Great stuff!! Thank you both
So appealing to what I am going through now!
I was pretty bad in my addiction to the point I needed detox. Naltrexone daily is a huge help in my recovery journey along with AA.
First time I took NAL, I mistook the feelings caused by the alcohol as side effects of the NAL. That's how different the feeling is. So thankful that I do not seem to have significant side effects from Naltrexone.
I don’t know why some professionals are so quick to dismiss side effects after taking. It’s wildly reported and just a fact. Some people have side effects. In my case I get nauseous every time.
If I cut down consuming and skip many days, I think I will take Nal anyway, just to keep it in my system. I say that because when I have stopped taking it for a while, then even take a half 75mg, I get violently nauseous and throw up like crazy. That sucks but well worth this miracle cure.
I respect this doctor’s opinion but as others have suggested, how in the world could this be “new to him”? I love Naltrexone and I’m thankful for it; however, the side effects are fairly strong. Fatigue, malaise, desire to throw up, etc. is it worth it to quit drinking? Absolutely. Nonetheless, I’m surprised at his sort of…dismissal of those side effects.
Fully agree. Now, to be fair, those of us who get violently nauseous when starting it (even after a break), may be the more rare cases. So, if I end up having long periods of abstinence, although it will not be part of re-training my brain, I will take a "maintenance" dose of Nal to prevent the very unpleasant effects of starting up the drug again.
Just started Naltrexone......day 2....had one drink tonight ..the wine didnt taste as good and had no effect on me .
.no high....no desire to have a second drink.......felt in control....like it
I took Nal and I felt sick for hours. I wasn’t even drinking. I still have my prescription and I’m debating if this is right for me.
Did your doctor have you start at a lower dose and have it with food and water? So sorry you had to go through this.
If I do the 3 or 4 days detox with the appropriate meds, do I take Naltrexone during/at the same time? Or do I start after.?
Only take the Nal after the detox because the whole TSM protocol is to take Nal 1 hr. prior to drinking. There is no other benefit to taking Nal than combining it with drinking to extinguish the reward mechanism that has been trained into you - it's literally Pavlov's dog. Even an addictions MD I worked with was under the mistaken impression Nal is an anti craving med - it is not. It is only useful to block the rewards of endorphins (opioid receptors) that train your brain to consume.
Now, even many/most family docs think Nal is useful as an anti-craving med, so it's easy to get prescribed - or they will Google and think it makes sense for cravings. No need to tell them about TSM. You can, if you like, but that might over complicate things and they may think you have bought into snake oil. I say, don't tell them.
