  • Love them or loathe them, the SUV is a dominant force in the new car market. Yet the title "Sports" Utility Vehicle has always puzzled Bryan. How can something so big, so heavy and so unwieldy ever be 'sporty'? And why have one that has pretensions of being a coupe? After all, aren't they supposed to be practical? Yet Ford and Volvo want to show us that it is possible to have our cake and eat it with their new, all-electric offerings - the C40 Recharge Twin and the Mustang Mach E GT. These two combined produces almost 900bhp, and will sprint you, your family and the dog to 62 mph from rest in under 5 seconds. Very sporty indeed.
But which one does it best? Time to find out.......
AutoEV - all electric, all independent.

Great Video. I enjoy hearing a Scots voice explaining stuff. Regarding the threat of the EV6 ... we thought it looked great and were really thinking of jumping on that opportunity. But the Kia EV6 seats are short and the head rests push your head forward and that's you're primary interface with the car and will decide whether long journeys are fine or miserable. The interior quality is a step down on the volvo. The control of everything using voice commands on the volvo is also absolutely fantastic .... next level stuff. You just don't bother fiddling with controls on the screen. Sure, the Kia goes further and charges faster. But we've off street parking and charging so we have the luxury of only ever having to use fast charge networks 2 or 3 times a year. Having driven electric 2 years now we know that that with our lifestyle and location for 99% of the time those charging speeds and ranges are unimportant. And then there's those seats. We tested both Kia EV6 and the volvo C40 on the same day and ordered the volvo 3 days later. (Kia dealer's partex price was also a poor effort but we'd made up our minds already).

Watching live. This is a great review. You’re nailing it. I own a C40 Recharge and have driven both the Ford and Volvo extensively and agree with you

Thank you again for the excellent, thoughtful content. I had no idea the Mach-E seats could not tilt, and frankly I'm shocked at the omission at this market level and price point.
I would suggest taking some time in the future to evaluate the voice command capabilities and ease-of-use on these vehicles. I own an XC40 Recharge (thanks in part to watching your reviews), and I find the voice commands alleviate many of the concerns of navigating the touchscreen menu. The voice interface for the climate system in particular is excellent, and I frequently rely on it. I can do everything from turning the seat heaters on and off (and setting them to a specific level) to toggling the air recirculation using only vice commands. Literally everything on that climate control screen can be done without touching anything at all. I would be curious to hear how the voice command implementations of other EVs compare.
And if I may, a slight correction at 40:00 regarding "Steering Assist" in the Volvo menu: this toggles the self-steering feature. "Pilot Assist" refers to the adaptive cruise control system. Toggling Steering Assist off will give you a simple adaptive cruise control when you use the cruise control buttons on the steering wheel Toggling Steering Assist on will add automatic steering when cruise control is activated.

I just bought the C40 Recharge Ultimate this week. It's my first EV purchase. I narrowed my choice down to the C40 and Mustang Mach E GT. I'm glad I opted for the Volvo. I felt it was better overall. I drove both extensively. The Volvo just feels better, drives better and felt more refined.

Great review! I ordered a C40 a few weeks ago and am eagerly awaiting its arrival....some day.
One thing to add... in my XC40, all of your climate controls can be accessed via voice command. I believe it is the same with the C40.

Apple Carplay, which has been promised for some time, was included in Version 2.2 of the Google Automotive (over-the-air) update released in July, 2022.

To be fair, I have never driven an Audi A2 and rarely use the rear wiper on any of my cars.
I do remember the Ford Anglia with the raked back rear window, and the Classic also.
But given a choice, I would want one.

One correction, the Volvo doesn't have Android Auto. The infotainment system runs on Android Automotive OS, but this is different from Android Auto and doesn't provide for screen mirroring like Android Auto or Apple CarPlay would.

Clearly the Volvo is the safest car as watching you keep your eyes on the road and watching out for errant kids its better than your constant pfaffing with the center display of the Mustang

@@outfoxthefox, What has that insult got to do with anything? The A2 is designed such that the rear screen is kept clear by the air flowing over the roof. If you have a car with a rear wiper then that car has been designed badly. Therefore the Volvo is well designed :-)

@@outfoxthefox , I state as I find :-) It's an A2, I do not drive fast and I live in a town (or city if not living in the UK) that has snow and rain. It has everything to do with the design quality of the vehicle, why design in an unnecessary piece of equipment?

tried out a C40; crossed it off my shopping list. there's is no rear visibility even before i've put any bikes on the back, and the handling is awful just because if its weight and high centre of gravity. if the Mustang is worse, that's, not a good sign. mind you, having had rental mustangs on US business trips over the years, I know handling was never considered a feature there -just straight line acceleration.
when will ford bring back the EV version of the Sierra RS Cosworth? that's the retro-homage we need!
