  • Welcome to Part 3 of Jonny's Austin Allegro V6 supercharged sleeper project, where he is converting the most hated British car and making it perform, handle and stop like a hot-ish hatchback. The 1977 Antique Gold Austin Allegro's drivetrain has been taken from a 1993 Rover 827 Si donor car, which has a Honda-derived C27A 2.7-litre 24v V6 and a manual 5-speed gearbox.

    In this episode:
-Midland Performance & Retro drill out the spot welds to remove the front wings.
-The engine and gearbox are taken out, ready to finish engine bay and strut tower fab
-A whole lot of 3d laser scanning happens to the front suspension parts.
-3d printed caliper brackets are tried for size on the Wortec brake kit.
    - Jonny opens the gearbox to fit a Quaife (automatic torque biasing) diff.
-Jonny starts stripping the C27A Honda V6 of its manifolds and cam covers.
-Midland Performance & Retro cut out the boot area for rear cooling & make a firewall.
-New adjustable GAZ Gold coilover dampers with adjustable top mounts.
-Some ebay parts for the cooling and front suspension system
-Using a pub bar cider sign as a third braking light. Yes, Jonny is being weird.

I had no idea what an Allegro was before this. I am probably too young, and there are not so many older cars on the roads here in Northern Ireland, presumably due to a combination of rust/rot and the export of good examples back to England.

It brings back a lot of memories for me! My 1st car was a white Austin Allegro 1300, 'N' plate, 4 door. It lasted about 18 months until I skidded into the back of another car that had unexpectedly braked for a pedestrial crossing just off a roundabout! Most stupid place to put a crossing. I was keeping an eye on vehicles from my right as I entered the island and didn't see the car infront stop. It was raining and my wheels locked up and skidded into the back of the car! A policeman even saw it happen and that was unfortunate and didn't do anything else! The whole frontend of was crushed and it was un-economic to repair. :-(
I still think it wasn't half bad as far as cars of the times go.
Anyway I'm looking forward to seeing how your project goes on.
    Thanks for the memories!

    Loving the build .
My dad had 3 allegros when we were kids, (we must of been poor)
We made him drop us off around the corner from school because we were so embarrassed 🙈 of the cars , 1 orange, 1 blue & a bloody brown estate, which was the most embarrassing of all .
The funny thing is I’m in my 40s now and keep looking for one every so often for Dad , nostalgia I suppose,

    • @williamwoods8022

We ad two Allegros in the family at the same time - my brothers then mothers Allegro 1500 LE and my 1980 Allegro 1750 TC Equipe which were both very reliable and excellent cars and we were never embarrassed to be driving or seen in them - as a matter of fact every time I left the Equipe parked anywhere I always came back to people looking in it and at who asked me questions about that car and you would never have had that happen with any other ordinary car back then or even now. Allegros were just another car on the road back then that no one would have batted an eyelid at and it was only later with Top Gear spouting their drivel about Allegros and Marinas etc that the dummies who watched that started to spout the same drivel because most people are dumb sheep - that is why the religions call their followers their flock because they can spout any old crap and the dumb sheep will believe them.

Hi, I had a 1750 sport allegro new in 1974, in aconitine which was purple, loved the car, swapped the quartic steering wheel for a 10 inch round leather bound steering wheel which meant I couldn’t park or do a 3 point turn without rupturing my arm muscles haha, but that that’s what you did in the 70’s, always loved the look but hated the gearbox ( Maxi sh1t shift), oh and the paint was rusty on the window trim from new, respirated twice. Happy Days, good luck with this conversion, it’s going to be great

The power of 3D scanning & 3D printing for rapid prototyping on one off engineering projects is incredible. Combine that with CNC tech & you can literally have infinitely repeatable ‘bespoke one off’ parts that should mitigate one of the biggest risks you accept if you want to buy somebody else’s ‘one off project’. We’re not all Alan Millyard, but we can all email a file to a toolmaker & say ‘please make me one of those in this material, I broke the original’.
