Part 1: Austin Allegro V6 street sleeper project // Jonny Smith

- This video has been one that many of you have asked about. Jonny started this project of taking a hated 1970s British Austin Allegro and making it perform, handle and stop like a modern-ish hatchback back in 2007. The 1977 Allegro was found minutes where he grew up in Somerset and is a rarer 2 door model in fetching Antique Gold (one of many vile British Leyland hues).
This is episode one of a mini series, where Jonny's car goes off to the team at Midland Performance and Retro in Shropshire ( www.midlandperformance.co.uk/ ) to be finally finished as he intended. The Allegro's drivetrain has been taken from a 1993 Rover 827 Si donor car, which has a Honda-derived 2.7-litre 24v V6 and a manual 5-speed gearbox.
The aim of a sleeper is to not give the game away as to its performance and capability. As such the 'All Agro' will retain as much original 48k-from-new paint as possible. The suspension is now adjustable coilovers and brakes are Golf GTi front discs, with 14-inch steel wheels from a VW Polo (to mimic the originals in form). These areas are yet to be completed, as is the wiring (stand alone ECU from Specialist Components www.specialist-components.co.uk/ ), supercharger (Eaton M62 from a salvage Mercedes SLK Kompressor) and boot mounted cooling system.
Wanted:
-Electric cooling fans, radiator and hoses.
-Strut braces for torsional rigidity.
-Disc brakes for front and rear, plus hoses, servo and master cylinder.
-Induction air system and plumbing/mounting for supercharger
-Limited slip differential
Follow future episodes where the Allegro receives a detailed transformation from dowdy OAP chariot into a 200+bhp supercharged V6 driver's car.

Blows my mind how random this channel is. Fantastic job Jonny.
The word random has been hijacked by the youth of today and is so overused as to be meaningless.
If you mean that the content of this channel is random, (meaning it occurs without definite aim, reason, or pattern), then I'd have to disagree.
It is rather an eclectic mix however.
allegro!
Somerset lad then? Where abouts?
@@MrBenHaynes Lighten up Ben and take your meds.
My dad was given a harvest gold Allegro as a company car in 1977. He nicknamed it 'Allagro' due to the amount of time it subsequently spent in the garage being repaired. Having said that, I'm really excited to see the outcome of this project. It's a bit bonkers Jonny, but brilliant!
this sir is a true jem, the concept of a granny bashing sleeper with dodery authenticity will be comedy gold
or antique gold even.
Gem 💎
"granny bashing sleeper with dodery authenticity will be comedy gold" - Or as my favourite, Lord Blackadder said: “the colour of gold is gold. Thats why its called gold. What you have discovered if it has a name is some… Green”
8:10 Crochet-knitted seat covers on a supercharged V6 is the absolute best idea I've heard this week.
I think those wooden beaded orthopedic seat covers would be awesome.
Don't forget a nodding dog , stick on "fingers" on the boot lip and "My other car is a Porsche" sticker in the back window 😂
Crochet seat covers in the BL racing livery would deffo be a world first
Indeed, its a festival of bad taste, but all done in the best possible taste :-D
I absolutely love that you're leaving it looking like you borrowed it from your gran.
Ladies and gentlemen, this man is an evil genius. All hail.
We had a new Austin Allegro estate 1.3l in 1979 , it went everywhere, across Europe, northern Italy , Switzerland , Austria, Hungary etc etc , where ever it went it got loads of attention 😎 and most memorable thing it never went wrong 🤔
Great little car 🙃👍🇬🇧
It was 2 door with a big hatch 😎🤣
They weren't sold in Australia. Quite a few in New Zealand at one point.
Change the super badge to “surprise” looking forward to the series

@@soundseeker63 give it to @MightyCarMods and that'll be the WHP you'd get
Yes! I love it!
That being said, I am one of those weirdos that thinks the Allegro is quite good looking, especially from that rear-quarter shot.
YOU are the car pervert, not him!
Me to !
me too
This is what being British is all about folks. We can take our failed history , put some eccentric spin on it and call it success. Love it.
Awesome, I hadn't found you when you started this project but just saw you posted part 9 so searched to start from the beginning. I learned to drive in a red/orange allegro and always wanted to do a build like this, so for now I will live vicariously through you! Thank you!
Hopefully when you’re finished you can have a race with Project Binky. I can’t wait to see the updates on this.
I am looking forward to seeing that in 2030 👍
@@olik136 2030 ... ish
@@richardthresh3587 or later 😂
That was my thought as soon as I’d watched it; BL classics with performance need a race! Binky versus CPs V6 Allegro
Yea but the binky boys have race experience.
With the mods to that engine I reckon at least 400 horses.
This allegro 250/70?
Now when I were a lad, me and my mate Dave dreamed of a project like this, a "Q" car (so-named because during the war, there were things called "Q" ships that were merchant ships with hidden guns and stuff). My Austin A40 Devon was considered, we would use all BMC mechanicals, a Healey 3000 engine and gearbox, suspension etc. for example, but the car had 4 doors so that went nowhere. A Morris Minor with MGB or C running gear, was another idea, but sadly life interfered and none of these happened.... Good luck with this project, it is exactly what I would have done.
I was a bit against the idea when I first started watching but your wish to keep it BL / AR / Roverish really has won me over. Those 14" wheels are exactly what I would do given the time, money, workshop space and talent. On to Part 2 in my Sunday morning bingefest! Good work.
I once owned a brown Allegro. That fact is finally in the public domain, but yay it's now cool because of this vid! Years of shame now relieved.
Absolutely love the idea of this! The performance version of the Allegro they never built, no-one wanted and made no sense whatsoever.
You mean that racy job with the 1800 I think? Same with the marina, tho the tc was a bit cheeky till the duffs collapsed!
@@drd6416 I had a 1978 Marina 1800 HL/TC Mk2 and it was an excellent, fast and totally reliable car and nothing ever collapsed on it and I drove that car fast and hard all the time as well. I also owned a 1980 Allegro 1750 TC Equipe and that was an excellent, fast and reliable car for its day as well. It is only the thickos that watched Top Gear that believed all of the DRIVEL about BL cars etc. The dumbest people on the planet are people who watch tv and read newspapers and listen to politicians so much so that they believe that they have to pay taxes and that our government has to borrow money and has massive debt and that their are nasty terrorists all over the place trying to kill us and that viruses are actually real and we can catch them and they cause pandemics - Google Paisley Expressions and the Jesus, Hitler and Wizard of Oz post on there just now exposing how we have always been getting lied to and wait until you see what Part 2 of that is going to expose.
The build is as insane as the intro, I love it
Wow that's horribly fantastic, or possibly fantastically horrible. Either way I want to see more, if only out of morbid curiosity ;)
A true sleeper, and i love that engine, they are solid, our family had the same 2.7 rover and we towed a twin wheeled overloaded caravan at 80 to 100 miles a hour round europe on some parts faultlessly for 6 yrs and with 280,000 plus miles plus it was the gearbox repair that killed it even tho it looked like a well worn slipper, and felt like one,i cant wait for this..........
Always loved the shape of the Allegro
It's been said that they're more aerodynamic going backwards.
So you were the one!!🤣
We are two
I do love the Blank Gauge you get with Alegro & the square steering wheel with you can't feed back through you hands .. Master of British Design
I was given this very model car, in this colour, for my 18th Birthday in 1992; I ran it into the ground. It's one of my biggest regrets and I wish I still had it. So many memories just seeing it again.
When I was 17years old my friend bought a purple coloured allegro. I remember standing looking at it and saying that if he put a set of alloys on, it would still look shite.
38 years on and I'd like to own a V6 allegro sleeper.
I own a jaguar xjr saloon 4 litre supercharged, a factory built sleeper. Looking forward to your progress 👍
Can’t wait for a Smith & Sniff episode with this. Should be full of hilarity.
An Austin Allegro is like a tea cosy knitted by your Aunty Mavis.
So what you're doing is tantamount to punching a baby ... I nearly cried.
What a barkingly brilliant idea.
As a kid who grew up in the seventies, I always loved the Allegro.
Hub Nut did a lovely video on one.
Cracking! An Allegro resto mod, fantastic.
Agreed
Love how you blended in "which is emotional" in the editing at the end!
What a project - I watch with interest. We've all got Allegro stories. Here's mine. When I was at college (hair ago) one of my mates parents had one. And yes, it was Brown. They weren't car people (obviously) and they didn't bother locking it - though in those days you didn't need much to bypass locks. Anyway., one night the car went missing. The police found it on the other side of town a couple of days later. Completely unmolested. They thought someone had just used it to 'get home' after a night out. The car lasted for years and gave simple trouble free motoring. It eventually met its doom in Germany - after English confusion at a German junction resulted in an accident. Luckily no-one was hurt but it was the end of the Brown Allegro. Fond memories of happy days.
My great uncle had one of these same colour , he was so proud of it ... thumbs up for being different and using Britain's 70s finest crap for a sleeper, its perfect 👍
Jonny, we get it! We really do. Fantastic combination with the Rover/Honda V6 💪
That is deadly! Has the makings to be a very cool car to shock a few of the big boys. Love it!
YES !!! Finally someone has nice things to say about an Allegro.
Genius plan. I love it.
Everything you are doing with this car and you decisions like keeping the car looking as it does and the interior, combined with your reasons for the engine used, all is spot on, look forward to seeing the end product
Oh lord.... The one I've been waiting for!
Be prepared to go viral Mr Smith 😂👌
Absolutely love this! My first car was a series 3 Allegro, and for a few years one of my jobs at Rover Group was fitting engines into cars that they weren't supposed to be in! Can't wait to see how this progresses👍
Heh. My first car after I passed my test in 1983 was an Allegro. Blue, S reg but with the round steering wheel. Crashed it into a stone bridge after a night out, yes I was pissed, never done that again since, learned my lesson there. It was, as I recall, quite a solid car. The replacement one (same model) wasn't though, and dropped an exhaust valve half way round the Coventry ring road. Ah, the memories are flooding back 🤣
Power to your elbow. Can’t wait to see the progress. A great example of true British ‘built in the shed’ engineering to create something which is unique and imaginative. Bloody marvellous!
I never thought I'd hear myself saying these words about an Allegro - "that's cool"
I feel dirty now
You are seeing the light.
wow, I love the idea that the limit of the external pimping is to put an equipe nose.
@@TheLateBrakeShow..., and it's not just through the floor.
Can't wait to see this develop. Sleepers are so much fun!
Best laugh you could ever have in a car....
Love this project.
My first car was an Allegro. It was a serious pos. So much so I left it in Earls Court, unlocked, with keys in the ignition, and went off and joined the army.
On my first leave, 5 weeks later, it was still waiting for me with a windscreen full of tickets and a notice to remove this by the council!
I hope you have more success with this one.
Im soo happy i found ur channel. I used to watch u on tv when i was 8 or 9. I found my passion for classic cars and im now old enough to drive my very own 68’ vw bug. Nice to see u hving a passion for classic cars and doing cool projects!
I'm looking forward to seeing this finished and driven hard!
I’d definitely stop toying with the idea of an LSD and get one 😂 I love this thing!
I don't think the LSD is optional, I think it's mandatory!
Yes, would like an LSD for it.
Defo
It’s going straight ahead every corner without it
I’ve waited ages for this - I was enthralled when you first started this project and I’m so glad it’s back on track - I love how you’ve evolved the ideas - it’s exactly what I would be doing with the car too - I think we come from the same generation and our generation’s ideas on cars are so much better than most
Wow, what an absolute gem. Absolutely wonderful car and story, I love what you are doing with it, and really love the effort into keeping it Austin Rover esque. I admire the plan and cannot wait to see it progress further!
‘Look! It’s got a Square steering wheel! I would’ve loved to be in the meeting when one man must’ve said, “Let’s give it a square steering wheel”, and instead of throwing pens at him, the others must’ve gone, “Hmmm... square... interesting...” ‘ -- Jeremy Clarkson
This is about the coolest thing I've ever seen.
Also, I want one of those BL T-Shirts!
Absolutely fallen in love with this build so different in all the correct ways love to see this around Lincolnshire 🙏
I absolutely love this! Always loved the look of the Allegro, can't wait to see it finished.
Ooooh, so awful its beautiful. I remember being in a couple of Allegros and Morris minors when I was young. I can't remember which member of my family had one but I remember those cars well.
Fantastic that you’re doing this Jonny and sticking it to the BL bashers. Love the fact that you’re keeping her looking pretty much standard but with a good kick of power from that V6. Can’t wait to see how she turns out. Top man!
Inspired choice. Hats off old chap, absolutely love the concept and the choices of bits and bobs. Top darts!
Can't wait! My dad had a '73 mk1 4door in' Harvest gold' (slightly lighter shade of poo)
We had that from about '75 to '80, first thing to go was the Quartic steering wheel, my dad was 6'3" so fitted a 10" momo instead,
I learnt a lot about how cars work in that 5 years, my dad was doing running repairs monthly (if he was lucky!) and had to rig up a dodgy engine hoist from the garage rafters to pull the engine 3 times,
He says the only thing he didn't swap or repair was the Hydra-gas suspension, it was floaty but worked, so he didn't want to touch it,
The Hydra-gas system had a re-birth in the Rover Metro and even the MGF used it and it didn't die until 2002, when the designers of the TF heard of something called 'springs'
It was a shite car but we loved it, my dad later bought a Maestro, so obviously a glutton for punishment!
My auntie had one I remember us driving along and the roof lining fell down on our heads quality car lol
Absolute DRIVEL! There is no way the headlining could just fall down from these cars or most cars that used this type of headlining from back then. Sounds like the usual my auntie or my friend etc had type of bullshit. We had two Allegros in the family at the same time and they were excellent and very reliable cars and nothing ever fell off of them and I know from the way the roof lining was put on on these cars there was no way it could fall off.
@@williamwoods8022 I can't tell if you're being serious or not.
British Leyland, although the actual tech was quite impressive, certainly made some "friday afternoon" cars. The concept of hydrolastic is actually really clever, for example, but there is a reason it didn't catch on - it's not the most reliable. (I've literally just spent a year on my '92 metro GTi fiddling away with it)
On the subject of head linings, I've never owned an allegro but I can only assume by that stage they were put in in a similar fashion to Range Rovers, which, at least in New Zealand, are notorious for dropping.
I'm not saying Leyland cars suck, they don't.... well most. Some did actively try to kill you. But some of them certainly weren't put together quite as well, so saying as a blanket statement that nothing ever falls off is plain old wrong... happens with every older car, not just British. The exhaust fell off an old Swift I used to own one day, completely by itself.
The Allegro Estate was a beautiful car and so fit for purpose.
I had an Allegro Estate for 3 years. A 1.5HLS with twin carbs. It accelerated away faster than my friends 2 litre BMW... much to his annoyance!
I used to borrow my fathers yellow 1500cc (?) estate to go to college and out with friends in the evening. My classmates would take the piss, about how uncool and slow it was. When I said that it would comfortably do 90 fully loaded no one believed me until one day I was unlucky (stupid) enough to get pulled for speeding, fully loaded, late at night, doing 93mph on the M27. I bet a couple of classmates £5 each that my grandpamobile would do over 90 and I could prove it and they took the bait. I then pulled out my speeding ticket and won the bet and helped pay my £30 fine.
I salute the deep depravity of this project!
Brilliant... Matey. I'm loving seeing the flip-side of all the EU auto stuff from the 80s and how different but the same it all is. Awesome. Keep it going. Thanks.
Das geilste am Allegro war das Lenkrad 😀 … my father had one into the seventies. We had spend great holidays with it.
I can't think of a single BL car I'd have, apart from this. Brilliant, can't wait to see it finished.

I think this is going to be absolutely brilliant. Love the ethos and approach, completely agree with it. The back story, the care, the dedication and thought. Outstanding. Good luck

Great find in great spec...celebrate the ‘70’s but let’s make it even better!
GO!!!
What an epic build this is... I’m feeling all nostalgic now. My parents had a Morris Marina....a mauve/maroon Morris Marina, that forever more smelt of (us) children’s travel sick.. Ahh, memories
That looks cool AF. I would want some decent seats though, not just to stop you falling out of them, but in the event of a crash.
Yeah, the lack of headrests is scary…
Oh yes, surely it will need some decent supportive seats seeing as Jonny plans on tracking it! You would slide clean off those spongy flat things in there at present!
