I think you are absolutely justified in how you feel. For me (and my wife) our car's reliability is key to our enjoyment and trust. I've read a number of accounts of various models of plug-in Recharges "bricking", as well, and what is concerning is that Volvo never seems to know what's going on and doesn't give a clear explanation of the cause or of the solution. That doesn't inspire confidence.

The absolute majority of the cars have no faults of significance.

Service man didn't told them what was the problem because he didn't know what was the problem. They just reinstalled the software and everything went to normal.
Software is very complex, to debug it and find the problem can only developers. Those who have the source code.

    Hey Thom!
Been watching your videos for a while and it actually helped me decide to buy my own c40 back in September of this year and I gotta say...it's been a total nightmare for me and my fiance so far. We owned the car for about 1 month before having an issue where it wouldn't DC charge and we got a "propulsion system error"...took it to the dealership to be fixed and basically it has sat there for 3 months now.
First they said it was software, then they replaced the battery disconnect unit (at this point they actually gave it back to us and it wouldn't even level 1 charge and the car did exactly what yours did here - key fob wouldn't work, couldn't get inside, basically got lucky with a mechanic who got us in the car just long enough to drive it back to Volvo), then they replaced the entire onboard charger inside the car, still didn't fix the charging issue and now we are waiting to hear back from Volvo as to what is gonna happen next. At this point I think we just want our money back as we never even owned the car long enough to get rid of the temporary tag from the dealer and actually have it registered to us properly. Seems like Volvo has a ways to go if EV is the future of their entire brand in the next 7 years - certainly doesn't live up to their reputation of reliability they had with their ICE cars.

Hi Thom. I can relate to your story. In the beginning of 2013 there were a lot of software problems with the first PHEV product of Volvo. But after 6 months of regular visits to the dealer they have managed to make a stable software version. I felt like a beta tester a times. Because the C40 and XC40 BEV versions have a lot of new features (AAOS), softwarebugs are readily available in the first year of production... The quickfix is disconnecting the 12v battery for 10-15 mins. There was a time a did a reboot of my V60D6 that way. So keep wrench number 10 in a handy spot.

Appreciate your honest experience with your C40 Recharge. I had a 2021 XC40 Recharge and it was a disaster. Unreliable charging at public stations, system would freeze and car would not engage into D or R or N, had it towed to the dealership twice, was at the dealership for 3 out of the first 6 months of ownership and always received the same explanation regarding software. Luckily we had a "lemon" law in my state so Volvo had to buy the car back from me and we decided to go with a 2022 XC60 Plugin hybrid. This vehicle has been somewhat better but there are still some fluky issues such as climate control not working at all at times, etc. Volvo reliability has really tanked per Consumer Reports as in the latest reliability rankings, only Fiat is worse. I really do like the Volvo but any car needs to be reliable especially considering the price point.

Your points a are spot on and how you felt was definitely justified. Volvo dealers worldwide have seem to not want to (lately) disclose exact faults and give generic replies when issues crop up. I am a huge fan of Volvo (on my 7th Volvo) but am disappointed with the direction they're taking with their vehicles and aftersales. I will keep my fan-ship for their older vehicles which I strongly believe in.
Safety to me, is a collective of 3 very important principles - Occupant Safety, Mental Safety, and Financial Safety. It seems like the last 2 aspects are diminishing with modern Volvos. I feel that Volvos (and their counterparts) are cars now that should only be leased (which i'm doing now for an MY2020 S60 T8) or driven with a subscription for a peace of mind.

Great video. I have an 2022 XC-90 PHEV and had two issues with software. The biggest issue is the fact that Volvo dealers aren’t ready to support EVs. I always feel like fixes are just luck and no one can really explain the issue and resolution.

    • @thom-lov
      @thom-lov  Рік тому

Thanks Bruce! Dealers mostly have a look in the Volvo system to see if there are any new procedures/fixes availeble. Otherwise they try to trouble shoot themselves or simply await any fixes from Sweden which will be done during your next service appointment.. All that tech in these cars.... 😉

  • @ChrisBatchelors

I've had the XC40 since February. For the first 3 months or so I would have to do the TCAM reset frequently due to the car suddenly losing LTE connectivity but that seems to have calmed down a lot since then. I hear others still have these issues though, so I don't necessarily believe a software fix has solved it. Instead, I believe these issues happen more often on newer vehicles, and I read a theory previously that it may be due to how Volvo (or a third party) is authenticating the vehicles for the connectivity services.
Luckily I have managed to avoid these major issues that other people have experienced across the 15,000 miles or so we've put on the vehicle so far. I'm a REALLY big fan of the vehicle otherwise, and hope that Volvo is able to resolve these issues over time... It's difficult to recommend the car to others due to the software concerns, and it doesn't appear that Volvo is making swift progress at resolving them. Google's Infotainment system is also fairly feature-sparse compared to competing offerings which doesn't help things either.

Picked up my C40 in August, and so far it has spent 10 days total at the dealership for different issues. 7 days to replace the drivers door handle because the lock/ unlock sensor was malfunctioning. Both rear rotors were replaced due to a clanking noise and the charge port needed lubricating because it got stuck closed. Crossing my fingers that there are no further issues down the line.

Hi Thom, had the same last summer with my C40 while driving to the South of France... It's a known issue with the v2.2 software, also other Volvos like the XC40 can have this... Even our 'sister brand' Polestar suffers from this since they share the platform. Reset of the software is the only solution, V2.5 is now on my car as well for some time. No issues since then.
I agree, bit 'unreliable' from Volvo to put out a buggy update and not fixing it with a new one in a short time.
Advise for our co-C40 owners: to upgrade to v2.5 asap :)

You are driving something more complicated than the Apollo moon rocket, perhaps some teething problems are to be expected? It certainly seems as though your problems were addressed as quickly as possible by Volvo and the dealer, I'm impressed that you were offered a mechanic at all on a Sunday. New models of any manufacturer tend to have problems, I bought a new F-250 diesel that developed a bad glow plug at 1500 miles. It was at the dealer for two weeks for that. Beautiful car, sir, I hope you have a trouble free experience henceforth.

  • @sevensixtysteve8662

I definitely think your experience is to be expected. ICE cars have had decades of development and refinement to get to the reliability and convenience levels they are at. We are only a few years into mainstream EV development so I think it will take some more time to work the bugs out of these cars. My 33 year old 240 has never failed to start or failed to complete a journey in the 16 years I have owned it - simple tech with no ECUs or software, and if it breaks, I can usually fix it fairly easily. My concern is how long EVs will work for - battery life aside, how long with the software be supported ? Time will tell I guess.

I am still new (less than a month and less than 1000km) with my B5 diesel and AAOS but had to reset the system already once as voice control was responding but not making the changes requested (e.g. switching the radio station). In the end, the more technology you have in your car the more fragile it gets. Yet, I would like to see Volvo providing solutions we as drivers or any road assistance can get at least the car drivable. Four days in the shop for software redeployment? WTF.

Hey there, I came across your video about the Volvo C40 breaking down and just wanted to share my own experience with my XC40. I have a 2023 Mild Hybrid XC40, which only had 1,800 miles on it, and I drove it from New Jersey to Vermont for Christmas. However, on the day I was supposed to leave, the car wouldn't start. I had to jump start it and then I received a message saying "Stop Safely, 12V battery critical charging fault." The car was towed to the nearest dealer, which is 50 miles away.
I appreciate that Volvo is willing to refund up to $500 for all the costs related to this issue, including the tow charges. The dealer ended up fixing the issue by charging up the T-CAM and regular battery, and doing a software upgrade from 2.2 to 2.5. I just wanted to share my experience in case anyone else has had a similar issue with their Volvo. Everything has been smooth thus far.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I've had my C40 Ultimate since April of this year and it's been great. A few software issues but nothing that a system reset didn't fix. One of those issues was also loss of A/C as you experienced. Rebooting the head unit fixed that problem.
I got the car expecting to have some problems being a new system, and so far am not disappointed with the vehicle.
As far as things go mechanically, it pulls to the right a bit with the stock wheels. Once I put on my winter wheels, the pull went away. I suspect it's a fault in one of the front tires and am hoping to get a warranty replacement of them after the winter.

    • @likeZOMGlmfao

@@GSP-76 It's been great. I really can't see myself moving to any other car brand once my time with the C40 has come to and end.
Software updates have been consistent and for the most part reliable. There were some things improved in the 3.03 update that I noticed, but I also heard it was pulled from OTA release because of issues. One issue I have currently with it is that the cabin blower fan (last used temp setting) will enable itself automatically even if I left it off after I last got out of the car. A bit of a weird glitch, but no big deal. There's a dealer only update that I am getting installed this weekend when I head in for service.
I've had 3 mechanical/physical issues since my original comment I can list below with details.
      1) Front left strut bearing went bad and was making a loud clunking noise. Took it in to the dealer to inspect what was making the noise and they informed me of the strut bearing. Was actually quite the ordeal to get the front end apart to replace it, but of course it was under warranty. All good since then.
      2) Front passenger side door handle illumination stopped working. Relatively minor issue but I of course brought it to their attention regardless. Some water seemed to have gotten inside the handle and corroded the LED. They've ordered a replacement and I'm getting it replaced this weekend at the dealer.
      3) The small triangular corner pieces behind the 2 rear doors would catch on the rubber weather stripping of the door when you'd open them. It was a common issue for almost all C40's and a revised part was released. They were able to replace one side when I was at the dealer a few months ago. They're replacing the other side when I go in this weekend. The revised part completely fixed the issue.
Overall very pleased with the vehicle.

@@likeZOMGlmfao That's great... nothing serious to really worry about. I've had mine for about 3-4 weeks now. I got a great deal on a left over 2023 model and after trading in my old car, the choice was a no brainier. I absolutely love it so far. It came with the 3.03 update already installed so it's been fantastic so far. Haven't had a single issue yet other than having to reboot the head unit once. It really feels like a highly refined driving experience. I have the dual motor version so speed is just phenomenal. It's my first EV and Volvo but I'm very happy I got it. I even have two DC fast chargers 10 minutes from home that allow for 30 free minutes of charging. I've been taking advantage of that at least twice to three times a week.

From all the research ive done, it seems the vast majority of issues that arise are due to software and not defective hardware. The updates to version 2.5 and 3.03 have been very significant and fixed most of the known issues plaguing customers. The 3.03 update was especially significant because it is now running on Android 12 instead of 10 which was very big for auto.

Just a little background, my wife and I have been prior Volvo owners. I had a 850 R and my wife had a cross country wagon . About 8 years back I switched to a Tesla model S and my wife went to a BMW X.3. Recently my model S electric motor failed. I need a replacement at $8000 so I decided to switch out and look at other options for EV. The incentives on Volvos in June were incredible here in the US And I ended up buying the C 40 based on some of your videos. Of course, my wife got jealous and now she has electrified XC 40 as well. With a couple of weeks in love these cars, they feel extremely quality and quiet compared to the both previous that we had on and replace. In week one with my car plugged in with an adapter to the Tesla charger. They charged fine for a couple of days and then would not charge overnight. Basically what you were experience here without bricking it. I had adjusted. the kilowatts going in from 48 to 40 and now it charges quite nicely, the only thing other than that about it experience was a rattle in the back after about a week which I have to take back to Volvo to look at. thank you so much for your reviews and your details on your videos. I’ll continue to follow and update you on my own.

About 5 months ago ( in the summer ), I had this exact problem in two weeks twice, same AC charging session, same non responsive remote, same no volvo on call + error warning that SOS service was not available. The volvo mechanic explained this this was a software bug which should be resolved on the next software update, on the first occasion I did not know about the key in the arm rest thing, neither did the ANWB so they arranged a tow to the volvo dealer ( which funny enough is 500meters down the road ). Still the first occurance: volvo fixed the issue within an hour and I got a replacement car for that time.
2nd occurance, exact same issue and instead of taking the car to the dealer I walked to the dealer and was directed to the workshop where a very helpful mechanic was de-energising a polestar 2 ( with the same problem ). At that moment I asked, if I couldn't do the de-energising / reset myself, and he said, yes no problem ill show it on this polestart, the following instructions made me recover my C40 (this will reset the TCAM module which contains the wireless communication with the remote + the LTE connection, hence why the volvo on call dindn't work):
    * With the mechanical key get in the car and then open the bonnet and open the cargo hatch (rear end of the car, beware that it is eclectic and wont open without 12V ) ( with the joy of the alarm sounding :) ), remove the plastic liner above the 12v battery and disconnect one of the terminals. This disables the 12V system and after a few minutes the HV batter will disable automatically.
    * Now the 12V and HV is dead but the TCAM is not yet, the TCAM has its own small battery. The TCAM battery lives under the floor liner of the cargo area. The Polestar has the TCAM module not easy accessible( you need tools ) , but in the C40 you can find it without tools, it is located below the floor liner, so remove the floor liner, this is the very large piece that covers the complete bottom of the cargo area, then at the left corner directly behind the back rest of the left rear seat there is a small rectangular block with a 4 pin connector, it has part number 32319770 ( can use this for image search ).
I dont know of any C40 instruction video but if you youtube search "polestar tcam module reset" you will find the polestar instruction.

Long live modern software development : agile developed (and tested?) software for (real time) devices seems more and more an issue. One notice it at cars, televisions, mobile phones, etc. In this example it is a car, but can you imagine when it concerns a heart monitor system?
To be honest: the old fashioned way of development of software was slow and new features took time before they came available, but it was much more stable and proper tested!
However, we as consumers want always the beautiful and handy new features and less care about reliability and stability... Just 'reboot'when we have an issue.

Thom, what an ordeal. So sorry to hear this. I was just viewing a vide of someone who was driving a Tesla in the cold and he was driving on a highway and the car told him to pull over and the car would shut down. It was the same deal. Nothing work. He had to use an emergency level to open the door and it cracked the window. Then he called Tesla and they put him on hold. He called somewhere else and they had someone come out but couldn't do anything with it but they charged his phone. Eventually things were resolved. And then in the comment section, people with Porsche Taycans, Polestar 2s, and someone with a BMW iX said the same thing happened to them. So maybe it isn't a great idea to totally control a car through software and maybe hybrids with their mechanical backups are a better idea. Maybe PHEVs are best and maybe the software-based cars need more redundancies or at least backups to have them be able to drive to a service center.
The issue seems to be software and maybe it isn't about the brand. I also feel you are right to feel that the car may not be reliable. Too many issues. It needs to operate without any major issues for some time before you can feel you can really count on it.

I had a 40 minute commute with pretty much nothing between cities. Low and behold it died almost in the middle of my trip. Being brand new, it was under warranty but I lost almost a whole day getting it to the dealer. And, like you, my experience with the dealer was and still is excellent. I guess the point of this comment, gas or electric, if it can fail it will and in the worst place. However, I'm not sure that I'm ready for an EV just yet.

It was BROKEN UNDER WARRANTY, but the warranty doesn't include clutch! Still concerned that service would not even consider my problem, I drove it into service center in Zagreb and.. got replacement vehicle (two month old little 500 hybrid) to carry on with my business. Two days passed, they called your car is fixed, new clutch installed. I returned little 500, pick up my old 500x and got... Report what they done, I signed and free to go... With 0 euro to pay. On 4 year old car!!! That is customer service! And that is the reason to stay brand loyal. I was blown away. So I expected a little more from Volvo in your country. Hi Thom, thank you for your honest video. I got mine fully specd C40 twin ultimate 24/11. It was on software 2.4 when I got it. A week later the car started to do a rattling sound when I used maximum acceleration. I went to the dealer and they had to keep the car for a day to solve it. It is still there but isn’t as loud as before. Do you have a rattling sound when accelerating? The week after I had problem with the LTE connection. Once again I went to the dealership and they had me waiting for 1,5 hours while updating all the softwares. They told me that there is softwares that could not be updated over the air. After that I too got software version 2.5 It seems that the car runs smoother now but maybe I am dreaming. The last issue that no one have a solution to s this. I I drive to a “Recharge” (Swedish company) fast charger and plug the cable in my car and both screens crashes and the car reboots. I released the cable and tried again but no luck. I waited 10 days and went back and the same thing happens. I called Recharge and they have never heard of it. I called Volvo and they told me to call Recharge….. @@thom-lov To be fair to Volvo .. I don't hear many issues ..but, this 12v battery problem has been reported many times across other manufacturers such as Nissan Leaf, Jaguar IPace and Hyundai Ioniq5. The 12v battery controls the ancillaries before the big battery is "woken up" - so you can have a fully charged car but it won't let you in and nothing starts. It is usually found that the BMS - Battery Management System - is not sending a suitable charge to the separate 12v battery. One guy with an Ionique5 found that every time he walked near the car with the key in his pocket that it "woke up" and stayed in an alert waiting state for some time - this flattened the 12v battery whilst he was gardening one weekend and walking back and forth many times. There is a lesson here for you about learning (in advance) what you have available in support - and what you have paid for ... but that is not easy when your brain is occupied with the stress at the time

The second Volvo dealer then showed me a 2023 model and, to my amazement, all the faults were fixed there except for the unreliable traffic sign recognition. Hi Thom, this is not good!! I am from sunny South Africa. The c40 recharge was just launched yesterday. After viewing your video and reading the comments I am rethinking about purchasing this car. Have you had further issues since then? Thanks for all your videos.

    Hi Thom
You vere driving XC40 earlier, did you have issues with that car also? I have seen +50 of revues on XC40’s and this is the first time I hear/see complaints? Everybody else seems very content by their Volvo and prises them in High tones.
I ordered one to arrive february 23.
    Kind Regards Jens Christian Larsen

Hi Jens, correct. However in my XC40 I had zero issues. Mine still had the 'old' sensus system en a petrol engine: so no issues with that car. I already regret getting rid of it for this one.. 😉 As for issues, check the other comments on this video, plenty of people with similar problems sadly.
But, I do have confidence Volvo will fix it by OTA and am sure you will enjoy your car!! Cheers, 😊

What if the EX90 also gets plagued by these software issues? It could be a major blow for Volvo.

      @thom-lov  Рік тому

Good question! The EX90 will be tested extensively until we will see them appearing on the road/showrooms. The main reason of the long delivery times is this testing period during 2023. Lets hope that will safe us from potential issues. 😊

Oh man. Sorry to hear that! I had quiet a few software problems on my XC40 Recharge and on my current C40 Recharge Twin as well (eg same AC problem in summer, LTE modem issues), but so far *touch wood* no such breakdown issues you described here, but my C40 is just 2.5 months old, so who knows. I am just glad I didn‘t buy it but have it as auto abo from CbV. What‘s your next car, Thom? I am really not sure what else to get, I really like the C40 format

Thanks for watching Timo! Reading all the comments here it just looks like we all have the same issues. I think the way to go on these new tech cars is to Abo them, CBV and such. There will be something next for sure, Volvo just needs to reveal it in the coming months... 😉

The fact that they are withholding information regarding why the car had to be held for days is not a good thing in my eyes. Electric cars have issues (who woulda known xD) But withholding information regarding the issue isnt the way to go. That's how you loose trust and busniess overall. You should get a Hybrid instead, prefferable from a company with loong experience in that. That way you wont have issues like this moving forward. The gass milage is amazing on those and you never have to worry about driving distance at all.

I took delivery of my 2023 Volvo S60 plug in recharge the first week October. Ten days later when I took the car to have the mud flaps installed the check engine light came on. The next day the service writer texted me that it would be the following week before they could fix my car. I texted my salesman that this was unacceptable and they had the car back to me two days later. Our 2022 Volvo S60 plug in recharge does not have heat when running in the energy efficient “Hybrid” mode! We waited a month for a service appointment and have been waiting two weeks for the part they say will fix it along with a software update (apparently this is a wide spread problem with 2022 plug in recharge Volvos)!

Shame to hear you're having problems Bill! Make sure to keep close contact with the dealership and don't have them slow down on fixing your problems. Part issues or not, they need to provide a covering service and if needed even provide you with a loaner car until the car is fixed. Hopefully it will be solved soon and you will be able to enjoy the car! 😊

Very sorry to hear about all these frustrations! If Volvo fanboys wouldn't jump here and get mad, I (the owner of brand new Volvo) would say it's a piece of rubbish. Lots of reliability issues are coming from cost savings on production. Unlike what they claim, Volvo is not on par with premium German brands, the quality is much lower, and only the price tag is similar to Germans!

the future of cars, they are computers on wheels. Volvo builds the car with the same quality os the old models but they are depended of 3the party software and the support they get. the software can work perfectly on one car like tesla but when the use it on a different brand like Volvo that is using other hardware there will be conflicts in the software. for an example a new vidiocard for a PC will work fine with one motherboard but when plugged in a new motherboard on the marked there can be a software problem. usually the company will troubleshoot this very fast an bring an updated software, but sometimes they also can't find the problem and send out small patches to temporarily make it work where the problem can take moths to fix.
Tesla is the leading market for EV, so most software will be written for those cars with patches for other brands. as Volvo will grow in the market the software companies will start to test there software for the other brands as wel before bringing them on the marked. EV's are still new, as brands grow the software will be beter. the brands you buy now will be the leaders in the market. the C40 an XC 40 are test models and we are the beta users. now with the XC 40 and 90 EV coming Volvo will becoming a leading EV company and these software problems will belong to the past. of course there will always be minor software problems for all brands.
knowing all this my trust in Volvo is very high and was interested in the XC 40 from day one, but i would never get the first models. now the model is 5 years old and i ordered the EV model 24 XC 40, trusting the majority of the problems will be gone. every company needs to start somewhere and now with the Polstar 2 , Volvo is on track with Tesla.
