- 16-months in the making, Part 4 of the Allegro Sleeper is here. And some pretty big decisions have been made in that time.
As some of you may have seen on socials, we turned over a bit of a new leaf with the ever-stalling Austin Allegro sleeper project. Note we didn't use to the term 'V6 sleeper', as the difficult choice has now been made to not use the C27A Rover 827 (Honda) motor.
There was always a question mark about future-proofing the build and the decisions Jonny explains in this latest update are all about this exact thing.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.

Don't worry about the people giving you grief for changing plans on the drivetrain. The new choice is way more doable and will get the project moving forward so that it will actually hit the road sooner rather than later (or never).
My family and I are livid about it.
Not really.
They don't have to live with the car when it's built either.
Would be nice(r) back in the car from whence it came (imo). A nice half-dead 827
As for being a traitor.... to who exactly? The V6 was a Honda engine too
You lot might wanna go have a word with BL first 🤣
Alternatively, you can always build your own if feeling hard done by (Spoiler: They won't)
Agreed. It's your car so it's your choice, ffs!
Life and plans change, adapt and evolve. If you get upset with what someone else is doing with a car you'll maybe see once or twice and never drive you need to sit down and have a ruddy good word with yourself.
It should have been engine choice number 1 can't wait to see this hitting V-tec
Really excited to see this done.but please keep the outside looking original.
Been having a blast working on the Agro, thanks again for the opportunity. I can’t wait to see it finished!😃😃
Subbed to you too. That Princess is gonna be amazing. Absolute proof that there isn't any car that doesn't look significantly better on Proxes lol.
hi. with so much after market options is there not a shallow sump that can replace the oem one?
I know a guy with a supercharged type r civic (bread van shape, don’t know what they’re called model wise). It’s biblically fast and amazingly reliable. He’s had it glued to the back of a few super cars on track days without any worries. Incredible engines.
@@mopedmarathon EP3 I think the bread van shape was
@@wattsy7929 it doesn’t really need it though, the sumps not any lower than the A-series would have been with the gearbox in it! I could try and talk Jonny into a dry sump though!👀
Absolutely the right plan when it comes to the drivetrain, the V6 was a nice idea - but the K20 is going to be a lot of fun!
“Perfect is the enemy of good” feels like a pertinent quote regarding the engine decision. I look forward to all the future vids on this 👍🏼
Thank you chap. ✊🏽
What a pair they will be, the Allegro and the Princess-type! They must be put on display together, at some future event, that's for sure!
Your mate Adam speaks very clearly and seems to know what he's on about.
The car and project appear in very safe hands!
Good luck, guys!
No apologies needed! Love the intro!
No one upset here mate ...just glad to see this coming along
I love this project, its like the Austin allgero version of Broject binky lol!👍👍
The K20 is a great engine design. It has won some serious industry prizes for best engine of it's class.
I think it's not only the obvious choice but also a great choice.
That said these engines DO have their technical problems: valve spring retaining washers and
oil pump spring to mind.
If you decide to go forced induction consider a centrifical supercharger. Nice and compact. And it will create the feeling of a much bigger engine.
About time.!. Life's going back to the 70's anyway so an allegro fits in nicely.
It’s totally the correct way to go, there’s so much tuning parts available off the shelf. This will make the car much more reliable and usable.
Yay, Allegro content. :)
The engine change makes a lot of sense. Do you have a prospective alternative home for your V6?
Now it's got VTEC, it should be renamed the AllegYo! :)
Yes!!! This!
Fantastic episode and great to see other updates on the Fabco channel. 👍 Also, that 🤴 is incredible.
Many thanks chap!
Thanks Chris!😎
Oh wow I had the exact same dysentery brown Allegro in the 80's, what a dream!
I do like all the old Austin car stuff, always room for more of it on UA-cam.
Sounds like a good plan, as much as i like a nice v6 you have to use what works the best and a K20 is a fantastic engine too.
Great choice of engine Jonny 👍😎 , previously owned an Fn2 and tuned it, and my god it was a weapon, revved to the moon, and sounded amazing, and on top of that ! It would do it all day long without any issues , just what you want mate 👍. Looking forward to seeing this project to completion . Awesome content as always 😎
That's all the endorsement I need - many thanks for following.
Been waiting yonks for this 👍👍👍
Seriously good intro music, and yes mate change is good 🤛🏿
Absolutely love the Allegro project, the ultimate sleeper!
Love the Allegro build and particularly the new seat covers. We had the same material on the buses I drove in London in the 80s/90s.
As goes ditching the V6 I reckon you've made the right choice. Looking forward to seeing more.
Awesome engine choice, and the princess, best projects ever!
aye about time, been missing my grannie bashing sleeper action.....
An idea to lift the height of the sump a little would be to fit a dry sump system. Also that would provide better protection to the engine if you were going to use it for traaaaaaack worrrkkk...
Track work!🥸
If you do a turbo K20 you must must must consider forged rods depending on the power you want. The rods ae the weak point. If you are going to track it as you have mentioned you also need a baffled or ideally dry sump as they suffer from oil starvation in the corners. Although baffled will probably be fine. But K20's are awesome engines.
Dry sump would seem to be the way to go as it will also restore some ground clearance
Naturally aspirated (Honda) K20 have plenty of power IMO, you can get them to 240-250bhp fairly easily with a largely stock block & heads (maybe drop-in cams) which is surely plenty for any (sane)
Love this Jonny this is gonna be the best allegro on the road once it’s done looking forward to seing this finished brings bk child good memories 👍🏽👍🏽well done guys love it
It's always good to have someone onboard who knows what they're doing.
Happy to see another installment of the Allegro build. If I had my druthers, at least 50% of Late Brake Show episodes would be dedicated to Jonny's project cars. Where's that lowrider at?!
This project has taken such a great leap forward in terms of planning and spec. It will be a more entertaining engine. While we have things pretty free and easy compared to many other European countries on the modifying cars side of things, it's such a shame that modifying a monocoque shell requires a Q plate due to being radically altered or a IVA test to be passed before using legally on the road. I'm not sure I'd bother with the test and just hope for the best 😁
No worries Johny, the folks giving you grief about the changes are missing the meaning of the important word: Sleeper! A fascinating video on the engineering problems and the solutions and thanks Lads I'm off to look at the Princess-S type..........................
What an intro!
This is going to be awesome!!!! I think you’ve done the right thing ditching the v6
Finally the Allegro is back!
Love this build I only just found it even though I’ve seen loads of your barn find Vlogs. I do like an Allegro and Sleeper cars so totally agree with what you have done here, even though I drive a factory Moggy minor
It makes all the work I did on my Allegro Estate 1300 Super look tame by comparison. I kept the orginal engine, but I really worked on it, and it went like shit off a shovel. That was more of a Q-car though because it looked totally standard.
I remember driving a 1.5 1979 Allegro (HLE I think) and the engine was huge and you could clearly see the sump hanging out 😂
I really can’t wait to see this thing on the roads. Such a ‘Jonny idea’ of a car. I just love it.
The PrincesS-type is so marvelously perverse, I have no words.
Thanks 🤩😅
Cool to see an update on this great project. Dont think you will get much backlash because of the engine choice, certainl not from me. :) About that low ass sump, may I suggest a dry sump conversion? There are some kits available for K20s afaik and you seem to have enough room elsewhere in the engine bay or the boot for a reservoir.
The 827's Honda V6 was a nice idea for its uniqueness and noise, but I think the buzzy, high-revving K20 will suit the 850kg AllegRo hot hatch much better. This is going to be an absolute hoot!
Looking forward to seeing more progress.
So... how's the electric Figaro coming along?! :)
Plus now you can put the V6 in an Austin Maxi....😄
This is easily one of my favourite shows now, thanks man
Think you made the right choice, loving the channel 👍
This is build is awesome, cant fault you going down the Type R route Jonny it will look so much neater and as you said the aftermarket for those engines is huge.. love that its going to be stealth and a brown cam cover with the leyland badge will look epic.. keep it up but come on hows the Beetle??
Love this! What about a dry sump motor?
I've only found this today but this is fantastic!!!!
So pleased this build is back on! Drag Cartel Dry Sump has a shallower sump than stock, but not cheap...;)
Definitely no need to apologise, will be worth all the hassle in the end I'm sure.
Shame to lose the V6 (mainly just because 6 cylinders sound great), but seems like it was the right call to get a useable and decent car out the end of the process. TBH sounds like a bit of a no brainer
You're a no brainer
An Allegro sleeper? lol, love it.
Lovely to see some progress. There is an obvious connection between BL/Rover/Honda so I don't have a problem with the engine. Looking forward to the updates and seeing the Princess as well. A friend's dad used to have a Princess so I love them. It's also great to see all this British engineering. There are so many small workshops doing this sort of work.
Good call on the K20! I'd want to get that engine sat higher if possible, and think of changing that sump, its really low.
Though I prefer the V6, the honda K20 is a fine engine too
The Allegro is going to be true sleeper ....looking forward to seeing more of this project 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Fantastic stuff! Love the princess too
As long as we're re-engineering this project, how about using all Civic running gear? Of course, that may be "a bridge too far" in that you've already invested whatever the cost is of the current suspension parts. #AllegRoSleeper
According to the first numbers I found, the Civic is a whole five inches wider than the Allegro, so it would be tricky to fit it in there, without massive wheel arches which would ruin the sleeper look.
I am really enjoying this Johnny. If the primary reason for building the car is for you to enjoy then it is irrelevant what other people think. Long term modified cars evolve, during the build and after hitting the road - that is part of the joy of them. Worry less about what other people think and just do what feels right.
Just brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.
Not bothered about power unit as long as parts are future proof that’s a no brainer, it’s going to be a beast can’t wait 👍👍👍👍👍
Excellent update. Look forward to the rest! This is the best kind of content when we get to follow progress on a project car. Don't trouble yourself with what other people think about the engine. Do what makes you happy :)
Flippin brilliant, what a project.
Good choice Jonny.
Got my EP3 Type R in 2003, whilst the market was young in the UK for the K20, but there was already a wealth of parts and tuning experience with the K20A2 in the USA on the Acura RSX Type- S (the USDM equivalent of the DC5 Integra Type R)
What a pair, a PrinceS-type and an AlleGRRo, the way they should have been!
So pleased to see what’s happened ending with the Allegro. Bloody love this project.
Really excited to see more in-depth videos on the build. Thank you for sharing the journey!
I love the change in the powertrain
The k20 is a hell of an engine especially when they are turbo
Absolutely incredible. And when I saw the Princess it must have coincided with getting something in my eye because I felt a tear (My Dad drove my Grandad's Princess after he died and I had many happy memories colouring and playing in the back seat of that car)
👍🏻
Perfect mach for the Allegro -- the "con brio" was a nice idea but I like this "con fuoco" direction even more. K20 swaps are popular for a reason, no harm in that!
Hay Johnny, when the Allegro was launch, Leyland had just started deals with Honda to produce what was to be Triumphs replacement Luxury car... ( that turned out to be the Honda Legend & Triumph was gone forever ). But I digress !
The Civic Type R plant IS STILL HISTORICALLY CORRECT & British Leyland OCD types can just go back to the "good old days" & have a strike about it ! 😂
Good move & you get to inspire someone out there to do a 400 Bhp Maxi one day 😮.
That Princess is awesome!
Brilliant can’t wait for the next episode in this
Great idea Johny….. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
When that pair is finished PLEASE bring them up to Ashby Foleville on a Tuesday, they will be a SHOW STOPPING duo!!!!
Near Loughborough/Leicester, hundreds of vintage cars and bikes 🚲 👌
Great pub, classics on the cricket 🏏 pitch,
Pre-War in pub carpark
Bikes on the lane way 👌 😎
Vintage 🚌 🚏 runs passengers till sunsets (his headlamps are ACTUAL candles🕯 🕯 🕯) 🚌
Have fun, do what you want and ignore the trolls. I was actually excited today when I saw the word Allegro appear on my phone notifications 😁
As soon as you mentioned a different engine, first thing I thought was K20!
Great choice! I love my EP3 weekend Mobile 👍
This is a very promising union, I've been enjoying FabCo's updates immensely and was eager to see what was happening with the Allegro. New direction has not disappointed, you've got a fresh direction and a lovely V6 to put in something.
Sounds really positive and this guys sounds convincing
Awesome video, great progress and still the sleeper ethos. Can't wait!
Love this project, looking forward to seeing the progress.
Lovely stuff. Well done Johnny!
What a car the Princess will be!
Just in from work and... OMFG!!! It!!!!! Is finally here, an update on the Allegro. So looking forward to this Jonny..... Keep these coming buddy.
Changes? That’s life… I’m just pleased to see that we’re going to get updates!! I can’t wait to see this up and running - my boss lent me one of these to go on holiday in… before I had a license!! Them was the days 😀
I'm all for this.
You made the right decision
Thank you Simon. Stand by for part 5 in 2 days....
Love it Jonny. My 1st car in 1988 was a 1979 Aleggro 1300 Super, in orange. Was a brill little car, but mostly made from chicken wire and filler. It used to develop a lean every now and again as the Hydrolastic suspension sagged. The seats were amazingly comfortable though. Can't wait to see this finished.
Yay for the return of Allegro content. :-)
Looking forward to more.
Love the intro, Jonny! Oooooh! New front rails too 🤩🤩🤩 Any update is a good thing. Cheers. Leigh. PS: you're going to need those t-shirts soon!!! PPS: Adam does some stellar fab work.
Brilliant choice of engine love it .
Well done jonny 👏
Great video..
Great update, by the looks of it you have found the right company to move the project forward.
Lots of projects can stall due to the customer have ideas that are not A: “ achievable” and B: the company does not have the skill or the experience to advise the customer but takes the job on anyway and then drags the job out until all is not happy.
It looks like Fabco has a good handle and experience to forward think of issues.
Cannot wait to see the next instalment
Nice to see a couple of BL Gems live on! 👌👍
It is YOUR car, so whatever you do, sharing the journey with us will be highly entertaining and we will love every episode. So thank you for giving us something to look forward to - each week…???🤣😉
Well done for cracking on and makes sense on the engine. Very easy for armchair viewers like me to opine on something they don't have to live with.
Makes total sense! Nice one. I had a brown and a light Blue one off my grandad and my mum!! I wanted his Hiliman imp though.
Looking forward to seeing the allegro when it's done and also the Princess-type too!
Having owned an early 3.0 manual s type that thing will be great fun and will have less rust too!
I love Your allegro n that princess is gonna be an animal I've always been into the marinas and would love another pickup I had 1 25yrs ago but due 2children coming along I had 2 sell it but would love another coupe or just any marinas my dad had estates which would be awesome turned into an estate van with an st170 lump poss chucked in it like ur agro so no-one knew until the traffic lights pull away have subscribed 2 fab con so I see both the princess and allegro being built etc wicked cars both of them can't wait 2 see them both finished 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I've been following the pincesS build and he is such a massive talent, I have no doubt your car will be 100% better than you ever expected, looking forward to the yearly updates!
There has been a lot on your plate I would imagine - no doubt the super allegro is still with us! I always thought that a V6 lump was cumbersome in the bay of an ol allegro - these K20 honda motors are bulletproof, a very good choice indeed!
Great episode! That was a lot of passion about two usually unfancied cars.
Brilliant. Love the new ideas.
K20 what a great choice. I have an Integra Type R love it! Nice work
