just kinda "it's a dragon" which I could get from another franchise. Giving it all elements gives it a genuine apocalyptic feeling as it coats the arena in ice summons lightning from no where and has perhaps the best most cataclysmic control of Dragon besides the literal dragon generator in Valstrax. The way it combos elements in Iceborne too, the lightning can make the ice explode into dragon, the water is filled with oil which is ignited by the fire, Sooooooo good. The fight is phenomenal, my favorite in the series. I still concur, Eschcaton could have been handled better; but you put that aside and this is an insanely hard yet fair and flashy fight with hitboxes that make Glavenus blush. And actually, don't put aside Eschcaton, because while everyone gets up in arms about its mechanics... LOOK AT IT. HIS SHEER ELEMENTAL POWER WARPS THE VERY AIR AROUND IT. Alatreon was my first true wall, my most hunted monster, my favorite fight, and 3rd gen's pinnacle in my eyes.
My first MonHun was MHTri so seeing this video pop up in my recommended put a massive smile on my face. I could listen and discuss the 3rd Gen all day. Such a great generation!
1:24:01 MY GOATS! MY GLORIOUS KINGS! God i still need to beat Agnak in Tri because i still need to do that. I feel bad about having 'gnakky-klakky as my favorite monster but fuck it, we ball
Oh btw a note for Alatreon: The elemental threshold differs per weapon. This means that the poor elemental damage output some weapons have is taken into account already
Baleful gigginox is leagues better than the regular gigginox and both khezus imo. Fight doesn’t constantly force you to stop what you’re doing to either wait for an AOE to finish or to cure yourself of poison for the 50th time in a row, he’s much more fast paced and implements the thunder and paralysis in interesting ways, like the color of the attack indicating whether it’s going to be using thunder or paralysis. Only reason I want normal gigginox back is because this guy clears
Zinogre would be a favorite of mine but dear lord his design is the thunder "Anything but a wolf" wyvern. If he was shaped like Lunagaron and was more of an actual wolf and subdued and not constantly glowing making him a pretty weird for an apex predator in his role in an ecosystem. He's just confounding.
Gonna be honest, "Zinogre doesn't look like a wolf" is a weird argument for not liking his design to me. If ya think his proprtions are odd I guess I can take that But there's so many other animals in Monster Hunter that don't look like anything naturally occurring in our world. Zinogre looks like Zinogre because he's a Zinogre.
I feel it would make more sense to be more cat like (saber tooths) but I understand why he is like he is, but damn is it odd that he is basically a walking signboard.
The respect on Barioth’s name is the fantastic kind of commentary I’ve come to anticipate you CR. I love him nearly as much as I love his brother Nargacuga. Really my opinion of my favorite generation has shifting to third generation the more I dabble back in Portable 3rd and Tri when I feel the desire to play some more old school Monster Hunter, during this down time of waiting for more news about Wilds. It’s just so impressive how they went way more out there with the introduction so many new mechanics to the classifications of Leviathans, Brute Wyverns, more Fanged Beasts, and some refined looks like the Raths getting their modern designs. Just so many fantastic new monsters and household favorites. Makes me wish I was playing the games back then on the Wii or the 3DS, but that’s just circumstance. Good stuff Volcanic, cheers.
You’re overstretching your opinion that MH is about being prepared for the monster you’re going to fight with your Uragaan defense. I understand you value the preparedness aspect and enjoy it, but I think you’re going too far. Even if Urugaan’s issue of being too tanky with his movement and bad hit zones for blade weapons is solved by using gunner weapons, that doesn’t make his issues for blade weapons justified. Why? Because people are playing the game to have fun, and if they don’t want to use a bowgun then they shouldn’t have to. It’s not that people should all switch to bowguns against Uragaan, the problem is that Uragaan is poorly balanced. It’s one thing to tell a player that they can make a weapon to exploit the monster’s weakness, slot in an armor skill to resist a blight, and craft an item to help them out. It’s completely different to tell that player to stop using the weapon(s) they enjoy playing and use this other thing, because the one you’re using is bad against this monster. Monster Hunter is a very casual fun type of game, not a hardcore dungeon raid MMO type experience. The monsters and weapons should be balanced such that every weapon is fun to use against every monster. That’s obviously a difficult task, but it’s totally fair for someone using bladed weapons to not like Uragaan because he’s not fun with the weapon they’re playing. An egregiously long comment to go with a much longer video 😂
Also to add, Bowguns take an entire different approach and skill set than Blade weapons. You need different ammos, you need to understand how those ammos work, and enough of those ammos to kill the monsters, understanding of the guns traits, new skills, not to mention now your playing a shooter. At least if you’re switching from G.Sword to C.Blade, you still keep sharpness, understanding weak spots, skills. C.Blade may be infamous for its complexity, but it’s probably easier to jump into as a Blademaster than a Blade weapon to A Gun Weapon. (Idk if this really makes sense but, 🤷)
I don't even think "it's zones are bad for blade weapons" is even true though, its stomach is quite weak to cutting and in IB you can very easily tenderize and break its jaw creating another big weak point, both of which are good element zones too. even without tenderizing, bringing a water or dragon weapon and utilizing attacks with mind's eye is fairly effective at getting that break too. everything but the unbroken jaw and back takes passable raw damage, or at the very least won't cause any bouncing with only decent sharpness... I'm not the biggest uragaan fan myself, but I'd say that its mobility (and aoes/area denial in world) is much more of a source of annoyance than anything to do with its hz values. I think a lot of people just don't like when monsters' heads aren't their weakest zone at all times.
It is why I hate fatty. It makes you want to avoid the main gimmicks of the fight if you are gunner but also mega punishes you, damage to the head is still good but not as juicy as the chest and when you have the timer and its poor moveset when hunters camp on the chest oh that chest looks so juicy
I came in with world. Saw the funny monsters thought it would be fun. It was. I've heard people talk about how World didn't give elemental weapons the propper incentive when compared to blast. Alatreon was annoying for the reason that I felt his elemental hitzones were kinda poorly communicated. The whole time everyone is talking about the horns and elemental damage. Which to me at the time made it seem like you were supposed to focus all the elemental damage on his horns. Where as actually it is the forelegs. My and my friend threw ourselves at him dozens of times before we gave up. Knowing what I know now. Becoming much more familiar with the games. Having played world for longer, playing rise. As well as getting a chance to play one of the older ones on a cousins handheld. I've learned that while my initial hatred of Alatreon won't fully go away. I can say I'm more than happy to admit I've had fun with him in the end. I do wish EJ did less chip damage while depowered.
6:47 the Jaggi armor is one of the best sets early on in 3/3U and can carry thru low rank into early high rank pretty easily with some armor spheres now and then

So instead of just my 3rd Gen besite here's a lightning round:
Great Wroggi is a good boy.
It all makes sense; and my favorite of the 3 first bears
Duramboros is still possibly the most unique Brute wyvern besides maybe Brachy, even more than my beloved Glavenus. He moves so uniquely and it sucks he was the only Brute not in 5th. Hopefully the big maps in Wilds will let it come back
Agnaktor is gorgeous and I'm more upset the reverse kinematic issues locked him out of 5th than I am with Lagi. Lagi doesn't fit most of 5th's maps; but both volcano maps of 5th literally have zones made for Agnaktor AND HES NOT THERE!
Brachy was one of the first Monsters to throw me off because it fights unlike anything else; but once you know him it's phenomenal! Also my favorite weapon design in the whole series is Brachy's Charge Blade
Zinogre is cool and fun but STYGIAN.
Fatalis is a better fight that has spectacle; but Amatsu feels like a Lao or a Zorah while actually fun to do again and again and again
Alatreon.
Glacier Agnaktor’s ice armor looks so beautiful in Tri when it melts, similar to Jade Baroth’s blues and greens but even better looking

Damn right!
My first MonHun was MHTri so seeing this video pop up in my recommended put a massive smile on my face. I could listen and discuss the 3rd Gen all day. Such a great generation!
@@FatalisEXE yeah it’s tough to beat in terms of sheer consistency of quality
@@cr-volcanic agreed. I’m a big music guy and the 3rd gen music as a whole just slaps.
1:24:01 MY GOATS! MY GLORIOUS KINGS!
God i still need to beat Agnak in Tri because i still need to do that. I feel bad about having 'gnakky-klakky as my favorite monster but fuck it, we ball
Oh btw a note for Alatreon:
The elemental threshold differs per weapon. This means that the poor elemental damage output some weapons have is taken into account already
"big DOOFY pushover!"
Best description of Arzuros ever.
Wtf is with the New Jersey mafioso accent? Wasn’t there in the 5th gen video and it’s making this video painful to get through lmfao
Gen 3 maps are also among the best imo
