Part 2: Austin Allegro V6 supercharged sleeper project

  • Part 2 of Jonny's Vlog converting the most hated British car (1970s British Austin Allegro) and making it perform, handle and stop like a hot-ish hatchback. The 1977 Allegro's drivetrain has been taken from a 1993 Rover 827 Si donor car, which has a Honda-derived 2.7-litre 24v V6 and a manual 5-speed gearbox.
In this episode the team at Midland Performance & Retro transform the fetching Antiques Gold original paintwork using nothing but Farecla cutting/polishing products and Mirka abrasive pads. The interior is stripped out to reveal what is a pleasantly solid, unmolested Agro bodyshell.
British companies Forge Motorsport step in to support the cooling side of the project, while another British engineering outfit - Wortec - supply the highest spec braking system for a car on 15-inch wheels. Talking of 15s, the diameter has increased in order to cope with the enlarged brakes, and as such Jonny thinks he's found the perfect stealth steel wheel.

The moment I heard Shropshire I was reminded of the lads from Bad Obsession Motorsport. Then I realised that this is also a British Leyland car getting fitted with a japanese engine with forced induction. After that you started talking about moving the fuel tank and fabricating custom heat exchangers, you showed off the custom strut towers and the modified steel wheels and I couldn't help but notice the similarities.
I hope there's a chance of a video showcase/collaboration if you're still active on UA-cam by the time Project Binky is finally done (bit of a tongue in cheek reference).

Dodgy Davo- Glad we all have our own tastes and the Allegro was a far better shape than the Mk2 Escort that was shaped like a brick and was as agricultural as a tractor with its ancient leaf springs etc. Yes the colours and those wheel trims let the looks of the Allegros down but with far better colours and alloy wheel such as the 1980 1750 TC Equipe I owned it was a very nice looking car - so much so I always came back to my parked car with people looking at it and in it and you didn't get that with any other ordinary car back then. The Mk3 Allegro was a nice looking car as well with better colours and even the plastic wheel trims really lifted the looks of the cars. Wheels really make a big difference to any car.

They never had a terrible reputation back then - it was only when the crap Top Gear started slagging them off and Marinas that the dumb masses as usual started to spout the same drivel. Plenty of people like me with Allegros back then drove them quite happily and RELIABLY - mine was a 1980 Allegro 1750 LE Equipe that always drew people looking into and at it all the time when it was parked and not many people can say that with an ordinary car like that. Up till then it was the colours and those wheel hubs that let the looks of the Allegro down. The Mk3's were far better in the looks department with the Equipe being the best looking with its alloy wheels.

The note about your foot mats sadly perishing in situe brought back some terrible memories of the mesh type inner liner of my gym shorts simply degrading, luckily this wasn't as severe as I'd first anticipated and the functionality of said shorts remains to this day technically as efficient as ever even without for mentioned inner linner fully present. Food for thought I'm sure especially for those with elderly relatives perhaps visiting.

I have always liked Allegros as we had two in the family at the same time - my brothers then mothers 1978 Allegro 1500 LE and my 1980 Allegro 1750 TC Equipe and both were excellent and very reliable cars. We always looked after and serviced our own cars unlike most people back then who didnt look after their cars or they did and the garages ripped them off by saying their cars needed things done to them that they didn't or didnt do what they said they had done and then the cars would get the blame when they broke down or things went wrong - still lots of this going on today with cheap owners and dodgy garages etc. That Equipe was an excellent car and I would still have it today if it wasnt written off in an accident. There are still between 6 and 10 Equipes surviving that are known about some in need of restoration and I would gladly love to own one of the mint ones.

Allegros were actually very well rustproofed for the time - one of the first ordinary cars to be waked injected into the cavities etc and like most cars from back then if you didnt clean out under the wheel arches etc then deal with any rust that may be starting then they would end up with rust spreading all over the place. I used to do that with my Marina, Allegro Equipe and Mini etc back then and that is why mine weer always in excellent condition while most peoples cars back then were rotting away.

300mm discs under 15" rims is some going, just need to be careful with offset etc as that will be tight. Looks like it lived a sheltered enough life & was taken out of circulation before any really nasty grot got hold of it. With the rear mount rad you need to think carefully about the air extraction path as you are going to be reliant on not having a pocket of turbulent air right behind the car which would kill any flow through the rad, fans wouldn't really help much. Admittedly it would only be a problem at higher speeds but it warrants consideration. Those sleeved driveshafts may need looking at too as they tend to fail eventually through fatigue. Really like the project, very oddball choice of engine for many reasons but I get the Rover link (a 3.0 Ford Duratec V6 from an ST220 is a 60 deg Vee & therefore more compact plus more powerful & comes with a 6 speed box and is a lot more modern, chain driven etc but I get that it is not what you want to go for). Also reckon that a nice little single turbo setup would be better than the supercharger but again I understand that you want the immediate response from a PD blower....it is addictive! What are you planning on doing for rear suspension as you've lost the Hydralastic from the front? Is it a coil over conversion (I assume it is a trailing arm setup like a classic Mini?)

It is only the dumb thickos that believe the crap from the JOURNALISTS from Top Gear that "hate" Allegros - and Marinas - and the people like myself that owned these cars and looked after and serviced them myself knew that they were excellent reliable cars. We had two in the family at the same time - my brothers then mothers 1978 Allegro 1500 LE and my 1980 Allegro 1750 TC Equipe and they were both excellent and very reliable cars and the Equipe was a very quick car in its day. Too many people back then didn't look after their cars or used cheap parts in them when they did or the garages did or the garages etc claimed they did work on the cars that they didn't do or that the car needed work done that it didn't and then the car/manufacturer would get the blame hence why I and many other people worked on our own cars.

I want to chime in on the choice of the rust protection: Bedliner material is not the best choice. Its prone to micro-abrasions (from stone chipping at it), which then allow water & salt to seep in under the bedliner material and rust the metal underneath it, all while keeping the appearance of a pristine surface. If I may suggest, use Cosmoline (yes, it does come in black) or Woolwax (Fluid Film), or what I did, both (Cosmoline first, than Fluid Film). No, Im not endorsed by either of those companies. My take on application and philosophy behind it: ua-cam.com/video/Z5lLPUIA95g/v-deo.html

"it was never a spares or repair car"... It's an all-aggro, it was always a repair car... every other weekend!
My dad had one, L reg, 1.3 L, harvest gold like yours (I always thought it should be called 'mustard turd') it was the car that I learnt about car mechanics on,
My dad was fixing it every other weekend, had the engine out about 4 or 5 times, it was an absolute mare, everything failed apart from the hydro-elastic suspension, it was the only good thing about the car,
Also, it could climb icy hills better than most things, just to give the old girl some credit,

We had two in the family at the same time - my brother then mothers 1978 Allegro 1500 LE and my 1980 Allegro 1750 TC Equipe and they were both excellent and very reliable cars. I also bought a 1980 Mk3 1.3L from one of our customers of the garage I worked in back then in the 1990's to use to go to university because we had been servicing and looking after that car from when it was nearly new and bought it because I knew how reliable that car was. All of the Allegros we looked after and the Marinas as well were very reliable cars. Total bullshit to say that these cars were unreliable and always had things wrong with them. Maybe your dad bought someone else's unlooked after heap of crap - my uncle was like that and then always blamed the car. At least you were fixing your cars but if everything kept failing then maybe you were not doing the fixes right in the first place or were using cheap parts in your car. We always looked after and serviced our own cars in my family and never used cheap parts and our Allegros were very reliable and excellent cars. and plenty of people still enjoying their Allegros reliably today and that is why they keep them.

@@williamwoods8022 I'm glad that you and your family had a better experience with the BL range, perhaps you got a couple of good ones,
I have heard of people having reasonably trouble free motoring with them but the reputation is there for a reason... Many didn't
Perhaps the old saying 'it must have been built on a Monday morning or Friday afternoon' has some truth in it?
The Maestro was better, but still dogged with minor issues that were down to poor design and cost cutting in manufacturing, or poor installation at the factory, very slap dash rust proofing and under-sealing,
I believe the hydra-elastic suspension (or whatever it was called?) was carried over to the Maestro, again no issues, so they did at least get some things very right,
I think it's very unfair to call my comment 'total bullshit' that was your experience and this is ours, I'm glad you had a better one,
But the fact that some people slate BL cars for a good reason is un-escapable
